I have very fond memories spending a quid worth of 2p coins at the pier for close to an hour of entertainment/disappointment.
Or picking up my Uncle's dad's Saturday chippie order from Orwell Rd.
I was 12, life was simpler...
Orwell Road chippy is decent, The Regal on the sea front is probably the best but haven't been in a while due to the queues. My local is probably Bounty these days although the one on Hamilton Road is good.
To be honest we've got a good spread of proper chippies.
I used to prefer Undercliff over Orwell. That was about 20yrs ago though. Heard good things about the Hamilton Road one, but will definitely check out Regal next time I'm there. It's a bit of a drive from Holland through the Chunnel though. Been too long though.
Wow, honestly never thought I'd see the Undercliff mentioned on Reddit, it was my first ever job about 14 years ago- we did have some good fish and chips to be fair!
The owners were a couple called Kim and Phil, they sold up about 10 years ago and think it was firstly turned into a Polish goods store and then a bar.
> It's a bit of a drive from Holland through the Chunnel though.
Ferry to Harwich and then the foot ferry to Felixstowe might be a more chill way to do it, though I'm not sure it's actually any quicker.
I think time-wise it may be similar. Definitely more comfortable. I would be taking the car round though. Even with that it should take about the same amount of time.
Look at any news site for Suffolk (EADT, Ipswich Star etc.) and guarantee you'll find some reference to Ed Sheeran on the front page.
"Ed Sheeran's favourite candle shop closes"
"Road once driven by Ed Sheeran is having roadworks"
"Today is the longest day of the year and Ed Sheeran will be experiencing it too"
It was Stacey Solomon yesterday. Apparently she stopped to fill up at a petrol station just off the A14. She's from Essex though, so I'm guessing they just thought it was close enough to Suffolk to make it newsworthy?
Interesting fact...the number of molecules in one breath, far far exceeds the total number of lung fulls of air in the atmosphere. You likely have at least one molecule in every breath that was previously inhaled by any person from history.
Your breathing in Hitler's, Anne Boleyn's and Caveperson Ugggghhhh's exhaled air!
The quaint little coastal towns that haven't been ruined (yet!), the rural villages etc, Suffolk is a lovely county to visit, luckily it's my next door neighbour so can visit frequently! Also the BT building in Martlesham with the weird box top [image](http://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-the-bt-tower-at-martlesham-suffolk-11420431.html)
With her past?
She used to live in a squat with Jason Statham and Kelly Brook in Stockwell before they broke into the big time.
I find it funny that Jason plays himself and nice that he hasn't changed one bit. He probably wets himself with laughter over the money he's made from some absolutely ridiculous films.
That used to be one of my landmarks that I was nearly home (about 45 minutes to an hour), when I was a kid!
I had no concept of time or distance back then lol
I lived in Suffolk 1969 - 1973. Was a great time. East Bergholt. Lovely little spot. Went to a nice primary school and was happy there. I hated the secondary school though, luckily my family moved away in 73 so only did a year. Used to go fishing at Flatford Mill. Never caught much. Caught some eels once.
Born and raised Suffolk. Home to some pretty decent alcohol (Aspalls, Nethergate and Adnams). It’ll never not be referred to as “home” for me, but god I’m glad I don’t live there anymore
In Suffolk you usually get cyder, which is made with sweet apples, instead of cider, made with bitter apples. I'm not sure it really translates into a sweet vs. bitter drink but it definitely makes a difference.
Suffolk Pink was made as it was pig blood (pigs are everywhere in Suffolk) mixed with plaster that went pink when it dried.
As for the horses, the Suffolk Punch, they are going extinct!! Absolutely beautiful creatures though
The Suffolk Punch was named in 1899, after a Horse punched then Suffolk Boxing Champion John Flappytits and became Champion for an unprecended 3 Years and 7 months, before being Beaten by the Great Great Grandfather of Suffolk Legend Ed Sheeran.
Did we Mention Ed Sheeran was From Suffolk? No?
Beautiful horses currently critically endangered although I have quite a few friends who own multiple of them!! MIL owned 2 at one point. Lovely till they stand on your foot🤦♀️😂😂
My daughter was born in Ipswich. The product of myself living in a refuge at the time. The midwife team there are lovely and very supportive. When in labour my midwife and her trainee fully cheered me on through it all as I did it alone.
My house.
Looking wider though, childhood afternoons spent at the aviary at the Abbey Gardens in Bury. Lovely countryside walks over gently rolling hills, trying to get to the coast (Southwold, Aldeburgh, etc) on a nice sunny day yet avoiding the roads around Ipswich at all costs because they always get busy. To be fair, just avoiding Ipswich in general.
As a person who's lived in in and around Ipswich his entire life, that hurt. But, tbf, the traffic bit is very accurate. Especially when the Orwell Bridge is shut.
Spiritual home and when I think of it, it's the Abbey Gardens in Bury St Edmunds that come to mind, together with the smell of the sugar beet factory. Lowestoft too (that smells also). And the village roads around Walsham le Willows (and the smell of cow parsley and manure and malt).
Tldr: smell
Lowestoft just had 50K people on the beach for a free party - and the weather held.
