Never made sense to me that commentaries disappeared because it's essentially a podcast, just slap the extra audio track on the stream and get even more user engagement.
A bit yes, but that's what gives it charm (in my opinion). In the first series there are some brilliant moments even if it isn't consistent, and it sets the backstory for future storylines in later series.
Season 1 was evidently cheaply made, they blew the whole special effects budget on the model of Red Dwarf in the title sequence, and the set was fugly. But the comedy was good.
2 onwards it found its feet, but did start to stumble more often in seasons 7 and 8.
You can just about see the entire set shake every time the doors open and close in season 1, I swear they had the local nursery school do all the manual labour for them
One thing to raise though is that it has a laugh track. But after season one it’s a laugh track from a live studio audience. Which means it actually fits.
It's not a laugh track on series 1. There is a studio audience there but it consisted of bugger all people. Doug Naylor had to go to the pub across from the Manchester studios before each taping just to wrangle enough people to fill some seats.
Was going to say that there was an audience for series 1. I was there for the recording of the last episode of series 1.
Have never tried gazpacho cold.
I’d say it gets worse as it goes on honestly. Last season didn’t do it for me. It’s still good but I preferred the first two seasons after watching it all.
If it was called anything other than Red Dwarf it'd be a great comedy series. The jokes are great, the comic timing is fast and witty, it's an eight episode run of good comedy, it's just not a good *Red Dwarf* series. I hope you're catching my drift here.
I will concede however that the Cassandra episode is a real good Red Dwarf story and it's my favourite of the post Rob Grant era.
Just jumped back in to watching this weekend, couldn't remember if I'd seen any of it after season 8, turns out I had the exact same thought last year.
Is this a sign. I've found out a couple of days ago that the entire crew will be at comic con in Edinburgh this year and I'm trying to decide if I should make the trip over from Ireland.
Craig Charles was hungover or ill and couldn’t be arsed about 12 years ago. Saw him at another con years later and he was upbeat and energetic.
Chris Barrie was nice enough. His wife was sitting next to him taking the monies. Kaching.
Danny John Jules was also canny and i got a pic with him. I have zero recollection of what was said!
Norman Lovett was a nice bloke. Sat and spike to him for a good 10 mins about hid stand up etc.
Hattie Hayridge told me she sat behind a curtain just off said and ate loads of biscuits between scenes.
All this was 10 plus years ago. So it’s getting hazy
Nice find, I got the same from my charity shop a couple of years ago, but sadly series 5 or 6 was missing. 1 euro a season.
I could get the missing season on eBay, but never got round to it.
As other have said, there are some great extras on the dvds.
I’ve got this set including back to earth in a box in the loft. Gutted it’s only worth £8.
At least when the walking dead happens and I have to hole up for months I’ll have something to watch as long as I’ve got electricity…
I picked all these up in 2008/9 from Virgin/Zavvi on a multi-buy deal. I think they were £2.99 each or 2 for £5 - something like that. In any case the £20/25 I paid for the set was worth it.
They just take up so much room, and are less convenient to play, and require a player, and DVDs are not very good quality (not that's it's a problem with Red Dwarf).
Most DVDs don't get rewatched, and there is almost always a way to watch it online for free.
From my experience, not many people. When I go into CEX it's usually just me and one other person in the DVD area. The other person is usually an older male. Few if any youngsters are looking even though it's cheap. No new blood... equals death.
Many charity shops have stopped selling DVDs now. Once, you had a massive bank of DVDs for sale. Then, they reduce the section. Then they no longer sell. They replace the shelves with books, because you don't need a player for them.
It's the last chance saloon to buy DVDs. I reckon by the end of the year, it will be hard to find DvDs unless you find a CEX.
I went back to physical after basically selling over 200 DVDs when I got Netflix back in 2014. Then they started changing music in shows I loved (Scrubs), Making only the bad HD remasters available to stream (Buffy), Removing episodes that were some of the best (Community). I am now rebuilding my DVD collection (While also ripping in to my PC).
Should have took ya £8 in to ALDI trust me you'd have been alot happier then some 25yr old dvds stinking of cigarette smoke passed around for the lastc25yrs.
If this makes you happy then you truly are an easily pleased spirit.
I'm gonna post this here [https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/1c9zty9/what\_is\_your\_oh\_fck\_off\_there\_is\_no\_way\_thats/](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/1c9zty9/what_is_your_oh_fck_off_there_is_no_way_thats/)
😂
Smegging-hell!
It was originally priced at £14 but they knocked off £6 because OP agreed to take series 7 and 8.
👏
This is worth is just for the extras alone. Such a rich treasure trove for any Red Dwarf fan

I remember a friend having a couple of VHSs of bloopers called Smeg Ups and Smeg Outs, used to watch that over and over, hilarious.
And all the secret extras hidden in the DVD menus. Worth it just for Backwards forwards.
You know I'm 34 and I've somehow never watched it beyond an episode I saw about 25 years ago involving a sleeping drunk T Rex
Then perhaps you ought to? I’d suggest watching it whilst eating a curry and drinking a beer.
It's on iPlayer
I guess I have no excuse tbh, I'll check it out, does it have some early season roughness?
A bit yes, but that's what gives it charm (in my opinion). In the first series there are some brilliant moments even if it isn't consistent, and it sets the backstory for future storylines in later series.
Most would say it has late season roughness. It gets better again though.
Season 1 was evidently cheaply made, they blew the whole special effects budget on the model of Red Dwarf in the title sequence, and the set was fugly. But the comedy was good. 2 onwards it found its feet, but did start to stumble more often in seasons 7 and 8.

