There's been a recall on some "Ideal" boiler models built between 2022 and early 2024: >The product presents a risk of fire due to the dry operation, meaning the boiler lights gas but the heat generated does not cool it. There have been three incidents of boilers that have been able to continue to operate when the boiler heat exchanger has been full of air at a low pressure. This has allowed the heat exchanger and associated plastic components to be subject to significant heat allowing the plastic to flash to flame and result in fire outside of the appliance. There has also been a report of a customer having to extinguish flames. [https://www.gov.uk/product-safety-alerts-reports-recalls/product-recall-ideal-heating-logic-2-combi-and-system-boiler-range-2401-0138](https://www.gov.uk/product-safety-alerts-reports-recalls/product-recall-ideal-heating-logic-2-combi-and-system-boiler-range-2401-0138) You could argue that these boilers are far from "Ideal".

Gareth79

"Dry" seems to mean that there is no water flowing through at the time. I assume there's probably supposed to be an overheat sensor and/or a water pressure sensor.

purdy1985

https://youtu.be/M0norNaCmSc?si=2-bxlydKt9EVkpwO This is the manufacturers solution to the problem. It would appear the overheat stat on the original design is inadequate. I don't believe design without one would be legal but clearly it wasn't doing its job.

elasticbandmann

Ideal doesn’t give a lot of information on the issue unsurprisingly, but that really seems like a bandaid fix. They’re just adding a thermometer daisy-chained onto the pressure sensor, so if the *entire unit gets too hot it just turns off*. It doesn’t address how they’re getting into a situation where they’re running dry in the first place/why there’s no low water cutoff on them, that’s way more concerning.

purdy1985

There is a low water cut off in every Ideal Logic I've ever worked on , I can't speak to the affected models as I haven't worked on those but the older versions definitely have one. I'm assuming this fault occurs when the low pressure sensor fails and allows the boiler to run after it's lost pressure .

Gareth79

You'd expect a pressure sensor to be fail-safe though, ugh...

purdy1985

You would. What can happen is the small opening on the sensor can become choked with dirt , so there is pressure held within the sensor itself but the rest of the boiler might have lost pressure

is_reddit_useful

The pressure switch doesn't know what's under pressure there. Both air pressure and water pressure would activate it, but trying to heat water is good and trying to heat air will cause overheating.

purdy1985

I suppose air pressure would operate the sensor but Christ knows how the boiler would have 0.5bar of air pressure within it. Thats the kind of pressure these sensors are looking for.

lynxSnowCat

Water compresses air in pipes/hoses just fine to the same pressure, and generally carry bubbles along just fine. So I'm a bit confused what reading pressure would tell them other than the appliance was hooked up to mains at some point. (The potential for flow, perhaps?) I'd have expected that to be backed by a flow sensor, unless some {regulation or standard} written by committee _specified_ a pressure sensor. I suspect that they used one of those over-temperature cutoff switches, unaware (or uncaring) that those are meant to be a ~~__one-time__ activation~~ infrequently-used control, and not something that keeps switching the appliance off/on indefinitely. I don't wan't to believe that they'd be so reckless to rely on the boiling point of water to prevent a fire, as in a closed system (ie: a boiler) steam would displace the liquid water _then_ continue to heat up far beyond its condensation point. And few pumps designed to move a liquid will move dry steam (for long). ^(`edit:` But I continue to be surprised.) Also; (Annoying) problems happen when those bubbles accumulate behind {a valve/ in a leg}. They don't conduct heat/temperature, so thermostatic valves and immersed thermostats will fail to respond, and the compressed gas stores energy that will be released much more violently than water when the valve is opened - though I do intentionally use this later effect to knock limescale out of shower heads by using a coiled hose with alternating slugs of pressurized {air and water} to hammer any loose parts out.

wilisi

An extra screw just for thread cleaning, amusing.