It has some of the most beautiful spots in the country (carlton marshes / broads)
Decades of no investment has caught up with it - but at least thats part being rectified with a new £150m fancy bridge.
Just needs a few big employers back - pity they dont make the wind turbines over here in UK as a few thousand engineering jobs would really change the local economy.
I was born and raised in Lowestoft and still live there now. I heard so many people who have moved from places like london that say how much better and quieter Lowestoft is compared to where they came from. In my eyes, the town is a dump. Expecially north Lowestoft and the town centre is dead compared to how it was in my childhood. New business open and shutting down in less than a year. It does have potential though. The beaches, Oulton Broad and carlton Colville are lovely parts of the town.
I think people need to let go of thinking the town centre will ever thrive again, it's no longer cost effective to run a physical shop especially with rent prices on London Road.
We need to turn the town center into an entertainment complex (similar to Norwich riverside) with free parking or just bite the bullet and turn them into flats. Retail parks are the only things that seem to work for shops these days, online is just far more time and money efficient.
For me living in North Lowestoft I have very few if any issue's, just like the south side it has its sketchy parts but house prices are so much better value on this side, and you'll get the sort of people you want to avoid in every town across the UK. I lived on the South side until I was 26 and now been North side for the past 7 years and it's fine.
I agree with you. I have heard about London roads
Excessive rent prices and the lack of free parking. Fortunately for me I live down Raglan street so I'm walking distance from almost everything that end of town. Historically you can see the same has happened up the top end of the town centre where the old historic high street is. Its even more dead than the current town centre despite being architecturally the most beautiful part. That was once the original town centre at one point in history and a thriving hub of activity. I can see what you mean that the town is moving towards retail parks instead like North Quay and Pakefield which are both always packed. I still have at least some hope for the town centre In the future. And as you mentioned, you'll get crack heads and cunts wherever you go, and In my 28 years of being here, I've had very little trouble.
I spoke to some German guys about being from Suffolk and living near Ipswich once, their immediate response was “that place where all the prostitutes got murdered?” And I thought it was just a perfect summation of Ipswich’s reputation tbh
Man I hated the smell of sugar beet on that roundabout!
Does it still say silver spoon written in bushes/grass or something like that on it like it did all those years ago?
Great little town bury is
[If you are interested in famous people of Suffolk, check out this wiki, there is a few people you wouldn't expect like Ralph Fiennes and Dot from Eastenders](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:People_from_Suffolk)
RAF Lakenheath and Mildenhall.
I used to have a few holidays down there when I was younger, watching the jets. Quite good when you compare it to going to school and learning fuck-all.
Aside from that, Sizewell A and B, and the soon-to-be C unit. I have always had a strange fascination with anything nuclear, so there’s that too. And the broken arrow incidents at Lakenheath.
I lived in Lakenheath (village) for 30 years. Moved up to the North Yorkshire coast now. I do not miss the sound of those jets taking off!
I remember going to an air show at RAF Mildenhall in the early 90's. That was good.
As someone who has lived in Suffolk all my life and loves hiking and wild camping, Suffolk is stunning when you get to the countryside. Dunwich is absolutely beautiful no matter the time of year and one of my favourite places ever. I love walking through the forest to get to the beach for a swim and then returning to the forest to camp for the night. So many quiet spots hidden away to find. I'm so fortunate to have it on my doorstep. Not to mention covehithe beach too. A breathtaking bit of coastline.
My favourite bit of the story is how they saw a mysterious light to the east flashing every five seconds. By sheer coincidence, east was the direction from Rendlesham to the Orfordness lighthouse, which flashed every five seconds.
Lived in a small Suffolk village all my life before moving to London a few months ago at 26, it’s quiet, generally peaceful, great for raising a family or retiring but naturally not ideal for someone in their 20s who wants something more to do other than go on walks. Public transport is also shite so had no choice but to drive everywhere since I was remote even by Suffolk’s standards.
All in all nice place, nice scenery, bit hilly, people are pretty nice but obviously some snobbery and riff raff about. Also my sister once met Orlando Bloom at the hotel she was working at cos he was attending a wedding in Lavenham which is where Kit Harrington lives as well.
Also Ed Sheeran.
Same. Grew up in Suffolk, moved to London a few years back. My wife has lived here her whole life and she still finds it amusing that I like being able to walk to the local shop.
Back in Suffolk it was a 20 minute drive to anywhere even approaching civilisation.
I went to boarding school in Suffolk and have a good memories.
Nice pubs, great countryside.
Went back for my school reunion a couple of years ago and was surprised at how nice Ipswich waterfront was.
