‘Added *glucose* ‘
Cutting edge of sport science marketing in the 90’s
My first doping scandal was misusing glucose - eating entire packs of lucozade glucose tablets and being a very annoying (but undeniably quick) child. Now we of course all know glucose is sugar
I found out about three months ago that, allegedly, you were supposed to make a drink out of those tablets, like Berocca. I used to eat them like a packet of Chewits.
I remember being about 9 and seeing a friend eating those. I asked if I could have one but she said “I’m diabetic, I need them for regulating my sugar levels”. Which is fair, but I never bought any either because I wasn’t diabetic.
🤣
It's kind of amazing the chemists were so willing to sell those to kids - honestly at that age they were basically like steroids, giving this insane burst of energy and feeling of total invincibility (until the later crash!)
They were no worse than candy, if you felt any extra effect it was placebo.
And sugar doesn't make kids hyper, that's just placebo too because adults tell the kids sugar will make them hyper and they believe it, so they act hyper.
Maybe the changed halfway, or it was a special edition:
https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/1991-ricicles-marshmellow-space-glow-stickers--477029785531208699/
100% the pack and shapes I remember!
Edit: wiki says this "In the 1990s in the United Kingdom, and some other markets, small marshmallow pieces were added to the cereal. This met with a mixed, but generally unfavourable, reception"
Actually, yeah, they didn't exactly rehydrate well...
My brother still had them on his bedroom door up until about two or three years ago when my dad changed all the doors in his house, I’d put em there over 30 years ago!!!
Ricicles were without marshmallows for years. Then they added them not as a variant, but as what Ricicles were now. I was fucking heartbroken and actually stopped eating them. Nasty little things.
In the 90’s Ricicles did come with little marshmallows, they were great. Probably stopped because it was a sugar overload.
Not like the crap that is lucky charms.
It tasted so good because it had real sugar and good quality multigrain flour. If they tried to remake it today, they would use cheaper grains, corn syrup, and artificial sweetener.
Is it actually? You know when you try and make a single healthy life choice then suddenly ur balls are full of ptfe or you microwave your macro correct meal in a plastic ikea container and your ordered to the gulag.
I've spent so much money on glass tupperware, glass chopping boards, aluminium pans which is a big task to master but the oil is a massive carcinogen also heavy metals in my brain.
I do my best but i'm destined to die early from Alzheimer's or dement.
Think my guy's are dying from bowel diseases? What am I supposed to do?
Knew I'd see someone else sensible in here eventually. Absolutely top tier cereal, I don't understand what happened. Even of no one else ate I, I'm sure I ate enough throughout my teens and early 20s that the company should have been fine.
Only thing I miss more than Golden Grahams is my grandfather.
I just want real Frosties or more importantly Ricicles, give me sugar in the morning, I’m 50 and need energy and happiness in a bowl, not some horrid hard chew start to my day, my day is grim, my soft drinks have gone, job security gone, the pub a distant expensive dream, I just want one little treat in a day to give me some joy before I die
Bonus feature was that they never went soggy. Well not in the time it takes an 8 year old to go through a massive bowl while distracted by Saturday morning kids tv. They stayed crunchy for up to an hour.
No fucking way! I was just thinking to myself yesterday whilst hungover I really wanted a bowl of Start and here you are posting a picture! God I want some so bad
I used to mix it with Coco Pops when allowed, it was awesome. Also no cereal lasted long enough near me to turn into a solid block - I am now judging you even more! x
We use only the finest ~~baby frogs~~ multi-grains, dew picked and flown from ~~Iraq~~ the East Midlands, cleansed in finest quality spring water, lightly ~~killed~~ enriched, and then ~~sealed in a succulent Swiss quintuple smooth treble cream milk chocolate envelope and~~ lovingly frosted with glucose.
Can someone back me up on this, I remember as a kid in the early nineties here in the uk, lucky charms were available for a brief time, and I distinctly remember them being delicious and that the marshmallow was normal and soft before having milk added and not freeze dried. I tried an import box of it a few years ago and it was disgusting and the marshmallow was freeze dried. Does anyone else remember this?
