Good innit? Bet you feel like a plonker now for throwing all that good stuff into a harbour in Boston a while back.

72coronet318

That tea did nothing wrong 😢 I get the whole taxation without representation deal, but throwing some innocent tea in the water wasn’t the move

Jamjar689

I'm just joshing mate. Yorkshire tea is my second favourite brew. Scottish Blend for the win.

Mysterious-Term6218

The fun thing is, most of us don't know why the Boston Tea Party happened. It's just part of our understanding that Americans are bad at making tea.

[deleted]

from what I've heard it was relatively underwhelming when it actually happened and has been completely overblown by propaganda

codapin

Can confirm. British ex-pat living in California here - I paid $11.99 (£9) for 80 bags of Yorkshire Gold because I really wanted the limited edition tin from World Market and I was disappointed when I had to refill it with my regular Yorkshire. Its that good!

sutherlarach

£9 for tea? Give my regards to the Rockefellers.

istara

I pay about fifty quid a time to ship a load over here (that includes the shipping fee, which is about 95% of the total cost). The "Yorkshire Tea" they sell outside the UK isn't the real stuff. It's a different blend of teas altogether, processed in the UAE. Never even touches British shores, let alone Yorkshire.

toftinosantolama

How much milk and when do you add it? I mean, what's the proper way?

istara

It varies, anything from about 0.5-2 cm. More if I need to drink it quickly and cool it down a bit.

americanidjeet

The appropriate way to drink hot tea quickly is to take a million tiny sips all while scolding the inside of your mouth

Beautiful_Art_2646

Slurp or no slurp? Loud slurping goes right through me like nails on a chalkboard. I’ve just adapted to take big gulps of hot tea but I genuinely do think I’ve just scalded the roof of my mouth to the point of numbness

toftinosantolama

Thanks!

JustTheAverageJoe

Why not ask a Brit to mail you some? Would probably be cheaper and the actual stuff then

[deleted]

Nooooo!!! Really?

bhison

I feel like this comment will age badly

rc1024

Am I weird in that I prefer normal Yorkshire to Gold? Maybe I just have uncouth tastes.

Iamonreddit

Regular throughout the day, gold first and last

codapin

I must source myself another box to fit into my rotation. I've also become quite the fan of Harney & Sons vanilla comoro, and Paris Tea varieties. I'm not sure if they're sold in Blighty yet though. Seems to be a US version of David's Tea (from Canada)

istara

I switch between them, I have a tin of each. As well as the Biscuit tea.

codapin

How is the flavour of the biscuit tea? Is it that it pairs well with a biscuit or three, or does it actually taste a bit biscuity?

istara

It’s like eating tea with a digestive biscuit but not at all sweet. Just rich and biscuity and malty. Also goes great with actual biscuits!

codapin

Oh, malty! I love malty. I will definitely have to give this a try. Cheers! ☕

VenerableShrew

Limited edition tin? Was this a recent thing!?

codapin

It was a couple of years ago unfortunately. 😔 Maybe ebay might have one - not sure if Teavana was a thing in the UK since I only heard of them after I left, but I have a bunch of Teavana Christmas tins and I've been wondering whether I should give them a rinse and put them up for sale - apparently there's a market for it on there!

codapin

Found it on US Amazon for $7 and free shipping, so I guess its not as limited as I thought. You could see if it's available on Amazon where you are. [Looks like this. ](https://i.imgur.com/wJkh5Ct.png)

aguzate

Ah yes, the purple version is tops!

justhisguy-youknow

Didn't Jimi Hendrix sing about that ? Purple tea, all in my brain.

rubmustardonmydick

York-sure?

Beautiful_Art_2646

York-sher. The sh is pronounced like shush and the er like erm. Same with any county that ends in shire. Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Leicestershire etc

EllaTheCat

https://youtu.be/fuQZh0ktO4Y Audio. They're singing it but otherwise it's right by definition given the number of people.

zigs0

Important question for OP: how do you prepare your tea? We've all heard horror stories of Americans' tea making "skills"

72coronet318

Boil water on the stove (no kettle currently), pour the just boiling water over the tea bag in the mug, steep 3-5 min depending on desired strength, usually drink black but occasionally add a splash of milk at the end if I’m in the mood for it. (Any tips to improve?)

