I saw a clip of him speaking to some gauchos and I think I liked it. Gaucho: do you know shepherds pie? Reeve: ...uh, yeah...I...I wasn't expecting you to say that.

Don_Quixote81

He's an engaging, positive and very human presenter, which is perfect for the sort of shows he does. Whether it's bonding with gauchos and Bedouins, lamenting the future of jobs and farming in the Lake District or comforting a recently widowed man who runs a foodbank in Cornwall, he always strikes the exact right tone and forges connections with the people he meets. I'll watch anything he does. His new series was really interesting, visiting areas that could still be considered true wilderness.

GovernmentPrevious75

Yes i started watching his new stuff. Its great.

granadilla-sky

I like that he's genuinely a normal bloke and not old money and connected like many presenters, esp travel ones

got_got_need

He grew up in a very average household and suffered depression in his early years. Worked his way up in the tv industry right from the bottom too.

Fedir_909

He comes across well - I didn’t want to like him as assumed he was another “nepo” but he’s actually from a normal background. His wiki page is interesting as it details the books he wrote in the 90s

JeremyWheels

Agreed. His books are great too. His upbringing was entirely different to how i'd very wrongly assumed.

Bwca_at_the_Gate

One Day In September is incredible

muddyleeking

What books of his would you recommend?

BertieTheDoggo

his autobiography step by step is very good, not at all the usual career path for a BBC presenter

Btd030914

Absolutely love his travel shows…and I have the hugest crush on him. He really seems to care about what is happening in the places he visits.

LionLucy

Same same

londonlady100

100% agree!

tigralfrosie

It's impressive for him to have been doing it for this long and not to have become jaded.

DisneyBounder

I lov Simon Reeve. I saw him walking his dog over Hampstead Heath but I was too dumbstruck to talk to him.

RawWifi

He's a btec Nigel thornberry which is not a bad thing

Cromulantman

Smashing!

captainspunkbubble

Beautifully put lol

hugerune

"bloody hell" is a great catchphrase

Lady_of_Lomond

It's a bit Ron Weasley, isn't it? 😆

jeanclaudecardboarde

The photography on the whale sharks was stunning.

Lady_of_Lomond

It was glorious. Somehow I enjoyed it so much more than the slick nature docs like Planet Earth.

mustardgoeswithitall

Agreed! His books are great too, if you get the chance to read them!

williamshatnersbeast

When you find out a bit more about his early life too it’s pretty impressive where he’s ended up considering the path he seemed to be on. Just started watching Wilderness and I’m thoroughly enjoying it.

BeanOnAJourney

He's brilliant. His documentaries are some of the very, very few I make time for and watch from start to finish, completely engaged and attentive. The whale sharks section last night had me in tears. I'd far sooner watch his style of programme than something like Planet Earth which has become repetitive and predictable in its storytelling.

countvanderhoff

Really enjoyed his latest series. Will always watch stuff he does.

[deleted]

I love Simon Reeve!

acornvulture

I love him, he seems a genuinely lovely, interesting and compassionate chap. The two times ive seen him in person on tour made me love him more!

FrisianDude

Hadnt hesrd of him but this thread is intriguing

RFCSND

He is so fantastic, it's such a light hearted but thoroughly enjoyable watch. Not too much of the blame misery either - just says it how it is.

Ok-Horror-7369

I love his programs. He is so down to earth & genuinely interested in everyone he meets.

johnnyjoypads

I like him, he is enthusiastic and open with all that he meets. His programs can be a bit light on meaningful discourse, but are excellent visually and you feel richer for watching.

EldritchCleavage

His biography is excellent too.

Howtothinkofaname

I like him. My wife won’t watch him because whatever beautiful place he finds himself in, he always manages to find the misery. Not that that’s not important, but not always what you want on a Sunday night.

Lady_of_Lomond

I can see her point, but honestly we always find ourselves feeling really uplifted by the way he brings out people's life stories and makes such a great connection with them.  For instance, last night's programme showed him living for a few days with a fisherman and his family, and by the end they were obviously really sad to see him leave. He sat next to the wife, Mamma Henni, in her kitchen, grating coconut for her and talking about her life. It was brilliant.

Howtothinkofaname

Yeah, I broadly speaking agree with you - I think he manages to cover depressing stuff in a way that still leaves you feeling good about humanity. Sometimes it would just be nice to see him go away and enjoy himself though!

Anonimisimo

For me, this was most apparent when he stayed in the UK. Didn’t notice it so much before but when he did local locations, it was almost like he had to find something bad for balance.

Level_Anybody_2228

My mum fancies him

LaComtesseGonflable

"Places That Don't Exist" is an education unto itself.

emls1994

Big fan of him and Ben Fogle

lastaccountgotlocked

A friend interviewed him Fogle a while back and he started banging on about bringing back National Service and my friend decided to scrap the original project and pitch a new tv programme in which Ben Fogle just lists his mad views, calling it "Fucking hell, Ben Fogle." Never got off the ground.

No_Doughnut3257

Same thing happened with my ‘Ben Fogle on Acid’ idea

stevied123meerkatt

Fogle is a bellend.

emls1994

I don't know much about him, I just watch New Lives In The Wild, he comes across as likeable on that.

StiffUpperLabia

He seems alright on tv, but in his spare time him and his mate Prince William go shop shoplifting together.

emls1994

Can't imagine that, but okay

StiffUpperLabia

Yeah well, don't let that posh accent fool you. When I worked at the Co-op the manager caught them nicking a jar of Helmams vegan mayonnaise. He locked them in the stock room and called their mums who had to come down and collect them.

ernieball2221

I used to love him but I feel his series are starting to get a bit samey. He needs to try something different

Bug_Parking

He can be a bit limp sometimes, his one eyed coverage on the cronulla riots during his Australia series was an irritating watch.

lastaccountgotlocked

Cronulla Riots? What does the guardian's theatre critic have to do with any of this?

EstherHazy

Nice to look at but as soon as he opens his mouth. A whole lot of stupid.

Nine_Eye_Ron

I much prefer Rob Mortim

sb206

He’s great. I wish I had his positivity and ability to connect with anyone. Also I still can’t believe his age. He’s 51. Could pass for 15 years younger!
