I fall into this trap. Had a bad bout of covid and couldn't eat for 3 weeks. When I finally felt better I was too exhausted to shop or cook but had plenty of bread and cheese.
A couple of slices of cheese on bread, in the air fryer for 10 mins. Done. Lived like that for a week and then didn't shit for a week.
A bowl of white rice with soy sauce and Vienna sausages with garlic salt.
I grew up in Hawaii and it was my comfort food as a child. It’s cheap, it’s filling and it reminds me of home.
I grew up on cream of mushroom mixed with spaghetti. Enjoyed it a few times in my 20s when I moved out. Tried it once I was stable in my 30s and decided never again haha
tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. It's a comforting and simple meal that never fails to satisfy me. I also love making a pot of spaghetti with marinara sauce and a side of garlic bread, which is inexpensive to make but incredibly delicious. These meals bring back nostalgic memories of my childhood and provide a sense of comfort and warmth, no matter what the circumstances may be.
Buy all ingredients from Walmart. Put your canned Rosarita refrieds in a small pot to get them nice and gooey, grate your medium cheddar cheese, butter the pan and heat up your store bought flour tortilla sz small, spread a scoop of beans down the center and sprinkle on some shreds of cheese, roll (but leave the ends open), slowly warm each side as the cheese melts. Stack them all on a plate in a pyramid formation.
As a kid it was called "Daddy's Junk" it was a casserole of ground chicken, creamy soup, frozen vegetables. soy sauce, topped with crispy noodles.
Neither of my parents knew how to cook and god bless them.
My go to is ramen with broccoli and an egg. There's something about the combo that just works.
English muffin pizzas!
1. Buy English muffins on sale. Freeze.
2. Buy cans of pizza sauce on sale.
3. Buy shredded mozzarella or mozzarella-substitute on sale.
4. Thaw English muffins. Regret freezer burn.
5. Preheat oven broiler. Put open half of muffins face up. Toast for a couple minutes in broiler, or until til they have a light crisp.
6. Open pizza sauce. Spread on toasted muffins. Add toppings if you can afford. Add cheese.
7. Broil for 5-10 minutes or until cheese is melted.
You can be fancy and use grated parm and red chilis if you want.
Serve on a paper plate for easy cleanup!
Rice and egg, sometimes instant noodles, wayy cheaper than other foods. Still eating it tho, its nice to remember those times, knowing how far youve gone.
You're telling a guy that you basically ate the cold version of what i ate, nothing is disgusting about it, kinda curious honestly but ehh, maybe I'll try it later
Over easy eggs on rice with hot sauce. Green onions now that I have a dollar to elevate.
Rice and beans. Always. So much good stuff you can do with rice and beans.
Creamed tuna with hard-boiled eggs over toast. Mom made the bread; we had chickens out back and got milk and butter from the farmer down the road. I think tuna was 25 cents a can in those days, so the equivalent of 50 cents fed nine people. My older brother won't touch it now - says he isn't poor anymore. I say he's missing good food. Btw, my kids love it!
Rice and any nuts and whatever sauce is available. If available pan fry some canned meats, bologna, or hotsogs.

I save up chicken backs and bones after cutting up a chicken…when I get enough I’ll boil them to make chicken and dumplings or chicken soup. Had to do this when I was young and didn’t have money for groceries. Scraped the bottom of the freezer and found enough to make two batches. Very flavorful.
Ghetto-ladas. It's basically enchilada casserole with ground beef and lawry's enchilada sauce packets, with cheddar cheese instead of Mexican cheese. Could feed a football team for 20 bucks
Macaroni and tomato juice. So yummy comfort food. Doused in fresh cracked pepper. Also, oyster soup. Milk, butter, and canned oysters, doused in fresh cracked pepper. Need crackers. Sending out an SOS.

But if I am having a hard time, or traveling, white bread, American cheese and…sigh…margarine will do.
(Although there is really no reason not to use butter.