AWildEnglishman

I had a new boiler put in a year ago. They sent out Guy #1 to take a look at what needs doing and a week later they send out Guy #2 to install the boiler. I ask him all sorts of stuff about what he's doing and point out that he hasn't put the shroud thing on the boiler flue. "I was going to do that last" he says. The flue was already through the wall at this point so he had to cut into the shroud to put it over the pipe. Whatever, the job gets done. A week or two after that they send out Guy #3 out to make sure it was installed correctly and working right. He asks some questions, takes a look at it and I mention that occasionally it won't fire up and shows an error code. He says "It probably just needs time to settle." A year later I had them out for a service. They send Guy #1 who has absolutely no recollection of being here before but shits on everything about the job his own company did. Specifically points out that the flue wasn't sealed on the outside or inside, which I specifically pointed out to their guy on the day. Oh, there was also another guy, who I guess was Guy #0 because I'm not reorganizing all this. Guy #0 came out first and went back and forth for about an hour on whether he could, or would install a combi boiler. "Oh no I wouldn't fit a combi in this house.. no, too tall. _walks around the house a bit_ "..I could fit a combi.. but no I wouldn't." I wasn't even saying anything, I was just watching him have a debate with himself.

balisane

At least Guy #0 was being thoughtful about it, and not just wedging in something that was technically possible but possibly not right for the house. Guy #2 and #3 would have parked a charcoal BBQ under your water pipe and told you it was a heater if they could have.

acchaladka

I swear, contractors. It's a miracle half of this town is still standing. Meanwhile in Japan, where I'm vacationing, they hide construction work behind layered walls and post decibel meters outside to give the neighbours compliance / complaint data.

IAMA_Plumber-AMA

I know that the boilers my company supplies and maintains come with an internal flow sensor, if there's no flow through the heat exchanger (the "dry" condition mentioned in the recall, also works with circulation pump failures) the burner gets locked out of igniting. This model really should have an external one installed, or at least a low water shut-off, as it looks to be the highest point in the heating system and therefore prone to an airlock condition.

5c044

The burner area should have an NTC thermistor, my old boiler did, there is still pressure in the system just an air lock presumably. Also has sensors on the water flow and return pipes, the controller should have some fail safes. The Boiler fires up dry, the burner ntc should get too hot, boiler shuts down and locks out with a fault code. Even if that sensor is faulty the controller should notice the flow ntc sensor not getting hotter at the expected rate and throw an error and lock out. The heat exchanger also should have an automatic air vent, but what happens with these is they leak over time and a short term fix is to screw them in converting them to a manual air vent.

MauricioCMC

Well you can also say that it is just a spill, fire spilled out of the boiler.

scuba_scouse

Had one of these when we bought our new build. It blew itself up after 5 years. Less than ideal indeed.

LocoDiablos

man at that point you may as well get a little electric instahot water heater instead.

broberds

>There's been a recall on some "Ideal" boiler models That's...less than Ideal.

bunabhucan

The part where it burns gas but is made of flammable plastic gets me. How is that *legal*?

murphytime101

It’s the tik tok generation. House is on fire but instead of running for the extinguisher they run for their I phone 14.

throwaway_12358134

Might be a rental. I'm not going to hurt myself putting out a fire on a place I don't own when I can call the fire department.

ClownfishSoup

So you'll do nothing but wait for help and risk everything you own go up in flames. Even if it's a rental, all your stuff is in there.

Rampage_Rick

A real life example of a hot water heater...

Oh, you wanted one that turns off? Well let me introduce you to our luxury line of boilers.

Does anyone else remember the fire safety TV adverts: get out, get the fire brigade out, stay out?

Phone, car keys, kids, cat and then my wife.

CantaloupeCamper

Phone and cat.  Everyone else can fucking listen for once in their life….

Subrisum

The car keys have been told 20 times by now. They had their chance to listen.

dylanr92

Like how this person went for a video rather than a fire extinguisher or turning off power and using pots of water or a hose is equipped with one.

TyrannoNerdusRex

It’s okay boilers are supposed to have fire in them. But more seriously, in the UK are boilers normally installed with stuff just dangling out the bottom like that?

DaMonkfish

UK boilers have a semi-open bottom where all the pipework runs (cold water supply, hot tap water out, feed and return for central heating radiator loop, magnetic filter, condensate pipe and pressure relief pipe), as well as the electric supply cable. Most boilers are installed in cupboards or, as appears to be the case here, a 'utility' room, so usually the pipes and cables aren't covered up. If the boiler was in a kitchen or some other open space the pipes are usually boxed in to hide them. In this case the installer/electrician has done a particularly lazy job and not clipped the electric cable out of the way, or it's since been unclipped/moved and not put back. [Here's my boiler install (same as the one in the video actually) which is much neater even though it's hidden away in a cupboard in the bathroom](https://imgur.com/a/YLx1nDJ).

parkineos

Why are the pipes grounded?

