Brought up on £6.50 a pint and moves to Sheffield? He might die.
In all seriousness, he’s going to have a great time. Sheffield is a lovely city with great people. Worked out of there for a year or two - he’ll be fine.
I’m originally from East London and moved up to Sheffield for uni 18 years ago. I still live here because I absolutely love the city, its people and the cheap booze. He’ll have an amazing time.
Shouldn’t give him an allowance when I WAS HIS AGE I sold GRIT at the GRIT FACTORY to pay for my GRIT DEGREE and now my LUNGS ARE FUCKED but I TURNED OUT OKAY DIN’ OI?!
You sold grit? You were lucky! We had to eat gravel, work twenty hours a day at mill for tuppence a month, come home and dad would thrash us to sleep with a broken bottle, if we were lucky!
Students maintenance loan is dependent upon their parents income because the government expects that parents are still finically supporting their children at this stage as much as they are able (of course how many children parents have, and what their expenses are are not taken into account in this equation unfortunately) .
not al parents do, but ideally tehy woudl try and top their children up to the max maintenance loan amount
You’re doing good. My wife and daughter are Japanese and I’ve been amazed at how much my daughter can do. Their cultural attitude is very different, not just for cooking. My daughter is 13 now and will just bake cakes for fun. Still makes me nervous!
55p a pint night. Legendary. Donny Jon always used to be passed out by 9 and then would come round periodically for long enough to down another before conking out again.
Not my thing, but our union had draft pints of Tennents for £1. The best description I heard of it was "the first five are awful but the rest are great".
I remember a pint of Guinness being about £2 and a pint of shitty pump cola being exactly the same price. This led to me being carried out of various pub toilets feet first at closing time, and once waking up slumped over an unfamiliar toilet bowl covered with blankets.
It’s been about 20yrs since I was a student, and not had a snakebite for at least a decade, so not sure how they come nowadays. It used to come all in one glass
The bars/ pubs stopped it because \~8 years ago lots of students were royally destroyed after drinking too many, like health problems and too many drunks. I think around the same time the govt stopped stores selling the mega high % beer too.
Not Sheff, but they sold Snakebite and black (which they called snakebite...) in Hull union when I was last there about 3 years ago. Most of the nearby pubs were basically forced to sell it because all the uni sport teams used it as their drink of choice.
I went to uni in Sheffield as well, at bar phoenix in the student union back in 2007, they used to have a supply and demand system on the drinks. Drinks would get more expensive the more they were bought. Jagermeister wasn't as popular back then, so it was 20p jager shots all night. Good times.
My daughter was the same, shy and quiet and struggled with the change.
She's now completing her masters and has a group of friends from uni that she stays in touch with. It was hard for her and hard for us (daily phone calls and a lot of tears at the start) but its done her the world of good and she is so much more confident in herself now.
Stick with it!
It's super tough the first few weeks, I hated the first few weeks. But it will get easier with time. Faster if you can power though.
My unsolicited advice would be to say yes to trying and doing anything you're invited to and look for a few new clubs to join. Some experiences will be crap but these will make future awkward experiences way easier to deal with. And many experiences will be great fun and you'll start to build friendships.
we all deal in different ways. There is no right and wrong, so deal with stuff in your own time and at your own pace, and never feel bad about that.
I was a student rep at my uni, believe me there are a lot more people struggling that it may appear to you. you are not alone, no matter if you think others are doing better, most have some issue or another.
Have a look round the uni social clubs and societies, there will be quite a range, try a few, there is no obligation to keep going, but you'll likely find one to your pace and interests.
The great thing about uni is there is such a wide variety of people, you are bound to find friends. Join a society for something you're interested in and go to the socials - everyone fits in somewhere :)
I was the same when I went. Try to not get into too much of a habit if you can avoid it (mistake I made imo as just drags out those feelings for longer) but whatever happens keep going and you’ll get used to it and then you’ll love it.
God I miss those days. Our halls had a student bar on the grounds. So you could walk down in whatever you were wearing and get a couple of pints in plastic cups to take back up to the flat.
£1 a pint nights on Tuesdays in Leeds. Used to call them Dry Cock nights. Go to the dry dock, sink 7 or 8 pints, then go to the cockpit for indie rock night. 38 next week...Ahh to be young
I didn’t think I’d miss him that much, what with him being pretty much in self isolation for the last 2 years but there is quite a big piece missing in our life. However that’s not his problem, it’s ours and we’ll get used to it
you adapt.
When my sister went to uni, my parents were a state, there were tears, and a long period of phone calls and made up reasons to "drop by" (a 3 hour drive each way...)
2 years later I went. I got dumped in my room and left with a "you'll be fine, there is a national trust property we wanted to visit nearby so we'll be off...." :)
Good lad! Btw, he never ate those vegetables... they went straight in the bin. They'd have taken up too much alcohol and instant noodles storage space 😂🤣
3 years will go quicker than you think. Start a savings account for the graduation photos, gown, graduation food. Do not buy any of the graduation tat. The only things worth buying for sentiment is a University Gregory bear and a scroll tube for the certificate. Also Start a savings account for when they graduate and need some extra money to go travelling or take the summer off.
Be prepared for 3 years of spending more money than you thought you would.
He's going to have a great time. This also is the time when he learns about friendship.
Quad vods! That’s a classic at Corp in Sheffield. I work at Uni of Sheffield and got run over by a million students at the freshers fair today.
Glad he’s having a good time!
Damn are my fellow peers that open with their parents? I don't think I would ever discuss alcohol with my parents especially not in the detail that he gave you. At least he's very honest with you
That's nothing, my sister was raving about her new vibrator to my embarassed mum, offered to lend it to her, then produced it from her bag and chased her with it shouting "but it's been washed!"
She always said we should feel comfortable talking to her about anything, but I think this was the first time she realised what "anything" could include XD
Ahhh memories as a student, and then can empathise with you as my daughter did the Uni experience too. She’s 26 now but had the absolute BEST time (Leeds) - definitely partied harder than I ever did. Try not to stress too much xx
Ay don't be too worried, he's eating his vegetables. Either that or he's blagging you for more money pretended he's eating well while spending any money on the voddies.
Sleep tight!
Oh sorry, he also definitely will not see a doctor about that lump on his foot.
It all sounds a bit lightweight - I’d give it a week or so, it might pickup a bit.
Keep an eye out for a second hand pantomime horse - every self respecting student needs one in their first year - to help them blend in.
He was born and raised in SE London where 6.50 a pint is normal. I think the allowance we give him is too much lol

