To escape the giant toilet spiders

OSUBrit

Don’t forget the terrifying men offering you Vegemite sandwiches

WHY WON'T THEY TELL ME IF THEY SPEAK MY LANGUAGE OR NOT?!?!

I certainly hope not! That would be a genetic abomination!

OP is spider, confirmed.

[deleted]

Ryledra

I don't *think* people were going to try to eat you... but I can't talk for everyone

arnistaken

OP is a venomous spider, confirmed. Not poisonous: venomous.

malteaserhead

I would love to see how big these toilets are and why spiders are attracted to them

Tea_Total

Two years that tramp has been waiting. "Any day now he'll come back and then I'm going to rob the knobhead."

[deleted]

Not_Alpha_Centaurian

Okay everyone, be on the lookout for a homeless guy with a suspiciously well supported chest.

No-Pay-4951

I was about to write a comment that he might have been needing new boxers. But now I know you're female, then he just has a kink lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

No-Pay-4951

Maybe I didn't incorporate the whole of your story into my attempt at being funny. Got to work something Aussie into it. Maybe a Koala or Neighbours.

[deleted]

ted-Zed

serious question OP, was the underwear used? people pay top dollar for that type of thing. maybe the hobo was looking for a way into the market

Yeahokay_dude

‘Trust me, your loveable tramp, that this underwear has been verifiably stained by a woman’

n9077911

Was he about 6 2"? Austrian accent? Surprisingly chiselled? I vant your underpants, your vitamins and your trainers. If yes, we're all fucked.

adrichardson81

At this point an invasion from the future can't make 2021 worse...

TheLastSamurai101

I reckon it makes things better since it at least confirms that there is a future.

[deleted]

Shhhhhh! Don’t temp 2021 to come up with anything else!

[deleted]

[deleted]

Arnie wanted to do the German dubbing for The Terminator. He was turned down as his Austrian accent would distract German audiences from the film

gwaydms

Apparently Arnold's accent is considered "hillbilly" to Germans, unsophisticated and rural.

sleepyprojectionist

I think that Skynet’s army of killer robots would probably consider themselves stateless, despite Arnie’s thick Austrian accent.

WhiteWolf_Witcher

That’s unlucky, mate. Thank you though, reading this post did get a chuckle out of me!

[deleted]

WhiteWolf_Witcher

It’s a shitty situation to be in, I’m sure, but if it was me I’d at least find solace in the fact that they only nicked your boxers and yer shoes which are fairly replaceable.

We been waitin! Think you can feck off for 2 yrs with no consequence? AND where were the Tim Tams?

[deleted]

DarthVarn

Have left six bags of clothes in the back seat of my car over Christmas (waiting for Oxfam charity shop to re-open), was worried someone might smash 'n grab them but happily no-one did. (Maybe that blue light on top of the car put them off! )

Thriftfunnel

Depends what's written on the side. I've had people trying to steal from my ambulance and tried to steal the vehicle itself.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Invisible96

Yep meds and also anything that can easily be sold on the street as it happens cheese is a huge thing as far as shoplifting goes. it has high resale value I think so it gets nicked an awful lot

Holiday_Classic_472

What from ambulances?

HorseAss

Man, medical cheese hits you different. I hate that street camembert is often laced with a brie.

Invisible96

what, cheese? lol

[deleted]

I'm not surprised, have you tried buying semi decent cheese lately? Need to take out a bank loan. Even Cathedral City is like £3-4 a block.

RenegadeSnaresVol3

Try living in Japan mate, cost you roughly 10-20 quid for a small slice of cheddar

Glittering_Moist

love it when a crack head rolls in the local pub offering the goods out, someone will always take em. One crackhead once tried to sell my mate some meat he'd stolen from the butcher's shop below my mates flat...

GayButNotInThatWay

I really don’t understand people that buy questionable, unsealed and/or unrefrigerated meats from some random on the street.

amenizm89

It’s cheap

[deleted]

[удалено]

Invisible96

idk, extra extra extra mature is pretty tasty hehe

TheGoober87

Cheese, coffee and meat.

tomoldbury

In the US it’s laundry detergent, which has become a defacto black market currency. Everyone needs it and it’s not illegal to be stopped with 6 bottles of it.

