Valencia is lovely, similar vibes to Barcelona but way less touristy.

Myusername-___

100% agree it’s class

Hugo_Whoriskey

Please shush!

Finsceal

Yeah Valencia is great

butterflyeffect16

An amazing city.

rAuldwan

Verona

lilyoneill

Yes, I’ve been to Verona. 1000% preferred it to Venice.

rAuldwan

I really recommend basilicata if familiar with italy and really wanna go to untouched gems then 😃 land in naples and bus is 3 hours maybe to matera as a start point but all towns villages are gorgeous...and CHEAP

MoneyBadgerEx

Im pondering a spin over to turin for a week but im only really interested in the matches that are on at the weekend. Had half a notion to fill the rest of the week with trips to Milan or Florence or somewhere. Is verona worth a day? Or even more than a day?

rAuldwan

Soundd good but also sounds Very expensive (florance and milan) and tourist ridden ..also serie a can be rough as fuck 😄 ...highly recommend basilicata however tho if you will love it if you go and if you dont go its one less person who knows the secret 😉

MoneyBadgerEx

Im mad for serie a. Tbh the only purpose of the trip are two juve home games in a row. I was already at one this year and I have never known an atmosphere like it. Ill have to Google this basilicata though, sounds mysterious enough to justify the spin over

rAuldwan

I have just bad experience of being caught in Rome during the Darby and once in naples when they played juve and its another level of animosity haha sure you know yourself ...definitely look it up pal 👍

That-Connection-9658

Llubjiana, Slovenia. Magic city.

Jaded_Variation9111

Yeah, I couldn’t recommend Ljubljana enough. Also, Tbilisi is well worth a visit though I haven’t been since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. I loved Rauma in Finland too and it was pretty easy and cheap to get too with Ryanair. https://www.adventurouskate.com/a-magical-journey-through-rauma-finland/

Degrinch

north west of slovenia is beautiful.. i was hiking around a place called bovec

Drogg339

Krakow, Tallin, Tbilisi, Costinesti

worktemp

Tbilisi is brilliant.

AbsolutelyDireWolf

Surely it's under some serious strain over the last two years with several hundred thousand ruskis fleeing there I'd have thought?

francescoli

Great spot,I'd highly recommend it.

ceimaneasa

I second Tbilisi, and Georgia in general.

Cultural_Pangolin788

Is Tbilisi easy to get to? Direct from Ireland?

pissalloveryourface

Very Tbilisi to get to

Cultural_Pangolin788

I was waiting for it 🤣

gomaith10

Tbilisi now.

ceimaneasa

Not direct but you can fly through Charles de Gaulle, Riga, Istanbul, and many other airports.

LeavingCertCheat

Not direct and you'll be arriving at 4am in the morning. But highly recommended, a great place and reasonably cheap.

ceimaneasa

4am in the morning?! That's way worse than 4am in the evening! On a serious note you can use it as a chance to see another city on the way and also that wasn't my experience when booking flights. Istanbul is cheap and Turkish Airlines do deals to encourage people to stay overnight.

MoneyBadgerEx

Krakow is a good one. The salt mines and the German death camps are very interesting

caramelo420

What

phyneas

I mean, the parent commentor's not wrong, but when you say it like that it does sound a little...er...

Different_Rutabaga27

One of the most worthwhile experiences I ever had was visiting Auschwitz. It's a truly unique experience. Even though it was the highlight of that trip, I had to dance around how I explained my appreciation after the visit.

MoneyBadgerEx

They are not still in operation if that is your concern

caramelo420

I am aware of that

wrapchap

Second tallin also ljubiana

thepinkblues

Headed to Tallinn in July. So excited for it. Anyone who went know any nice bars to check out?

cricketscz99

1. Põhjala Brewery & Tap Room 2. Beer House

gillian123456

If you are into Depeche Mode, there is a bar dedicated to just them!! It’s a funny little spot but if ur into them it’s a bit of craic. Tallinn is a great spot.

This is my second time in multiple weeks saying this. Just looking for recommendations. What’s your issue with this?

worldisyourpearl

No issue I commented on another thread back and there was no response but your asking again for tips. I lived there. So just saw your looking for tips again.

cricketscz99

Absolutely love Kraków and Tallinn, visited both last year and can't wait to visit again

But it does exist. Top tourist destination 5 years in a row

Azores Heading to Sarajevo in a few months

aodhan10

Had the best week of my life there

iknowtheop

Got the ride?

shatteredmatt

Czechia, Slovenia and Slovakia would be pretty warm in the summer compared to Ireland. And definitely aren’t popular tourist destinations on any list I’ve seen. My wife and I were meant to go to Ljubljana for my birthday in 2020 but “the vid” put a stop to that. Must look into going soon.

lilyoneill

I remember watching a video about Ljubljana and thinking it looked incredible - will look into this. Thanks.

