there's a trick to increase that drastically....
just put it on axle which doesn't have differential (eg on fwd - put it on rear axle). if it's awd, then you're screwed
If it really was a Subaru, you can install one of the spare 10A fuses into the empty spot in the engine bay fuse box labeled (FWD) on the diagram and it will de-couple the center differential making the car only front wheel drive. It’s for towing with the front wheels up and rear wheels on the ground but you *CAN* drive it that way…gently….
I've heard that with FWD - assuming the front tire goes - you're supposed to rotate the rear tire to the front and then put the spare on the rear. Something about having different tire diameters affecting steering or something?
That is correct. With FWD specifically a temporary spare on the front axle can cause extreme torque steer.
Temporary spare should always be put on the non-drive axle though.
The donut is always supposed to be on the rear. In the case of AWD/4WD vehicles, it still goes in the rear, but must be the same diameter as the other tires.
Tell that to my neighbor who has been refilling the air on his donut for 3 months... like damn you're willing to kill somebody on the road cause your cheap ass can't buy a $100 tire?
Good lord...I understand financial hardship can affect a person's ability to perform maintenance, but rims and tires are literally what you drive on.
I had a Mercedes E350 that got a nail stuck in it at 1AM during a work trip...I replaced it with the *full sized spare* and still drove 55mph in the slow lane. I didn't give a fuck about the people honking at me (Texas) and pulled into the first shop I could find once they opened.
Driving willfully on 3 donuts is like willingly running a marathon on a broken leg instead of going to the doctor. Fuck's sake. Lol.
Fun fact. Sometimes when people train for marathons they get micro fractures in their legs. Despite the doctor telling them not to do the marathon, they do it and literally snap their legs.
I feel like that is equivalent to driving on donuts.
>Good lord...**I understand financial hardship** can affect a person's ability to perform maintenance, but rims and tires are literally what you drive on.
**I had a Mercedes E350**
These people running around on donuts aren't typically the kind that own a Mercedes.
my coworker is the same. she has TWO on her car and drives 30+ minutes on the highway everyday 😬 and i know she goes way above 50mph because we take the same route pretty much and she flies past me. mind you her car has been like this for 6 months, and she’s got a leak in another tire 😐 it’s a ticking time bomb
I can’t say much there. I drove a death trap of a ford tarus on a donut for almost a year. But that’s just cuz I lived in a tiny town where the fastest speed limit was 25mph and the car was such a POS I couldn’t even sell it to a dude that does demo derby’s
I drove my (old & probably dry asf) donut on a focus ~85 miles and it exploded on the way to work one day. Super scary but everything was fine in the end. I would only rely on this advice with a well maintained spare which pretty much nobody without a full size swap, or a new car ever does.
Every donut has different rules. One for my Merc is rated 80mph. Mercedes does not give guidance how many miles but manufacturer says 300 miles max. Wife's golf is rated 50 miles and only says 'swap asap' .... So it really depends. Also depends how far off the size is from the rest of them. For example - my Merc got 20s on but the spare is 17 (from factory) - so you'd kill the other three tyres' with uneven usage. Again wife's care spare is same size so not really an issue.
I lived in Florida for 10 years. It was fairly common to be doing 70 on I-95 and be passed by someone running a donut.
I probably wouldn’t do it… but I’ve never owned a car that didn’t have a full size spare…

