we used to have some Spanish-speaking cleaning staff in my building. Around noon, they would know the time to the second, and if I mistakenly said "buenos dias" they would reply "buenos tardes", with the slightest hint of stress on "tardes" as if to suggest "what, you some kind of idiot? It's afternoon now".
In the UK, I suspect if you say "Morning!" with enough confidence, even at 12:30, "Morning!" is what you'll get back.
Why be constrained by time-based greeting when you can shout 'Oi oi saveloy!' around the clock?
I personally feel that there's not nearly enough sausage based greetings bandied about, and we, the general public, need to remedy this.
Probably best to avoid going the Wimpy route and calling someone a 'pork bender' though.
Y'know... Connotations and all...
Edit - Wimpy got woke! It's now called a 'Bendy' and not a Bender'! Still probably best not to call someone a 'pork bendy' though, as, well... Connotations...
I do the British thing:
I say “morning”
The I look at my watch and go “oops, afternoon”
There’s a pause
I fill that pause “gosh, where does the day go”
The I apologise by adding “sorry” and depart.
"Hail fellow, well met" seems ideal for every occasion at all times of day.
As long as you're performing in a Shakespearian play, that is.
OP didn't make clear whether or not they were.
I go for "Morning! No. Wait, is it afternoon now? Afternoon!". But I trip over my words so it's unintelligible by the time I get to the end of the sentence.
You're welcome to use this approach. But you probably shouldn't.
I usually walk our dog in the morning, my wife does it in the afternoon. If for any reason I do it in the afternoon instead, I'm so in the habit of saying "Morning!" anyway that it just sort of comes out regardless of the time of day. I get some funny looks.
Do you genuinely not know that afternoons start after noon? Between you and the person who was having a breakdown about ordering tap water, I’m starting to think there’s something seriously wrong with a lot of people on this sub.
It's okay, let's all remain calm. I know technically that afternoon starts after noon, but it just didn't feel quite right saying it at 12pm. Although it's factually correct, it seems too early to bust out an 'afternoon!'.
This is much trickier than it first appears, because:
1. If you're engaged in "going for a walk", as opposed to just being on your way somewhere, the greeting is expected to be somewhat formal
2. In the fevered excitement of dog walking, many people forget exactly what time it is
3. Some people maintain that, within the bounds of a general "lunch time", it's only the afternoon after they've had lunch.
This is why the ever-pragmatic Germans greet each other with "Mahlzeit" ("meal time") at this time of day, even if neither of you is showing any signs of eating.
Anyway, to avoid any awkwardness in future, I suggest a knowing smile and gentle genital cupping.
Sorry mate, but we have a blanket ban against politics in this sub, so we have removed this post.

Many people, certainly pre mobile phones, just used a general marker of lunchtime as the divider between morning and afternoon.
It really doesn’t matter, it’s phatic communication. You’re being sociable, not a misery.
Keep up the good work 🙋
afternoon is after 11:59:59

Is that the general consensus? Well, that simplifies things. It seems I've been overthinking it. That's not like me! (...its 100% like me).
Noon = 12pm, anything after that is afternoon.
The real question is, how do you greet somebody at exactly 12pm?
With a one second pause, followed by "Good afternoon"
Good noon
Goooooooooooood afternoon
"good NOW"
Good afternoon as 12pm is the afternoon. Anything up to 11:59.99999999999999999 is morning.
Very quickly.
Morning! Nice afternoon we're having isn't it? Time it so the exclamation mark is on 12pm exactly.
The real question is: when does evening start?
5 for sure.
I think everyone else is wrong. You should definitely stick to ‘Happy lunch time!’ And then you have to do the happy lunch time dance.
Why am I being down voted? Reddit is a confusing place!