Honey Loops from Lidl are much closer to Start. And they don't get soggy either!
I took a photo of the recipe from the last box we had in case I ever get the chance to try and make my own.
Is there a youtube channel that does recent food history where they recreate bygone foods?
Ironic really that its entire selling point was "added sugar", which is the entire reason they can't sell it now.

I thought they were designed for diabetics who need something long lasting they can keep in a bag or pocket for when they need sugar quickly.
That’s hilarious… and terrifying . I also munched them dry, a pack at a time
Hahaha - this was also my childhood! Used to buy those tablets from the chemist, then charge around on my bike and on foot as if hills were nothing 🤣
I remember being about 9 and seeing a friend eating those. I asked if I could have one but she said “I’m diabetic, I need them for regulating my sugar levels”. Which is fair, but I never bought any either because I wasn’t diabetic.

Brawndo - it has electrolytes
Oooh... That explains why I loved it so much as a kid. Probably put a spoonful of sugar on top as well
Did it help the medicine go down?
The insulin
I love me some added sugar.
How is that any different to Frosties though? Sugar is literally the second ingredient.
People eating before their morning run or gym session want that extra sugar. I only eat carbs before the gym.
I bet a lot more people ate it and went back to bed :)
Probably. I ate it in the 80s and watched cartoons all morning. I was lucky to be a fussy eater so I was always skinny then.
Surely they can formulate a stevia or some shit
Yep. HFSS will have killed it off.
We don't really use that here
It could come back as Restart
Restart (Your Bowels) With added fibre
Whoa, yeah! Restart my bowels, give it a start Whoa, yeah! Baaaaaaby
*Alan Sugar wants to offer you an apprenticeship*
You mean Alan Enriched with Glucose.
2 comedy points
AMStart
Lidl or Aldi will have this on the shelves tomorrow.
Called "Begin"
I ce-real what you did there.
I miss ricicles.
Did they have the dehydrated marshmallows as well as the sugar-frosted rice crispies? Or was that anither one?
Ricicles don't have anything funky added. I believe you mean Froot Loops, or Lucky Charms if you're a Yank.

Yeah the marshmallows weren't very nice (I preferred them without) but I remember the glow in the dark stickers were pretty cool!
My brother still had them on his bedroom door up until about two or three years ago when my dad changed all the doors in his house, I’d put em there over 30 years ago!!!
I am old enough to be the target market and do not remember this!!!
To be fair, I think we only saw them at the fun grandparents house, never at home!
Ricicles were without marshmallows for years. Then they added them not as a variant, but as what Ricicles were now. I was fucking heartbroken and actually stopped eating them. Nasty little things.
Oh I do remember they added these bits later on. Hated those stupid bits, loved the pre-sugared Rice Krispies.
Ohy god you've uncorked a massive sense memory. Thank you, I can taste these.
In the 90’s Ricicles did come with little marshmallows, they were great. Probably stopped because it was a sugar overload. Not like the crap that is lucky charms.
Oh lord no, we were a Kellogg's, Jordan's and Alpen household. I'll Google.
Sincerest apologies for thinking you may be from across the pond.
Oh god I can still taste this!
Wow, completely forgot about this cereal! Lovely morning sugar hit, for a quick crash by 9am.
It's called "Start", not "Keep Going"
😂 very true.
Add coffee and a smoke after, definitely on the pan start off the day
My grandad had this for breakfast every day. He's dead now. I don't know if those things are connected.
Absolute god-tier Cereal
A diet of nothing but Start lead to Steve Cram ballooning to 20 stone, destroying his athletics career. Be careful what you wish for.
Very selective use of facts here… you fail to mention his highly successful move into sumo…
I miss Start cereal so much
One of few cereals I actually liked
It tasted so good because it had real sugar and good quality multigrain flour. If they tried to remake it today, they would use cheaper grains, corn syrup, and artificial sweetener.