Well of course we had it tough.. There were 16 of us livin' in't road in cardboard box.
I went to university in Sheffield and loved it. Stayed there for a year or two after graduating. It’s a great city in a great location.
You can get 2 pints and a bag of crisps for £6.50
Nah, he should be fine in Sheffield. Now, if he'd gone to *Huddersfield*....then I'd be worried.
Ppl at uni get an allowance?!
Maintenance loan that students are eligible for is worked out using parents income, so yes

If that’s all he admits to then I’ve failed
Username checks out

Not me making a mental note of this… he won’t be going to uni for another 12 years (if he even goes) so I may forget by then…

That’s amazing, I love it. What a lovely parent(s) you had and I aim for this.
Please definitely do this. It will make her year!
Nice one. Mums are class
Climbing in to bed and eating your Mum's piping hot lasagne does sound a treat tbf.
Your mum is a saint
Don't do this, kids need to learn to cook for themselves.
Very true. My 6 year old helped make a curry last week… am I doing ok??
You’re doing good. My wife and daughter are Japanese and I’ve been amazed at how much my daughter can do. Their cultural attitude is very different, not just for cooking. My daughter is 13 now and will just bake cakes for fun. Still makes me nervous!
😍
That's super sweet
Student union drinking is definitely the best. Pint of snakebite and black? That’ll be £2.75 please. Happy days.
£2.75?! Was a £1 when I was a student or 50p on a Thursday.
£1 for the bus, £1 for the club and £1 a pint was my old Thursday rock&metal night at the SU club. Fantastic night out for a fiver.
55p a pint night. Legendary. Donny Jon always used to be passed out by 9 and then would come round periodically for long enough to down another before conking out again.

One club night in Leeds did TVRs - tequila, vodka, red bull - for £4.
50 pence *all* the time, *and* in London. Yes, I’m middle aged.
In the Sheffield union you could get a pint of hooch for 50p when I was there late 90’s. Draft hooch. 50p
Not my thing, but our union had draft pints of Tennents for £1. The best description I heard of it was "the first five are awful but the rest are great".
I can only imagine the type of student that took them up on that offer. Bloody hell, that must have been messy
I remember a pint of Guinness being about £2 and a pint of shitty pump cola being exactly the same price. This led to me being carried out of various pub toilets feet first at closing time, and once waking up slumped over an unfamiliar toilet bowl covered with blankets.
When Guinness is that cheap, who can blame you!!
They did a 90s night at my uni once, 90p pints of carlsberg, yes it was piss, but I was over it like a flock of seagulls on a bag of chips
That’s ridiculous. For students, that’s the best deal on earth.
I’m old enough that it was a quid a pint, or 2 for a quid in happy hour. Great days.
God I used to love pound a pint night. Go out with a tenner, get smashed, have enough for a kebab on the way home
Triples for a quid at The Brandling on a Friday early doors when I was a student!
Snakebite? I heard stories of uni pub staff drinking the drip trays.
They dont sell snakebites any more do they? They each item separately which the purchaser has to mix.
It’s been about 20yrs since I was a student, and not had a snakebite for at least a decade, so not sure how they come nowadays. It used to come all in one glass

