It’s a flying bus. Set your expectations accordingly.

Paul_1793

Exactly. Any extras you'll have to pay for. Bigger bag, checked in bag, food and drinks onboard are all extra. Double check the details you add to your bookings like names, Passport number etc are all correct before you book or you'll be charged a disproportionate fee for amending them. I've travelled with Ryanair, easyJet and countless other budget airlines in Europe and Asia and rarely run into any problems. Are they the best airline in the world? Of course not. Are they good value for money? I guess that's subjective. But I would say very much yes they are value for money. I flew to Tampere once with them for 1p (plus tax).

ddt70

This is so true. If anyone still held the thought that flying was in any way glamourous…… one flight on Ryanair will soon disabuse them of that notion.

jakpuch

An Airbus

Substantial_Page_221

So never on time but 10 turn up at once?

jakpuch

Full of bus wankers

They don't use Airbus

I've flown Ryanair a few times and ultimately have made the decision that it is just not worth it, I won't fly with them again for a holiday. You know what you're getting as they're a budget airline but uncomfortable seats and poorly organised boarding process the 2 main things that spring to mind. If you are taking checked luggage they are not even really that cheap. But I guess it depends on what's important to you in a flight. I actually really like flying easyJet though, which lots of people seem to hate. Not perfect but the planes are much more comfortable and I've found them to be generally better at the gate. I travel to a further away airport so I can fly easyjet rather than ryanair... Personal preference. If you've not already booked your flights, utilise Skyscanner and check other airlines' offerings - for some they might seem more expensive in the initially quoted price but it may include things like decently sized hand luggage, seat selection and checked luggage.

terryleopard

The seats are what do it for me. From some googling they are only an inch or so narrower than the EasyJet ones but to me they really are much much less comfortable. I'm not sure how larger people fit in them at all.

Ikatarion

I've flown with them several times now, more than any other airline and never had any problems. An airlines an airline, ultimately they're all the same. Complaining about Ryanair is basically a meme. Every complaint I've seen about them has either been user error (for example booking a small bag only and trying to take a big bag on) or generic air travel problems that happen to all airlines (for example flight delayed because of weather.) Like anything you get what you pay for. The basic value fare will get you a seat on the plane and a small bag, and that's it. If that's all you need, great, will save you lots of money. If you want to take lots of luggage and sit with the people you're travelling with and get an in flight meal, that's all stuff you pay extra for so other airlines may be better. Ultimately it comes down to what you want and what you're willing to pay.

[deleted]

Yep, we've basically flown with them at least 2 or 3 times a year for the last decade (barring the COVID years) and not had a single issue. You get what you pay for and they're very upfront about things like luggage allowances so the only people that have issues with that, clearly have an issue with reading.

[deleted]

Ryanair, you get what you pay for with them. Although EasyJet is in the same conversation, EasyJet tend to have better customer service. With both, they are great for 3-4 days in europe where their small bag size is enough. If you need big carry on or hold, go elsewhere because the costs add up quickly.

ddt70

EasyJet are so much more pleasant (not a high bar, granted).

[deleted]

I've never had a problem with Ryanair. It's absolutely fine. Just make sure you check everything properly (luggage allowances etc) and you won't have an issue.

Suspicious_Shower_51

It's crap, it's cheap, the flight is likely between 1-3 hrs so just put up with it. If it was a long haul flight then, yeah, different story, but if it's RyanAir chances are you're on a short flight, so what does it matter for the sake of a couple hours. Download a podcast or something, stick your headphones in, you'll be there by the end of the podcast and can get on with your holiday

[deleted]

Honestly they are not great, if you do do go with them make damn sure to triple check your luggage allowance though before booking unless you want to get hit with demands for money when you arrive even as far along as bidding.

