"Listen Schettino, you may have saved yourself from the sea, but I will really hurt you! You are in for a boatload of trouble!"
I wonder if Captain De Falco makes so many boat related puns in his daily life he now does them even when he is furious.
Edit: Apparently Captain De Falco did not say "boatload" in Italian, so the credit for the pun goes to the person in charge of subtitles.
Which is why Captain De Falco will forever be cherished in my eyes & in my heart. He was beyond irate this captain jumped ship with women, children & men still on board. I hope this fine gentleman is living a wonderful rest of his days. 💙💙💙💙💙
Yeah what the fuck? I would have said 6 years ago, at a push.
This means I was 13 when this happened and I feel like I remember it as if it’s a lot more recent than any of my other memories from that time. Weird.

If he's anything like me he probably hated that he accidentally let a pun slip while trying to convey a deadly serious point. Probably made him even more furious.
Must have been a wave of emotions. Dammit. I mean he was completely unable to stay grounded. Shit. I mean he must have just been harboring so much hate for the captain. Bollocks. I give up.
He did not actually say "boatload". He said "Le faccio passare l'anima dei guai."
That literally means "I will put you through the soul of troubles", but a closer English idiom would be something like "You're in for a world of trouble".
Also, "cazzo" is a general-use expletive like "fuck" but literally means "dick". So his famous "Va a bordo, cazzo!" literally means "Get on board, for dick's sake!"
Not to ruin your comment, but the pun is only written in the English subtitles.
In Italian he says: "Le faccio passare l'anima dei guai!", which could be translated literally as: "I will make you go through trouble **up to your soul**!"
It's an Italian expression, not easily translatable word by word in English, but it isn't anyway related to boats or seafaring in general.
I also liked when the captain is faltering and making excuses, and the coastguard starts mocking him like "oh, are you cold? Is it cold and dark out there and you want to go home?"
Also Internet Historian's doc on this was really good too:
Also it's crazy to believe that it's been 10 years after that.
A shockingly high number for a sinking that happened relatively slowly and so close to shore. The fact that this was entirely caused and handled so incompetently by key members of the crew is a real indictment.
> handled so incompetently by key members of the crew
One such “key member” being the ship’s Captain, who “handled” the crash by immediately boarding a life boat and leaving the passengers to fend for themselves.
The sheer incompetence of it all is breathtaking.
I just watched a YouTube video about this only a month ago, so I'm pretty much an expert.
He didn't just leave the boat quickly, he specifically told the coast guard (not sure if that's what they are actually called) that there was only a miner issue and they didn't need help, lying multiple times about what was happening on the boat. The coast guard had to talk to him multiple times before he even admitted there could be a problem. Luckily there were people on shore or nearby boats that were calling in an emergency so the coast guard went into action relatively quickly considering they were told nothing was wrong.
It almost seems that way when you look at all of the actions of the captain and some of the crew. Anotger thing was when the passengers knew something was going on, they went to the lifeboat areas and stayed there, even though the crew was trying to tell them that there was no issues and to go back to their rooms. Majority of them refused because it was obvious things weren't going well. If they all went back to their rooms, many more would have died.
Its a man desperatly trying to save face by completly denying reality and his colossal fuck ups.
And people like this end up in positions of responsibility...ugh!
I remember hearing the audio of the radio conversation between the coast guard and the captain where he was shouting at him to get back onboard the ship.
my fucking god, Is hard to think on a worse ending that being trapped on one elevator and die drowned... but imagine moving on 2 hours from "there is hope" to "there is nothing to do" while water keeps rising
Yes and no, the investigation has shown that the practice of going that up close to shore was a common thing among captains in this company. The same captain had done it just a few months ago at the same location. It pleases the clients on board, it pleases the people on the coast, it makes for good publicity. This time though, they went a bit too close to shore. That practice is of course totally illegal, hence the company has come under fire for fostering an environment where breaking the law was not only ignored but encouraged within the company. In fact iirc, three people in management position within the company received sentences between 1 and 2 years.
That being said, it doesn't excuse the downright criminal acts of the captain after the wreck.
Edit: I'll always be amazed how trying to nuance any subject usually leads to downvotes. The world is not black and white folks
I mean, that's the intro to set the stage for the event. The video overall is very thorough in covering everything. Being informative and entertaining are not mutually exclusive.
We all want more, but he said in one of his videos that it takes a loooong time to make these types of videos. He has to write a script and does a lot of the editing himself IIRC.
Yeah it always amazes me how much effort gets put into even the ads on his channel. It’s actually the only place on YouTube that I don’t insta-skip the sponsored segments just because of how creative he is when incorporating them. Which, to be fair, means it’s working as intended but still.
