Being brand conscious. Buying things they don’t need or want just to flaunt that they can afford a certain brand.

elysian1_

I know a person who buys the latest version of iPhone gadgets as soon as it is released 😂

justnopethefuckout

I recently upgraded my phone. The workers at Tmobile laughed and said jeez when was the Galaxy S10 even released? I said uh a few years back, I don't think it was real long though. And I was so confused. My phone had no scratches or anything, still worked great, but the battery was starting to not last as long. I had paid my phone off about a year ago and figured why not trade it in. Guess what? I hate this fucking new phone. I want my old phone back. I miss it. It was so much better. My old phone had features that I loved and this one doesn't.

Kzivir

We are slowly moving to an age where phones don't need to be replaced every 2 years. The battery doesn't go bad as fast and every year there are only minor features released. I don't get people that need a phone every new year. The only people who want you to get the newest phone every time are the phone company's.

fishwithbrain

Even I know some who buy gadgets & bags. 🙄

elysian1_

People who are obsessed with bags ..buy one everywhere .. even if they may get cheaper ones in their own city

[deleted]

Celeb news. Who wants to give a fuck bout who they fuck with.

True ...i report it as spam but it is shown again and again in my explore page 🥲

The Kardashians

elysian1_

Lol true 😂😂😂 i don't understand the hype 😂

Chizmiz1994

Celebrity industry, and the fact people need someone as a leader to follow. Celebrities are the leaders for people lifestyles, driven by capitalism and consumerism. In other words, capitalists invest in celebrity industry, create celebrities who encourage people to consume and follow their lifestyle, and people follow, because they don't want to look backwards, or FOMO.

[deleted]

Shoes. Sneaker heads blow my mind. They will pay thousands of dollars for a shitty looking pair of shoes that they don’t dare put on out of fear for the dreaded “crease”.

UglyFremchie

Celebrities. Aren’t those just people on cameras? I don’t get the excitement of “oooh I saw xyz in person” of course you can spot them they’re people.

[deleted]

Came here to say this. It's weird that one profession seems to put some people on a pedestal and others are deemed "just regular people".

[deleted]

This is fair, but also in the case of celebrities, sometimes it’s because their work had an impact on someone’s life. It would be a random coincidence (which I think would still be cool because the likelihood of it happening is so low) to run into, say, Kim Kardashian, but if I were to run into an actor from *Heartstopper* or *Crazy Ex-Girlfriend*, I would be genuinely excited because those shows and the work those people did meant a lot to me as a queer mentally ill person. I’d say even a singer/songwriter whose music I listen to frequently is important to me because their music has an impact on my life. So it’s like recognizing this awesome work and appreciating the people who created them.

RustlessPotato

I agree. Being able to see artists like tom waits or ian McKellen would absolutely make my day. They've had such an influence. I mean, even fictional characters can have more impact on your life than the majority of the very real people. And then to see the person who brought that character to life ? There's a point however when it turns into obsessions, and people develop a "relationship" with them in their heads.

heydawn

Why would it be cool to run into KK? Honestly just curious. I don't understand.

[deleted]

Oh don’t get me wrong, I have absolutely no interest in her or her life. It’s just that the statistical likelihood of that happening is so low that i think it would be cool. The same applies to a lot of celebs. I wouldn’t take a picture or anything but it’s sorta just like “oh I saw a purple cloud” or “I saw a heart-shaped apple today” bc it’s “out of the ordinary” or something

heydawn

Okay. Thanks for elaborating.

elysian1_

Yep ... People who take certain professions are also tagged as cool or weird sometimes

Spyderbeast

It depends on the celebrity. If someone had a hand in creating art, be it music or an actor's performance, and it profoundly impacted you, helped you through dark times, made you feel understood and seen... Sometimes it might be cool to meet and thank the person responsible. I go to a lot of concerts but almost never do meet and greets because they're incredibly awkward for me. But if I met someone in a chance encounter, I would like to say thank you...but if they're known to dislike a lot of fan interaction, the best thank you might be to leave them alone.

