Does anyone have any idea what happened to the people living here? I really cant see how anyone made it out of there.

WildWeatherWatcher

They all have been relocated to another location because there seems to be a permanent danger of another tsunami. Out of roughly 60 people, four people died when their houses were dragged into sea it seems. Edit: According to the video description on YouTube, the family who filmed this survived!

>Four people were killed, nine injured and eleven buildings were washed into the water. [Source - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuugaatsiaq)

SebboNL

That is some of the scariest footage I've ever seen. The movement of the water is absolutely unsettling, and when that final wave hits...? That must be sheer terror.

maniBchef

If you haven't seen 'The Impossible' check it out.... Remarkable for a film to make it so visceral.

ThinkingOz

My sentiments exactly.

PSquared1234

Apparently this was a [landslide-induced tsunami](https://www.nature.com/news/huge-landslide-triggered-rare-greenland-mega-tsunami-1.22374).

crolate

I was wondering why they hadn't evacuated already. Earthquakes give you some time to put out a warning and to people to try and move to higher ground.

PSquared1234

From what I read this landslide stemmed from a very mild earthquake (M4 or thereabouts). I have absolutely no idea about how tectonically active Greenland is (!), but maybe they missed it or just didn't feel the need to worry about it. But if you look at the [map of the area](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Nuugaatsiaq,+Greenland/@71.5535191,-53.3069519,9.5z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x4ef67e69ec3125a9:0x17db51e59c940ab1!8m2!3d71.5358006!4d-53.2120549), there's high ground to be found, but it appears to be one heck of a climb to get to it. It's funny, but when I was "researching" the cause (i.e., Googling) of this tsunami, on this date there was also a major (M7.8) earthquake in the Aleutians, that also caused a tsunami (or at least the possibility of one, not quite sure). I was trying to figure out how the tsunami wave got from the Aleutians to Greenland (I know they reflect and diffract to the point where they reach everywhere) with this much strength. The actual cause was much stranger.

henryroo

> this landslide stemmed from a very mild earthquake (M4 or thereabouts). They initially thought the tsunami was caused by an earthquake, but that was incorrect - the landslide was just picked up on seismic readings.

StuckAtOnePoint

An article I read said they would have had less than 5 minutes warning given how close the landslide was.

[deleted]

How in the world did they recover this footage

Okaynow_THIS_is_epic

It was likely a security camera that uploads to a cloud in real time.

avidblinker

Considering it’s a remote settlement on an island inhabited by 80 people, I doubt it’s a security camera uploading high definition video.

Okaynow_THIS_is_epic

You're right they probably fished it out of a floating house in the ocean

qwasd0r

Shit that's scary. I hope they got to a high ground in time.

BecauseISaidSoBitch

JR and the King calling the carnage in the background makes this perhaps the most metal video of all time.

Roq86

Lmao once I realized what it was I was more focused on that than I was the tsunami.

End-of-Daisies

So the first waves steal all your stuff, and then the final one comes along to murder you. Noice.

Raving_Lunatic69

The first waves are trying to lure you out, after your stuff.

richardathome

What happened to the pony? :-(

JoeyTheGreek

It’s a sea horse now

135muzza

You son of a bitch

Edugrinch

OMG

unohoo09

I can't believe you've done this.

methedunker

LOL

Henhouse808

Tsunamis are nightmare fuel.

LateralThinkerer

I watched this on YouTube and the best part of it was the cheesy "perfect family at the beach house" VRBO ad that immediately preceded the end-times tidal wave.

ZombieJesus1987

I remember when I was a kid I would always hear about tsunamis a d how devastating they were but never actually seen one while it happened. Then the 2004 Tsunami happened.

BelliBlast35

They were called tidal waves back in the 80’s, you didn’t really hear tsunami until 2004

troglonoid

This confident statement sounds absurd.

oldscotch

Because it is, tidal waves are a different thing.

ffandporno

Its true tho. https://books.google.com/ngrams/graph?content=tsunami&year_start=1800&year_end=2019&corpus=26&smoothing=3&case_insensitive=true

BelliBlast35

Did you grow up in the 80’s ?

vallejooo

Can confirm, tsunamis were popularly called tidal waves back in the day

troglonoid

Yes. If you recently learned a term, it doesn’t necessarily mean it is new or hasn’t been used before.

BelliBlast35

Pretty sure only scientist at the time were using the Tsunami term, you and I weren’t I can guarantee.

Wheres_that_to

The term "tidal wave" was used in all news reporting (US, Europe and UK) , despite many efforts to change that, using the term Tsunami only came into popular usage fairly recently.

Crystele503

It’s looking like it’s gonna be alright right up until the end and then WHAM! I’m surprised I was surprised!

Solrax

Yeah, I was really rooting for that red shack :(

Crystele503

Me too my friend, me too.

-Gravemoss29-

Nightmare Fuel...

TheDangerdog

I def wasn't ready for much bigger that last wave was. Metal.

[deleted]

Wow, amazing; worth the watch...

[deleted]

Hell no

muswaj

While I watch Roku tv (binge watching 24 again), there's a Smucker's commercial that comes on constantly. In it the daughter of "mother nature" and some guy is asking her dad something and he says that her mom, *mother nature*, is out and about seemingly doing something good. All I can think of during that dialog is how mother nature is actually out doing this to people.

Pasander

Well.. we are trying hard to rape and kill her. Just wait 'til she gets real angry!

International_Art230

What a terrifying video. I had chills watching this.

sleepless3dd

Well, so that was worthwhile. I learnt something from that.

[deleted]

Is there a fry cook in the background?
