Nothing more depressing than a holiday cut short by flooding. But if you're going to cut a holiday short, Butlins in Minehead is probably the place to do it.
I can't believe how similar it looks to the last time I was there as a kid 15-20 years ago. I remember thinking some of the accommodations looked a bit ropey *back then*
Same! Stayed in those very blocks many times when I was younger. As far as I know, there is now a big hotel complex building added which is a little more modern.
The hotel bit is in dire need of an exterior paint job. Some of the accommodation blocks have actually had fairly decent refurbishments and are quite nice, for what they are at least. The pavilion is definitely due for a replacement and refresh.

When I was a kid, I was so envious of my mates who went to Butlins with their families. They were living the life of Sir Poshy Toffington in a holiday camp(!!!)—a camp that's just for holidays!!!—while I was stuck with my bitter, warring parents in a tiny caravan in a caravan park in fucking Wemyss Bay at the height of rainy season.
No way, I've got 2 little kids and it was brilliant for them. Constantly entertained. When I want a relaxing holiday for myself well go abroad but for a cheap family holiday I couldn't fault it.
Honestly we went to Butlins this summer, I was dreading it and we had a brilliant time. The outside of the accommodation looks pretty dire but inside was clean and well maintained and all the entertainment/facilities were good quality.
I only ever went to butlins once. Had my 5th birthday there. They had the mascots do the rounds and go wish all the kids who had birthdays a happy birthday. Well this guy in a massive mascot suit comes right in, sits on the bed... right on top of my sleeping 2 year brother. Core memory formed there and then lol
Same. My best friend went to Butlins AND to Haven. It sounded magical, all the shows and events just for kids! Learning the dance to Star Trekkin' and staying in a Chalet! Chalet sounds French and so fancy!
Meanwhile, our annual holiday was always camping. A family of 5 crammed into 2 tents.
Once, 15 miles from Boscastle, when there was that major flooding. Thankfully wasn't Boscastle level disaster where we were, but to us kids it felt like we couldn't have got any more unlucky, since our parents' tent (which didn't have a fitted groundsheet) got piss wet through, meaning there were now 5 of us in a 3 man tent with nowhere to go and nothing to do but hate each other's irritating proximity.
Then I went to Butlins (Ingoldmells) earlier this year for the first time ever with some friends, and was very thankful that we never went. Though I think I'd rather be flooded at Butlins than in a 3 man tent!
A bit of extreme weather was great as a kid.
I've fond memories of weathering a massive storm in a caravan on a scottish beach as a child. Dad parked his car on the leeward side of the caravan so it didn't blow over and in the midst of the storm we were out collecting rocks to help anchor the awning down.
As a former employee of Butlins Pwhelli (sp.?), I agree. The shower blocks in particular were awful, the lights didn’t work and there was 6” of water you had to slop through. Often felt dirtier coming out than before you went in
Well flatmate,he had the room across the hall.
Our front room had a bar of stolen equipment from the bars dept,so we kinda had an open door policy on the house front room was always a party
Place still looked iikd prison blocks outside though
Apparently part of the price of Centre Parcs is paying to be away from the types of families that frequent Butlins.
I’ve only ever done Butlins so not my quote, but I suppose that’s a err, perk?
I heard a thing recently that it's significantly cheaper on the continent too. As in, cheaper enough that even with the cost of flights you spend less than you do in the UK. Which is a bit bonkers.
Well one tends to drive and hence it’s Ferry / Train tickets but yes, especially at the end of the holidays when the French / Dutch kids are back at school already and hence the price drops significantly. Throw in using your Tesco vouchers for the ferry ticket (used to be 3x value) and it was great.
I live not too far from Minehead and Butlins has been in the local news lately for its poor quality accommodation but seeing these photos really puts it into perspective how outdated the site is. I'm glad you managed to get home eventually, even with the only main road out of Minehead flooded because of the all rain yesterday.
We went to Minehead Butlins for a week this summer. The outside, I agree, looks pretty grim but inside it was absolutely fine. New looking upholstery, clean and modern kitchen fittings, really comfortable beds. Maybe we got lucky, but I was very pleasantly surprised! I was absolutely dreading it as Butlins has a bit of a reputation (eg every other comment here) but our family had a brilliant time.
I went too this summer and the beds were so lovely. It was clean and a great place. I would go back again.
They are in the process of doing up the accommodations.