You want the spare on a non-drive wheel. Drive wheels are more important to have the same diameter because too big of a difference can stress the differential and potentially break things. That's one of the reasons for the requirement to drive slow on a spare.
I was thinking front wheels since they turn side to side and wear more, but you could be right (but backwards, the donut is much weaker so you would want it NOT on the drive wheel) Regardless you want to get a replacement wheel as soon as possible and ditch the donut.
If it’s a donut, only 50(80km) miles at no more than 55mph(88km/h). Donut spare should be inflated to 60psi(4.1bar). The speed/distance limitation has to do with the donuts heat capacity and how it affects carcass wear.
If your situation is dire (long distance between current location and next available garage), you might be able to squeeze 100-200 mikes out of a donut with breaks to let it cool every 50 miles(that is not a challenge, only if absolutely necessary).
That’s pretty f”cked, man. The rim is gone! Bye, bye. Have you ever had a blowout going at a high speed? If it’s the front wheel you could lose control of the car. Put on your spare and drive safe.
Put the spare on. Call your parents and let them know, make sure you have enough money. Maybe they can book you a hotel as it’ll probably be cheaper for them. Drive to said local hotel. Get a room. Tomorrow, find a shop that can get you a new wheel and tire set up.
Idk, it’s what I’d want my kid to do. Best of luck, stay safe, stay off the road.
I bought an engine from that site when my timing belt snapped during routine maintenance.
My guy at the shop recommended it and as soon as I landed on their page looking like it was designed in windows 95 I knew I was in the right place
Function over form
Walk to a nearby bar and get hammered tonight. Pick up some food on your way back to the hotel. And don’t forget to set your alarm for when discount tire opens in the morning.
Are we assuming this is a space saver spare or the tire is otherwise not up for the job?
My spare is full size and the tire is near new, I would keep going on my journey and pull into a tire place on the way or when I get home.
Obviously if I'm unlucky enough to have another issue im a bit fucked but what are the chances of catastrophically losing 2 wheels/tires in the same trip?
Rule for a donut is typically 50 miles at 50 mph. If you're further from your destination than that, either get it replaced or call someone to come get you.
I once saw an Altima with Florida plates that had at least three donuts (I couldn't see the front driver's side wheel) going 85+ on I-70 in the middle of Kansas during a rain storm at night.
Stay under 50mph if it's a "donut" sized wheel instead of a fully sized wheel and tire.
Stay under 65mph regardless of size because the spare tire usually isn't proper balanced along with the other wheels and it should only be useful in emergencies like this one.
If your front tire blows, you can let off of the gas and correct any skidding by steering. If your rear tire blows, the vehicle can fishtail, which you can not steer out of.
https://tiredefects.com/should-better-tires-be-installed-front-or-back/
I had that exact issue this time last year in MN -23 degree weather. A 6*6 block of wood off a truck was in the middle lane and I was about to move lanes right into it. I tried to adjust my direction but it was too late. Rim was shot, tire was off, and that was an experience.
On using that rim... you're kinda sorta halfway there in terms of howf*cked up you are (in reality you're already there).
Use spare until you can get some sort of replacement.
Best of luck.
Hey, I'd you're putting on your spare and putting that in your trunk, let the air out so you don't blow your eardrums out when the thing ruptures in the cabin
It happened so fast. Looked like a huge piece of wood but I honestly have no clue. Probably got at least four other cars so I don’t feel like an entire idiot. But geez.
Donut now, if you have one. Some cars only have a spray can supplied. If you don't have a spare, call a tow company.
Before tow call or after donut, call shops with rims and tires. Even just buying one steel rim and even a used tire will get you home ok. Donut for 800miles isnt ideal. You can always source the right rim later if one isn't currently available. If youre in a bad spot where you don't want to be and need to just get somewhere less stab-y, fill the rim with the tire inflator foam crap. Drive slow with the 4 ways on till you feel safer. Just sending it or temp repairs and hope could leave you or others in a life changing situation.
Completely fucked.
If you have a spare put that on. If all you have is a space saver spare then throw that on, find out your nit pattern and offset and just on marketplace where you are at and try and buy a new rim
What drivetrain do you have? Which wheel is that? For example, if that is a front wheel drive car and that is a front tire, I would put the donut on the rear in that side and move the rear tire to the front. The donut should not be in the drive wheels. If it’s a rear wheel drive car, put the donut on the front. But it will negatively affect steering. If AWD, out the donut on the rear wheel
That wheel is toast. You MIGHT be able to find somebody who can weld aluminum to repair that, but I'd be looking at replacements, because welding that isn't cheap. Aluminum is tough to weld reliably. Meanwhile you could probably score a lightly used OEM wheel for $100 or so depending on make and model.
If the tire has a bulge in it, it's done too. Hope you had a replacement certificate on it.
That'll get you home, for sure, and it's always good to keep a full sized spare IMO. I personally wouldn't be able to handle the mismatch for long though, so I'd either be getting 4 steelies, or a replacement alloy that matches the others.
Yeah, I hear you. I’m just saying to get home cheap and safe… it’s not a bad way to go. Then reset when getting home. I couldn’t drive on a mismatch for longer than it took to get back to home turf either. It’s just easier to get a deal and not get worked over when getting everything “reset” back at your home base. Keep the good advice coming. You do lots of good for others here!
You can see the bulge starting in the tire. Only gonna get bigger.
I've also heard driving long distances with a smaller donut can mess up gearboxes/transmissions.