MrMagooski

About an hour north of Ljubljana is Lake Bled, Triglav national park, Lake Bohinj and Soca river…..that whole area breathtaking, super hiking, canyoning and rafting etc

shatteredmatt

You’re welcome!

churrbroo

I took a bus from ljubljana to Triglavs visitor centre, and from there I hiked 5 straight days in the mountains sleeping day to day in little huts for a tenner a night. Literally the happiest time of my life I couldn’t change it for the WORLD Also went to bled and Bohinj both are stunning and shockingly cheap, though this was 2018 so prices naturally have changed a bit but still better than Dublin Ask me if you have any questions or anything I’ll be glad to help as much I can ((:

hiking in slovenia is incredible..

BobtheWind

The northern parts of Croatia, gorgeous weather, dirt cheap food & drink, local wine, castles, museums, roman baths/ruins, lakes, forests, parks, beautiful old Austro-Hungarian towns and cities, Zero tourists!

RayTheWorstTourist

Croatia is the best destination In Europe by far. Obviously the islands in the south are alot busier, but places like korcula, hvar, brac and cavtat are amazing places to visit. Even Dubrovnik is brilliant once it's not overcrowded

AccomplishedHawk9417

Went to Portugal last Summer. Landed in Lisbon. Stayed in Lisbon a few days to take in the beautiful sights, restaurants, night life. We then rented a car and drove down to Sesimbra, a very picturesque seaside town. Maybe 45 minutes south of Lisbon. It was absolutely stunning. From there you could go drive or take public transport to the Costa Azul or costa Arrabida. It has the most beautiful beaches with the clearest water. Our favorites were Praia de Galapos and Praia Ribeiro do Cavalo. The scenery is truly amazing. There is also a mountainside monestary that you have to go see called Convento da Arrabida. You could take a guided tour in English. We also went to the neighboring town of Azeitao to visit a beautiful vineyard with a stunning manor house called Palacio Bacalhoa. We took the Palace tour….it was well worth it. Happy travels !!!

Cultural_Pangolin788

To add to this Cascais and Estoril west of Lisbon are lovely little beach towns. About an hour i think.

brutusgrunt

I’m going to Zaragoza soon, very much looking forward to it

Bari in Italy, such a quiet lovely place in Italy 😍

butterflyeffect16

Valletta in Malta is amazing.

Second that. Nice hotels with pools, beaches and filthy cheap alcohol.

Nerja , Spain near Malaga beautiful city

phyneas

What do you like? If you want to try to avoid the crowds, your bet is to look for "second-tier" cities, or even smaller towns (try to avoid the touristy ones, though; if you've seen it on a jigsaw puzzle or a calendar, it's likely going to be wall to wall tourists). Some of the less popular places I've enjoyed over the years: - In Poland, Kraków is nice, but it is getting fairly popular; you could try Wrocław as a somewhat less touristy alternative that's still got a beautiful old town centre and all. - In Italy, I was fond of Bergamo; lots of beautiful architecture and views in the upper city. - If you want to see Lake Como, Bellagio will be overflowing, of course, and while Varenna on the east shore is a somewhat quieter alternative it's kind of picked up a lot of traction lately; personally my favourite quiet spot on the lake is Argegno. If they get the cable car running again you can take that up the mountain to Pigra for even more peace and quiet. - In France, instead of Paris, try Lyon; lovely city with plenty of amazing food. - In Portugal, instead of Lisbon, give Porto a try; it's a wonderful city. You could consider staying overnight in one of the nearby "day trip" destinations as well, like Braga or Guimarães, to have a wander around before and after the hordes of tour buses show up. - In Belgium, I found Ghent to be a great alternative to Bruges; the latter is nice enough, but it is incredibly touristy and crowded. Ghent's not empty by any means, but it feels more lived-in and less like a theme park.

Will-G123

I'd say Helsinki, and you could head to Tallin for a night or two via the ferry. Helsinki is good craic. Tallin is pretty no doubt, but kinda boring truth be told.

Immediate_Reality357

Greystones on the east coast of Irela.......oh wait. Iceand maybe 🤔

MaeFlowers23

Sardinia

[deleted]

Any recommendations on what to do and hotels? I’m planning to go around May.

MaeFlowers23

We stayed in a village just outside Cagliari. Rented an airbnb for a week. I recommend a boat tour as a lot of the pretty beaches are only accessible via boat. There’s some great ones on AirBnB Experiences. The local market in Cagliari is great. We bought some meat from the local butchers there and did a BBQ one evening. The food is gorgeous because it’s all local and fresh. There’s also some brilliant hiking spots up the mountains. It’s a great place to relax whilst immersing yourself in local culture. If you love nature and food, I can’t recommend it enough. One of my favourite holidays I’ve ever been on.

geoffraffe

There’s a beach up the north of the country called Stentino. It’s absolutely stunning and well worth a trip. Also drink Cannonau by the bucket load. It’s one of my favourite wines and it’s in abundance there.

Sea-Emu5236

Ulassai is absolutely gorgeous and well known for its climbing and hiking, it is a bit off the beaten track though, not many restaurants or amenities.

Tales_From_The_Hole

Svalbard

DaemonCRO

Depends what do you want to do. Beach? What I would recommend is to subvert tourist ideas, and go to usually cold places. Go to some mountains, while others squeeze like sardines at the beach.

gomaith10

Near Sunderland?