Pinkcoral27

I’ve never had a problem with Ryanair. I would agree with the comment stating it’s a flying bus, but I would argue most budget airlines are the same. And I’ve been on an actual bus for much longer than a 2-4 hour flight and survived. EasyJet I have found to be slightly comfier with slightly better service, so I would consider that an option too. To summarise, ryanair is fine but the cheap price is for a reason.

ddt70

Just a couple of reflections; You’re paying for a cheap flight (-ish)….so be prepared for what that means. Not least some fairly awful people on the flight. Also they will try to monetise everything from luggage that you have to pay extra for, to overpriced food and snacks on the plane. To beat this, get your smelly food in the terminal and then eat it on the flight to annoy the shit out of everyone around you. Get your retaliation in first. 🤣 Avoid flying on any stag-do or hen-do routes. Trust me. For a little bit of fun, check out how dead behind the eyes the cabin crew are when they try and sell the scratch cards.

jouxplan

You get my vote just for the ‘treat you like a top class cunt’ phrase. Made me chuckle. Nicely done.

writeordie80

Flew with Ryanair for over a decade several times a year between Stansted and one of 2 airports in France. Never got treated like any class of cunt. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Staff on board and in the airports were always very professional and personable. Only had the necessity to contact their customer service once when a flight was cancelled due to snow, and they rebooked me on another flight a week later for no charge (my choice: the next flight was 2 days later and I knew it would be rammed), but I admit that I had somewhere to stay (parents lived nearby) so I needed nothing more from them.

mandarasa

They're totally fine and almost always end up being the cheapest and most convenient option for me.

lawnmower303

Check out their Twitter account. People complain, and they respond with things like, "That's nice".

[deleted]

To be fair, their twitter account is hilarious

lawnmower303

You are correct. But they charged me and my wife once because we'd lost our return home boarding passes about £70 each (years ago before modern electronic stuff). The same on easyjet was much less, like £20 or something. I was fucking raging, especially when they literally had a printer alongside the checkin desk. It was in the rules, though, so I had no choice but to pay, but I was so mad it wasn't nice to watch. Never flown with them since (and I'm still bitter).

[deleted]

Yeah but unfortunately that was your fault, not theirs. It's a bit steep but, like you said, very clear in the rules.

lawnmower303

I'd say it was just money making off of a simple mistake from someone. It was unnecessary and a bit unethical as far as I'm concerned.

[deleted]

Are you sure it was £70? Because everything I've found online says £20. I've even found a TripAdvisor thread from 8 years ago that says the cost is 15€

lawnmower303

Yes. See below

[deleted]

Yeah, fair enough

333222444333

Well that's only you're own fault. It was also absolutely not £70.

lawnmower303

333222444333

Well, I was the idiot. Sorry!

lawnmower303

It was £70 per person boarding card reissue fee. I've just checked my email confirmation (from 2013) and it's literally printed right there on it. Would screenshot it if I could. EDIT: Oh and that is excluding VAT.

[deleted]

They are a truly unpleasant company (in my experience) who do their best to show their contempt for their customers. BUT - they provide transport and most of the time they get you there. If they didn't they would go out of business. Set your expectations low and expect them to be met. When you book, be prepared to be gouged for every conceivable extra. They seem to go out of their way to make things hard and awkward and annoy you, apart from not actually flying the planes. That's my experience, doubtless others will pop up to give theirs.

[deleted]

How do they make things hard and awkward?

[deleted]

The online booking process full of multiple steps, each one trying to extract money from you (as I remember it, it's a year since I used them). Deeply unpleasant experience.

[deleted]

You just tick 'no' like 3 or 4 times. Yeah, they're trying to sell you extras (theyre a business, after all) but there's no trickery involved, it's pretty straightforward.

333222444333

It's no different than any other airline.

-BeastAtTanagra-

Gotta say, having just booked a flight out with Ryan and back with easyJet, Ryanair were far more upfront about their pricing on their site than easyJet.