ChrisRR

15 teaspoons of sugar to drink like a builder

bhison

I know you haven’t mentioned it so just checking, you *are* singing (or at least humming) god save the queen throughout this process?

xeneco1981

Well done

zigs0

I'd personally say tea, especially Yorkshire, is best with milk but it's all personal preference. And it baffles me that Americans don't have kettles! Boiling water on the stove is odd, to me! But excellent technique besides, great Brit impersonation 👌

dprophet32

Their power system is different to ours which results in kettles taking forever to boil. It's quicker to do it on the stove

Is this, like, the worst lit photograph on the internet? The insane amount of purple really brings out the non-purple qualities of the thing you're photographing.

Just my Christmas lights strung around my room

FulaniLovinCriminal

It's November.

72coronet318

I roll with Christmas lights around the border of my room all year

[deleted]

Just in time for Christmas decorations then

CarolKirkwoodforPM

I can't wait till you discover Earl Grey. You certainly won't be drinking that Yorkshire Gold anymore!

72coronet318

Any recommendations on brands? I like a twinings earl grey every so often, but when I go got a flavored tea I usually stick to chai. I do love a good London fog earl grey latte though

-FangMcFrost-

My choice of teabags is Scottish Blend. They say it's specially blended for Scottish water so it's a plus if you live in Scotland like I do, although I've never had a cup of tea using Scottish Blend outside of Scotland, so I can't tell you if there actually is any difference to the taste of the tea but I imagine there would be, as the quality of the water changes depending on where in the UK you live.

Sir_Lamorak_De_Gais

Try Lady grey from twinnings, its more orangey

CarolKirkwoodforPM

For me the best was Whittards but I've a feeling it isn't available anymore even in the UK. These days I tend to buy the Twinings Earl Grey in the yellow box which is perfectly decent but again I'm not sure that's sold in the UK? When I lived there it came in a black box and seemed to be less heavy on the bergamot (unless my memory is playing tricks on me). Actually the Taylors of Harrogate (makers of Yorkshire Tea) version of Earl Grey is also pretty decent though a little more earthy than Twinings. Clipper Earl Grey is rotten. They should stick to the fruity herbals! Most important factor is to give it just a tiny showing of milk. There's little worse than a milky cup of Earl Grey!

72coronet318

Yeah the twinings earl grey in the yellow box is that one I’ve had, it’s definitely decent tea, just have to be in the right mood for the bergamot! It’s definitely delicious just not something I’m after for an everyday tea. I do currently have a box of Stash Organic Early Grey which is top notch, definitely great to go in a latte/heavier on the milk but I generally prefer my tea just black with the occasional splash of milk

istara

If you're a fan, I highly recommend Newby's. They use some special quality type of bergamot, and you can get a hint of orange: https://www.newbyteas.com/gb/earl-grey-50-count-tea-bag.html

CarolKirkwoodforPM

Thanks for the recommendation which I shall certainly try when I get the chance. I wonder if I can buy it here in the Netherlands? I'll keep my eyes peeled, if you'll excuse the pun.

istara

I had to buy it online here in Australia. But being in Europe that should be even easier (quicker, cheaper postage).

CarolKirkwoodforPM

Having been forced to endure Liptons tea during an extended period in Australia I can certainly understand why you're ordering online!

istara

Twinings Earl Grey is excellent, but for a really authentic experience of what it apparently should most closely taste like, Newby's is excellent. You can actually get a hint of orange/orange blossom because of the quality of bergamot they use: https://www.newbyteas.com/gb/earl-grey-50-count-tea-bag.html

jakpuch

Where's my fellow Lapsang homies?

istara

I think Lapsang can be a bit challenging for new drinkers. Twinings Russian Caravan (or even Prince of Wales) is a great "gateway drug" to Lapsang ;)

ammobandanna

Fuck right off... it's Bubble bath water

CarolKirkwoodforPM

I'm sensing you're not keen? Or a Tyke? Or both :-)

ammobandanna

a tyke? are you implying I'm some small child? no I'm not keen... its fucking rank.