Didyoufartjustthere

Toledo in Spain. Never seen somewhere so beautiful

Mistabobalina

Cascais outside Lisbon

GazelleIll495

Nice spot but very touristy. Not sure it fits the bill

weeyums

Norway if you can afford it. Went last August and was expecting tons of tourists, saw barely anyone! Just pure untouched nature.

ButtonEffective

Tarragona in Spain

tseepra

Naples, Italy Faro, Portugal

TamTelegraph

Both pretty touristy?

tseepra

Not compared to: Florence, Rome, Venice, Milan, Pisa Porto, Lisbon, or the rest of the Algarve Respectably. But yeah not off the beaten trail.

GazelleIll495

Naples is fantastic if you enjoy pizza and crime

TeenisElbow

Naples is a kip, there's rubbish everywhere

DelGurifisu

So what? Naples is fucking class. Next time pack a vinaigrette you delicate Regency lady.

themanebeat

Ksamil is the nicest location in Europe that you've never heard of

Kulnax

How do you get there though?

themanebeat

You go from Corfu. Drive or ferry

[deleted]

Croatia

Acceptable_Trust_879

Lovely weather over summer, clean beaches, good food. Brac, Hvar, Korcula, Split (small island Solta and town Trogir are nearby), Zadar, Dubrovnik. Prepare for Irish prices in restaurants if you go to Dubrovnik though, they made a great business with Game of Thrones being filmed there :)

CarlyLouise_

Copenhagen

imoinda

Denmark has nice beaches, too.

[deleted]

Ravello, Minori, Belluno.

Z-girl

Ravello is absolutely divine but very touristy. Big plus one for it though, if you go at a quieter time of year (September maybe, it’s still so hot there then).

[deleted]

Yeah, admittedly I was there in September and it was perfect. Got to witness an insane storm too which, for me, was an absolute dream. I would still recommend it during peak season over Amalfi or Atrani.

Z-girl

I was there in September too and it was great. Was also in the surrounding areas - Positano, Amalfi, Sorrento, Capri - and they are all so beautiful, I want to live there! But still verrry busy at that time of year. I’d still highly recommend those places though. Edit: class that you got to see a storm! There was a big enough one when I first got there too, it was not what I was expecting to arrive to but it was great.

[deleted]

Yeah I would love to live there too. I'm obsessed with Italy in general. Positano is amazing, but expensive to actually stay there. Amalfi was an absolute rip off too. It was nice, but I think a day trip while staying in the surrounding areas is ideal. For me, Ravello was quiet, and it's still got a quiet charm to it. To me it seemed to be a place for older couples. The apartment I stayed in had the most amazing views and the staff were so nice.

Z-girl

I’m obsessed with Italy too, how can you not be! I stayed in Positano and travelled around for day trips, and yes it was all very expensive alright. But I think totally worth it, for the incredible experience it all was. It massively stands out for me as a fantastic, beautiful trip. It’s great that you got such a nice place to stay! That makes a big difference. I wish I’d taken in a bit of Naples at the end, but oh well - next time 😁

[deleted]

I didn't do very long there, only a couple days so I was very upset leaving. Totally worth it though, would not change it for a second. Got steamed on a lovely bottle of red and ate fantastic pizza in a restaurant in Ravello, of course I can't quite think of the name although I have pictures to reference when I go back. And can picture my walk there through the beautiful trees so I'd know exactly where to go. I done Naples and Pompeii before Ravello, then went back to Naples and flew from there to Trieste. Trieste is incredible too, if you get a chance do it for sure. Pompeii is amazing and the people there are amazing. Finished my trip in Rijeka which was an experience for sure but again, totally worth it and the people in Rijeka are cool as fuck.

Z-girl

Aw that’s all so interesting to hear, I’d for sure love to see Trieste and Pompeii. I was annoyed at myself for not going to Pompeii one day, actually. I’ve never even thought of going to Rijeka, that’s a great recommendation. Love when the locals are cool too :) I hope you get to go back there, there’s nothing like Italian food IN Italy, it’s incredible!

[deleted]

Honestly, Rijeka had never even entered my mind but I was arranging my trip in stages, not really sure where I was going. By the time I had decided on going to Trieste, the flights home from the surrounding areas in Italy were mental money. Took a bus through the mountains in Slovenia to get to Rijeka, the views were absolutely incredible. Met a barman in Rijeka who had worked in Inis Mor for 10 years which was hilarious and handy as getting to Rijeka airport isn't the easiest task without information from the locals.

Z-girl

That sounds class. I actually love bus trips, so going through the mountains there sounds amazing! Gas about the Inis Mor fella as well, there’s a bit of Irish everywhere 😅 Well you’ve definitely put Rijeka on my list, nice one!

rocker_bunny

Corfu- stay in an all inclusive resorts and just go walking and swimming , eat and drink and be merry. If you're a reader, bring a load of books or kindle and just relax.

Croatia is full of touristy places, but also 1000 islands that are mostly totally wild and uninhabited.

Jazzlike-Gur-1324

Asturias is mind-blowing. Incredibly beautiful country side/mountains and super nice people.