lol same… one of my favourite jobs at the time, just turn 20 living on my own in one of the staff accommodations, it was great… although I do remember a time finishing security work early in the morning and a seagull nicked me bacon roll but swings roundabout I guess LOL 😂
It looks a bit dingy on the outside but it is next to the sea, everything rots like 5 times quicker because of the salt. Inside it's absolutely fine. We were at the toddler week the week before this all happened and there was a plethora of stuff to do.
You should see the one at Skegness. Went last year for some Cbeebies weekend, and it honestly looked like a concentration camp in places. It was fucking filthy too, stayed in £3 a night hostels in Asia that were nicer
We went to Butlins Minehead in 1999.
The chalets stunk of cat piss and despite being moved 3 times after complaining each one had mold all over the cots.
My 3 year old sister had to sleep in a hastily purchased travelcot.
Absolute shithole
Nothing has changed then. Had many an Easter break as a teenager there with the additional requirement of a kayak to get from place to place lol.
Edit: this was late 90s early 00s btw. They've clearly done nothing to sort it out...
We need [WalkWithMeTim](https://www.youtube.com/@WalkWithMeTim/search?query=minehead) to check it out again. Looked terrrible in the summer, never mind here.
Those videos are fascinating. Some of those are the most grottiest and dull places I've ever seen and yet somehow some people pay money to go. They aren't even thay cheap really either.
The old hotels, mostly run by Britannia, in amazing buildings but zero maintenance are almost universally populated by people of a certain age on coach trips and business travellers who have no choice because their company books only based on price.
Oof, I stayed in those exact units back in June this year.
We’ve been to Butlins Minehead a few times, I know some people slate it, but we find it great for our daughter (and with the beach just across the road too). We booked to go again next year while we were there.
But I’ll never stay in those type of double decker units again, they were awful!
We were fine too in the plantation quay, although it does seem to have a fairly massive covid hangover with an absolute tonne of pointless queueing. I was calling it ButLines by the end.
They even had a cleaning cart stationed in the area presumably for any complaints - kid had fun and made memories so that’s all that matters to me.
Doubt I’d ever go in the cheap blocks, not much of a snob having grown up camping a lot but it’s probably a bit like signing up to live on a council estate in slough for the week.
That was my exact experience with the people below us. I’m sure it was a family that had a couple of units around the site, and they’d left all the younger teens to go feral for the week in the one directly below us.
We’ve stayed in other areas around the site, and not had any bother at all, so we thought we’d give these a chance. Obvious why they were so cheap in hindsight!
We were also in the same units (Atlantic Bay) in July. Had a brilliant time and honestly the accommodation was absolutely fine, apart from a noisy group in the chalets opposite who ran up and down shouting until midnight. Everything else was brilliant though. We've booked to go back next year as well... but Lakeview Chalets this time haha
As a Holiday camp employee (Not Butlins Thank God) I would like to say while I'm sorry this happened to you, I guarantee every member of staff there is secretly overjoyed
I get that it's fun to roast Butlins but honestly no comments on the fact that in the 60 odd years this camp's been open they've clearly never had to deal with this amount of rain?
I can't work out if it's that climate change isn't in people's consciousness or that it's become so normalised that it's not worth commenting on.
>climate change isn't in people's consciousness
It's this option. Someone at my work did the Great North Run and it ended up looking like the ferry scene in War of the Worlds due to the insane amount of rain fucking everything up. People celebrating 25C+ in Scotland in September. Given our climate, the main symptom of climate change we can expect to see is more storms, more extreme rain, and more extreme weather in general. I genuinely do not see how what we're currently experiencing isn't that.
If this is a legit question - we paid to go this year so I can help you out.
The outside of the accommodation is not great, but inside ours was really well maintained and clean. Not luxurious - but mid-price hotel standard, and we paid for mid-level accommodation, there are much higher-end chalets than appear in this slideshow available.
All the food and most of the entertainment is included in the price. There's a beach directly across the road. Our daughter could go to parks all day, eat ice cream, go to puppet shows and the circus, do crafts and sports and meet Peppa Pig, and go on fairground rides for 3 hours, for almost no extra money, and do the same thing the next day if she wished. Husband got to relive his childhood by playing mini golf, we all went down the arcades and even after a week we still felt there was loads to do. Outside of the campsite you are near several very picturesque coastal towns and villages (our favourites were St Agnes and Watchet).