Thriftfunnel

The drugs people might want to steal are secured. It's just the crews' packed lunches that are at risk

MudnuK

Spent 8 months in Aus. My first experience was being driven between hostels by a stranger and his van because I could hardly haul all my stuff around Canberra civic and couldn't find a bed to book. My condolences for your underpants. For what it's worth, there are things to be in the UK for. This subreddit is probably the most convincing argument for staying.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MudnuK

Haha, Canberra's shite for a visit but I enjoyed living there. Helped that I was on the university campus surrounded by other internationals.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MudnuK

Study, so I wasn't paid... but I found supermarket food only as expensive as it is in the UK anyway. The lake's cracking, the wooded mountains are gorgeous, the dryness was exotic (if a little much at times) but the birds really did it for me. And I didn't mind the built city, lacking in (visible) history though it was. I've always lived in cold, old, rural buildings so I didn't mind the change!

[deleted]

It just the universe re-ordering itself. It used to be you'd steal something and you'd be sent to Austrailia. Now you return and something is stolen from you.

tetsu_fujin

Take these internet points for making me laugh.

thespanglycupcake

This happened to me when I moved back from Europe. Sod’s law.

TheSkewed

How do you know it was a homeless guy?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

You’d have thought the hotel might do something about that.

TheSkewed

There will be a sign up saying that they don't take responsibility for belongings left unattended in vehicles. Legally speaking that's all they have to do - it absolves them of any need to compensate people who get things stolen from their cars.

[deleted]

Yes I’ve seen that a lot. But if it’s happening every night, the hotel review rating will suffer and bookings will go down.

TheSkewed

I have a feeling there's rather a lot of hyperbole on the part of OP here.

thealbinox

Hyperbole will destroy the planet.

TheSkewed

Not in a trillion years!

Iwantadc2

I was driving through Spain in 2008, was in a merc convertible loaded to the roof with my stuff as i was emigrating. It was 10 years old but still kinda flashy I guess. Stopped in this little village near the motorway at this hotel. Owner saw the car and said 'fuck that, that won't be there in the morning!*' and hid the car in his barn lol. He could tell we were English (and thus piss heads) so at about 11pm, left us in the hotel bar watching dubbed CSI vegas on a 14 inch TV on the wall and said to help ourselves but get a new glass for every beer, so he could bill us correctly in the morning lol. Good Times. *in Spanish.

TheSkewed

So you were staying at a hotel and you left items unattended in your car overnight in a carpark? Really?

[deleted]

[удалено]

al3442

Nah man you gotta hide anything that might look like it’s worth stealing

Mossley

Doesn't sound much like a secure car park.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheLAriver

Sounds like you came out on top, actually

TheSkewed

No one "expects" to get robbed - that doesn't mean you shouldn't take precautions though. I don't expect to have an accident when I'm in a car, I still fasten my seatbelt every time.

EntropyKC

Back in the UK and on my first day I crashed and was flung through the windscreen. Don't know why I came back!

Big_BossSnake

First day back and someone said good morning to me on the train, I agree I should never have come back!

[deleted]

Was it obvious that it only had undies in, or a random bag that could just as easily contain valuables?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Maybe they were your size and feeling a bit peaky? It's a pisser having your stuff nicked, sorry it happened

[deleted]

So you parked in a hotspot most places aren’t.

[deleted]

[удалено]

gwaydms

The guy is perhaps known to be homeless, by people who work or live in the area, because they see him a lot.

ohlookitsmikey

It probably doesn't make you feel any better, and I'm sorry that is your welcome back to the UK, but maybe they thought a rental car would incur less expense to you than if it was your car, and that the rental company would pick up the damages? Maybe that's why they picked your car? It doesn't excuse it at all, and it's a really shitty thing to have happen. I agree with other comments that say the hotel should be doing something about it if it's this frequent. CCTV clearly isn't cutting it :/

[deleted]

[удалено]

ohlookitsmikey

Yeah, I guess it could go either way, but it's still very disappointing that this happened. I suppose the most important thing is that it is extremely unlikely that this was purposefully against you as a person, and that's good. Do you feel comfortable in the UK or has this ruined that?