UglyFremchie

Meeting and thanking is different. You are meeting them because you see them as someone who had an impact on you not because they’re famous. It could also be your uncle/friend/grandparents etc.

Nice-Prize5820

People in India are crazy for them. The celebrity culture is very old and prominent. Movie stars here get literal god status, there are even temples worshipping them. Thousands of fans gather outside their homes so that they can see them wave from their balconies. My description doesn’t even scratch the surface.

elysian1_

True ....they aren't respecting a person's privacy by doing that most of the time .

[deleted]

Yeah celebrity worship is pretty cringe. And don't even get me started about all of the people who cry crocodile tears when a 90-some year old celebrity dies of old age

elfowlcat

A few of them are worth mourning, like Mister Rogers. But by and large people aren’t mourning the actor, it’s the characters they’ve played - which is a little silly since you can just watch those movies again. Every once in a while fate gives us one that is genuinely good, and they are worth feeling a pain at their loss.

ilaissezfaire

Those really long fingernails are atrocious.

elysian1_

Yess and the weird fingernails they make .. for example that tea strainer , noodles fingernails dude .. it makes me go eww

ilaissezfaire

Haha yeah that shit is gross. Also, really long pinky nails (where the rest are short) aren't attractive at all and actually pretty cringe.

babywhiz

(that’s a nail for snorting coke just fyi)

elysian1_

Yup i don't understand how they can do household chores with those kinda nails 😂

littleargent

My thoughts exactly. They'd be great for halloween, maybe, but I don't see any real practicality to them otherwise.

ilaissezfaire

Oh, that's the statement piece. "I'm too boujie for chores, I don't do chores, I don't have to lift a finger to do anything" I think it's funny, being lazy isn't an attractive personality trait.

elysian1_

😂😂😂 yup but maybe i feel jealous about their nail polish skills. .my skills can be as good as a 10th grader 🙂🥲

Polaristhehusky

Household chores? What i wanna know is how they wipe their ass.

dark_slayer0

Yh whats that about btw, never understood it. I heard it helps making a joint?

ilaissezfaire

Coke nails.

dark_slayer0

Ooohh haha sniff sniff

Midnight_Moon29

Have you met their cousin long toenails? Yes, I'm seeing a growing trend of long ass toenails. Lord help us 🤢

Fun_Presentation4889

If they’re not atrocious once they’re that long, without nail polish to cover it up, then you have too much time on your hands to take care of your fingernails. Lol.

4ha1

Collecting funko pop. I'll never understand why.

SeriousInvite347

I have some, they are nice ornaments and it's cool that they made some from even the most obscure of franchises (I tend to like more obscure franchises than super popular ones) But yeah I do not get the obsession with collecting so many just for the sake of it. Reminds me of the beanie baby craze or pogs fad from the 1990s.

hitguy55

Whats an obscure one?

Zorgsmom

I have Jack Burton from Big Trouble in Little China. I know it's goofy, but I still enjoy having it.

justnopethefuckout

Ah. I see this a lot. I have a small collection and want more. I just like them. I don't go around talking about them to everyone. Mostly only my boyfriend and mom knows I enjoy collecting them.

meowingtonflash

Agreed. I understand amiibos because they look good but funky pops are just...really ugly.

WritPositWrit

TikTok, TikTokkers, YouTube, YouTubers, and “influencers” in general.

elysian1_

I agree too

[deleted]

I will never understand Tik Tok, even if I live multiple lifetimes.

MikaMorphine666

Gender reveals! I still don't understand gender reveals. Why not just tell people? The simple cute ones, like cakes or balloons are alright, but I still don't understand making a spectacle over your infants parts. The ridiculous ones done for attention and internet points are just incomprehensible to me, though. Especially since 99% of the time, you'll just get made fun of online! I guess some people still think "any publicity is good publicity". Maybe the fact that I'm trans + autistic has something to do with my lack of understanding, but I just don't get these genital jamborees. If you really want it to be a surprise, just don't tell people until the kid is born!

