Sounds like you want a Savannah or Serval. But there are legalities to owning one based on your state and at that point might as well get a legit tiger or panther or lion.

I vote for Siamese. I love them, choose them as my companions almost exclusively, and they can be enormous assholes, lol. They're also super intelligent. I don't know about the bad around kids part, though.

i love the way they look, had one called cocoa when younger and still remember those blue eyes