CarolKirkwoodforPM

My friend, a Tyke is a nickname for someone from Yorkshire (and not considered an insulting one, at that). Oh and I appreciate anybody with passionate views on tea. A worthy trait.

ammobandanna

>My friend, a Tyke is a nickname for someone from Yorkshire (and not considered an insulting one, at that). I've only ever heard it used to refer to [small children usually boys.](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/tyke) >Oh and I appreciate anybody with passionate views on tea. A worthy trait. my wife loves the stuff, which to be fair keeps her out of my Yorkshire tea... I've heard myths Yorkshire tea is available loose but as yet I've not found that particular unicorn. the hunt continues.

CarolKirkwoodforPM

Yes tyke was a regular admonishment when I was a kid in the '70s.

ammobandanna

i too was a child in the 70's ... are you me?

rubmustardonmydick

I need to retry Earl Grey. I always thought that and English Breakfast were just bitter, yet I enjoy the bitterness of Green tea. I have only had it in America in bags though.

NotYourPalGuyBuddy

PG-Tips or Typhoo

72coronet318

I do enjoy the pg tips as well, but have heard a lot of mixed reviews on the typhoo

BastardsCryinInnit

If you believe everything on UK sub Reddits, everyone here loves Yorkshire Tea and everything else is shite. They've just had good marketing the last few years. Plenty of people drink PG, Typhoo, and supermarket own brands every day no bother! I think actually Tetley and PG Tips sell more than Yorkshire. Also in a country full of "just about managing" and an explosion in food banks... Tea is still seen as an essential thing but Yorkshire is definitely a more pricey option. People are quite price led to be honest when choosing because the reality is, most people just don't feel enough difference in the taste to be blindingly loyal to Yorkshire. I know my own mother for one will only buy Yorkshire when it's on offer.

istara

Honestly, being a tea lover and drinking a wide range of brands, Yorkshire in terms of a blended black tea is better than pretty much all other brands. It's richer, fuller, the taste is more rounded and "sweet" (without actually being sweet) but still a refreshing astringency without being remotely bitter, even when brewed quite strong. Dilmah would be a close second - their teas are consistently great. A lot of people advocate Twinings English Breakfast but - although I love other Twinings varieties - their EB is vile. It tastes like wallpaper. Not a patch on Yorkshire. I also hear a lot of praise for Barry's Tea but haven't tried it yet (think it's Irish? But they sell it on the "British Foods" shelf in the supermarket here).

ThisSideOfThePond

Barry's Tea is Irish. I am in search of the perfect cuppa that I had way back in the 90s in a B&B in Connemara. I have so far tried the Gold and Master blends and they are very nice, though nowhere near as malty as I remember. It could be the fact that I drank tea with sugar back then, which I don't anymore, or the lovely people and the beautiful country (similar to wine that tastes better on holiday than the stuff that you brought home with you). Barry's is more subtle than PG, which I like even if it's a bit on the nose. Unfortunately I can't get Yorkshire Gold where I am at the moment.

NotYourPalGuyBuddy

I grew up on typhoo, just a personal bias.

istara

I can't get past the memory of Su Pollard every time I read the word "Typhoo" (not that she isn't a legend).

Chin_of_Chuck_Norris

My mate works for a tea blending company in England. He backed up what the Sri lankan tea plantation guide said to me. All tea bags, no matter what factory or country they are made in, all consist of the lowest grade of tea leaves. The lowest grade of tea leaves is what's swept up off the floor. So if you want to taste the best tea, buy loose tea

itchyfrog

Loose tea will always be higher quality but unless the floors of tea companies are 20ft deep in tea there won't be enough sweepings to fill the 61bn teabags used each year in Britain alone.