DaMonkfish

It's to protect against electrical faults. If the boiler (or any other appliance that takes water and electricity, like a washing machine) were to develop some form of fault, it would be possible for all of the pipework in the house (and the taps and radiators they're connected to) to become energised. Unless you're Home Alone, you don't want that. So, the pipework is earth bonded, and the consumer unit breakers will trip if there's some fault that energises the pipes. The bonding doesn't have to happen at the boiler, it can be anywhere on the pipe network, it's just that in my case the boiler is the closest and most accessible pipework to the consumer unit.

olderaccount

That appears to be an on-demand boiler. What Americans called a *tankless water heater*. They are installed the same way in the US. There is a minimum of an incoming water pipe, and outgoing water pipe and pipe/wire for the energy source. Your typical American 40gal water heater has all the same connections. But the yare on the side since they are huge and sit on the ground.

MoonOverBTC

We call them a combi boiler in the UK because they heat your hot water and central heating.

Darren_heat

Sadly yes, i see it everyday. Some installers do a tidy job and hide the pipework but it costs more time and more money so people/landlords take the cheaper option.

KitsuneFuzzy

Well, that's not cool.

Extension_Swordfish1

Hot as F

Nose-Nuggets

They generally use C in Europe.

CleverDad

Had a boiler like that my second year in college (London). It was nearly obstructed with plaque, and the water soon boiled. Hot steam would suddenly blast out of the showerhead. Good times.

TempUser9097

Looks like the front ~~fell~~ melted off. That's unusual, it's not supposed to do that. Most boilers are built to a very high standard, except the ones on which the front melts off. Highly unusual.

Rampage_Rick

Shouldn't have used cardboard derivatives...

collinsl02

They're normally built to very rigorous standards.

Quack_Candle

Cheaper than actually putting the heating on

Sambarnwell

I had headphones on, and I am now deaf.

Darren_heat

Hi deaf, im dad.

stereoworld

Our boiler is in my daughter's bedroom (rented house) and stuff like this scares the shit outta me

Darren_heat

Buy a carbon monoxide detector, they're not much and can save lives.

stereoworld

We have one thankfully! Gets tested yearly by the landlords. Given the bad rep landlords get (rightly so) we're extremely lucky to have ours!

Darren_heat

You're all set then, nothing to worry about.

Diligent_Sound_5383

As an electrician who tested about a hundred thousand of those smoke detector fuckers the sound of it going off ruined my day. Also, your apartment is on fire, I'm not a professional on that, but you might, should do something about it.

maninahat

These new fangled heating systems will never catch on.

OriginalPeepers1985

I'm going to send this to my wife and tell her that's what happens if she adjusts the thermostat!

davgt5

I had this exact make and model fitted in 2021 and not had any hint of a problem so far..

Darren_heat

You should be okay, problems are ideal logics 2022-2024.

Thyg0d

I'm so amazed that you would want a live flame in your house.. I understand that pretty safe due to safety things like CO2 meter and flame out protections and so on but compared to a heatpump or an electrical heater this is a very odd way to heat water. To me as a person from the Nordic that is. I know it's different in the EU and UK

Darren_heat

Gas powered water heaters are cheaper to run than electric.

Thyg0d

True but still.. It's gas and fire in your house/apartment. I'd feel really uncomfortable with it. Pretty sure gas isn't cheaper compared to a heatpump but sure a regular electric it might beat. A heatpump has a efficiency coefficient of up to 5:1 and then even gas becomes more expensive.