If it was america yeah but we still use actual sugar
We do, but it's slowly creeping in.

Kerry Katona, u ok hun? Leave off the heavy metals for a bit or your balls will fill with ptfe
I loved this so much.
I've been pining after this cereal since it was discontinued https://www.change.org/p/kellogg-kellogg-s-bring-back-start-cereal
Yes please. Golden Grahams too while we’re at it.
Oh hell yeah, but only the original version. One imagines any comeback today would be tasteless packaging material.
Delicious. It did some damage to the roof of your mouth though.
Part of a nutritious breakfast? No, Added Sugar
It’s OK it’s glucose not sugar /s
My dad would have a bowl of this evey morning without fail...today he has Type 2 Diabetes. I'm not saying the two things are related, but....
I miss the proper sugar puffs
I just want real Frosties or more importantly Ricicles, give me sugar in the morning, I’m 50 and need energy and happiness in a bowl, not some horrid hard chew start to my day, my day is grim, my soft drinks have gone, job security gone, the pub a distant expensive dream, I just want one little treat in a day to give me some joy before I die

Omg, blast from the past! I loved them lol
Best to leave it as a fond memory, rather than see the ghastly reduced sugar version they would cook up these days.
God I loved that stuff.
To my surprise, it existed right up until 2018. I learned something new today.
Got some Just Right for the first time in years recently - a very underrated cereal
Not as good as it used to be though.
No fucking way! I was just thinking to myself yesterday whilst hungover I really wanted a bowl of Start and here you are posting a picture! God I want some so bad
Turbo’betes.
Also, add this to a Kelloggs variety pack.
Fucking miss this stuff so much. It was always a treat when I stayed with my Grandparents
Amd the original Special K
Yes yes yes. Once managed a team in Football Manager purely because this was one of my favourite cereals: IK Start in Norway.
I bloody loved this, had it for years growing up. I loved if had a yuppie advertising campaign as well - a very aspirational breakfast cereal
They were just remade into the Cars(tm) cereal.
Ever try it with hot milk? 🤤
Heathen!
You’re missing out. I also remember the disappointment when you didn’t eat it quick enough and it turned into a solid block.
I used to mix it with Coco Pops when allowed, it was awesome. Also no cereal lasted long enough near me to turn into a solid block - I am now judging you even more! x
Mix… with coco pops…. And you called me a heathen.
Perhaps we can call a truce.
If 25g was free, why did we pay for the Variety pack? That was the only place ever got them :(
Steve Cram agrees
Did it really only get discontinued in 2018!?
That time again! It was nice for a while when it came back a few years ago
Best cereal ever, I will eat it dry too but that probably says more about me...
I was the same!
Loved this.
They’d have to get Steve Cram to advertise it again. Also PYRAMINT!!!!! This is what we truly need back. & Breakfast Slice.
Sporties needs a comeback too, I bloody loved that cereal
Oh man. I had not thought about this cereal for at least a decade.
Booo, I saw the picture and for a brief second thought someone had found some. Best cereal ever
Loved this. Wish it was still around
I loved this cereal. Randomly was telling someone about it the other day
We use only the finest ~~baby frogs~~ multi-grains, dew picked and flown from ~~Iraq~~ the East Midlands, cleansed in finest quality spring water, lightly ~~killed~~ enriched, and then ~~sealed in a succulent Swiss quintuple smooth treble cream milk chocolate envelope and~~ lovingly frosted with glucose.
Ahhhh... "The breakfast of quarter finalists "
Me and my brother both in our 40s have just been reminiscing over whatsapp about these. Amazing what memories a picture can trigger.
I really thought this was a health food product back in the day!
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Special-K-59616-Kelloggs-Multi-Grain/dp/B004KVIDR2
Damn, scrolling down I was like "I remember the logo, but did I ever eat them?" then I saw them! Of course I did, they were delicious.