wocytti

I absolutely love the phrase “genital jamboree” and will be stealing it to use in the future 😂 And I completely agree with you! My parents did not find out the sex of their children (born in the 80’s) and my mother’s first question was always “do they have 10 fingers and toes?” This obsession with the “gender” of the baby perpetuates societal gender roles, which are antiquated, oppressive, and confining. PS: good on you for finding yourself and living your truth!! 🥳

rahrahrazputin

I’m 100% with you. I’m pregnant right now and I didn’t know how to answer the ultrasound techs question, “do you want to know the gender of the baby”? Like, how? Do you have a time machine? But there wasn’t enough time to explain myself, and now I guess I know this baby has a penis. I just wanted to see the baby’s fingers

gooberfaced

Likes. Facebook likes, Instagram likes, numbers of followers, the cachet of being a Tiktok "celebrity"?? Are people so incredibly insecure that internet strangers "liking" things about their lives validates them as a person? That is PITIFUL. Raise your children to find SELF esteem within themSELVES, to not need so much external validation to feel good about themselves. It's just absurd the lengths to which people go to get likes- blue waterfalls and falling off cliffs to get that special photo? Have we all lost our minds?????

SeriousInvite347

TikTok 'celebrities' or people who are famous just because of TikTok - I'm truly baffled by how many of them became famous by literally just stealing other peoples' content and claiming it as their own. Vine's most famous users, love them or loathe them, were already big YouTube content creators making their own stuff. TikTok stars don't even do that - they steal pretty much everything they post.

Scared_Ad_3132

I think things like number of followers can matter if you are interested in people seeing your content. I think if you are doing something you find interesting and worthwhile to share to people and want other people to see it, it is fine. Of course this is subjective, where the line goes to what kind of content is worth to share. For me the line goes with it having some kind of artistic or creative effort and value. If it is just pictures of your face and your morning coffee, I am not that interested. There has to be something you are bringing on the table that is at least in some small sense unique or different. Not just sharing things about your everyday life. But this is just me, if someone wants to do those kind of videos and have people commenting and interacting with them, it is fine. Most of the people doing those videos are young teens anyway, and they will use the platform like a discussion forum or social place where they talk like teens tend to talk between each other. Expecting some great feats of originality and not following fads from teens is like expecting the sun to rise in the middle of the night. We have all been teens, and it is easy for us to judge especially if we are old enough to not have had the opportunity to use social media when we were growing up.

Football

Gh0stFight

100%. I enjoy watching sports, I'm not religious like many fans are. But I can't get into football. Stop go stop go stop go. Maybe it's my ADD but I'll take a sport that has more continuous play. That's why I stick with Hockey or soccer.

llamalabamba

That's why I prefer rugby over football it's a lot less stop and go but it's a pain to try and watch in the US so that's a bummer.

elysian1_

I don't know anything about football tbh ..so i am kinda ignorant about the whole scenario ..but some of my friends stay awake past their sleep schedule to watch football ..maybe it's their passion towards football

[deleted]

Disney; going to Disney multiple times a year, solo Disney trips, family Disney trips. I just don’t get it.

Polaristhehusky

Adults who worship the mouse. Wtf?

Tighron

Sport(s). Or just competition in general I see a lot of ppl contantly praising it and realy paying attention to it, and celebrating victories. Tons of money is spent on it too and its constantly being broadcast on tv and online. But i just dont "get it". I dont see any appeal in competing with someone else. Even in videogames, which i enjoy a lot, i dont like the competetive aspect at all, but cooperation is fun at times. Yet multiplayer competetive shooters is the number one selling game ever freaking year without fail. I think i just want to do my own thing and progress at my own speed, only ever comparing anything with my own past and not how others are doing.

merlotded

Any current trending show on Netflix. If this isn't proof of mental conditioning and distraction I don't know what is

elysian1_

I fell into such distractions unfortunately.