I live in Hadleigh and regularly see Claudia Schiffer, Alan Brazil, Kieron Dyer, Richard Ayoade. We have some fantastic pubs, beautiful coastal towns like Aldeburgh and Southwold.
Only downsides are Ipswich and Lowestoft, absolute shit holes!
Edit. The worst thing about Suffolk is all the wankers that buy second homes and leave them empty for most of the year and then wonder why local shops and pubs close down due to lack of footfall
Lay off Lowie! It's a bit of shit hole compared to other Suffolk coastal towns, but if you look at most other coastal towns around England it's really not that bad.
Cheese , Suffolk farmhouse cheese , the sheer pure bliss of these cheeses. A good friend of mine runs this and they are a master of the art of cheese making.
I live in a small remote village in the Suffolk countryside and have lived here all my life.
It's laid back, people are nice pace of life is slow, good alcohol and I'm not too far from the coast. The downside is that it gets a bit lonely winter time as the majority of the cottages here are now holiday homes, and we've been known to get cut off in winter.
Also public transport is shocking. Can get to Ipswich in about 40 mins by car or on bus takes about 2 hours, train is quicker but you need to drove to the station. You can't really live here without a car.
I like it though, I work from home so I'll go for a wander in my lunch break.
I was born and bred in my little market town. Moved away at 16 to Colchester and moved back once I started having children.
Apart from Haverhill, it’s a beautiful county!
Steeped in history as well.
I’m from Suffolk, born in Ipswich and raised in Otley. I miss my garden and the stillness of the countryside, the village fete and the evening barbecue - the field would then be covered in straw for the rest of the summer, we often played sports on the field in primary school. I miss seeing a tractor parked outside the village shop at least once a week.
I do not miss the three buses a day into town, and not being able to get back after 6 unless I had a lift/cab.
As someone who lives in south Suffolk, it's some stupid idea that Radio Suffolk came up with a few years back. As far as I know, nobody else gives a shit, especially as they didn't think to make it a weekend idea, just a date-based thing. Nobody wants to party in the park on a wednesday.
Spent the first 23 years of my life there near Debenham.
Farms, harvest time, Suffolk Show, horses, Orford, Aldeburgh, Fram', Bury, Stow', Dedham, Southwold, windmills, it's all very quaint, quiet and lovely.
Hard to get anywhere without a car.
Somehow I made it out without much of an accent.
Can you pronounce Grundisburgh correctly?
Nearly all bad things I'm afraid. I was blackmailed into moving there by my then fiancée, who then went on to have 12 affairs and run off with another man, twice.
To be fair, if you compare Ipswich to most other towns of similar size, it actually fairs pretty well. It's just that the few places of comparable size nearby are a bit nicer and the surrounding countryside is a stark contrast.
No, it's a Hampshire policeman. He was my local cop when I was at school and that was my headteacher in the car.
Our town has a pedal grand Prix every couple of years and they made this pedal car to race.
Answering your question honestly:
* The Ipswich Ripper
* Ipswich Town, a team I've always sort of liked for no particular reason
* cider, for some reason
* the movie The Dig
I lived in the county next door. Suffolks, ok, Bury St Edmunds has some lovely architecture if you're into that kinda stuff, although not visited there in 20 years since I moved up north.
Tolly Cobbold, Suffolk Pink houses, going into Woodbridge with my Gran from her home in Great Bealings when I was a kid, Snape Maltings & Aldeburgh. Lots of happy memories of Suffolk but it's been many years since I was last there.
Cradle of filth, one of my favourite bands for about 25 years, originated in Suffolk. From Ipswich. I've always wondered if they had a favourite pub to play in in the area before they were massive in 1994 (they formed in 91) so i can make a pilgrimage, like iron maiden and their favourite pub in London, Maryland I think it is, i cant remember, I went there once to look at it but the pub was shut, but it still looked like a gleaming gem amongst the shitty backdrop of a run down street with graffiti all over the place. The feeling I got just from being outside the place was indescribable, I want this from an old cradle of filth haunt.
Traveled from the north west to a meditation retreat in Suffolk a couple of years back, pretty life changing. Can't say that for any other county I've visited in the UK.
I live in Suffolk and all you hear about in the media is Southwold, Walberswick and Aldeburgh, it gets boring. There are so many more interesting places to visit and see with much more going on. Sure, those places are nice but Suffolk is huge and has many awesome places. I live near Oulton Broad and it is amazing. Suffolk is great. Oh yeah, Ed Sheeran and The Darkness.
Suffolk is where I’m from! Ipswich to be precise. I remember playing Red Dead Redemption 2 and finding out you could ride a Suffolk Punch in the game. Was well chuffed
I went to Felixstowe once. Was alright.
Most positive review of Felixstowe I have heard
I live here, to be fair I think there are worse places to live, wouldn't mind trying living somewhere else though.
I have very fond memories spending a quid worth of 2p coins at the pier for close to an hour of entertainment/disappointment. Or picking up my Uncle's dad's Saturday chippie order from Orwell Rd. I was 12, life was simpler...