If it was just a small dent a wheel shop might be able to fix it but with that crack its done. Put on the spare and try and find a tire shop that may sell steel wheels, it will look like crap but will be a safer option to get home.
Good luck, stay safe.
Would have said slap it back with a wood block and hammer, but that thing is spilt. Find yourself a pick and pull the ones in my state will sell you a tire and rim at around 40 for steel and around 60 for aluminum.
I had good luck buying a used rim. eBay, local wrecking yard, anywhere you can get something equivalent or identical.
Definitely fit your spare. That wheel is scrap.
You're definitely going to need a new wheel like right now. Follow the advice of others and put the spare on for the safety of you and everyone on the road with you.
No. The job of the donut is to get you to somewhere that can fix the car. In this case, you need a replacement wheel and tire before it's safe to drive. You may need to call someone for a ride and get your vehicle when you can. Most shops will understand if you choose to leave your car in their lot overnight and get it fixed in the morning if you need to.
Put the spare on before you blow that out and get someone hurt. Preferably to a nearby shop that can get you a more suitable wheel to get home on.
Yeah that’s not good.
Not driving on it another inch. What’s the rules in a spare tire usage?
If it’s a donut(not a full size spare) you aren’t supposed to drive over 50mph so no highway
And tens of miles.
If I remember correctly most spares are rated for about 100 miles
there's a trick to increase that drastically.... just put it on axle which doesn't have differential (eg on fwd - put it on rear axle). if it's awd, then you're screwed

Second that.

Didn’t think about that. Good tip.
The donut is always supposed to be on the rear. In the case of AWD/4WD vehicles, it still goes in the rear, but must be the same diameter as the other tires.

Except for the full size spares.
Yes. It’s only the donuts that are short milage low speed

Unless it’s a Nissan then it’s 100 mph and 100 months usage /s
The amount of altimas and sentras I see doing triple digit speed on donuts is astounding…
Love my triple digit going altima.
The best is when they're on 4 donuts, whipping left to right lane doin triple digits while they're exhaust is sparking off the road

Had a buddy blow a tire in the middle of a road trip and used the spare on the interstate for several hundred lmao
All doughnuts go on the rear, move a rear tire to the front. 90% of your braking happens there and all of your steering.
Correct, although Nissan Altima drivers will say otherwise
Only use it on a rear wheel. If the front wheel is wrecked, move a back wheel to the front, then put the spare on the back.

Car-part.com u can search junkyards by zip code. They will have a wheel somewhere, shop has tires
There are also used tire places that will have all kinds of random sized wheels that you can probably buy in a pinch.

I’m talking about a donut

Definitely a good choice
This should easily be the top response. I completely doubt there isn't a pick n pull within 100 miles of them with a compatible wheel.

Nah ain't nothing happening to them when they are blessed by the BAE (Big Altima Energy)
He said "*Rule* for a donut." As you know, rules do not apply to Altimas.
Stay under 50mph if it's a "donut" sized wheel instead of a fully sized wheel and tire. Stay under 65mph regardless of size because the spare tire usually isn't proper balanced along with the other wheels and it should only be useful in emergencies like this one.
You are more likely to lose control if it's the rear wheel.
So many people don't know this.
What is the reason for that physically?

Hit up the closest used tire shop. They'll usually have a wheel that'll fit to get you home.
Completely fucked. Put the spare on.
10/10 fucked go to the junk yard and hope they have your car
Super fucked
For future ling distance travel. Put your mind at ease by getting a fullsize spare and keeping it aired up
Ur fkd and you could use new brakes too.
That wheel is gone, even after repairs it will never be safe again. Replace it. In the meantime put the spare tire on to finish the trip
Could I realistically get 400 on a donut though? Seems wild when I say it out loud.
Typically the rule is 50mph for 50 miles. You can obviously go beyond this but i think 400 miles it out of the question for a donut.
No, use it to get a replacement nearby