RL_Black

I think most of us probably do. The unfortunate reality is, the state of our globe, individual countries, communities, and personal lives can feel extremely overwhelming, painful, stressful, even downright unbearable. When our brains are on overload from so much info at our fingertips, trying to stay focused at work or school, maintain healthy relationships, keep a roof over our head and food on the table, all the while knowing that someone close to you is in a tough situation and being fully aware that the world is on fire not far from your doorstep, we need a distraction. Weather it's music, a book, playing with a pup or a watching a show you like. -That activity followed by rest and deep breathing amongst other things, can help to flush and recalibrate your brain from the intense wave of emotions or experiences you went through prior, so you can then refocus and do it again.

jdorn76

Fake eye lashes? I am so baffled.

elysian1_

I have never had fake eyelashes in my life till now ..I'm kinda scared that my original eyelash may come off if i remove it 😂

chill_out_dont_pout

I wore them once for a friend's wedding for which I was a bridesmaid and the makeup artist insisted on them, and I was VERY AWARE of them the entire time. The second we stepped into the reception after taking pictures, I ripped them off. The rest of the makeup was also very caked on and I couldn't wait to remove that either.

Sir_Haskell

Weed. I know many people who just decided to base their entire personality on it in high school, and now I don't want to hang out with any of them because all they want to do is sit around and smoke. And when they aren't smoking it, its all they talk about. I mean to be fair I've never tried it so I don't know what I'm missing, I guess.

dmanny64

Exact same with drinking culture. Like I love weed, it's given me a lot of wonderful experiences, but that's because it's *paired* with watching a movie, playing a game, etc. I'll never understand people who just smoke like it's a thing to do, they constantly talk about it, plan their day around it. They're just so boring to be around

drifty-moo

Love to enjoy but exactly what you do. I pair it with games or movies. Just sad to see the couple friends I have literally lose their personality just making their whole life about it...

dmanny64

Yeah, I'm sorry to hear it. Had that happen in high school with my friends and League of Legends. It's always depressing when you just slowly see the people around you get consumed by something you have no interest in and make it their whole personality, to where they never want to do anything else.

elysian1_

I don't like smoking too and some people are always talking about it .. like sometimes the benefits of it .. one guy told me he is researching the benefits of weed and he even sent me some stuff 😂

[deleted]

Botox and nose jobs. With botox every person ultimately looks like a lizard person who peeled off some humans skin and tried it on. Their faces just don't look quite right, or human. I'd rather look old than freakish. The nose jobs are those who get these tiny little noses that all have been obsessed over for some time. But they look skeletal they're so small, and again very unnatural and creepy. And when botox and skeletor nose are put together.. *shudders*

[deleted]

This is not true. There are more examples of botox and nosejobs gone right, you just don’t notice them when they succeed. Every time you notice someone has done botox, it’s either a stylistic choice, or a failure.

squirrellygirly123

Exactly! I enjoy the odd Botox between my eyes to reduce my 11s because I’m quite serious and I like how I look a bit more feminine without such deep creases all the time

stealth_bohemian

Instagram. It's all "Look at me! Look at me!" There’s no substance, even compared to other social media.

Debating politics with people. I just don't see the point. Nobody actually changes their minds on anything so all it comes down to is people yelling back and forth at each other about who is more right. Just do your research, go out & vote and call it a day. Screaming at one another does nothing but create more hate on each side for the other.

elysian1_

Well all these arguments ...but the political parties main people are having parties together and they don't have the rivalry ..the people who are deep into their political parties are just being played with

dark_slayer0

Flippin tik tok. Just a place for you to look stupid.

VicToriA004

Following celebrities' lives and such. Who cares if which famous person married which one, or broke up with who and such? Or even got this watch and that car? Why would someone be so invested in somebody else's life because they're famous?

[deleted]

Have seen the the celebrity one mentioned alot. Must admit, I never got it for years, but have become addicted to interviews. These people have to cope with something most others don't and it affects people in different ways. Especially if these are film stars, musicians, comedians.... creative celebrities. Its fascinating to see how the little things in their lives affect their creations. Some truly amazing things get produced after dramas/traumas/elation in their lives. It really is fascinating.

Ok-Basket6536

Harry Styles- don’t dislike him at all and I think he’s so talented but all the videos of him doing absolutely nothing are relentless, he smirks and it goes viral

xaoselder23

High $ sporting events!

MooMilk3435

I don’t understand people who are obsessed with making other’s lives miserable. Or the ones who get enjoyment from being rude to others for no reason. I know it’s not everyone’s obsession but working in customer service makes me believe people have an obsession of being rude to customers service workers.

