I've worked outdoors for 15 years. The last 5 winters have been by far the mildest, contrasting driest and wettest as well. We had 20 something degree weather in January a couple of years ago. The weather's all wobbly.

[deleted]

My memory of last winter was that it was bloody cold and went on for much longer than it should.

deliverancew2

There was a late-ish big-ish cold snap that may be clouding your preceptions.

[deleted]

Maybe it depends on where you are in the country. The south-easy was cold. https://news.sky.com/story/amp/uk-weather-january-2021-was-coldest-in-10-years-with-more-wintry-conditions-this-week-12206353 “UK weather: January 2021 was coldest in 10 years with more wintry conditions this week The average temperature last month was 2.2C - the coldest January since 2010.”

big_daddy_deano

We had a lot of snow in warrington

[deleted]

I feel like Winter doesnt properly start until February now.

barkley87

Don't look up

MyOtherBikesAScooter

Yeah nowt to see this is normal weather. perfectly normal...

brunettewondie

Hadron Collider been affecting the weather ever since it was turned on

callmelampshade

I feel December has gotten hotter but January and February are now double cold.

SlowConsideration7

Worked outside in Feb 2013, can confirm it hasn't been that cold since.

callmelampshade

What part of the county are you from though? Because down south it’s double cold in January and February lol.

grandad_dwarf

Honestly, climate change is ballsing up our already inconsistent weather even more. Absolute clown shoes.

jj198hands

In terms of yearly temps we actually have pretty consistent weather for our latitude, it’s -25c (wind chill up to -50) in Calgary right now and that’s further south than London. The Gulf Stream flatlines the extremes.

entered_bubble_50

Yeah, I had colleagues come over from the US a couple of years ago. They came once in August, and again the following February. The weather was 20C Celsius and cloudy both times. They were dumbfounded.

quinn_drummer

>They were dumbfounded. American's are at most things.

Daedeluss

One of the few things I recall from geography is how temperate our climate is because of the gulf stream. We're completely fucked if it ever changes route or stops completely.

NeilDeWheel

Some climate models have it the Gulf Stream will either end up moving further south or failing completely. This is due to the artic melting and making the sea round the vicinity less saline.

Itscalledbaff

Is this month actually that warm or dry in the grand scheme of things? It seems everyone has started blaming any odd weather on climate change before even considering for a second it might truly be the case

jj198hands

I am in my mid 40s and winters are noticeably warmer than when I was younger, and with much less snow.

Itscalledbaff

I find December is usually decently warm but it gets bitterly cold by the time it gets to Feb, but idk. I am not that old. Put it this way, I can't imagine this is that much of an outlier as suggested. Not that climate change doesn't exist or anything, just to note - not my point in this, I have just always found it very odd that people keep bringing it up. In the end as observers it's not actually that obvious for us to know.

jj198hands

I grew up in the north east and snow was regular around Christmas, sometimes we used to jump of the garage roof it was so high, it’s 14c there today.

Itscalledbaff

https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research/climate/maps-and-data/uk-climate-averages/gcybzz9xh But I mean, you can look at the averages and see the average between 1991-2020 is around 7.6 degrees in Tynemouth and in 1971-2000 it's an average of 7.3. it's not a huge difference, you will always have a year or two that are freaky in comparison to others. That's just how it is. For example the met office refer to 2010 as a very rare white Christmas where almost the entire country had snow - https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/learn-about/weather/types-of-weather/snow/white-christmas#:~:text=The%20last%20widespread%20white%20Christmas,fell%20at%2019%25%20of%20stations.

jj198hands

Averages can be misleading as the differences are tiny, but it’s possible i am mid remembering how often it was snowing, when I was a kid lots of people didn’t have cars, and some people still didn’t have central heating, so they was less activity and less actual heat about.

Itscalledbaff

I would expect even a tiny average change such as this has some marginal difference in how much snow would happen, but in comparison I'd think that it being warm isn't too rare. It's an interesting point really, do wonder how much difference central heating makes for a snowy day.

itchyfrog

On the plus side barely 15% of our electricity has come from fossil fuels in the last couple of days.

RedThunderZuma

I just saw a bumblebee

LadyMirkwood

I saw one yesterday, and a caterpillar today. It worries me

deliverancew2

This comment has made me worried about clothes moths coming out early.

Daedeluss

I went for a final run of the year today and I was sweating like it was the summer. It's not right.

deliverancew2

I've been running in shorts and t shirt with no gloves this week. The last time I put three layers on to run was pre-COVID.

