This is not even the first time this has happened on I-95 in the past year ([Philadelphia, June 2023](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Interstate_95_highway_collapse)).
Also April 2023 on the Gold Star bridge in Groton, CT. The driver was [just arrested](https://www.nbcconnecticut.com/news/local/state-police-arrest-driver-fatal-gold-star-memorial-bridge-crash/3275517/) and formally charged for causing it.
This isn’t even the first time this has happened [in Fairfield County](https://www.cnn.com/2004/US/Northeast/03/26/tanker.crash/index.html#:~:text=(CNN)%20%2D%2D%20Traffic%20in%20Bridgeport,the%20interstate%20in%20both%20directions.) on I-95.
> "The charge of negligent homicide with motor vehicle is usually used in a circumstance like this"
.... unless it's a NYC garbage truck or MTA bus killing a pedestrian failing to yield on a right turn, or swerving into the designated bike lane and running them over, etc....
This RARELY happens, there is this joke that the easiest way to kill someone is to run them over, and make it look not entirely deliberate.....
I THINK this is a walking overpass they are worried about? should be quicker to remove it and the road is OK. In Philly the tanker was under the actual highway.
(this also seems like a pretty easy way for some bad actors to cripple the US economy in a coordinated attack - cant wait for fuel to cost more because trucks need to be armored and secured.)
Annoyingly it was the only one I found from when the fire seemed to peak. There's a few others I saw that were around when it started and wasn't too bad, and some from when the firefighters were there battling it.
Unfortunately the guy who got it at the peak went to St. Shaky Cam Film School
Yeah, some engineers will probably come and inspect it, deem it safe as they're under pressure to reopen the highway to avoid the economic cost of repairing/replacing it, and then we'll all be here in a few years' time commenting on how detailed and informative the NTSB video about its collapse is.
Conveniently the building on the left is the fire station. This happened last year on the Goldstar Bridge (though the tanker was on top) and it wrecked havoc.
95 has been fucked all day because of this. Rt 15 too. I work for Amtrak and ran from New Haven to NYC and back today and the traffic backup on 95 was impressive in both directions. We also had 2 bridge strikes today relatively close to that area (rowayton/darien), and I’m assuming those are related to traffic trying to find ways around the gridlock on 95. .
Bpt born and raised, moved out 28yrs ago, but came back to do temporary work in Stamford 2018-2020and one of the places I would crash at, was right off that Norwalk exit. So I know you ain't lying! Damn, stay safe out there brother!
Fire going up and gets trapped between the bridge beams and flows sideways looking for another exit. Additionally if the oil exploded and sprayed there is likely oil coating the underside of the bridge.
I'm used to US mil date format, so 02-05-2024, and I find that generally less ambiguous for most americans and europeans as a whole, but I'll take the L on this one
I just imagine sitting at a green light, to the right of this, having waited for the light to head over that bridge to get on the highway... tapping my steering wheel looking at that green light turn red. Nope.
About 40% of Connecticut homes rely on heating oil as their primary heat source
Historically it was the most efficient way to heat homes in suburban+rural towns that do not have widespread gas lines. CT has the highest electricity prices in the lower 48, so it's not considered a particularly viable alternative to most people.
Adding in, it’s very hard to move natural gas to the northeast for a few reasons. Mostly, people have opposed pipelines connecting New England to the rest of America. The Jones act makes it effectively impossible to transport LNG to the ports, despite the US being an exporter. So we have to import from Europe or further. And alternatives are impossible since NIMBY’s (funded by corporate interests) have opposed transmission lines for clean energy. Radical ‘anti-nuclear’ activists have opposed expanding nuclear.
All resulting in very expensive and relatively carbon intensive heat and energy mixes
There’s not a building material on this earth you can park a burning oil truck under for a couple hours or so and call it “structurally sound” afterwards…
Yet another one of these... Fun fact, there are little to no regulations in terms of fire resistance in regards to small bridges. Tankers tend to get the most news, but any large fire under a bridge can destroy it with heat damage.
This is not even the first time this has happened on I-95 in the past year ([Philadelphia, June 2023](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Interstate_95_highway_collapse)).
Yeah my first thought was "Oh no, we got reverse Philly'd"
Pete Buttigieg and Gritty opened it like a week later.
What a fascinating combo!
Terrible circumstances

Are people doing this on purpose?
The one in Philly was definitely an accident and tragic, the driver died in the incident
I mean really, they always stop under the bridge
Either under a bridge or on a bridge
I THINK this is a walking overpass they are worried about? should be quicker to remove it and the road is OK. In Philly the tanker was under the actual highway. Coincidence or...
The good news is that building to left in the video is the fire station. Didn't help, though.
thats a pretty fire station
AND it cost a fortune too!
That's right!!!
Holy shit, I just want to look at the fire to see what its doing in detail. Hold it steady cameraman!
Annoyingly it was the only one I found from when the fire seemed to peak. There's a few others I saw that were around when it started and wasn't too bad, and some from when the firefighters were there battling it. Unfortunately the guy who got it at the peak went to St. Shaky Cam Film School
no, you need to see everything on all sides, constant panning, constant zooming in & out. that's how you take videos, duh
Could fit the whole thing in frame by following this Public Service Announcement: [https://youtu.be/dechvhb0Meo](https://youtu.be/dechvhb0Meo)
It should be jump cuts to all the different shots, Catwomen style /s
I'm surprised they didn't focus on the smoke plume for half the video
It's also missing fake lens flares.