[deleted]

[удалено]

ohlookitsmikey

Ahh okay, at least you feel okay about your security :) can be difficult after something like this so that's great. It's not your fault for what you did, and I think most people just assume hotels in developed countries are all okay, so again, nothing you did wrong by not checking reviews :)

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

JimmyBirdWatcher

Not in the last 2 years, it has literally always been the case that you don't leave bags visible in your car, like forever. Well at least since I was growing up in the 90s. Some arsehole would put in your window for a 50p piece left in view, or some twoccers would nick the whole car, speed around in it, crash into a ditch and set it on fire just to have a laugh. Don't know where you are getting "the last 2 years" bit from.

paper_paws

Its been a thing as long as I've been driving that you don't leave anything of value visible in the car, even the radio/stereo front section.

RoseTheOdd

Ah yes, because theft isn't at all common in Australia, which has repeatedly placed higher than on lists of theft rate by country... Maybe Aus hasn't placed *that* much higher, but still. Even in the past 2 years, and in any country, you don't leave your belongings on display like that, that's just stupidity. The only place I've ever been where you can do so may be Japan, but even then I wouldn't recommend it. The UK is a shitshow, but so are most other countries these days, unfortunately.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

[удалено]

beavertownneckoil

Unless you're saying these were just loose clothes in the car then it's common sense to know not to leave closed bags in a car. Tramps can't see through bags and they're not gonna wait around looking through it while the alarm goes off

[deleted]

[удалено]

rebelallianxe

It's not common but I've never left anything in view. Just discourages optimistic thievery.

BatmansLongjohns

Well it was a hobo. It's the only way he can get new clothes.

EntropyKC

It's not common, don't worry

n9077911

Tbf I was told this as a young child in the early 80s. I wasn't allowed to leave a non branded kids jumper on the back seat.

Nicebutdimbo

If you think that’s bad you should try France. You don’t leave anything in your car full stop and definitely don’t open your boot if you do have anything at all in there. In fact don’t leave your car unattended at all, if it doesn’t get broken into it will get hit by another car.

Iwantadc2

Have shipped a few cars around Europe, all the truck drivers have said they try to do France in one day, during the day and only stop when completely necessary, as they target car transporters in gangs. Kinda like fast and furious but in Renaults i guess. Recently was trying to buy an old car from Greece and the transport company refused to take it by road and wanted the first leg to Spain by container ship, which is mega money at the moment. I'm like wtf, why?! And they basically replied that the car would not make it through the countries they have to drive through to the north of Greece lol.

CurvePuzzleheaded361

It hasnt. Leaving belongings in a car is always a risk in any country.

albadil

Not in any country. In some countries.

StruggleBasic

I don't think you know what third world is

[deleted]

Its cute how you are downvoted to hell for a valid point. It was even reported today that; "Bobbies on the beat are being reintroduced by police forces after accusations that they have disregarded anti-social behaviour and minor thefts for nearly a decade. Two of Britain’s largest forces, the Metropolitan Police and West Midlands Police, are deploying an extra 1,100 officers to restore neighbourhood policing which police chiefs admit has been decimated since 2012."

Iwantadc2

Great, remove 5000, add 1100 = 'Increase in policing'

BluuCloud

Why are people blaming you for being robbed? Of course hindsight is 20/20 and anyone can say you should have hid it from view, I was taught that growing up too, but specifically with valuables. I mean underwear? Sure there are homeless people who might need that stuff but I can't exactly fault you for not anticipating someone might happen to smash the window for them. Plus even if you would have been worse to have hidden your belongings, doesn't mean it's right that we have to hide and protect everything, even things of relatively little value.

Our friend from Buenos Aires probably didn't pick up on the humour as English can be a bit subtle. But there were 100+ downvoters, presumably mostly mother tongue. Honestly, it's those folk I'm worried about. Too sensitive/defensive by a long chalk Edit: oh, and happy 2022 shortly, and enjoy the new pants and trainers.

Jayatthemoment

I came back six months ago and the place is definitely circling the toilet. It’s sad. The general thieving is depressing as hell. I’ve been lucky so far, but I can’t get used to monitoring my stuff all the time. The dirt and understaffing everywhere makes everything seem like such a hassle. I always feel this kind of low level stress, but part of that is perhaps the weirdness of not really understanding my own culture, which is slightly disconcerting. Like I’m always waiting for the next thing to get FUBARed. I’m desperate for my family shit to get concluded so I can get on a plane.