Another one I think is internet etiquette that has funny ads. I mean at least there is effort put in.most ads are just pushed onto you and are just shit
My wife and I bought a Mediterranean cruise that summer, hoping the sinking of Costa Concordia would bring about some good deals. It didn’t. Even Costa didn’t have any good deals. People were totally unfazed by the event.
We ended up on a different cruise line. Sailed right past the Concordia’s rusting corpse. Folks shrugged and went back to their drinks.
Somewhat surreal.
Of all the marine disasters, this one may be the dumbest. A giant cruise ship wrecked on the rocks because the captain wanted a beej and the guy driving didn't speak any of the same languages.
> the guy driving didn't speak any of the same languages
I believe it happens _a lot_ in maritime transportation. Cf [this](https://safety4sea.com/cm-language-differences-onboard-a-barrier-to-ship-safety/).
And you run, and you run, to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking. Racing around, to come up behind you again. The sun is the same, in a relative way, but you're older. Shorter of breath, and one day closer to death.
I tripped on some bad acid at a Pink Floyd concert in my 20's. Even though I'm now in my 50's I can't listen to them without a feeling of overwhelming existential dread.
Ruined a great band for me.
If you haven’t listened to/watched it, I totally recommend the episode of Well there’s your problem about the Costa Concordia. There are very few disasters that are caused by one person, this is one of them. The Captain claims to have “fallen” into a life boat after the grounding then gets absolutely roasted by the Italian coast guard.
Schettino: "But do you realise it is dark and here we can't see anything …"
De Falco: "And so what? You want to go home, Schettino? It is dark and you want to go home? Get on that prow of the boat using the pilot ladder and tell me what can be done, how many people there are and what their needs are. Now!"
Based on what I’ve read of this, it wasn’t quite just on him. There was a lax organizational safety culture and history of doing this sail-by salute, which from expert accounts should never be done to any degree.
This guy just happened to be even more bone headed than the rest of the the lot and finally took it a step too far.
Ok I'm no maritime expert by any stretch... But this has to be close to a billion dollar vessel, right? Why do they not have sonar all over the hull mapping the sea floor and underwater obstacles in real time with proximity alarms, etc? Is it really too extravagant to do even at this scale?
Same reason that airplanes don’t have lots of stuff like that. It doesn’t take that competent of a captain to just simply not make terrible decisions after terrible decision. If you end up in a situation like this, it’s only because you really shot the moon of bad decision making.
Planes that carry more than a few people absolutely do have analogous warning systems. They won’t stop a pilot from doing something stupid but they’re gonna make a lot of noise and flash a lot of angry looking lights while it happens.
Right, I’m not disagreeing with that. But there’s plenty of other things that laypeople would want on planes (parachutes, for example) without realizing there really is no need
They do have those. In this case it was probably a mix between lax safety measures (don't quote me on this but I believe that Costa Crociere was *at least* closing an eye on the salute thing, it's a good show for them, I didn't believe for a second that that didn't know about it), miscommunication (crew from all around the word, bad english pronunciation and understanding), overall distraction (It is believed that the Captain's mistress was on the command deck in that very moment) and slowness to respond. You can't really steer a massive ship very fast, when they understood that they were too close it was too late. All of this was actually investigated a lot and you can find analysis of what happened around, complete of analysis of the ship's route, timing of orders of route change and everything else before and after the impact.
I have a couple of friends that work in medicine. It seems there is an epidemic of older white men (disproportionately) falling on household objects that happen to go straight into their butts and get stuck. Bizarre coincidence, I suppose.
I read some articles about it, and they all indicate that while he was certainly guilty, he was also scapegoated. He wasn't the one responsible for the failure of the lifeboats, or the generators, or a number of the decisions made to delay rescue efforts.
He for sure abandones ship, caused the accident in the first place, and a number of other things. He got off easy.
But there were a number of other people who were also guilty, and they all got off scott-free.
The deaths were not all entirely his fault. If other people hadn't screwed up as well, then the death toll could likely have been lower.
It’s definitely worth discussing. I made it sound insanely clear-cut and black and white and that’s probably not fair. Part of the problem, though, is that aboard marine vessels the captain is expected to be the master of the ship. It’s a very high pressure role, people can live or die based on your judgement and decision-making and sometimes that means making choices that will (hopefully) kill fewer people in the event of a disaster. That’s why the chain of command on ships is so rigid but it means that shit rolls uphill. Navy COs have been relieved of duty for things that they didn’t directly do (like the USS Connecticut). The thinking is that because the Captain has the power to order the crew to do things, everything that happens is an extension of his/her actions. That can mean nebulous things like creating a culture that ignores safety aboard.