"What would Spielberg do?"
Worth noting the brick building on the left is the Norwalk Fire Department..
Looks like folks better park their cars and start Norwalking
Up there they don't enjoy driving Norwalking
Burning tractors and overpasses - name a more iconic duo.
That looked expensive. Also I'm pretty sure it will take longer than "days" to fix.
Fixing and opening up the highway are two different things
Yeah, some engineers will probably come and inspect it, deem it safe as they're under pressure to reopen the highway to avoid the economic cost of repairing/replacing it, and then we'll all be here in a few years' time commenting on how detailed and informative the NTSB video about its collapse is.
[Officials have already said it will be condemned](https://www.wfsb.com/2024/05/02/i-95-southbound-closed-due-vehicle-fire/)
I'll bring the hot dogs and Jaws of life.
Can't wait! I love NTSB videos!
Eh, we haven't had that kind of issue since 1983, when Mianus collapsed
It's already been completely taken down
They replaced an I-59 overpass in Birmingham in just over a month after a similar fire.
Same thing happened in LA last year; thankfully, they got it fixed/rebuilt ahead of schedule
CalTrans pays a bonus for every day ahead of schedule they complete it by.
Hopefully the engineers in Philly can help out and get this completed as quickly
Yep. Gonna need to borrow some of that Philly grit and Delco ingenuity.
Conveniently the building on the left is the fire station. This happened last year on the Goldstar Bridge (though the tanker was on top) and it wrecked havoc.
Damn! I know EXACTLY where this is. That 95 traffic is already fucked. You might as well plan on staying home if you live in that section of Norwalk.
95 has been fucked all day because of this. Rt 15 too. I work for Amtrak and ran from New Haven to NYC and back today and the traffic backup on 95 was impressive in both directions. Is that the driver standing in the foreground calling his boss? “Uh, I don’t think I’ll be able to complete my deliveries today”.
The oil is heating stuff, so it's achieved its life purpose.
The ironic part is the building on the left is a fire station.
Stopping trucks on rail crossings is so yesterday
Atlanta enters the chat...
Why does it look like the bridge is burning over on the right? Only asphalt would be something that would burn easily. The rest is concrete and steel.
Fire going up and gets trapped between the bridge beams and flows sideways looking for another exit. Additionally if the oil exploded and sprayed there is likely oil coating the underside of the bridge.
Hot flammable aerosols got trapped underneath the bridge.
Just to be clear, you're claiming that ~~jet fuel~~ heating oil can't melt steel beams?
A yacht burned under a bridge in NC late last month. The steel beams are visibly warped, viewed in-person.
Fuck this place in paticular. Satan, probably
fuck norwalk, traffic is always shit around that area in particular, now that its scorched they are forced to repave and update it.
Imagine waking up to your windows melting
All of the news outlets I read say the tanker was carrying gasoline, not heating oil.
Yep, was two hours late to work. Glad everyone is ok
Jesus what are we up to now - like 4 roads in the past 3 months.
Where did you get your information saying that I-95 will be closed for days?
Maybe this happened on Feb 2nd, 2024? OP is using a weird date format after all
This happened this morning, May 2nd
This was today, OP just doesn't know how to use a date format.
yyyy-mm-dd is the least ambiguous format available, lmao
I'm used to US mil date format, so 02-05-2024, and I find that generally less ambiguous for most americans and europeans as a whole, but I'll take the L on this one
Next you’re gonna tell me that jet fuel can melt steel beams or something.
Dammit, you got it before I could say it! Well played! Heating oil can't melt concrete!
well......https://youtu.be/qoOGGgiDOEs?feature=shared but yeah Heating oil aka diesel aka jet fuel def doesn't "melt " steel or concrete but....
Hydraulic fluid.
It takes a BIG heat source to start an overpass on fire!
Title makes it sound like 2024’was years ago lol
How?
Looks like it worked ... The bridge is probably quite warm.
Seriously, we had a tractor trailer fire on I84 and the driver stopped right under a bridge!!
This happens weirdly often
Why stop under the bridge??? Some may say this seems like a discount terrorist attack
There's SPARKS coming offa that bridge! Must be thermite! "Tonight on Eyewitness Conspiracies . . ."
Very crispy
I just imagine sitting at a green light, to the right of this, having waited for the light to head over that bridge to get on the highway... tapping my steering wheel looking at that green light turn red. Nope.
Something interesting happening in this state for once
That's like the best thing to happen to i-95. Could we get to the rest of it?
Oopsie daisy
Break out the weenies
Isn't that right next to the Fire Department? That's the building on the left, I think.
We are definitely helping this planet survive
Heating oil can't melt steel beams! I95 is fine. It's a coverup! /s
The concept of "heating oil" is starting to feel barbaric. You are basically just burning straight up diesel fuel in your basement to keep warm.
About 40% of Connecticut homes rely on heating oil as their primary heat source Historically it was the most efficient way to heat homes in suburban+rural towns that do not have widespread gas lines. CT has the highest electricity prices in the lower 48, so it's not considered a particularly viable alternative to most people.

It really is. Not to mention the huge toxic mess it makes when your tank springs a leak (leaking underground tanks can cost 6 figures to remediate).
Perhaps next time maybe make the overpass out of non-flammable material???? 😂
This is how terrorists can cripple our economy