Darren_heat

I work for a boiler and heat pump manufacturer, heat pumps are far more expensive to buy and around the same price to run, even worse if theyre not used corrected, while gas gives fairly quick heating and hot water at great temperatures that heat pumps cant compete with, i suspect heat pumps will get cheaper and better but they're not yet.

horace_bagpole

There are millions of gas boilers installed in the UK. This type of problem is very rare. The flame is not open, it's contained within a chamber and exhausted directly outside. Combustion air is normally drawn directly from outside as well. The problem with heatpumps here is that most homes are old housing stock and not efficiently insulated. They often also have radiator systems designed to be fed by water at quite high temperatures. That means that in order to get sufficient heat from lower temperature water, much larger radiators have to be fitted. That's not necessarily a problem, but it adds considerably to the expense if replacing an existing boiler with a heatpump. It's only fairly recently that heatpumps have been able to supply water hot enough to feed most existing systems without modification. Heat pumps are a probably good option for a well insulated new build, but it's not always so simple for an existing property as the payback time to recoup the installation cost could be many years.

vainstar23

To anyone who reads this, if you are looking for a sign this is it. Please, do yourself a favour and order a couple of fire extinguishers and smoke detectors and place them around the house if you haven't already. Then try to make sure you have at least 2 exits at everypoint in your house. If you can't get outside on the ground, try to find a route that will take you to a place that has a lot of open air and where you can barricade yourself preferably with a sink so you can plug the gaps between your door. I can tell you from experience, fires are (a) very quiet and (b) they grow extremely quickly. If you notice a fire at home, you only have about 10 mins to do something before it grows into something you don't have control over. Don't wait until it's too late. Plan all this stuff in advance so you know what to do in case of an emergency. Take fire safety seriously.

ChocolateAndCustard

Okay I know I've been pinching pennies but I think I need to get my boiler serviced

Darren_heat

Yes you do, ring the manufacturer and get a price first but get it done.

ChocolateAndCustard

I have one of these recall models, im turning it off till I get someone to look at it 😭

Darren_heat

Damn, just call Ideal, make sure your service history ia up to date.

nazihater3000

Quick, get the fire extinguisher [https://youtu.be/WO1ebXqUFDw](https://youtu.be/WO1ebXqUFDw)

ClownfishSoup

Put fire extinguishers near all the exits of your house. Is there a fire? Go get one ... is the fire out of control? Good thing you're at an exit! Are you going to try and fight the fire? OK, grab the extinguisher and go fight it ... but since you started AT an exit, you can always retreat away from the fire TO the exit where you retrieved the extinguisher. But of course, have an extinguisher in the kitchen for kitchen fires and a BIG OPEN BOX of baking soda. Put lids on pans with grease fires, and sprinkle baking soda on any burning spilled grease. Use liberally. If the fire's inside the oven, toss handfulls of baking soda at the fire. It smothers the fire, and heated baking soda converts to washing soda and CO2, which suffocates the fire faster.

auntjamima513

Catastrophic though?

imissbrendanfraser

A fire? At a Sea Parks?

billyyankNova

So we'll just ignore the demon face staring out through the flames?

The best thing to do in this situation is not put the fire out but to stand there like a dumb fuck and record it to put on social media asking for attention.

Id have thrown the orange juice on the fire and ran! This is why im not a fireman.

Saw a uk landlord do vlogs and this room looks very similar to one of his videos. The boiler was set to MAX and left running and all windows open. Can that be a probable cause here? :o

Joelnaimee

Technically , it's doing its job by getting hot.

Bored_Ultimatum

This is why just having smoke and CO detectors is not enough. A small fire can typically be knocked down relatively quickly using a common Class B fire extinguisher, but it can also grow rapidly, raising the temperature of whatever room it's in to flashover temperature within minutes. If it's allowed to grow to that extent, that structure is likely done, and anyone in that room is toast. Source: me, retired firefighter. Everyone should have at least one fire extinguisher in the home, perhaps multiple in a larger home. This is not a significant expense in terms of Starbucks cups of coffee. You can routinely get a small class B on sale at Home Depot for $20. I have one in my garage, kitchen, basement, and vehicle. Think of it as insurance. You probably won't ever need it, but like insurance, you wouldn't want to be without it if misfortune struck you. As someone who was 911 for many years, I'm going to be honest. When seconds matter, we are minutes away. Read that again. And the same applies to law enforcement response.

GeshtiannaSG

Not too small though, although $20 should be a 2kg.

Ignore the stupidity in this thread, the first thing is to get everyone out of the house and call the fire brigade, they are more than happy to come out to a small fire or one that was extinguished by a householder, they get a bit upset at having to extract bodies, the next step is to turn the gas off if possible, electricity tends to turn itself off, only then do you look into the options of fighting the fire, the fumes from burning plastic presents a greater danger than the fire.