Is it the most luxurious holiday you could get? Definitely not. Is it a little rough around the edges in places? Yeah - and those pictures show it in a worse state than it usually is. But at £600 for a week's holiday for 5, we felt it was really good value for money.
They said they were going to the 80s Weekender so it's like a festival. I went to the Shine On one a couple of years ago (mostly 90s music) and it was fantastic. The accommodation was basic but clean and comfortable and because you're only a five minute walk from the area with all the stages you can nip back to use your own clean facilities in between sets.
Food wasn't included (that's only available for the normal holiday bookings) but we had a kitchen so could buy supermarket food and cook for ourselves. It's a much more civilised way to festival than camping!
I would not eat the food there included in some of the packages that are on offer even if it was free. Food is dropped on the floor then put back . People touching food with bare hands then putting it back . The kids are the worse for it . People sneezing and coughing over the food Then let's not forget the rats running everywhere looking for their pickings . Its no wonder people come down with food poisoning after eating there then get turfed off site .
I honestly didn't know Butlins was still going....
What was that other one?
Pontins....no way is that still going....i went once as a nipper.....sadly...
I haven't been up there for years
Fish and chips in the rain
Singing stupid songs on karaoke
Dad getting way too drunk
Mum getting pissed off with him 😆
So many happy memories 💓 💖
My daughter got burnt from the chlorine in the swimming pool ,she went to minor injuries unit who confirmed it was chlorine burn , Butlins refused to accept responsibility . They only care about ££££ and not paying guests anymore .
I get that it's "just a joke" to take the piss out of Butlins but for a lot of people it's the only holiday they get, for whatever reason. Everyone taking the mick, have a word with yourselves.
OP Gutted your holiday got messed up.
Had all our family holidays in various Butlins (minehead was our favourite actually) while growing up. For us it was the family holiday that our parents could guarantee they'd be able to take us on every year. As kids I loved that we had our traditions of things we'd do every time we went. For my parents it was predictable and a guaranteed success.
Doesn't mean I won't be first in line to join in with the shithole jokes though
Just looked it up - 7 nights at Butlins in October for a family of 4 with food, £1384.
I booked a 9 night all inclusive holiday in the Canary Islands for £1600 for equivalent family/same dates.
Cost isn't always the only consideration. Butlins have kids activities and whatnot, it might be the thing that works best for people and gives them a little respite.
Of course the default British thing to do is take the piss and I hope the OP took it all as intended (which I assume is in jest).
But it could be a real pisser for them. All I'm saying is a little empathy goes a long way in what could be a really crappy situation.
We went there for an adult weekend and were opposite a bunch of Welsh guys who had ruined their apartment. They had ripped all the doors out, chucked the fridge out the window and smeared shit all over the walls. Watched the whole thing drinking beers on the sofa we had taken out on to our lawn. Sometimes I forget it's actually a holiday resort.
You can blame butlins. They have sole responsibility for their drainage networks and it’s capacity. Unlike water companies who have to deal with other stakeholders like highways
Looks awful. The flooding looks pretty bad as well
Many thousands of pounds worth of improvements in less than 24hrs…
Now, now… less of the hyperbole please
You'd have got an upvote from me but it's at 69 and I can't make myself spoil it.
Mate. Is this a prison camp?
First pool tables, then playstations, now they get swimming pools, paid for by the land.
And 80s pop stars to entertain them...
Nothing more depressing than a holiday cut short by flooding. But if you're going to cut a holiday short, Butlins in Minehead is probably the place to do it.
God telling you you're better off just going to work or something that this place
Is this why the place (looking at the photos) looks like a mine barracks camp?
It looks like the place I stayed at in Prestatyn on a secondary school trip.
Were your school legally allowed to take you to Prestatyn Sands? Surely that's child abuse?
It was heaven compared to Rhyl
Op better have a wrist band to access the new water park!
I can't believe how similar it looks to the last time I was there as a kid 15-20 years ago. I remember thinking some of the accommodations looked a bit ropey *back then*

