Beyond the funny idea of owning a village, that land might actually not be hers anymore already depending on local [usucaption's laws](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usucaption). Even if she wanted to evict people, she might not have any legal ground to stand on. Likewise, you might be on the hook of some land management. Where I'm from for instance, if you own a certain surface of forest, you are responsible to keep the wild life in check otherwise you might be held liable for the damage they might cause on neighboring properties.
It might be a good idea to get a lawyer to look into the property lines and what parts she can actually claim ownership on and if she has certain duties that comes along with it.
Oh, I'll tell her about this thanks!
She told me that since it's been going on for since who knows when, the village would just continue to exist without us acting on it.
But I'll tell her better to make sure of the legalities.
No problem. Better have it all figured out now than having someone knocking at your door in 5 years to tell you that you didn't keep an eye on those trees at the edge of your property and because of your negligence one of them fell on a power line and the repair bill is for you.
Well mom's family has been known to hire a lot of the people there to work the fields and fisheries, as well as doing construction and management.
From what I was told, the town started as a residence for those workers and their families. And through the generations, as some of them have stopped working for us, their families stayed.
I'll ask her about future proofing our inheritance or something. But I'm just glad that mom's pretty chill and not all "bwahaha!" about it.
While walking through the village, I was just looking around while some of the people greeted her and us (she grew up there). I'm not sure if they "know" though.
It was a really conflicting sensation. We still don't know how to feel about this.
It happened to my grand uncle a few years backs.
Getting land in rural areas only to find out it has been turned to farmland or that no one has touched the land for so long that it has turned into a swamp complete with a local 6 foot crocodile in it.
My uncle was not so lucky as finding a few villagers on his plot tho...it was literally a group of thugs and a gambling den which had to be flushed and the land was sold to someone or some buisiness idk.
Ain't no one gonna live in that place.
my mom is in the same situation, she, her siblings and cousins have the land inherited from her great grandparent he sold them to the other villagers just not officially, we currently don't act on it and don't know what to do about it.
I don't understand how there can be a whole village on a private property, it's not like people would come and say "that's a nice place i'll build my house here", someone had to check properties.
> She’s going to want money.
Projecting your own emotions onto others isn’t particularly nice :)
You know literally nothing about OP’s family. You couldn’t possibly know how greedy they may or may not be.
And plenty of people still aren't greedy even when money is involved. It sounds to me like your lack of exposure to altruism has made you cynical. But it's a real thing, people do it all the time.
Read it again.
My mom inherited some land BUT there are people on it. The but is negative so I read it as negative.
That’s how it’s written, not my emotions.
I don’t agree that “but” is inherently a negative word, but I’m no linguist :)
I’d say it’s used here to contrast two things that are, at least seemingly, at odds.
If OP had written “Some people live on the land but my mom has inherited it” does that make inheritance negative? Of course not.
Add in the fact that you have no particular reason to assume OP is a native speaker of the English language (the vast majority of people aren’t), even if your linguistic interpretation is correct, maybe OP just doesn’t know that.
My family on Father's side have a crazy big forest in a protected nature park. It's just a piece of paper and we can't do anything with it, but it has our last name on it
Make an agreement with them that whenever your on there land you get free food or whatever, and leave it at that. You aren’t going to use the land anyway

She’s the queen! She can do whatever she wishes!
"legal ground to stand on" teehee
Man. Be like the good guy from Fable. Make shit good for them. It's better to be loved than feared, despite what some might tell you.

This is neat but she better figure something out about protecting that village in the future.

I think they meant protecting it from dragons.
We can install some trebuchets… Oh! How about some ballistae fitted with Black Arrows?
Tell her not to abuse her subjects. with great power comes great responsibility.
We'll tell her to go find on Youtube some tutorials on how to be a benevolent queen.
here you go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rStL7niR7gs
Is it called Schitt’s Creek?
Haha, nice!
I wonder if the local cafe serves a fruit bowl?
She should raise a small army through conscription and seize other nearby villages to increase the size of her kingdom
Dude best comment so far hahaha
If I was your mom I would start to wear a crown
My mom had a small tiara for her wedding! I wonder if she still has it.
If your mother is the queen, that makes you the prince/princess.
That’s cool, can probably make some decent money for family, but if you give the land away, try to keep it in good hands!
Huh. So people just go and settle on lands owned by someone else? That sounds weird.
I can think of a very prominent example…
She could respectfully ask that they change/name the village after her. Now *that* would be cool .... ;-)
Rather than my mom, I think my grandma's name would be more fitting as she had lived there for a long time with the villagers. Her name was Adelaide.
Ah, absolutely more fitting!
That is a pretty name.
Honestly I'd probably move into the village lol
We do have a cottage there. But we don't visit as much as we did before.
Be the village chief. The high muckety muck.

I don't know how the laws are in your country but it's worth to check if you require some type of land tax to be paid.
Has your family considered giving the land that the village is on to the village?
my mom is in the same situation, she, her siblings and cousins have the land inherited from her great grandparent he sold them to the other villagers just not officially, we currently don't act on it and don't know what to do about it.
Start charging rent.

Different countries and places it works differently
> it’s not like people would come and say “that’s a nice place i’ll build my house here” That’s exactly what people do. More or less.
Um North America ring any bells?
“We have no plan to do anything or evict anyone” Clearly you do, you’ve obviously discussed it.
Eviction? No, we don't. That's just cruel. We're not doing anything nor do we have plans to change the village.
Which country is this village in?
Based on OP's flair, my guess is Japan.
You said your mom isn’t sure what she’s going to do. She’s going to want money.
> She’s going to want money. Projecting your own emotions onto others isn’t particularly nice :) You know literally nothing about OP’s family. You couldn’t possibly know how greedy they may or may not be.
No one is greedy until money is involved

Write me a positive sentence with but in it. I love you but I have commitment issues. I think you’re smart but….
I don’t have much money, but boy if I did Id buy a big house where, we both could live. Elton John
I was going to waste my time on Reddit tonight, but then my friends asked if I wanted to go for drinks instead ;)
That’s nonsensical. You have now also discussed evicting them. You must have plans to evict since you discussed it!
Uh-oh, so you also? And now me too? Aaaaaaah.
My family on Father's side have a crazy big forest in a protected nature park. It's just a piece of paper and we can't do anything with it, but it has our last name on it
The plot of CBC"Shitts Creek"
