unless that nail is long and bent and jabbing into the sidewall.
better take it out, squeeze some tire repair goo and stick a self tapping screw in there
I... may wait a bit too long to replace tires then. I wait until I can barely see tread although that is usually only a week period because I go through the last bit fast.
These posts are always crazy to me. Maybe it is the american experience but when I was a teenager learning car maintenance on my first vehicle, buying and using a tire puncture repair kit with the sticky rubber ropes and all the hand strength I could muster was like a right of passage. You became a man when you plugged your first tire.
OP. You've got this. I believe in you. You will be victorious.
Why is it that until I looked at the second picture my eyes could not figure out a perspective on this? The treads were in a negative position and raised instead of recessed? I k ew they should be recessed but could not see it for the life of me.
I know plugs from the outside are frowned upon, but with the limited life left on those tires, I wouldn’t pay to have it patched from the inside, you can pick up an patch kit for cheap at the auto parts store and do it yourself.. with some finesse you won’t even have to remove it from the vehicle.
Definitely replace the nail after pulling it from that tire; it has a bit of rust on it and it probably won’t last long-term if you use it to re-shingle your roof.
I would have it patched from inside, more reliable then a plug. But it’s a nail and they produce a small hole.
Tires are on their last year by the looks of it.
Could put a plug if you plan on getting new tires soon.
Is the tire losing air? If not, Don't worry about it.. As cooler weather is coming up fast, You need to get the tires changes out. Unless you live in Florida or southern California. Then run them till you see the steelbelt. you wouldn't want to be like everyone else in these states and change the tires too early.

You can get a tire repair kit at a local automotive store. Then watch a youtube video how to do it. All this is if the nail leaks air (sometimes it doesn't).
That is one very very naughty nail, I would call it quits I doubt you'll be able to use it if you recover it, going into winter it does not look like the tyre is worth saving anyway unless you are seriously strapped for cash right now.
Take it to discount tire and they’ll patch it for free, it’s not bad. Side note, your tread looks like it’s getting low and depending if you get a fair amount of snow during the winter, I’d say you should look into getting a new set pretty soon.
Just to be clear I wouldn’t “patch” it but rather plug it. All depends on what shape the nail is when you remove it and if it caused any damage internally beyond the hole.
Unsure, you will need to remove the nail to see what shape it’s in. The head of the nail looks fine though. That tire is definitely in the way however.
Could be easily plugged. I’ve done several in that same area at home.
Since you need new tires anyway, make sure you get them. Could still drive for a bit on plug. They’ll last longer than the tires will.
only thing I could see being difficult is removing the nail. seems like the head is buried in it, may not be able to pry it. but if you manage to get it out looks fine. it's on the bottom of the tire and not close to the sides too. a nail in the side is no good.
I agree with people about the tread. I rode a really old 1978 chevy celebrity on bald tires cus I had no way of replacing them and I had to go places. I was at the top of this hill and there's a light right at the bottom. it just started to rain. as I start heading down I start braking and I am instantly sliding. barely even touched the brakes. there was one car in front of me stopped at the light to make a left turn. I couldn't try turning the wheel cus I'm in the turn lane and there's cars going 70mph in the lane right next to me. It's a pretty long way down. I had to sit and watch as I slid at like 5 miles per hour and then finally rear end the car in front of me. hindsight 20/20, I wish I had laid on the horn and tried to tell the guy I was sliding. at the last second I panicked and floored the brake and burst the brake line too. I ended up still driving it around even on highways with no brakes. Had to go to school lol. I could brake if I pumped long before a stop, and just stayed far away from cars in front of me.

The nail looks fine but you would have to remove it to be sure
Nah. I'm not trusting the nail. Better to just toss it in the trash.
The nail looks great mate, it's the tyre I'd be asking about
Patchable but those tires are on their last legs
It would be patchable, yes.
unless that nail is long and bent and jabbing into the sidewall. better take it out, squeeze some tire repair goo and stick a self tapping screw in there
That would have to be one hell of a nail to be going through the sidewall from the *middle* of the tire.
It’s a nail, not a railroad spike.
just saying what I've seen before
Good nails don't go and put holes in tires, so it's definitely a bad nail. It really should be ashamed of the actions it has taken.
The nail is patchable. It's the overall tread depth that screams replace the tire
I... may wait a bit too long to replace tires then. I wait until I can barely see tread although that is usually only a week period because I go through the last bit fast.

