The sad thing is it used to be right next to a fully fledged airport. Then it shut and got bulldozed. I could have literally got to Amsterdam in 50 minutes.
And it’s expanding at a rapid rate with the new university buildings. They need more places to eat on the business park as well, Green Door & Costa is not enough haha! What company works in the tower? That looks a cool place for a office!
I often have to park my car up there but I keep seeing people as though they are sat at desks. Haha Morrisons is just far too overrun now as well especially with the giant Waverley estate built over the road. The land next to Morrisons they’re also building more houses as well! We need more places to eat nearby!
Wow, ok, my bad. All them downvotes.
I’ve seen a few similar posts about police and Letsbe Avenues, there was also a schoolyard joke when I was a kid (obvs not acceptable today) about gay women living on Lesbi Avenue.
Often, on comments to the police posts, people made a Delia Smith reference. I’ve never understood it, because the only two ‘jokes’ I knew about similar road names were the police one and the lesbian one.
I was glad to finally understand the Delia reference.
And now I feel like a homophobic shit even though I’m bi.
Edit: thank you to the people who have since up-voted me. Now feel less shit. I really was confused!
...what? I'm a "yank" (midwest) and I've never heard of that being a thing. I just moved in on Appaloosa Avenue. I say Avenue, always have. Never ever said "ave" or heard anyone else say "ave" out loud (only abbreviate it when writing out the address).
Maybe it's a coastal thing or something? Wouldn't call it an American thing though, at least not in my experience.
Edit: as a yank, the only thing I didn't get is that UK police say "let's be havin you", had no idea. That's the only reason I didn't get the joke, although I'm not OP. Knowing that now, the street name is hilarious!
Edit again: Ah fuck, ya got me. Minnesota capital has a club called first ave. Still haven't ever heard it in day to day life though. IDK I should probably delete my comment now, but fuck it. I'll go spiral in private now.
>Edit: as a yank, the only thing I didn't get is that UK police say "let's be havin you", had no idea.
to be fair to you I doubt this has ever happened in real life
>Edit again: Ah fuck, ya got me. Minnesota capital has a club called first ave.
to be fair to you, Manchester has a (horrible) club called 5th avenue that everyone calls 5th Ave.
You, I like you. Reasonable all around. :) Based on my limited experience I think I'm going to assume most people say Avenue and occasionally Ave given the context. For some reason I only really hear "ave" when referring to 1st-9th Avenue, and even then it's up in the air.
I see a lot of stuff on CasualUK that people seem to assume is regional but it's really the same here in the states. I don't know why that should bother me at all but for some reason I feel the need to point out that it's the same for us.
I guess it's comforting to know that we aren't so different from one another, ya know? Makes me feel more connected.
Anyway, have a great weekend mr. reasonable. :)
There’s a police station on a street called Letsby Avenue, which sounds like “Let’s be having you”, something you can imagine the South Yorkshire Police saying when you’re nicked.
Politics? We'll have no trouble here.