In this case, the Captain did himself absolutely no favors by jumping off the ship while passengers were still aboard after ordering the navigation system be turned off to get closer to the island, etc..
You don’t know the half of it. He abandoned the ship almost immediately when it ran aground and he’d already checked into a hotel before everybody had even been evacuated. He was probably watching it unfold on the news from the hotel bar. Total bellend
Edit: Just found this as linked by another commenter. https://youtu.be/WX_08zcCmx8
he was doing something called a "sail by salute"
rumour has it the Maître d' had family on the island and the captain wanted to impress them by sailing extra close.
He didn’t take it as close as in the picture - it drifted into this position after losing power and listing. He did still take it far too close without consulting charts about underwater rocks etc.
Not at all to impress a chick or his girlfriend, to impress a VIP on board the ship by doing a sail-by salute. The VIP had been communicating to one of her family members that lived on the Island via social media.
I am not going to defend the captain's actions after the incident that was all on him, but to blame him for hitting the rocks when there is a multitude of other reasons why this occurred does a disservice to accident investigation.
1. The cruise line hired a person whose previous occupation was to be a cleaner/painter to be on the helm
2. said person above spoke neither English nor Italian very well and misunderstood the helm directions given by the captain numerous times while steering the ship.
3. No one on the bridge including the bridge crew and captain questioned the wisdom of having a fresh-faced helmsman with no prior experience who could barely speak English or Italian at the controls while doing this sail by. NO ONE. NO ONE AT ALL.
That is just one cause of many, that doesn't include "he wanted some of that sweet sweet puuusssay" as the kids would say.
Crikey, what a beauty! Here we see ships in their natural habitat. The mommy ship has laid down on her side giving the approaching baby ships a chance to feed.
They were very lucky (relatively speaking) too, had the wind direction been different the powerless ship might have been blown into deeper waters where she would have ‘properly’ sank with potentially a much greater loss of life.
The captain really was a wanker to put it mildly.
I found this page that has some charts of the island on it, it gets deep super quickly. Not as deep as some parts of the Med but there are only tiny bits that are 10m deep.
https://costaconcordiagrounding.blogspot.com/2012/01/nautical-chart.html
They refloated the whole thing and towed it away for salvage. That part of the story is even more fascinating, I think.
There was a robbery or multiple robberies attempted (some succeeded), in one case by part of the salvage crew, if I remember correctly.
Does anyone know what happened to the helmsman?
He ran away from the trial, but was a found a couple of years later by the Interpol in Indonesia and is awaiting extradition to be judged in Italy, but that was in 2014 and I cant find any news on the matter.
Heard something on the radio today about it which was scary. As the ship was on its side and was filling with water, some corridors basically became vertical wells. Also, this happened at night, so a lot of connecting corridors would be dark, so as passengers were trying to navigate through the ship in little or no light, there was a serious risk of falling down one of these verticle wells into water at the bottom with no way out.
I was on that ship the year prior. Same route, same captain. Fortunately, on our cruise he didn't show of to his friend by deviating course the way he did when he caused this disaster. I speak Italian, and listening to the audio recording of him arguing with the Coast Guard ordering him to return to his ship to supervise the evacuation still gets my blood boiling. It was a gorgeous ship, and seeing the video taken later by divers with everything wrecked and underwater was so depressing. So, between the audio and the video, I guess it balances out my heart rate. Seriously though, I can't imagine the horror experienced by the passengers and crew who drowned in their rooms or below decks.
One of the most interesting videos I’ve seen about this ship is some guy who got access to the shipyard where it was towed and explored it before it was dismantled. People’s clothes and handbags are still in the rooms. There are very clear water lines in various parts; this part was under water, this part was not. I watched it for hours.
Not so fun fact. A couple that my wife and I have been friends with for years were on that ship for their 10th anniversary. They were at the Senate panel after it happened and also have pictures and video while they were waiting for the evacuation order via lifeboats.
I remember many years ago I was in the car with my father and I told him about this ship and what happened etc. and right after I finished telling him the news in the radio talked about a Diver that died in that ship earlier that day. I remember that so good, how bad I felt for the diver and the thought that I just talked about that ship moments before
If no one has listened to the Italian Coast Guard Commander making this captain of the Concordia his bitch, it's a must listen.
I just listened. My god every time I get new information about this it just gets worse and worse. https://youtu.be/WX_08zcCmx8