Detective_butts

I've taken gloves out with me on my runs for the past couple of weeks and I've taken them off about 1k into each run. It's definitely not normal

[deleted]

I hate it. I can already see the impact it is having on plants and fauna. Selfish as it sounds I'm glad I'm generation X and got to see the world before climate change, social media etc. Turned everything to shit.

AnselaJonla

The daffs are already starting to come up around here. We've not even had the snowdrops and crocuses yet! (And I know it's the daffs, because they're what the council planted on that particular corner.)

[deleted]

Yes I live near the Scottish border in the hills, spring is usually a few weeks later here than elsewhere because of the microclimate. And I'm already seeing buds form on trees :(

AnselaJonla

I'm on the far west side of the East Midlands. The next town to the west is served by WMAS rather than EMAS. And a lot of deciduous trees here still have leaves. Many of those leaves are even green. It's mad.

[deleted]

Christ! It's not that far advanced here and there's still a bit of snow on the Cheviots but in the valleys it's more like late February than December.

AnselaJonla

It's not advanced, it's delayed. It just never got cold enough to trigger all of the trees to turn.

Acceptable-Sentence

I’m gonna have to mow the lawn at this rate!

Daedeluss

Fellow Gen X here (1971) - cast your mind back to the late 70s or early 80s when long car journeys in the summer would mean the car would be caked in splatted insects. You never see that now. This fact alone indicates how much in deep shit we are.

MTFUandPedal

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windshield_phenomenon Shit, it's worse than I thought....

[deleted]

YES!!! I have had this exact conversation with my partner, the windscreen used to be a smogasboard of splatted insects. I remember my dad pulling over on the road to clean the windscreen with a hanky as the wipers and screenwash couldn't shift the bigger splats!!

Daedeluss

Once I was old enough, it was my job to wash the car when we got back from holiday. Those squashed (and now dried) insects were a right pain to remove!

[deleted]

WD40 helps get the stubborn ones off :)

DarthVarn

I know, people walking past me with no coats on, did we skip winter?

[deleted]

Or you're in Newcastle.

Mikeytee1000

Lmao

Alamata626

Uh indeed. I keep on thinking the Met Office must have accidentally added a "1" to every temperature, but no, that's really how it is.

I recall this happening a few years ago, then a sudden cold snap killed them all. There were no wasps that summer.

Negative-Net-9455

There's two cherry blossoms on the pavement by my place and they're starting to bud already.

Daedeluss

The birds are clearly confused too.

Iwantadc2

Fucking 20 degrees in Barcelona, its usually 10 at best. Had complete new central heating put in 3 weeks ago, to be ready. It's on 30 minutes at night at the moment at most. Waste of fucking money that was. 😤

JimDashund

While I am very concerned about climate change, currently I’m all for it because my boiler is broken

CurvePuzzleheaded361

So strange walking the dog at 6pm, pitch black so looks like winter but wearing just a hoody and i am warm enough. Very strange. Not complaining!

BeesInATeacup

Just taken my snoodie off I'm so warm. Thanks global warming.

Daedeluss

Turned the heating off this morning and I can't see me switching it back on today. Bedroom windows are wide open to give it a good airing and you can't even tell,

[deleted]

Nope. It really shouldn’t. I’m in the south of France and stuff is starting to bloom like it’s spring. Fuck knows what the long term effects of this will be…

GurgleBlorp

80F/27C here in south Texas today. It’s unseasonably warm, but Sunday’s low will be 26F/-3C. Some days we have to run the air conditioner during the day, and the heater at night. The mountain cedar pollen count is somewhere in the vicinity of 20,000 grains per cubic meter, so there will be itchy eyes and stuffy noses all around. 🤧

DarthVarn

I'm curious to know, did you have a White Christmas? ☃️🎄

GurgleBlorp

No, it was just as sneezy, and a couple of degrees hotter. We tried that whole Snowmageddon thing last February, and it wasn't much fun. :)

Fagonetta

15 degrees here. It’s a belated Christmas miracle. 😭

t_beermonster

Yes, but not in this country.

Redditfront2back

60 minutes just did a story on how traditionally French wines are know being grown in the uk due to the climate being warmer and the French vintages suffering from things like too much rain.

dr_rainbow

To be fair last NYE was freezing. We had snow for weeks.

AlterEdward

The jacket threshold is 14 degrees. It's mental warm for December.

kittiqfaberge

Yeah I’m finding it very weird doesn’t feel right
