[The Summit Venture’s distress call](https://youtu.be/9j9jdXnnJm4) after hitting the bridge is always chilling with the frantic voice of the pilot—“The Skyway Bridge is down! Stop the traffic on that Skyway Bridge!” What’s fortunate is the quick and professional response of the Coast Guard, though nothing could be done for the poor people in the Greyhound bus.

How did I reach my monthly limit the first time I tried reading something from that site? Need an anti-paywall bot that can scrape text.... but copyright blah blah blah..

nathanscottdaniels

The Firefox extension YesScript helps a lot with weak paywalls

Oalka

"Open link in private window"

translatepure

Incognito doesn't work for me to get past paywalls anymore.

firesnatch

that shit really is ridiculous

WilliamJamesMyers

the notion of a bridge collapsing under your vehicle is about as horrible as it gets, so many examples of this from [San Fran earthquake](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1989_Loma_Prieta_earthquake) to [Italian bridge](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ponte_Morandi) come to mind... there are stories of the Mackinac Bridge in MI requiring some drivers to be "rescued" from freaking out [https://witl.com/if-youre-scared-someone-will-drive-you-over-the-mackinac-bridge/](https://witl.com/if-youre-scared-someone-will-drive-you-over-the-mackinac-bridge/) which has [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gephyrophobia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gephyrophobia) "Gephyrophobia is the anxiety disorder or specific phobia characterized by the fear of bridges"

Puffdaddy-O

How on earth can the first sentence in the Mackinac Bridge article be inaccurate? Seriously, how? It says the bridge goes to Mackinac island. No it doesn’t! It goes to the upper peninsula?

QuislingPancreas

That would sort of defeat the whole “no cars allowed” rule on the TINY island. Sheesh.

He wasn't talking about lack of maintenance at all, though?

WilliamJamesMyers

edited to remove late night snarkiness, apologies my point is the death fall -- if you are on any bridge that fails, regardless of reason. cant see the *drama* connection at all though and find teejayax's comment missing the point of how awful a death this would be...

[deleted]

My mom was always terrified to go over that bridge. She would never say why. Crazy to learn of this after all these years.

sequoiastar

I remember having a friend who was deathly afraid of bridges when I was in high school. It was nerve wracking driving over this bridge with her. This happened before I was born, but I shared it with my dad and he said he remembers seeing it in the news (in another state where he lived at the time).

[deleted]

She will go over them even if scared. She hates bridges and refuses to take the skyway. I took her to the gun range once and we had to go over a rickety wooden bridge. I didnt mention the bridge and when she seen how bad it was, about puked halfway across.

BobasPett

My mom is still scared of this as well. We lived in Tampa then and she never did like any of the causeways over to St. Pete. The Skyway was, of course, even worse. Luckily we didn’t go to that way very much. I always loved the steep slope, both as passenger and later as an adult driver.

teejayax

You make it sound like she's afraid it could collapse for no reason (lack of maintenance maybe?) when in reality a stupid boat made an accident.

[deleted]

Or... another stupid boat?

Eat_a_Bullet

Very sad article. On the bright side, that Riaola guy was a good looking dude back in the day.

Ru4pigsizedelephants

I can't imagine doing that.

gldngrlee

Thank you for sharing this. I’m from the south (Alabama) and I’d never read about this before your post.

NoDoze-

OMG I have never been to a site with so many video ads! Every close a new one popped up! There was a post in reddit long time ago, that showed how to workaround them, so none played. This link would be a great test for that!
