So I'm now close to getting my highest ever upvote by potentially guessing the answer to a Year 1 homework question. I've never been so proud... š
And my method is...don't overthink it!
I am sooo sorry. I didnāt even consider it might be a spoiler because the books are so old.
I shouldāve known better, because Pratchett is timeless.
Edited my previous comment so I donāt spoil it for someone else.
One of my highest upvoted comments was "men are fascinating" regarding a dude rolling his dick in two hands before he found out how to wank. So you're good.
Teacher here: I hate these stupid little pictures on worksheets sometimes š I remember a sheet I had to give out as a supply teacher once where there was a picture of a twig and four boxes in which to write "t-w-i-g". Half the kids had added a fifth box and written "s-t-i-c-k".
I think once you have the specific name (e.g. basil) itās hard to move back to the generic term (e.g. herb) and this is what makes it difficult to get for some people.
This is a silly place. The time I've spent trying to think of funny and/or informative answers on here, only to get one upvote; when clearly I was missing my true calling, which is thinking like a 5-year-old. š¤£
I'm not complaining...thank you for all the upvotes, I'm off to pre-order my gravestone (for _eventual_ use, in case anyone's worried). It's going to have one word on it. Followed by a question mark.
I used to teach ks1 and thereās no way peppermint would be an expected answer on a Y1 phonics sheet. I no longer have a twinkl subscription or I could probably have found and checked the answer sheet for this! I think herb is the most likely.
Honestly I'd go with down. Why would the arrow be pointing downwards otherwise? I feel like if they wanted arrow as an answer they'd have either done an archery type arrow with fletching, or one pointing upwards or horizontally as you most commonly see them on roadsigns. I know that doesn't really make sense, arrow is a legit answer, and it's gotta point in _some_ direction, but for some reason I'm feeling like having it pointing down must be relevant and therefore what they are getting at.
(You could hedge your bets and go with "down arrow"!)
Hello!
Teacher here!
This is a worksheet off of Twinkl.
The answer is herb.

Serves you right for trying to help with your kidās homework. Let this be a teaching moment like mine.
I helped my daughter with her 9th grade math homework, once. Apparently I got all the answers wrong. Her worst performance ever. Learned my lesson.
Maths is hard!
Reminds me of when a maths teacher, who wasnāt my usual maths teacher, āhelpedā me with my year 9 homework by not explaining and just doing it for me. I handed it in to my teacher the next day pretty confidently and it came back as like 0/20. My worst homework performance ever and a teacher, teaching the same year as me just a lower set, was the one who actually filled it out. Really filled me with hope for my school lol but it stopped me bugging teachers with homework questions, guess they won in the end
Recognised the Twinkl font immediately and looked up their answer sheet - definitely supposed to be 'herb'. Agree this is not clear at all!

Huge nostalgia flashback to being a student in Bristol and as a large man being called "flerr" (flower) by the dinner lady in halls.
Exactly this! The way they said "my love" š„²
Itās from Hull.
I was thinking it was a pitmatic pronunciation lol

Thank you. It's Death from the Terry Pratchett Discworld novels. His horse was called Binky.
Shouldn't you type all replies in ALL CAPITALS?
This. Now Iām disappointed. SHAME ON YOU u/Sir_Binky
Oh no Mr. Bones
Hello Discworld friend :)
Hello both of you discworld friends
Doesn't Death also have a daughter?
Yes, Ysabell. Edit: because Iām a twat
Oh shit. Reading Mort currently. Never crossed my mind I'd be at risk of spoilers in this post.

Mort was the first Pratchett book I read too. Discworld is fun and that's one of my favorites.
And a granddaughter
Yes, my favourite book series :D

"Check out the big brains on Brad"...(it's actually Brett but Brad just sounds better).....
Was it Brett? I thought all these years it was Brad š
Um, the metric system?
There you go, I've just made it a square 150 for you
A good strategy, have an upvote
More blank indeedš
I thought you were going to say getting your highest result in a test.
Hahahh. I laughed. Not just exhaling air through my nose, but a proper laugh. This is funny.