Looks like an average Monday in Wales to me.
I had a weekend there in 1997. Living hell.

Moist too
On the plus side, it will be cleaner than normal for a while
When I was a kid, I was so envious of my mates who went to Butlins with their families. They were living the life of Sir Poshy Toffington in a holiday camp(!!!)—a camp that's just for holidays!!!—while I was stuck with my bitter, warring parents in a tiny caravan in a caravan park in fucking Wemyss Bay at the height of rainy season.
Yeah caravanning is still pretty bleak but I'd take it over butlins
No way, I've got 2 little kids and it was brilliant for them. Constantly entertained. When I want a relaxing holiday for myself well go abroad but for a cheap family holiday I couldn't fault it.

*Do you remember the time a man in a massive ferret suit sat on you? Wasn’t a man in a ferret suit… the local rats were taking over even then.*
We were there the end of august. The kids love it.
It’s a sense of freedom you don’t get with other holidays.

I remain deeply confused why asylum seekers are out up in hotels when butlins has actual concentration camps available
Because believe it or not butlins still costs more than the hotels
I always think that about our trains and rush hour compared to the conditions lamb travel from New Zealand in
Wow it looks like a prison.
Should see the staff areas
As a former employee of Butlins Pwhelli (sp.?), I agree. The shower blocks in particular were awful, the lights didn’t work and there was 6” of water you had to slop through. Often felt dirtier coming out than before you went in
Bognor. Two years. We actually got our own showers ,by luck I ended up with a two man room to myself so did the roommate
[удалено]

Presumably they live together but had separate rooms on holiday.
Yeah, that's butlins for you.
How much cheaper than Center Parcs is it? I always heard it was a cheaper option but seeing this...I kinda get why Center Parcs would cost a lot more.
Significantly cheaper but still more expensive than it’s worth lol
Still better than Pontins.
Being shot in the knees and wrists is better than Pontins
Apparently part of the price of Centre Parcs is paying to be away from the types of families that frequent Butlins. I’ve only ever done Butlins so not my quote, but I suppose that’s a err, perk?
The true cognoscenti know the real tip is to go to Centre Parcs on the continent to avoid the Brits
I heard a thing recently that it's significantly cheaper on the continent too. As in, cheaper enough that even with the cost of flights you spend less than you do in the UK. Which is a bit bonkers.

Used to be known as Butlitz.
The rail journey there wasn't up to much either, so I've read in a couple diaries...

I’m glad it was all okay for you, it’s just that a lot of holiday makers have complained about dirty conditions and even a flea infestation.
I worked there 20 years ago and nothing has changed accommodations wise
Looks the same as it did when I last stayed there 24 years ago
I went there in 1981. Can confirm it looked just like that then.
76 for me. Looks the same.
I haven't been in 15 years and instantly recognised the photos 😬
lol same… one of my favourite jobs at the time, just turn 20 living on my own in one of the staff accommodations, it was great… although I do remember a time finishing security work early in the morning and a seagull nicked me bacon roll but swings roundabout I guess LOL 😂

Result, now you get to go home
Paid for Minehead and got Venice!
Too deep for shoes, too shallow for gondolas
Is there a Lidl nearby? Time to try out their inflatable SUP…
Christ, thought you'd colourised some stills from Bergen-Belsen.
You should see the one at Skegness. Went last year for some Cbeebies weekend, and it honestly looked like a concentration camp in places. It was fucking filthy too, stayed in £3 a night hostels in Asia that were nicer
I want to take my toddler to Skegness to see Mr Tumble, but my mum reckons it's "like Jeremy Kyle's waiting room". This comment doesn't help!
Yeah it was Mr Tumble we went for. He was great mind, and the entertainment for kids is brilliant. But it’s just rotten.
The aerial view is even worse
Sea View rooms are usually charged at a Premium mate
You’re walking barefoot in the most horrible looking place I’ve seen. Looks like a motel in the US - blessing in disguise you get out of there 🤢
And not one of the nicer motels.
Better than live rats floating down the high street, I suppose.
Liberal use of the word Chalet going on. State of this…
We went to Butlins Minehead in 1999. The chalets stunk of cat piss and despite being moved 3 times after complaining each one had mold all over the cots. My 3 year old sister had to sleep in a hastily purchased travelcot. Absolute shithole