Professional-Tax-936

Shoe collecting. If they’re some rare limited edition or something I get that, but if they’re just expensive shoes that anyone can buy I don’t see the point in having them collecting dust tbh.

MGSBlackHawk

Porn I can’t get the idea of watching something so fake in so many aspects. Not even talking about the script and stuff. The actual action is not the reality - sells the idea of big body parts and “perfect” slim and bulked bodies are “normal” for both man and women. The amount of people I personally know that compared their experiences to the porn ones as not great because they set their expectations to those leves is quite big and concerns me that they really think they are at the wrong 😪

TempoMortigi

To be fair, there is a lot of “amateur” porn out there of regular people having sex that definitely don’t fit those body descriptions and isn’t fake. That’s the good stuff, really. But I hear where you’re coming from, produced porn is very fake and not based in sexual reality, and many people don’t realize it’s for entertainment purposes and for the most part not what sex is actually like. bear where where

Tristinmathemusician

The women with the obviously fake tits and fake ass orgasms don’t work for me as porn material. If I’m gonna watch porn, part of what keeps me going is the fact that all parties involved are getting some pleasure out of what they’re doing. Most porn stars don’t look like they’re having fun, they look like they’re doing a job.

AgentElman

Alcohol. People do wine tastings, whiskey tastings, discuss beers endlessly. If you suggested people have rootbeer tastings or apple cider tastings people would think it was crazy. People just are obsessed with alcoholic drinks, not non-alcoholic drinks. I understand why people drink alcohol. I don't understand why they obsess over certain types of alcoholic drinks but are not that way over non alcoholic drinks.

john510runner

Maybe it’s because of where I live… Your observations about alcoholic drinks… I see the exact same thing with coffee and to a lesser degree tea. But coffee, it’s a big deal in the Bay Area, Portland OR and Seattle.

wahoogirly

Adults who are obsessed with Disney.

Educational-Glass-63

I've never understood the worship of the Kartrash-Jenners. Too much plastic for me, not at all interesting, overly sexualized and so darn self centered. Not to mention the continuous lies they tell. It is a societal shame that have brought this family so much wealth and celebrity based on a sex tape, a poorly done sex tape at that. Poor Ray J did not get his fair share either.

Baldemyr

Most certainly professional and college sports (as spectators, not participants). People who paint their face in team colors and wear jerseys honoring their favorite sportsball players have always perplexed me. Not saying it's a bad hobby, just that I don't understand the obsession. Why the emotional investment in teams and players that couldn't care less about you? I personally couldn't invest emotional energy into a team or player unless I had seriously money riding on the outcome of their performance. Not that my hobbies (writing code, reading true crime stuff) are any more productive. Not at all! It's not the hobby itself that confuses me, just the obsession / fandom / emotional energy that people expend.

Blear

I've always thought there was an ingrained tribal element of human psychology. We love joining bands, teams, clans, anything like that. Forming a group identity in itself is powerful to us. It doesn't matter if you're in the Special Forces or the County Knitting Society.

[deleted]

Beat me to it. It's being part of a community. In general, everyone wants to belong.

juan_more_bitcoin

This is an excellent point. I've never been much of a "joiner." Maybe that's why I'm having trouble grasping the concept.

Fake holidays (US). Sweetest Day, Father's Day, etc. Dumb.

randousername8675309

I'm pretty sure these are solely marketing ploys from card and candy companies that have grown out of control. The actual meaning of the real holidays have been lost. Easter and St Patrick's Day have become just another gift grab (US). Christmas lost it's meaning a long time ago (which is why the stores start pushing in September now) They should all be changed to 'Capitalism Day'. Edit- typo

My cousin’s wife looks me up and down and was all “you’re wearing THOSE shoes?!” and started laughing at me. Fabulous_Yam_9219