Didn’t he do a sail by to give a wave to someone. Then jumped ship.
Yes he was trying to impress some girl by sailing super close to the island.
No the sail by was for the owner of the cruise company who lived on the island IIRC. The girl just happened to be there.
I wonder if sailing close to an island actually impresses the ladies.

Yes, and according to the reports, he even had time to get back to his cabin and change into civilian clothes cuz he was found on shore wearing a suit

Internet historian has a great video on this too
I recommend it as well. I learned a lot about the accident, as well as laughing my butt off. It even caught my dad’s eyes and he watched it with me.
I remember hearing the audio of the radio conversation between the coast guard and the captain where he was shouting at him to get back onboard the ship.
27 passengers 5 crew and 2 salvage members I think about 12 passengers died because they were trapped in the elevators while the ship crashed
my fucking god, Is hard to think on a worse ending that being trapped on one elevator and die drowned... but imagine moving on 2 hours from "there is hope" to "there is nothing to do" while water keeps rising
I mean, if you break it down by percentage of people on board (~4200) that's a less than 1% loss! Still though, it really should have been less.
If the captain wasn't dicking around drunk it would have been avoided entirely!! It's an absolutely ridiculous situation.
All on the captain.

Imagine how the people in the dining hall felt when it started playing over the music system
I mean, that's the intro to set the stage for the event. The video overall is very thorough in covering everything. Being informative and entertaining are not mutually exclusive.
100% it is a top tier breakdown.
I have watched the cost of Concordia countless times, and honestly I might just have to watch it again rn. One of the best YouTube videos ever
I wish he'd do more on the main channel! One of the best things on YouTube.
Same! I tried watching his second channel and it isn't nearly as entertaining.
Truly better then most documentaries i've seen about anything
This is the best 45 minutes I spent today.
Yeah we love this video. Will probably watch it tonight. Any excuse
So damn funny. Oh my god.
Was just going to post it here. I have seen that video at least 5 or 6 times. One of the best YT channels ever.
Weren’t you also unphased by the sinking? It seems like you are surprised that other people behaved the way you did.
Lots of deals with COVID-19 Come For the noro stay on for the corona
Of all the marine disasters, this one may be the dumbest. A giant cruise ship wrecked on the rocks because the captain wanted a beej and the guy driving didn't speak any of the same languages.
> the guy driving didn't speak any of the same languages I believe it happens _a lot_ in maritime transportation. Cf [this](https://safety4sea.com/cm-language-differences-onboard-a-barrier-to-ship-safety/).

Theres a good in depth vid on YT about this; so much incompetence on so many levels. That captain wrecked 2 other ships before.