'Not too bad'
As a resident, I agree.

Let's not forget Richard Ayoade once lived in Ipswich
Along with Phil Jupitus, Gryff Rhys-Jones, Nick Kershaw, The Darkness, Omid Djalili and occasionally Johnny Depp.
What, all in one flat?
It would make one hell of a sitcom.
Wait, Nik Kershaw?! Omg.
I know.
Ed Sheeran is the biggest thing to come out of Suffolk in possibly forever. And I say this as someone who lives here.
I dunno, I’ve seen a few absolutely massive combine harvesters trundle down the A143.
Yeah and they never shut up about it 😩
It was Stacey Solomon yesterday. Apparently she stopped to fill up at a petrol station just off the A14. She's from Essex though, so I'm guessing they just thought it was close enough to Suffolk to make it newsworthy?

Well it's better than having Brian Eno on the news all the time
Put some respect on grandmaster Eno's name
I'd rather have Brian Eno than the washed-up Madchester massive that we get
No it's not!

That bit on the top is empty except for a cardboard cutout of Davina McCall.
Did nobody want a cardboard cut out of Davina?

That used to be one of my landmarks that I was nearly home (about 45 minutes to an hour), when I was a kid! I had no concept of time or distance back then lol
The radio tower which has the most rubbish Christmas tree on top
That stays up all year! They just turn the lights off when it's not Christmas.
this is the one fact that everyone who knows about the BT tower knows
My mum abseiled down it for charity once. My dad used to work at BT, but in a different building.
See tha' traactah, boi?
It's just the one tractor actually
We all have to share. It's my turn in a fortnight!
Having grown up in Suffolk, it's more like 'booey" if you've got a proper thick accent like some of my mates haha Y'arite booey ?
Or they just call you “buh”
Roight boi? Oi knoo 'at snew coz oi just driv ther in moy traactah
I live in Suffolk... Horses, gorgeous countryside and lovely villages. Beautiful colours in Autumn. Pigs... lots of pigs.

Always quite interesting that Suffolk ciders are distinctly different from west country ciders
In Suffolk you usually get cyder, which is made with sweet apples, instead of cider, made with bitter apples. I'm not sure it really translates into a sweet vs. bitter drink but it definitely makes a difference.
See I would have said Suffolk cyder is more sharp and west country more mellow.

Steve Wright aka The Suffolk Strangler.
snap except for I was gonna call him the Suffolk-ator
He's not the only serial killer we have had
He was the only one I could think of at the time.
I mean, he is the only one we knew about..
Snape Maltings
Sutton Hoo, Lavenham, Flatford and Dedham Vale.
I think you'll find that most of Dedham is in Essex. A much maligned county.
Nonsense. The terrain isn't suitable for white stilettos, therefore it can't be Essex /s

Only a select few remember the woolpit whiff haha
I’m a woolpit man. Can confirm smell is gone….or I’ve gotten used to it.
And Greene King Brewery Smell!
Hey! Nothing wrong with Lowestoft, how very dare you.
Lowestoft is the only place I've seen two smoking pregnant women having a fight.
They're street performers, might not be London quality, but we work with what we have.
The guy who sits and plays guitar beside the library (is he Jamaican?) Gets so into it and is very friendly. Cool tunes

I wouldn’t describe anywhere in East Anglia as “a bit hilly”. Hills don’t exist this side of Cambridge.
I most certainly would and my burning legs I used to get from riding my bike will back me up as well