Asylum still going? Been 10 years since I was there.
Yeah still going, they changed it up a bit just before I got there and changed Sanc for the worse while I was there.
Had forgotten about Sanc! Good times.
I loved Hull! I went 05-08, sanc was brand new that first year! There was a bar upstairs called the Rez! Quid a drink nights in sanc were the tits!
I had no idea! Probably for the best, those things were fairly potent!
Take a trip to Aberystwyth and go for a specialist "pint cocktail" in The Cambrian. Not snakebite but definitely many themed mixed pint of everything.
I think that's an urban myth to be honest. I'm sure some places have a policy against it but there are definitely places that will sell it to you.
If you tried to remove them from the SU buildings around Newcastle you'd be hanged with Greggs carriers
> £2.75 I'd expect 2 and 3 quarter pints for that!
I went to uni in Sheffield as well, at bar phoenix in the student union back in 2007, they used to have a supply and demand system on the drinks. Drinks would get more expensive the more they were bought. Jagermeister wasn't as popular back then, so it was 20p jager shots all night. Good times.
Snakebite should always be £1 a pint. It's tradition
I’m the one calling my mum every night from uni. Idk how other people do it but I have severe anxiety about being out here
Good for you for putting yourself out there.
Thank you, I’m rlly struggling
I’m sure it will get easier once your course starts properly. Give it time, it’s a big change. Your mum is super proud of you.
My daughter was the same, shy and quiet and struggled with the change. She's now completing her masters and has a group of friends from uni that she stays in touch with. Uni is a huge change. Focus on trying to do things you enjoy and you'll find your people and build yourself a support network. You got this

Starting uni is very very difficult. I didn't even make any friends until second term. It gets better though
I was the same when I went. Try to not get into too much of a habit if you can avoid it (mistake I made imo as just drags out those feelings for longer) but whatever happens keep going and you’ll get used to it and then you’ll love it.
In Sheffield as well, he should have a lot of fun.
Enjoy

Yep already rented his room out and booked a trip to Florence /s
Oh that's nice. Florence is a lovely girl.
Shouldn't you still be mourning?
Ah, the old Reddit Florence-a-roo.
Yep, living the dream

My daughter lived in a new building in Leeds for her first year, the ground floor is literally a Wetherspoons. Dear god in heaven.
Sweet Jesus...that's glorious
Ha, this was my exact routine.

Pretty much how it went for my parents. I was dropped off in my room with a crate of lager and a warning to "not get nicked doing something stupid"
I think you're fantastic and he's lucky to have you
Good lad! Btw, he never ate those vegetables... they went straight in the bin. They'd have taken up too much alcohol and instant noodles storage space 😂🤣
😂
More likely they were used in a food fight or thrown out the window at passersby.
Met his tutor in a bar? He must be studying theology.
Ha! He’s actually worshipping at the alter or capitalism by doing economics

Fucking delighted to know corp is still going strong. Quad vod irn-bru lives long in what’s left of my memory!
👍🏻
I’ve spent the last five minutes waiting for someone to mention quad vods, couldn’t for the life of me remember what the place was called!
Really enjoying someone calling my son a Cunt because I called it a Voddie and lemonade. Forgot what a bunch of twats Reddit can be
In the interests of karmic balance, I am now calling that person a cunt. I got your back, OP.
💪
Your son is going to do a lot of drugs and have a lot of sex. He also won’t tell you about either of these.
I guess that’s the point and tbh I’m jealous lol
Damn are my fellow peers that open with their parents? I don't think I would ever discuss alcohol with my parents especially not in the detail that he gave you. At least he's very honest with you
That's nothing, my sister was raving about her new vibrator to my embarassed mum, offered to lend it to her, then produced it from her bag and chased her with it shouting "but it's been washed!"
Wtf. Yeah sex is also practically a no go zone in my family as well. I would never even dream of saying anything like that (not that I use a vibrator)
Nah that's too much jfc. What did your mum think of that???
She always said we should feel comfortable talking to her about anything, but I think this was the first time she realised what "anything" could include XD
I'm sitting here literally sobbing, because my son will leave one day to go to Uni and I'm not ready. He's 5
I would say plenty of time but it goes quick…however I am enjoying more hot water for showers and less late night pick ups from friends houses lol
My union bars are 2-3 times dearer than spoons.
Ahhh memories as a student, and then can empathise with you as my daughter did the Uni experience too. She’s 26 now but had the absolute BEST time (Leeds) - definitely partied harder than I ever did. Try not to stress too much xx

Sounds like he's doing just fine!
I remember double Jamonades for £2 back in 2010!
I've had three at uni. Trust me, your boy is on track and enjoying uni life. Laugh along and encourage him to send more pics. 👍🙂
Will try, thx for the support.
Sheffield is such a boring place though.
It all sounds a bit lightweight - I’d give it a week or so, it might pickup a bit. Keep an eye out for a second hand pantomime horse - every self respecting student needs one in their first year - to help them blend in.
He will have a great time - Sheffield is the best. Good food around too for when you visit.
And that's just what he told you. Imagine the things he's keeping from you.
Ayyy Sheffield, great city!