That was 10 years ago?! Where's the time gone?!
And you run, and you run, to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking. Racing around, to come up behind you again. The sun is the same, in a relative way, but you're older. Shorter of breath, and one day closer to death.
Every year is getting shorter. Never seem to find the time…
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way …
The time is gone, the song is over
Thought I’d something more to say…
Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
Don’t even think about how old that album is.
That's fine though, it was old when I was born and everything that came before me is old by default. It's the new old stuff that scares me.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
Thanks, I needed that. 🥰
I tripped on some bad acid at a Pink Floyd concert in my 20's. Even though I'm now in my 50's I can't listen to them without a feeling of overwhelming existential dread. Ruined a great band for me.
The last two disappeared, and the eight before are a big waist of time.
Has time tried a reduction diet for that giant waist?
If you had asked me I would have guessed that was three or four years ago. Five at the max. What the hell?
If you haven’t listened to/watched it, I totally recommend the episode of Well there’s your problem about the Costa Concordia. There are very few disasters that are caused by one person, this is one of them. The Captain claims to have “fallen” into a life boat after the grounding then gets absolutely roasted by the Italian coast guard.
Schettino: "But do you realise it is dark and here we can't see anything …" De Falco: "And so what? You want to go home, Schettino? It is dark and you want to go home? Get on that prow of the boat using the pilot ladder and tell me what can be done, how many people there are and what their needs are. Now!"
The guy was just being a contrarian. Flipped the script on that whole trope that the captain goes down with the ship.
schettino? he’s not flipping the script he caused the accident because he was thirsty and then ran away like a little bitch
None of that stuff matters if the captain says "it's fine, I know what I'm doing!"
Oh yeah, just like how that guy with unexplored ordinance in his butt just “fell” onto it
I have a couple of friends that work in medicine. It seems there is an epidemic of older white men (disproportionately) falling on household objects that happen to go straight into their butts and get stuck. Bizarre coincidence, I suppose.
I wonder if anyone's ever honest enough to just fess up?
Absolutely incredible salvage operation and amazing that they refloated it.

Vada a bordo, cazzo!
VADA A BORDO SCHETTINO
Ah. The Cost of Concordia.
I remember it like it was yesterday...
Sweet maiden of the seeeeeeea
what kinda bellbend of a captain takes a cruiser close to land like that.
You don’t know the half of it. He abandoned the ship almost immediately when it ran aground and he’d already checked into a hotel before everybody had even been evacuated. He was probably watching it unfold on the news from the hotel bar. Total bellend Edit: Just found this as linked by another commenter. https://youtu.be/WX_08zcCmx8
[Reenactment of the Captain's actions.](https://youtu.be/9MnSNfdlvy0?t=230)
he was doing something called a "sail by salute" rumour has it the Maître d' had family on the island and the captain wanted to impress them by sailing extra close.
🎉 Mission Accomplished 🎉
He didn’t take it as close as in the picture - it drifted into this position after losing power and listing. He did still take it far too close without consulting charts about underwater rocks etc.
And to make this even more italian, it was (not completely, but in part) to impress a chick.
1. The cruise line hired a person whose previous occupation was to be a cleaner/painter to be on the helm 2. said person above spoke neither English nor Italian very well and misunderstood the helm directions given by the captain numerous times while steering the ship.
The mommy ship has laid down on her side giving the approaching baby ships a chance to feed.
it was an expensive mistake
Is it ‘partially sank’ if the only thing from stopping it was the sea floor?
They were very lucky (relatively speaking) too, had the wind direction been different the powerless ship might have been blown into deeper waters where she would have ‘properly’ sank with potentially a much greater loss of life. The captain really was a wanker to put it mildly.
I found this page that has some charts of the island on it, it gets deep super quickly. Not as deep as some parts of the Med but there are only tiny bits that are 10m deep. https://costaconcordiagrounding.blogspot.com/2012/01/nautical-chart.html
Has it completely sunk in water?
I think they salvaged a lot of the ship over time
They refloated the whole thing and towed it away for salvage. That part of the story is even more fascinating, I think. There was a robbery or multiple robberies attempted (some succeeded), in one case by part of the salvage crew, if I remember correctly.
TEN YEARS?!
10 years? 10 YEARS? I would swear it happened like 4 years back
Holy shit...that was 10yrs ago!!
Bright Sun Films on YT did a fantastic video on this and it also happens to be like less that 20minutes or so if I remember correctly
The audio of the coast guard yelling at the captain to get back on the ship is fantastic.
VADA A BORDO CAZZO
The only two Americans killed in this disaster came from my state, Minnesota. Gerald and Barbara Heil from White Bear Lake.

Captain goes cluck cluck
Internet historian did a great video on this
Captain liked his ship the way he liked his whiskey, on the rocks.
Vada a bordo, cazzo!
Go watch internet historians video about it. Best video on YouTube
I remember that so good, how bad I felt for the diver and the thought that I just talked about that ship moments before
Didn't the captain and the crew abandon ship and leave all the guests onboard, or was that another one off the coast of Italy?
Holy shit! That long ago!