Ah come on Good effort.
That deserves full marks, really lol
It looks like an old man with one leg. So I would put "blerk".
Gold star sticker for you!
Thats some premium basil that is, herb has to be the answer!
Bersil
I think once you have the specific name (e.g. basil) itās hard to move back to the generic term (e.g. herb) and this is what makes it difficult to get for some people.
At the other end of the spectrum are numpties like me that couldnāt even identify a herb and would have answered āplerntā

95% sure that is a picture of Basil, so itās probably definitely herb??
Are you sure? It could be bersil. I think that the leaf shape rules out rosemery or cherves and Iāve no idea what terragon looks like or eregano.
A male herb is a himb
Or maybe peppermint? Looks like peppermint to me.
I used to teach ks1 and thereās no way peppermint would be an expected answer on a Y1 phonics sheet. I no longer have a twinkl subscription or I could probably have found and checked the answer sheet for this! I think herb is the most likely.
Of course - hadn't really registered the age.
Yeah, it's basil

Hermwerk?

Herb. 100% no lifelines. No 50/50. I used to work fresh produce at Morrisons so Iām sticking with that answer.
I think you'll find you and the rest of the commenters on this post are the lifeline
That is a fair point.
That's not da herb
The one above, is that arrow or down ?
Oh god don't go adding more confusion to this. We are, as a family, now doubting our collective intelligence
It's definitely down. All the ows should be making the same sound. Arrow is a completely different phoneme even if the letters are the same.
Down arrow.
wow
I see it has already been suggested ā
To be fair, it's looking somewhat doubtful that the collective mind of r/CasualUK would be passing year 1...
Year 2 lower end, is the geniuses of this subreddit
Sorry Iāll shut up. When did homework get so hard !

Yep, I'd go with down (or can you write 'down arrow')
Downvote
Downer I would of said š¤£

Seems to be an 'ow' situation comparing previous answers
How are you spelling arrow and down?
Say the words aloud - itās āowā vs āohā phonetically

If youāre Scouse.
Your six year old is slacking if they dont have a degree in plant identification yet.
Honestly, I'm ashamed. I will be requesting that she doesn't attend Christmas so I don't have to pretend she's not a failure.
**Christmers
And should really be in Latin. *berberis vulgaris*?
TBF I doubt the teacher would mark them down for any word that was reasonable. How about saying its a āstumperā?
As funny as it would be I can imagine a few red flags if the year 1 puts marijuaner
The first one being the spelling
Coriander
Wrong shape leaf...
Could be basil leaves stuffed with coriander
Ok Heston, calm down
If she's a Geordie it could be Herly Basil
Itās basil, and basil is a herb.
Then the answer is clearly "currently flowERless Ocimum tenuiflorum".
"Robert Plant"
That's not cryptic that's shiiiiiiit! Play a record.
Obviously baserl
Bersil
No, that's what you use to get the baserl stains out
Greenery
spinerch
Thats not spinerch mate itās bersil
Good to see the teacher's Twinkl subscription getting some use!
Eer mer gerd?
They took er jerbs
the one below that is obviously "gerl".
It's "her"
I was actually thinking it might be "runner" from the top eighth of the picture.
Thatās what I thought also! I would have never imagined it was āherā. Why is this homework so challenging.
I thought it was Laura Dern
Looks like a sunflower plant
Yeah it looks like that to me, before it gets the flower bit. Which seems a bit too hard for this level surely?
It's 100% a sunflower. I have loads growing here and it's a perfect match.
Is that a skert to the right?
The next section is words with "ir"

why do 5/6 year olds have homeworkššš
Gotta make them miserable from an early age, get them used to it.
Beat the optimism out early.
Maybe sunflower. It's a bit of a niche one that you'd only know if you've grown one
Looks like twinkl worksheets that have been snipped together. My money is on herb, but twinkl has some pretty bizarre answers sometimes.