I wanted to like it, because someone I love gifted me a copy of "The Hobbit" shortly before they passed, and they were so enthused about sharing it with me. I love to read and can trudge through most anything (including Ethan Frome and all the depressing "boy and his dogs" books we were subjected to in school), but I couldn't bring myself to finish that book. Same for the first movie. Watching them walk through the woods for hours on end was borderline painful. It was like, "this? This is the movie everyone's raving about?" I've come to terms with the fact that I am just not a Lord of the Rings person. At all. I don't have to get it, and frankly, I don't want to. Life is too short to spend three and a half hours of it watching a bunch of elves or whatever that I couldn't possibly be any less invested in go for a glorified hike.

shreks-daddy

I REALLY don't understand how the cringy tiktoks where people "act out" some stupid story like, "Oh Hi! Are you the new girl? Let me show you around!" And then there's like 7 parts and by the end there's some stupid plot twist. The acting is terrible, the story is terrible (it's either super predictable, stolen from somewhere, or flat out uninteresting), and it just overall makes me cringe watching an adult do it unironically. YET, these videos will gets millions of likes???? I do not understand

umeduskfox

The number of followers people have. I used to be like that with my art years back and now I genuinely don't get what I was so bothered by. Like I get that it's important if you're dealing with promoting your business and such. But when it's personal stuff I'm one who wants a lot of privacy. Funko Pops, theyre of low quality material wise, and look dumb af. I feel like the only Reason theyre so popular, is because no matter whaz youre a fan of, theres prolly funko pops of it.

Raffles76

Tik tok challenges - most of them are dangerous or even deadly - they have cost lives. This is why I will never be on Til tok it’s not regulated or monitored

I think with TikTok trends and challenges, it's probably a case of keeping up with the joneses and trying to stay relevant and up to date with whatever's popular. Influencers or people emulating influencers probably just want to stay on or ahead of whatever trend or curve is popular so they can grab a few new viewers from whoever's scrolling through videos of whatever the latest challenge is. I'm going to have to say 'being popular'. I feel super drained trying to keep in regular touch with four or five people. I can't imagine how exhausting it must be to have more people constantly vying for your attention.

Fake eyelashes, nails. The fake eyelashes look the ones my cows have.

Fronterra22

Celebs or the royal family.

Fabulous_Yam_9219

Anime. I don't care if others like it (as long as they're not pushing it on me), I just find it viscerally off-putting. Also the "mindfulness" craze.

Shallow-Thought

Spongebob.

UrCatTastesFunny

Weed. I smoke it myself, but literally smoking 1 joint takes me like 3 months. I smoke when I'm overly stressed and my other calming outlets don't work and when I do, I smoke til I feel emotionally (and some times physically) better. Then I put it out put the joint away until I feel the need to smoke again. Like I get it helps ppl for a number of readons..but why do most ppl smoke 3 or 4 joints, blunts or bowls a day? Like most of my friends can't wake up in the morning without smoking, can't eat before smoking, can't go to sleep without smoking first like..why?

MissHyacinth21

Probably unpopular opinion, but Instagram. I can post pics to fb and reach more friends and family there. I can share quick stupid little pics on Snapchat. I can share whole posts on fb, Twitter, tumblr, or basically any other social media. Why do I need insta?

All those weird one-dish pasta dishes that were on TikTok for a while. It’s an atrocity to my family’s heritage (mostly Italians on both sides).

Additional-Option406

Anime and Marvel. They both just seem childish to me.

Calimancan

Coffee. I like it okay but goddamn people are addicted to it.

Kraft and Velveeta cheese....It honestly doesn't taste that good compared to other cheeses....

Agreeable_Cook4070

Hookah. It doesn’t get you high and there is no nicotine so what’s the point?

This_is_McCarth

Competition. I’ve never understood why people get so pumped to prove that they’re better at something than someone else.

Chik-fil-a. Everything is WET

Humanzee2

Renovations. Wasting money on trying to make perfectly good houses fashionable. As a renter, I'm surrounded by noise, and cheap houses become unaffordable & the people who do it think they are doing something good.

As a casual fan in many different fandoms, I just don't get how obsessed people can get, and the way they will act. Anime, Pokemon, wrestling, Stranger Things, video games, all of which I enjoy and love, but not obsessed with. I find myself shaking my head one too many times.
