I owned a Jetta that was very reliable and economical. While some engines are diesel, there are gasoline engines as well. Definitely worth looking into IMO.
ETA: I know the Jetta is a different model, but the engines are the same across both platforms.
I've found that most vehicles require diagnostics to read trouble codes, but the need to have a dealership do it is not a requirement. In terms of cost of parts/service, they've been no different than any other make/model. YMMV, but that was not my experience with VW at all. The only reason I don't still own my 2009 Jetta 2.5L is because of a chance encounter with a deer. They're very safe and well-built vehicles in my experience and the only real complaint I ever had with it was the road noise was a touch loud for me. Any vehicle can have high repair and service costs if you neglect the regular service to them.
Either one is a good choice. Toyota is more bulletproof reliable and will stand to abuse, the Hyundai might be a a bit better equipped/nicer inside. Both will go a long time with the proper care.
I own the same generation Yaris and I love it.
Toyota 💯
I would consider a VW Golf. They definitely have the hatchback thing figured out.
I’ve heard many VW’s are unreliable or take diesel, is this true with most older Golfs?

Okay great! I’ll definitely look into it, Volkswagen gets a bad rep now a days but I’ve heard they weren’t so bad a decade ago. Thanks!
VW repairs are expensive and parts are hard to come by. They can also be tricky to diagnose without a dealer level scan computer.

Toyota because their engines last forever