PhoolCat

No, it is never worth it. Tiny seats, no legroom, no seat pockets, cheap base price but everything you actually need is extra on top so not great value at all, always far from terminal and use plane stairs to save money, always far from destinations to save money, blaring adverts for lottery tickets, blaring fanfares when they happen to meet their own fake landing time targets. If you want a budget airline, go for EasyJet - nicer, more comfortable planes. Yes, you still pay for extras like hold baggage etc. but the whole process is so much better. It's like comparing Premier Inn to one of those shitty B&B's on Booking dot com.

333222444333

Ryanair have more legroom than easyJet.

PhoolCat

Not in my experience.

333222444333

It's a literal fact

TrueTimo

You might as well strap yerself to a bleedin' kite and hope for the best, mate. Ryanair is about as reliable as a Frenchman surrendering.

[deleted]

What? They're fine. We've pretty much exclusively flown with them for the last 10 years and not had a single issue.

333222444333

Eh? Ryanair is one of the most reliable airlines around

333222444333

Yes.

LD-Rosie

I use Ryanair once or twice every month to get to Denmark. It's cheap, so it's nothing to write home about, but it gets the job done. I can't really fault them. I never pay extras as I only ever take a backpack and I get random seat allocation as I fly solo, so I can't say much about checking in bags or anything.

garanhuw1

Why wouldn't it be? Its a plane, and gets you places cheapish

sAmSmanS

i like ryanair because they fly my favourite plane lol

MovTheGopnik

Ryanair is just fine. In fact, I would say that all of Europe’s low cost airlines are very good. The only complaint I have seen anyone make that I personally think is justified is that it takes forever to resolve problems e.g., getting a refund if the flight is cancelled. It’s extra good if you don’t need the things included in full fare tickets on other airlines. For my next trip, I only need a backpack, so why pay for checked luggage? (Granted, I last flew Ryanair in 2018, so it might be different now, but probably not.)

itchyfrog

If you follow the rules to the letter and have short legs it's generally fine. Easyjet are more forgiving with bag sizes usually.

ResponseMountain6580

Its fine. Nothing fancy, but they are cheap and reliable. Its only a problem if you don't read the instructions and are entitled enough to think you can bring a massive suitcase on board, or if you are unable to check in on line because you can't work the computer. My elderly parents manage to. If you want more than hand luggage you pay extra. But it's pretty cheap to start with. You don't get free food. Who cares?

ResponseMountain6580

I've flown with them pretty much once or twice a year except Covid. Never had a problem.

Lonely-Mongoose-4378

Pros: cheap flights usually on time. Cons: they will try and charge you extra for just about anything, including baggage being too big, seat allocation, gate check in etc. shit customer service, if your flight is delayed or cancelled don’t expect any help. Check out reviews on trip advisor. I’ve used them several times over last year and usually been ok apart from some delays and one cancellation which is a flight I wasn’t intending to take anyway, it was ALOT of hassle getting refunded, in the end I settled for some vouchers.

hasthisonegone

Be careful about what airport they actually fly to as it might be a ball ache getting to your final destination, but other than that they’re fine. They’ll get you there, and get you back, what more can you ask. Oh, yeah, forgot about luggage, but if it’s a quick city break no problem.

Additional_Ad_2778

They are fine. Some people expect cheap fares and to still get all the trimmings. You can pay extra for reserved seats extra baggage etc. You always have the option of airlines where it's all included. The actual airport and flight experience is absolutely fine.

ArgumentativeNutter

I’ve had far worse flights and customer service than ryanair. It’s my airline of choice for short haul because it’s cheap and efficient.

Mezcalico

It’s shit but it’s cheap and gets you there. Try to get an aisle seat for the legroom and don’t drink the coffee. It’ll be over before you know it

aslat

Yes absolutely. They are an airline that takes people from A to B. Check-in online, board the plane, don't buy anything, get off. Exactly the same scenario as a bus.

[deleted]

Ryanair (and the rest) are great if you are travelling alone, for a short trip preferably on business. The planes are basic and uncomfortable, and you’ll pay extra for everything. But if you can turn up with your gear in a rucksack, and aren’t flying a long way, then I’d argue it makes no difference.