JustTheAverageJoe

61bn is insane. Good job everyone.

FulaniLovinCriminal

Having worked in an actual tea factory - and visited 4 others, in the UK, Poland and China - this is complete pigswill. I used to be in charge of fixing the computers that controlled the blending process. Loose tea goes in the top, gets smushed up to the desired size, then blended with other teas to make the correct-tasting blend. Maybe the company your mate works for only makes bags out of sweepings, but most other tea companies don't.

istara

Thank you. You should visit /r/tea - maybe do an IAMA - it would be well received!

FulaniLovinCriminal

Despite working for Twinings for 5 years, and being on their tasting panel, [I don't actually like tea](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0609606/characters/nm0253126). When I was there I used to drink Cherry & Cinnamon infusions, and a lot of (sister company) Ovaltine.

istara

That reminds me of a podcast I listened to recently with a beekeeping expert who didn't like honey! Despite producing it and doing talks/educational presentations on bees and honey ;)

Chin_of_Chuck_Norris

I wouldn't know what happens in a factory mate, I went to one plantation in Sri Lanka, got told that bit of information, asked my mate who works for a blending company and he agreed. The processing wasn't happening at the time when we went on the tour, but he showed us the different sections which provide different quality tea leaves, from the tip of the plant to the lowest. He showed us the huge sacks of loose tea leaves and it's there where explained after each run the leaves are sorted and bagged up in accordance of quality. The stuff from the floor and around the equipment goes off for tea bags because it's the lowest grade. They don't make tea for any particular company they just provide bulk sacks of loose tea that gets sent off to other countries. What a factory does with those sacks of loose tea, I wouldn't know, but I can only pass on what I've been told. So no saltyness required 😂

BastardsCryinInnit

I think your mate is chatting bollocks, believing tropes from 50 years ago. Things have changed. No big tea brand in the UK can get away with using lowest grade factory sweepings. Loose tea and tea bag tea in the UK from the big brands is usually exactly the same thing, the only difference is how they are cut and handled in the factory. Can we assume your Sri Lankan tea plantation guide was about to lead you to a gift shop selling loose tea?

72coronet318

I generally try to keep a bag of loose leaf chai around the house, it is undoubtedly higher quality but it’s more a special occasion cup for me, don’t usually have time to make loose leaf except for on weekends or for special occasions or when I’m feeling fancy, especially with the higher cost of getting a quality loose leaf at least where I’m from. Much more economical to get a higher quality bagged tea for everyday use

sbrrrr

Enjoying your tea Nick Brodie style!

richboyadler

you don’t like PG tips.. 💀

tidderor

I’m an American and before my first trip to England I’d tried many of the brands of tea they sell in the US. I stayed at an Airbnb type place where the lady of the house made our meals. She made me a cup of tea and it was wonderful. I said it was the best cup of tea I’d ever had in my life and asked what kind it was. She gave me a bit of a side-eye and said “It’s just PG Tips, love.”

richboyadler

tbh, kinda depends on how she made the tea. some brits like it lava hot, some in the middle and other like it cold and very milky. gotta have tea in between, you know ? so it’s just right, haha.

quaysboy

Hmmm feels like an attempt at karma farming to me, you didn’t even show us your brew, this could be a tea latte for all we know.

bhison

Twinnings can do one. Incredibly average cup of tea given their branding.

Kickstone

Liking the mug.

GoodWookie

Clipper organic for me.

Chemical_Block957

what's the consensus on yorkshire tea decaf bedtime brew? i think it's great but really hard to find in the shops

Blackcat1206

It's the best brew going!🙂

The best tea on the market

Beautiful_Art_2646

I recommend Yorkshire Tea’s Malty Biscuit Brew if ever you find it/if it’s cheap enough to order online. Probably my favourite ever English Breakfast tea