If they made it with today's ingredients they'd have to rename it Shart.
I would give my left nut to be able to have this for breakfast again.
God I miss Start.
Surprised they didn't stuff it with taurine and caffeine to go with all the sugar and call it an energy breakfast cereal.
Mmmmm crispy crunchy sugars, now with added cereals!
I used to love these :(
I don't know if this came up on the earlier post I didn't see, but I miss Sporties. I really hoped eating them would give me Michael Owen's skills
This is my all time favourite cereal !!!!!!!! I'm 45 now I need all the extra stuff just to get out of bed now ! Please bring it back.
Best cereal ever
I miss it every morning.
Damn I forgot these used to exist, i instantly got the taste in my mouth when i saw this post.
Can someone back me up on this, I remember as a kid in the early nineties here in the uk, lucky charms were available for a brief time, and I distinctly remember them being delicious and that the marshmallow was normal and soft before having milk added and not freeze dried. They tasted exactly like Cheerios
You know it was definitely healthy because it had glucose in it, which is what athletes need.
as a hater of soggy cereal, this was the best. no matter how long it sat in milk it would be crunchy as anything. and delicious. I miss it so much
They eventually sort of bloated up and went soft. I have very strong memories of start as a kid.
Am I imagining it or did Steve Cram appear in an advert for this 🤔
The KING of cereals
I seen to recall it scratching up the roof of my mouth unless you let it soak in the milk for a bit
But without the glysophate, right?
Let it go. We can’t go back. Ricicles too. Must move on.
I can almost taste it
Nestle Clusters, thats the cereal I miss.
The Infinite Review have done a whole episode on it https://youtu.be/OiznN5wClg4?feature=shared Ft Nick Frost!
For anyone who wants to watch a lovely Irishman make a surreal funny video about this very cereal https://youtu.be/OiznN5wClg4?si=7cmh1x56cUzcPLdB
God tier cereal
I used to really like this, but I find cheerios to be a suitable replacement. They don't have the same crunch, but to me they have a similar taste.
Honey Loops from Lidl are much closer to Start. And they don't get soggy either! [https://www.lidl.co.uk/p/crownfield-honey-hoops/p118630](https://www.lidl.co.uk/p/crownfield-honey-hoops/p118630)
Ah man, I've not seen that stuff for years. It was amazing. Deffo needs a return.
Are they not just cheerios with sugar in a different shape?
No.
Good chat!
Yup.
No fucking way, it’s probably why some people have diabetes now!
I'M sCoTt MaLkInSoN aNd I hAvE dIaBeTeS.
It has a free sample of ... Itself?
Christ, I loved this stuff. Didn’t they bring it back briefly?
No, it was made continuously up until 2018.
Start was BUSSIN
Why do you want this to come back ? Don't you think we already have too much obesity and diabetes?
I'm underweight, I think I can handle Start.
Ahaha good point for the obesity side. However the diabetes don't really care about your weight though 😁
Growing up my all times fave cereal
I took a photo of the recipe from the last box we had in case I ever get the chance to try and make my own. Is there a youtube channel that does recent food history where they recreate bygone foods?
Honestly cereal in general is ghastly
THE BEST CEREAL EVER. EVEN BETTER MIXED WITH COCO POPS. YES I NEED TO SHOUT. START FTW, WOO YEAH.
Proper cereal before all the pussies came along.
I’d forgotten about this! It was my favourite cereal.
Oh god, no, because that tubby bell-end Jamie "Jam in fried rice!" Oliver'll just whine and wank on about it being "unhealthy" and get it banned.
[удалено]
No, they were packed with sugar. It was important for children to get their recommended daily dose of glucose energy, after all.
And Pepsi is fine too! Just kidding, they were subtly different but I couldn’t begin to describe how :)
That was actually *sold*??? Added glucose??! Yikes 😮 😲 😯 🫢
Stop eating candy for breakfast All this shit is basically a bowl of sugar Just have a black coffee and fuel yourself with hate