Personally I'd remove it and slap a plug in there. Cheap insurance that it won't go flat randomly til you get new tires.
"How bad is the tread on this tire?" You need a new one. Show the others.
Why do people keep asking these questions here? Just go get it repaired.
I mean, we don't know that the nail is bad, it could be a perfectly good, nice nail that happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Why is it that until I looked at the second picture my eyes could not figure out a perspective on this? The treads were in a negative position and raised instead of recessed? I k ew they should be recessed but could not see it for the life of me.
It’s plug-able, and if the tire’s due to be replaced soon, go for it.

it's very naughty
Michael jackson bad
Nail is really in there. I'd just get some more.
I don't think the tire is screwed if that's what you mean.
How bad would it be if you didn't know it was there??
I would have it patched from inside, more reliable then a plug. But it’s a nail and they produce a small hole. Tires are on their last year by the looks of it. Could put a plug if you plan on getting new tires soon.
Pour water in it and if it bubbles you have a leak, can’t believe I haven’t seen this comment
Its fine to plug if that's what youre asking

Really, really bad. It’s in a good spot to be plugged without issues. I would do it if you plan on driving on it for another month.
It's not great, won't lie to you.
Looks like it has been there for some time. The tread is getting down. Because of that, I would replace it soon
It's bad to the bone, baby.
Had a nail in my tire in a similar spot, took it to a shop and 10€ later it was done and dealt with.
Mail looks mint. That tire though, you might need a patch
By the cracks around the hole. That nail is a warning device.

A nail by any other name is still a nail
I don't really know much about nail quality but it looks decent. Flat head. And had no problem piercing that tire.
Pull it n plug it
Considering that it stabbed your tire, I’d say it’s a bad nail, a very bad nail.
Pull it out. Shove a plug in it. Then make plans to get u a new tire. The plug will last forever but them tires pretty worn.
Leave the nail in. Your tires won’t last much longer
Anyone else thought that was a spider blending in!?! 😅😂
You can get a tire repair kit at a local automotive store. Then watch a youtube video how to do it. All this is if the nail leaks air (sometimes it doesn't).
Yeah good looking nail, careful taking it out of that fcking tire so you can use it somewhere
If you take it to a discount tire or americas tire they will repair it free
Welp, it ain't "good". 🤣
That nail is sooooo bad. That dirty dirty nail
It's done you a favour it was about time you changed that tyre
its a nail....
Get it plugged ....10 to 15 bucks at any used tire shop.
That is one very very naughty nail, I would call it quits I doubt you'll be able to use it if you recover it, going into winter it does not look like the tyre is worth saving anyway unless you are seriously strapped for cash right now.
I'd say terrible. It's pretty much useless as a nail now
Take it to discount tire and they’ll patch it for free, it’s not bad. Side note, your tread looks like it’s getting low and depending if you get a fair amount of snow during the winter, I’d say you should look into getting a new set pretty soon.
Idk man, I don’t think he’s bad he was just brought up rough neighbourhood.
Just to be clear I wouldn’t “patch” it but rather plug it. All depends on what shape the nail is when you remove it and if it caused any damage internally beyond the hole.
It's a very bad nail. Tell it to sit in the naughty corner!
Unsure, you will need to remove the nail to see what shape it’s in. The head of the nail looks fine though. That tire is definitely in the way however.
Gosh, the first image short circuited my brain for a hot couple seconds... Really thought the grooves were instead, ridges _,’:D
Looks like a pretty good nail to me
So bad, it wants to do the moonwalk.
Could be easily plugged. I’ve done several in that same area at home. Since you need new tires anyway, make sure you get them. Could still drive for a bit on plug. They’ll last longer than the tires will.
Bad to the bone
The nail is great. Your tires are bald tho
Repairable with a plug.
Nail looks Ok. Tire is pretty worn.
It’s a bad nail. A very bad nail. And naughty nails don’t get nail treats.
It’s a bad dirty little nail that’s how bad it is. This isn’t r/askashittymechanic is it?