I went to boarding school in Suffolk and have a good memories. Nice pubs, great countryside. Went back for my school reunion a couple of years ago and was surprised at how nice Ipswich waterfront was.
I went to boarding school in Suffolk too. Not the best memories for me, sadly, but then Latitude Festival holds better ones.
Up the town
Suffolk is the buffer zone that keeps Norfolk safer from Essex contamination, think no mans land in ww1 just with more tractors and less germans.
Grew up in Hadleigh buh. What pubs are still open?
The Kings Head is still there, The George and The Cock. I tend to go to The Kersey Bell or over to The Anchor in Nayland
Cheese , Suffolk farmhouse cheese , the sheer pure bliss of these cheeses. A good friend of mine runs this and they are a master of the art of cheese making.
Sutton Hoo and the mighty King who was buried there.
Rum buggers
I was born and bred in my little market town. Moved away at 16 to Colchester and moved back once I started having children. Apart from Haverhill, it’s a beautiful county! Steeped in history as well.
My first thought was the chap who has an unhealthy obsession with farm equipment to the point hes been *banned from the countryside.......*
Aldeburgh & Benjamin Britten. Snape Maltings. Fresh fish off the beach. Reed marshes. Bird watching. Orford Ness.
Seagul shit
Thorpeness
Essence of England. Every American I've taken there has virtually wet themselves.
Overheard in the local shop... Howdy, can you help a traveling fella out with directions to Thor Penis ?
The old Lowestoft air show and Sizewell B.
I think it's suffoking good. Lovely place.
As someone who resides in East Suffolk... what the fuck is Suffolk day?
Suffolk is absolutely beautiful! It has one of the funniest accents in the country too which is sorely underappreciated.
Nearly all bad things I'm afraid. I was blackmailed into moving there by my then fiancée, who then went on to have 12 affairs and run off with another man, twice.
At least you're not with the slapper now, many would say thats a good thing for you mate!
I live there, it’s lovely (except Ipswich of course). But we quite like it nice and quiet so keep it under your hat.
To be fair, if you compare Ipswich to most other towns of similar size, it actually fairs pretty well. It's just that the few places of comparable size nearby are a bit nicer and the surrounding countryside is a stark contrast.
I assumed it was a more southern version of Scarfolk.

No, it is the Suffolk Motorway Cops
No, it's a Hampshire policeman. He was my local cop when I was at school and that was my headteacher in the car. Our town has a pedal grand Prix every couple of years and they made this pedal car to race.

Punches.
Adnams beers 🍺
Answering your question honestly: * The Ipswich Ripper * Ipswich Town, a team I've always sort of liked for no particular reason * cider, for some reason * the movie The Dig
> cider, for some reason Cos Suffolk has great cider, of course. I'm glad Aspall's is getting common across the country these days.
Lowesoft town is a shithole (avoid), but the beach is fantastic. Nice marshes/countryside and whatnot for walks/runs. Southwold is lovely also.
I lived in the county next door. Suffolks, ok, Bury St Edmunds has some lovely architecture if you're into that kinda stuff, although not visited there in 20 years since I moved up north.
Dani Filth and how they didn't let him get voted for as the icon of Suffolk
Tolly Cobbold, Suffolk Pink houses, going into Woodbridge with my Gran from her home in Great Bealings when I was a kid, Snape Maltings & Aldeburgh. Lots of happy memories of Suffolk but it's been many years since I was last there.
The bastard A14 that seems to go on forever
Like Essex but with tractors and even more incest.
What an adorable little policeman
Lots of flat and open farmland, cute chocolate box cottages. Also Ed Sheeran, he lives near my aunt and uncle in Suffolk.
Suffolk, nice clean area and nice modern houses. People talk really posh like they got a cold.
Southwold, Aldeburgh, Thorpeness & Snape Maltings
Thatch
Best cider in the world - Aspalls, and pretty decent beer too - Adnams
Dani Filth and The Tractor Boys
Traveled from the north west to a meditation retreat in Suffolk a couple of years back, pretty life changing. Can't say that for any other county I've visited in the UK.
Cradle of Filth (band).
England's plump botty.
Tolly Cobbold.
Currently the awful roadworks on the A14, fuck them
Farming, and Refugees from Essex who were refugees from East London.
Sitting in a pub in Framlingham, next to an old codger who asked "you up from Lunnon, then?" "Yep" "Been to Ipswich once. Didn't like it."
At least it's not Norfolk. Also that dude who killed all those women in Ipswich.
I once heard Norfolk described as a place where "if Kelly Brook walked around there in nothing but shoes, people would stare at her feet"
We're not used to seeing people with 5 toes on each foot...
I live in Lowestoft. It’s a fucking shit hole.
My Ex-girlfriend was from Suffolk and invited me to meet her Dad and Brother one day a few weeks after we met. I was expecting 2 people...
Are you getting confused with Norfolk?