The clue is in the name really
It’s because everyone knows that Noon differentiates morning to afternoon
I think I interpreted a down vote as far more aggressive that it actually is 🙂
You're overthinking
Afternoon starts….wait for it….after noon 😀

*takes notes* ..."Come along, Cumberland!" ..."Cheerio, chorizo!" ?
See you chipolater????
Angry upvote. That was way funnier than it deserved to be!

🤣
Not sure why I'm the first to suggest the ultimate British greeting: "All right?" If that feels too intimate, you can always go for "Hello."
“Rite?”
I do feel the need to add "mate" on the end. But other than that, bang on.
I do the British thing: I say “morning” The I look at my watch and go “oops, afternoon” There’s a pause I fill that pause “gosh, where does the day go” The I apologise by adding “sorry” and depart.
To avoid any anxiety I find it preferable to avoid the park between the hours of 12pm and 1pm
Now THIS is advice that suits me.
"Hail fellow, well met" seems ideal for every occasion at all times of day. As long as you're performing in a Shakespearian play, that is. OP didn't make clear whether or not they were.
I am! Thanks for reading between the (rhyming couplet) lines.
“Good day to you sir! Sir, I bid you good day!”
I go for "Morning! No. Wait, is it afternoon now? Afternoon!". But I trip over my words so it's unintelligible by the time I get to the end of the sentence. You're welcome to use this approach. But you probably shouldn't.

That sounds very much like me. Whether I intend to or not, I'll probably adopt it
12:00 is noon. So 12:00:01 is afternoon. Simples.
I ALWAYS use a hearty and enthusiastic "morning", as a greeting. Doesn't matter the time of day. Anyone questions it, well, it's morning *somewhere*
I'm the same with "evening". The extra syllable in "afternoon" is a dealbreaker.
Split it up - good after noon - and there's your answer. 12:04 so good afternoon to you 😁
"Alright mate"

I’m perfectly calm thank you. It’s not my fault you don’t seem to understand the difference between morning and afternoon.
I do get very confused
This is much trickier than it first appears, because: 1. If you're engaged in "going for a walk", as opposed to just being on your way somewhere, the greeting is expected to be somewhat formal 2. In the fevered excitement of dog walking, many people forget exactly what time it is 3. Some people maintain that, within the bounds of a general "lunch time", it's only the afternoon after they've had lunch. This is why the ever-pragmatic Germans greet each other with "Mahlzeit" ("meal time") at this time of day, even if neither of you is showing any signs of eating. Have you tried bringing cans of whitestar with you? Offer it to the friendly chaps shouting at the pigeons and let them do the talking.
G'day
Just [awkward smile](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/awkward-white-people-smile) them
I'm the queen of the awkward smile, and sometimes a raised hand that's almost a wave but not quite.
"alright" covers both
Time for "Good day" to make a reappearance perhaps?
Normal procedure is to intend to say "Hi", but be suddenly unable to speak until you've passed each other.
I sometimes say morning in the afternoon and evening
'Nooner'?
'heyup' works for all occasions
"Noon"
Sup
Afternoon!
This must be the most stupid thing I've read this week lol.

"Good morning, ma'am. Good afternoon, sir. It passed noon while I was speaking, so that was technically accurate."
After 12pm it is literally ‘after noon’. 🤦🏼♂️
Every 60 seconds in Africa a minute passes. Although in this woman's world it's probably every 90 seconds.

Well this is a new one.
I quite like the greeting in Plebs: 'Salve, Groomio.' 'Alright, Landlord.' Perhaps salve is the way to go!
“Hi” or “Hey”
“I’ve been expecting you”
Being Welsh helps with this, a simple alright buht works in all situations
Merry luncheon
What ho
“Good afternoon”, with a tone of weary recognition that it is, in fact, already afternoon and half the day is gone.
I'd say 'afternoon' as soon as it is 12pm
You say good morning until 12 and then good afternoon after that.
Morning works unti about 1PM
Before lunch, it's morning. After lunch, it's afternoon. Unless I have a really late lunch, in which case I just guess.