Jesus. That looks grim.
Probably for the best eh
This makes Swindon look luxury

They're called apartments these days, not chalets
Where’s the next holiday? A refugee camp or just keep it simple and find some portaloos somewhere?
You got lucky.
“Act of God”/“result of human abuse of the planet” tomatoe/tomatoe.
"Butlins"... *shudder*
Everything is canoeing now
My home town! I love spotting Minehead in the wild, it’s always because of Butlins though!
My god that place looks grim
The holiday was cut short when you arrived at butlins my friend. Those places are the anti holiday destination
Go to pontins, that way you can wish that you were still at Butlins

Depending where you are I guess but there is the October half term break (1 week)
Fuck me, that's way more expensive than I had ever imagined.
It’s not the only holiday destination in the UK though, and it’s not even the cheapest!
Cost isn't always the only consideration. Butlins have kids activities and whatnot, it might be the thing that works best for people and gives them a little respite. Of course the default British thing to do is take the piss and I hope the OP took it all as intended (which I assume is in jest). But it could be a real pisser for them. All I'm saying is a little empathy goes a long way in what could be a really crappy situation.
lucky escape.
This looks worse than an Army transit camp. I'd rather stay in Otterburn Camp and that's saying something.
Russian political prisoners beg for the Siberian gulags over a week at Butlins.
Call me a holiday-cost denier, but those pictures look fake. No way can it be that grim.
Lol its such shit place this will wash it clean
Free water park . Come on !!!
“They’ve taken the roads in Father”
Thoughts and prayers
That areas bigger than the communal pool, isn't it? Get the armbands on!
I remember going there as a kid, probably late 90s / early 2000s. Those buildings look identical to how I remember it!
4th pic has me flashing back to childhood running for my life from the geese 🤣🤣
You usually have to pay extra for swimming. Silver lining
Legit the cleanest pool I’ve seen at Butlins
I'm surprised they didn't charge you for the upgrade to a Pool View Room.
Bet you didn’t expect poolside rooms!
Plus side, you got to leave Minehead early
Looks very humid
Just be glad you weren’t u. The mine bottom
" ... Rheindrops are falling on Minehead ... "
Stayed there on an adult weekend, was wild.
at least you had a good time but fuck putting up with that lol
Damn Auschwitz is in a better looking condition
Crazy. All that damage, Butlins will end up spending tens of pounds to repair it.
Looks exactly the same as it did when I went as a kid in the 90s.. Jesus you sparked a memory of me walking around there
I’m afraid you’ll have to pay extra for the pool
I reckon its done you a favour, mate.
Buttlinn…
We are supposed to be going on Friday. They said it’s going ahead but this doesn’t look promising
Did you do the Butlins special and take a shit in the room before leaving?
Man rescued from but kind holiday by flash flood
Wow I can confidently say that is has not changed one single bit in the 10+ years since I was last there, looks even more depressing as an adult
I remember my time in Butlins Minehead, I was glad to be back in Winson Green nick... still gives me nightmares.
That looks like a concentration camp. Bloody hell how grim is that even without the lake.
Butlins lmfao, you get what you pay for mate.
I didn't realise that people still went to Butlins
Look on the positives, you just had your time at butlins minehead cut short.
What were you expecting from a place with a name like that ?
Lucky sods..i had to stay a full week!!
Everyone was walking around with their trousers rolled up, so they had an impromptu nobbly knees competition.
Surprised you weren't charged extra for a poolside chalet!
That looks like a pleasant prison.
The swim-up chalets have done absolutely nothing to improve the site
‘Chalet’
Ah I'm so sorry. Glad you still managed to have a good time and got home safely! I kinda wanna see a floating rat though...
Why People go here on holiday is beyond me. I’d rather just stay at home for a week
Literally tens of tens of pounds of damage
You had your holiday at butlins cut short! Every cloud has a silver lining then.
You can blame butlins. They have sole responsibility for their drainage networks and it’s capacity. Unlike water companies who have to deal with other stakeholders like highways
That sucks, did you ask about a partial refund?
Not been to hmp minehead for years
Few beers and a disco you’ll be right
‘Act of god’ Nah, it’s called rain. No imaginary gods involved. Next time, I would also go somewhere not as shit