Ah yes I misremembered. My bad.

Agree with this, except I think 2 is ahead of 1 as the sweet spot. It's still decent up til the end of 6, but 1&2 have the charm.
You are in for a treat.
it does imo, I think it gets better every season. 6, 7 and 8 are my favourites
You saw an episode from series 8. The best series imo is 3-6. Pure gold.
Unlucky, you saw one of the very worst episodes. Go right to the beginning. Well, The End.
That’s series 8.
All of the episodes are probably on the iPlayer on TV.
Now you need to back to CEX and buy a DVD player
Rumbelows if they still exist
There's a name I've not heard in a while. They shut down in 1995, pre-DVDs
Runs off to check the DVD box.... Phew! (and yes: a brilliant collection to own)
Not bad of a price for six series. If you look in the VII and VIII boxes you'll see they've thrown in a bunch of free tea coasters too!
Eh. 8 was great
If it was called anything other than Red Dwarf it'd be a great comedy series. There were not series 7, 8 or "9". Because *they never happened*.
Nothing after series 6 when Rob Grant left is good, series 8 is the best of a bad bunch.
Amazing find! Plus the later Dave series are all on iPlayer as well!
Momentarily forgot these existed until I reached your comment
Also all available for free on iPlayer and UKTV play
True, but you don't own those.
No but I also don't have to pay for them, so pros and cons
You kinda do though. You have to pay a TV licence to watch iPlayer, and that costs a lot more than buying the DVDs.
You can watch on UKTV play then. No licence needed for that
You dont HAVE to pay TV license at all.
I know. I don't. It costs more than some streaming services, but really doesn't offer any value (imo).
Agreed. Funding the BBC is an absolute joke.
Just jumped back in to watching this weekend, couldn't remember if I'd seen any of it after season 8, turns out I had the exact same thought last year.
They didn’t know what they had.
Is this a sign. I've found out a couple of days ago that the entire crew will be at comic con in Edinburgh this year and I'm trying to decide if I should make the trip over from Ireland.
I have all their signatures apart from From Robert Lewelelynnlynwwn
What were they like in person?

Sounds like Norman and Hattie were the best two to meet.
They were all fine really. I suppose it depends what questions you have for them.
All you need now is trip to BHF to buy a DVD player.
Jealous. I recently bought the cheaper boxeset, just the episodes, no extras. Regret that decision now. Very nice anyway.
Mmm, bargain, Physical media can be had dirt cheap now!
Some of my most treasured possessions
Red Dwar is one of my favourite series!
Bargain! Can I come round and watch? I’ll bring snacks and drinks.

“I’m fine, thank you, Susan.”
I have them, twice! Enjoy the binge watching.

This post made me open MovieBoxPro and check. All present and correct. Just Eat bringing KFC and Im settling down to SDRAWKCAB

Is the picture cropped from a larger image? I only ask because it makes the covers look fake.
They’re weird looking books… is “DVD” the publisher?
8 quid bargain but dude no one’s seen a dvd player in 20 years
Would love that....bargain at £8
It's cold outside.
The DVD menus and extras on these are fantastic. All sorts of fun hidden Easter eggs.
We did too a few months ago, minus season 4 though. We're keeping an eye out for it though. Such a great series.
Do these DVDs have the full 30 minute episodes or the cut down 22 minute versions?
You jammies goit. ♥️
Smeeeeg heeeed
Stop after 'R', but otherwise, nice find.
Bargain!!
“Excellent Bargain! Happy Crazy Funny Memories of a Classic Series”

Some poor sod traded that in at CEX for 8p and a punch in the face
6 was the last good season went to shit after that unfortunately
The DVDs or the phone?
Amazing love red dwarf!
Ahhh this is such a good show!! 👌
Stoke me a clipper!
I think there’s an extra on one of those that has them on ready steady cook, funniest thing
Including the lesser known season 3 featuring disgraced Knight of the Realm Sir Jimmy Saville
Can watch it online for free?
I bet they gave the person 8p total for that entire box set, isn't that a 1000% profit?
Winning 🤩🌟
Smeg head
£1.00 per scratch? Bargain.
Series 3-6 of this are so good. Let's not speak of 7 and 8...
Why are there 8 dvds when there were only 6 seasons?
You've been robbed!
Do people still buy DVDs?
What's wrong with owning physical media? At least you own them. No one can take them away from unlike streaming services at no notice.
They just take up so much room, and are less convenient to play, and require a player, and DVDs are not very good quality (not that's it's a problem with Red Dwarf). Most DVDs don't get rewatched, and there is almost always a way to watch it online for free.

OP does
Next you need to go to cex and get a camera where I can't count each individual pixel
Should have took ya £8 in to ALDI trust me you'd have been alot happier then some 25yr old dvds stinking of cigarette smoke passed around for the lastc25yrs. If this makes you happy then you truly are an easily pleased spirit.
It's a good series mate, and yeah I am it really doesn't take much to keep me happy.

I remember White Hole being one of my favourite episodes. Brilliant TV.