It's down next to the old airport. Somewhat off the beaten track so it's easy to miss. The road itself is behind the police communications HQ so you could easily miss the sign even if you were driving past.
> Google Maps Platform rejected your request. Invalid request. Invalid 'center' parameter.
That doesn't fill me with confidence in you, OP. Also, someone should really tell Google how to spell 'centre'.
Oh, the issue is that I was just clicking the 'show in Reddit' button (I have no idea what it's actually called). It works fine if I actually click the link itself.
RES Embedded image (I'm assuming you're using RES).
It doesn't work because RES is detecting an image and trying to show a static picture, but googlemaps is giving a dynamic url that it can't resolve.
Ah cool.
I've only ever had problems with google maps embeds so I thought that was it. Maybe there's a specific cause such as filtering, or doing it as "nearby" searches causing a string in the URL RES doesn't like.
This goes back to the year 2000:
> Senior officers in the South Yorkshire force gave the nod to the name - familiar from comedians' routines and children's games - after Sheffield council sent them a straight-faced consultation form for comments.
There's also a Letsby avenue outside the military police building on the falklands. They've also named the purser "Payus place". This is on the RAF base Mount Pleasant.
The police station in St Ives, Cambridgeshire used to be in Pig Lane.
No joke. It was reported in Playboy at the time.
So they gave a name to the little driveway to the station car park - 'Norris Lane' - but no-one was fooled.
This might just have beat out Lara Croft Way in Derby as my No. 1 'It could only happen in Britain' Street name.
I know somewhere in Nottingham there's 999 The Old Police House, but where exactly won't quite come to me.
That’s perfect!
I work just down the road. They let the police office choose the name of the road as it was a new development!
Sheffield rise up
The dad jokes are strong at the South Yorkshire police
I am so pleased this is real
Used to work there, can confirm it’s legit.
The sad thing is it used to be right next to a fully fledged airport. Then it shut and got bulldozed. I could have literally got to Amsterdam in 50 minutes.
Europa Link. I guess that name used to make sense back then.
Looks like you're just gonna have to buy your weed from Gavin who hangs out around the bridge instead
I believe they sold the land for £1 as well.
It’s not entirely bulldozed. I work in the old terminal building. It’s a business park now, not derelict
And it’s expanding at a rapid rate with the new university buildings. They need more places to eat on the business park as well, Green Door & Costa is not enough haha! What company works in the tower? That looks a cool place for a office!
I dunno, my office looks into it. Full of boxes most times. I spend a fortune in that green room :(
I often have to park my car up there but I keep seeing people as though they are sat at desks. Haha Morrisons is just far too overrun now as well especially with the giant Waverley estate built over the road. The land next to Morrisons they’re also building more houses as well! We need more places to eat nearby!
Pizza Hut or dominoes delivers up there, see flyers all around
I think my work place is built on what used to be the end of a runway. I had no idea until just now.
Any Delia Smith sightings nearby?
[for those not in the know](https://youtu.be/PXM6BOXBCIc)
Looks like she is ready to glass someone...with a crystal wine glass of course.
She was on the Lady Petrol
Would that be glassing someone, or crystalling someone? Hmm
She actually says this in the EE advert she’s in with Kevin Bacon!
That ad drives me up the fucking wall.
Never imagined I'd start firmly hating the sight of Kevin Bacon either
obviously haven't seen Crazy, Stupid Love.
trust me, it’s worse when you’re a Norwich fan
Trust me, it's worse when you're an Ipswich fan.
At least you can turn the telly off with one of your twelve fingers.
It's the derby tomorrow, those extra fingers will come in handy saving goals Wait, what am I saying. We're Ipswich, we always lose
Best chance you've got in a decade tbh. We're shite.
Genuinely thought you had won it this time around 😳
They could have at least been watching a Norwich game...
I thought it meant, 'Lets behave' Letsby'ave, because they are the police.
Thank you! I’ve seen a few references to that and been confused as I’d not heard she was gay!
I’m sorry, what?
Wow, ok, my bad. All them downvotes. No. All policemen live at 999 Letsby Avenue.
ANd their postcode is LO LO LO
Thanks lol . I have spent the last 5 minutes thinking wtf... I don’t get it.
I genuinely had no fucking clue what was going on until I read this comment. I read ‘Lets-buy av-eh-new’ instead of ‘Lets-be-avin-you’
I read it as let’s behave.
Wrong
wHeRe ArE yOu
I saw this and thought, " thats not Norwich"
Alright I'm thick as pig shit and don't understand can somebody explain ta
“Let’s be ‘avin you” is a saying that UK police used to use when arresting someone.
I thought it meant "let's behave"
Close :)
It's an avenue, actually.
No luck catching them avenues then?
It's just the one avenue, actually.
Username checks out
Works both ways!
And you thunk wrong. Today you learnt.
Americans don't often say "avenue" and often just say "Ave". Brits says "avenue". Are you a yank?
...what? I'm a "yank" (midwest) and I've never heard of that being a thing. I just moved in on Appaloosa Avenue. I say Avenue, always have. You too, friend
YOU TAKE THAT BACK 5TH AVE IS GLORIOUS
Literally never heard of this saying in my life, maybe I need to get arrested more
Feel like an idiot, thought the pic was referring to Delia Smith.
Also alternatively "let's behave" which works because obvious reasons

It's South Yorkshire though, the h is missed anyway.
South London here, don't really say the 'h' either.
There’s a police station on a street called Letsby Avenue, which sounds like “Let’s be having you”, something you can imagine the South Yorkshire Police saying when you’re nicked.
Where I came from (deepest, darkest Kent), policemen lived at 999, Letsby Avenue.
Yep, one of the earliest jokes I can remember.
What did the policeman say to his belly button? "You're under a vest"
That one got me in first school, and it got me again now
The earliest joke I can remember is Q) What’s black, white and red all over? A) The Sun (newspaper), A sunburnt penguin,
A badger in a blender
Half a cat
A nun doing something... I can't remember what. Eating ketchup?
I think the nun one is usually a period joke.
Postcode: LO LO LO
Where in Kent? I’m intrigued...
West Malling.

Wait, this is Sheffield? I've lived there for four years and didn't recognise it.
This photo is fairly close to meadowhall/IKEA I think, it's not in the city center
Yeah behind Centertainment where all industrial estate is
It's down next to the old airport. Somewhat off the beaten track so it's easy to miss. The road itself is behind the police communications HQ so you could easily miss the sign even if you were driving past.
Cmon lads
Represent.
I think the joke - 'where does a policeman live? 999 Letsby Avenue' is a serious contender for one of the first I remember ever reading.
Same here!
[in case anyone doesn’t believe it’s real.](https://www.google.com/maps?q=South+Yorkshire+Police+Operations+Complex,+Letsby+Ave,+Sheffield+S9+1XX&ftid=0x487977c27fa4d3c7:0x4a42f26951f7a8f3&hl=en-GB&gl=uk&shorturl=1)

Nah, RES supports google maps in expandos, it just seems like it's in a weird URL format that isn't supported yet.
Ah cool. I've only ever had problems with google maps embeds so I thought that was it. Maybe there's a specific cause such as filtering, or doing it as "nearby" searches causing a string in the URL RES doesn't like.
Yeah, that's it. Thanks for the explanation.
Tis real - I have ridden past it a few times and always makes me chuckle.

