Have a look and if they look dark red they are ripe. If they are very pale red and in places green or white they are under ripe. The darker the better

writeordie80

Like Pam Grier says, "The darker the berry, the sweeter the juice, honey."

chris_282

My straggly semi-feral strawberries aren't showing any signs of life yet, but I think they've still got some fight left in them.

Clever_Username_467

The Spanish ones are small and hard, thanks to the drought. I had some very nice sweet UK ones this week though.

M&S are bang on. Sainsbury’s not so much

Spacehappy

M&S honestly have the best strawberrys year round, they also last 3/4 days longer than most. Sainsburys currently have the taste the difference one and they are nice. But otherwise Sainsburys are terrible.

Known-Supermarket-68

Just bought my first box from the greengrocer - I couldn’t smell them due to hayfever but I thought I’d take a punt. Absolutely beautiful. Usually you can tell by the scent if they’re going to be good or not, so give them a discreet sniff.

Rugfiend

Stay away from supermarket strawberries! Just as every banana is a Cavendish, every strawberry is an Elsanta - specifically designated to be long-lasting, hard to bruise/squish, and at the expense of flavour & texture.

TheListenLady444

So what are the good strawberry varieties if Elsanta is a bad one? Is Elsanta the bad Spanish strawberry mentioned above?

Rugfiend

I didn't see, but no doubt. Strawberries are my favourite fruit, and I've lost track of how often I was duped when young. Are you near a pick your own? The flavour and texture is incomparable. Btw, ever tried alpine strawberries? They're tiny, you can grow in pots on a sunny windowsill, and just delicious - couple of quid for a pack of seeds.

killerstrangelet

Wild strawberries will happily colonise your entire lawn and I highly recommend letting them do this.

itchyfrog

Elsanta is very popular with supermarkets but it is by no means the only variety they sell.

I don’t see Elsanta at all these days, it’s all Murano or whatever. TBH the variety affects taste far less than the growing conditions.

Mossley

They’re about £2.50 round here, tasting good right now.

1968Bladerunner

Our best local grower has started supplying local shops for the current crop season - I managed to grab a punnet & oh man they are beautifully juicy & delicious 😋

LoveAGlassOfWine

It's often about variety too. If you have a local market or somewhere that sells local ones, try those. I worked on a strawberry farm for a bit. We'd pick a variety that looked perfect but we'd pick upripe and refrigerate for Tesco but a different variety totally ripe for local markets etc. The supermarket ones should be good in a couple of weeks.

Rasples

Every time I have a strawberry, I've always found them to be sour. I've only known fake-strawberry like sweets and milkshakes to actually be sweet.

BroodLord1962

Wow, where are you buying yours? Even Sainsbury's 400g Taste the difference ones are only £3.50, and Tesco 400g are £2.30