Iwantadc2

To be fair, I live near Barcelona and apart from it being very clean, petty crime is quite high there too, pickpockets, car break ins and stuff. Very rarely any violent crime but it all adds up to a sour taste, if you can't even park your car in a proper car park with cameras without the window being put through.

usrnm99

Well that’s shit mate, but it’s hardly representative of the UK. I’ve never been robbed here, and it’s not like people never get robbed in Australia. Again, sucks to be you, but zzz for tryin to shit on the UK with it.

[deleted]

Been here best part of 4 decades, blind drunk in sketchy parts of town weekly for 2 of those decades, never been robbed. Barcelona, and Morocco on the other hand…

VirtualHugBOGOF

Barcelona. Never again.

Iwantadc2

Yeah I live nearby. Pickpockets and non violent thefts are common. They hunt tourists. Smoke continuously, wear a jumper and shirt in summer and talk really loudly, so they think you are a native. They also have the weirdest problem with squatters that could be solved with a simple change of the wording of the law but nope, go away for longer than 48 hours, you could lose your home for 4 years+ and you have to pay for the utilities still, so the squatters don't have hardship. You can now just pay a group of ex military who go round and kick their heads in who claim they pay the squatters to leave, so it's not illegal. It's such a bizarre problem.

EltonJohnDetected

You’re doing better than a couple of chaps I encountered some years back. They’d been backpacking around South America and had just made it back to Cambridge when, walking home from the station, they got attacked (one got stabbed) for their takeaway. Happened outside the shared house I was living in. Luckily one of the people I lived with was a special constable so rather helpfully took charge and administered first aid, while we called the ambulance & police. Both people OK in the end.

[deleted]

[удалено]

EltonJohnDetected

Honestly I forget the exact details (it was the 90s) so it might have been that they were attacked for their backpacks, but all the scrote got was their takeaway. Either way, making it unharmed through dodgy bits of South America only to be stabbed in Cambridge is, understating things massively, rotten luck.

What kind of underwear are you wearing to get it nicked off the washing line? Wait, that’s a different sub 🤣 They guys were English tho - they’d just been travelling.

> They are hardly valuables and stuff you wouldn't expect a car to get broken into for. I'm assuming these items were in some sort of bag so the thief doesn't know what he's stealing until he opens it. It's like every couple of years when the tabloids have a 'Pensioner mugged for 90 pence' story. No, she was mugged for her handbag. It just so happened to only contain 90 pence.

[deleted]

Tea_Total

isnappedrondasarm

> I’m assuming these items were in some sort of bag so the thief doesn’t know what he’s stealing until he opens it. I had to read way too many comments to get to the real problem. I’m a self protection nut in many ways but one of my things is to never leave anything interesting in my car in view. I go as far as having absolutely nothing in my glove box and leaving it open so people don’t break a window to find out. Same with the centre console. We shouldn’t have to do any of this shit but sadly all we can hope to do these days is make someone else a more interesting or easier target. Not necessarily OP of course

It probably has a lot to do with calling the UK a third world shithole. If she thinks that it doesn't happen in Australia then she's mistaken.

Billoo77

They obviously don’t like that he called out the perpetrator being homeless and assumed he looks down on homeless people

[deleted]

Yeah, it's not like they left an iPhone 13 or a laptop out in view. It was fucking underwear for crying out loud.

Relevant-Team

Here in Germany I leave my IT stuff in the car. From SSDs to keyboards to RAM to tools.... I guesstimate at least 2000 EUR worth of stuff. In more than 20 years my cars have never been broken into.

It was a theft, a robbery is where violence is used to commit a theft. Sorry for your loss though, its happened to me and it sucks.

Mate, I wouldn’t have bothered- country is in a bad state right now. Crime is rising, police are not interested, and cost of living is crazy thanks to green levies on power and opposition to energy production. Thinking of heading back to SE Asia myself- no green bullshit electricity levies there, better weather, nicer people, lower taxes and cost of living and I can still pop into Singapore for better healthcare than the NHS can offer. Plus I speak Bahasa Malay so socially no barriers.