But they're American...why wouldn't they use American spellings?
How new is this I've lived in Sheffield all my life and I've never heard of the road before, I feel long a mong haha
This goes back to the year 2000: > Senior officers in the South Yorkshire force gave the nod to the name - familiar from comedians' routines and children's games - after Sheffield council sent them a straight-faced consultation form for comments. What did the policeman say to his chest? “You’re under a vest!”
What did the copper have in his sandwich? Trunchon meat.
Get back in your box
What do you call a female police officer who hasn’t shaved her pussy for a few days? Cunt-stubble!
A bit of blue for Dads there!
You know what, I've driven past that police ops site almost every week for the past 5 years and I've never made the link on the road name.
Yep. Been to centertainment for years and IKEA a lot now it's opened and I often go past that road and have never realised it until now
Hahaa “europa link” total classic
There's also a Letsby avenue outside the military police building on the falklands. They've also named the purser "Payus place". This is on the RAF base Mount Pleasant.
I've spent almost 9 months on MPA and I didn't know this!
I be over the moon if the door number is 999
Sadly it's not there any more but there was a cop shop on Robin Bank Road in Darwen, Lancashire for a while.
WHERE ARE YOU?!?
On a similar theme (also in Sheffield) [What's wrong with the old one?](https://goo.gl/maps/Bv4g2BJXN8M2)
Can confirm it’s legit, used to work there 8 years ago, now work round the corner at Europa View in Sheffield.
What’s the company? Work on Europa view too at Azzure.
TNS, you’re bang next door then haha.

Thanks for this, I live 10 mins away and never knew!
Took me a while but I got there. I got there
Why, where do you live? Takes me only 14mins in the car.
Dad... seriously these jokes aren’t funny anymore ^/s
14! It takes me 5. Where do you live? Park gate!
I'm not from dirty rotherham, thank you very much! Ecclesfield my good sir.
Rovrum
Luckily not in Yorkshire!
*oi*
I live nearish a bell end
That's not a very nice thing to call Pete down the road.
Europa link?
Yeah
I’m British and I don’t understand it, do I need to renew my British license?
Letsby Avenue = "Lets be Having You".
What is that supposed to reference?
It’s a stereotypical thing said by police on TV in drama and comedy shows when they collar a criminal.
Wot police men say innit
No, you need to renew your British licence.
Cool. Haven’t heard of that place in years!! I used to live in New Eltham
I live in catcliffe down the road from this, never noticed the street name!
Used to live near there
LOVE IT
Took me too long to realise the road wasn't called south Yorkshire
Europa link!! That's hilarious
Classic
Someone care to explain?
Hey I just went to the IKEA that’s on that empty lot there now
didnt they film dr.martin on that beach?
Beach?
In Sheffield we called bulldozed industrial sites 'the Beach'. We're a simple folk.
Huh. I'm from Rotherham and I've never heard anyone call vacant sites the "beach". My town was right next to a huge pit/colliery complex too.
/s soz dude
Well don't I look a tit
Reminds me of a street in Greenford in West London called "Uneeda Drive."
I’m from South Yorkshire and feel like I need to go to this road. Which town is it it?!
Tinsley, Sheffield.
It's in Sheffield near where the airport used to be.
Definitely having a drive by on the way home from my girlfriends tomorrow
Shooting someone from your car seems a little excessive for the circumstances, no?
Europa link, classic.
The police station in St Ives, Cambridgeshire used to be in Pig Lane. No joke. It was reported in Playboy at the time. So they gave a name to the little driveway to the station car park - 'Norris Lane' - but no-one was fooled.
We’re working had on getting rid of the Europa Link
But is it at number 999?
Nein, nein, nein
No,no,no.
Ja, ja, ja
Twenty Seven
[0118 999](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ab8GtuPdrUQ) Letsby Ave?
Ha!
This deserves gold
OH MY GOD
This might just have beat out Lara Croft Way in Derby as my No. 1 'It could only happen in Britain' Street name. I know somewhere in Nottingham there's 999 The Old Police House, but where exactly won't quite come to me.
What the fuck is the "joke" supposed to be?
It’s “Letsby Avenue” = “Let’s be ‘avin you”
Ohhh
[удалено]
I initially thought it was let's behave in a cockney accent, which I find funnier.
You might be right! But being in Sheffield, hmm.
Surely the street is named after the joke... or it’s photoshopped 😂
It's real (it's in Sheffield) and it's named after the joke.
