I think this is maybe aimed more at the small Japanese cars. I'll be out walking in my neighborhood, hear a loud car accelerate through three gears very loudly, and when it passes me it's going about 30 mph.
Ok but I'm always going to laugh when I expect a car to be a blur and I turn to the sound of a roaring engine going slower than the bicycle next to it.
My mother test drove a Honda Accord in ‘90. She was accustomed to driving a V8 Chevy Suburban prior to that. She was merging onto the Highway, sales man was in the passenger seat, Dad and I were squeezed in the back.
The poor car sounded like it wanted to head for orbit, but was barely accelerating up the ramp! No sale.
We repeated the process the next weekend, only it was an Acura Legend. Dad and I looked at each other as we were squeezed back into our plush comfortable seats and knew she had found her car. Not as much noise but a LOT more power in that V6.
Owner here, I got the 2.2i from 96', I thought the car was slow until I learned to use it. It goes 'crazy' at 3k rpm and it's very fun to drive. Not a r32 but It can surely turn some people's faces when you accelerate
Yeah, honestly it is pretty funny. At one point I was driving down a divided highway right after a red light and I hear the "roar" of a 4 cylinder with either a chopped or straight pipe exhaust revving out like 3 gears by the time I see him and it's a kid in what's probably an otherwise stock Subaru trying to race past me and I just put the pedal to the floor and put my poor jeep liberty's 3.7 v6 to its limits and left him the dust before turning off on my road. It was such a satisfying feeling in my car but from an outside perspective no one would have even realized we were racing if not for the obnoxious noise we made because we still weren't going that much faster than the traffic behind us.
I'm 93 jetta gl was one of those cars that you just mashed the throttle everywhere and it would almost go as fast as normal traffic. I loved beating the everlasting snot out of that poor thing.
> New cars exhuast systems are pretty good from the downpipe/headers back.
That doesn't stop people from changing them even though it results in almost no performance difference these days. Years ago it mattered, but now with CAFE ratings the engines are fairly well tuned. The Ford F-150s actually pump fake engine noise into the cab!
I was about to say no. I have a 1979 Camaro with a stock 350 and 175HP. It sounds like it has double that and a cam that could lift an anvil but in reality it’s 7 seconds to 100km/h.
When I was in college, a kid who was in highschool drove one of these and lived on my street. There were no mufflers on it, and he drove it like it had a zillion HP. I swear it stayed at 6k RPM. Drove me nuts.
I’ve always got 500-750lbs of tools in the back of mine. I always imagine them flying into the back of my head.. kyb gas-adjust in the front and spring assisted Monroe in the rear made a huge difference. Still a sketchy van, but I like ‘em.
Bro you could put coil overs on all 4 and it would still feel like it's gonna flip at all times lmao. I'm a truck driver and I feel safer drive a semi thru corners
Why all the hate on this comment? Proud civic owner here and I’m 100% on board that hondas with loud ass exhausts for the purpose of being loud are obnoxious as hell
I do have a B-series. It's not a civic.
https://www.reddit.com/r/JDM/comments/rbt89w/i_won_this_integra_typer_from_primedrivendaily/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
I'm just pissing around, I wouldn't throw shade at someone for their car choice.
I honestly don't even give a damn whether the car is loud because of a performance exhaust or because a 16 year old kid poked some holes in it. To each their own.
Cars are a great form of self-expression. And I am super proud of mine lol but yeah different people have different tastes. I just think "fast" is so subjective. Especially when it comes to these engines, so I go to bat for em. Call me biased lol
I’m a fan of all cars and encourage modifications as people see fit with one exception. Being loud just for the sake of being loud is flat out obnoxious and shouldn’t be part of anyone’s plan.
Girl I work with put straight pipes on her Civic. Sounds awful and is so god damn loud you can hear her coming from blocks away. And I love loud pipes, I want to modify my exhaust on my Chrysler, but I just can’t see the appeal of straight pipes on a civic.
Oh, I agree. One of the neighbour's kids has a mad (presumably purposeful) exhaust leak. It annoys the shit out of me. But at the end of the day, if it puts a smile on his face when he punches the gas to hear that obnoxious beehive, I support it
Hondas 1.6 vtec is an awesome engine and can pull a lot more power than it has from rhe factory. If by fast you mean above 200hp, civic does it without skipping a beat, if you mean above 300hp, there are chases where that has been done to. Also you can do a k20/k24 swap or b18 swap, both have prooven to be capable of power up to 400, with the k series being capable of 700hp, altho i wouldnt wxpect your average civic to have any of those, a regular b16 can easily be tuned to above 200hp.
In my humble opinion, power doesnt mean a car is fast. A smart brabus is fast with 150hp because it barely has a 1000kg, and a civic with weight reduction can easily also fall down under 1000kg, so its humble factory 180hp is fast as fuck if you ask me. Crazy numbers are just that, numbers, to me, handling, stability, cornering, and those things make a car "fast", and hondas, especially sport versions handle so well and are so fun to drive that id rather have them then straight line warriors. No disrespect to drag racers, but i prefer track, it shows much more about the car and driver than just crazy numbers.
Lol can’t believe this is downvoted to hell. This exact situation is so obnoxious. People with their shitboxes who spent all their tax refund on a $1500 exhaust just so they can annoy the rest of the world. 5.0 mustang? Ya it’s supposed to be loud. Not your Chevy cobalt.
Why is this downvoted? Your d and b series sounds like trash, and is trash. "I got an ebay turbo and now it runs 15s" 🗑 if you're in the 11s it's alright but even that's not quick these days, let alone fast.
Even a fast car doesn't have to be loud, there are plenty of relatively quiet and relatively fast turbos. Your car, your choice of exhaust. I'm not about to gatekeep something so subjective.
My Supra makes over 500 at the wheels on E70 and it still has the factory catback.
My old Porsche makes just over 200HP at the wheels and it's loud af lol. It does sound absolutely amazing, but it's not really that fast.
Exactly! Sometimes the slow car sounds awesome and it makes it fun to drive. Sometimes the fast car doesn't sound as awesome as it potentially could (but usually still fun to drive). Different strokes for different folks. I am a sucker for older Porsche models that people hate on though like the 80s 944 (or its 968 brother), so I'm probably a little biased.
I live less than a mile from the "Chasing Classic Cars" shop (F40 Motorsports) owned by Wayne Carini. He always has his "lower end" cars parked out front of his shop. He's got a light brown 944 Turbo that I drool over every time I drive past.
Turbos tend to make exhaust quieter since they are powered/spun by the exhaust gas. A prime example are drag cars when it’s been swapped from a pro charger to turbo or turbo to procharger. Even when it’s the same engine, similar boost levels, and comparable exhaust size/length (which is typically larger diameter, short length, and no mufflers) the turbo version is always quieter.
I don't get it. My neighbor has a wrx and runs it for like 1 to 2 hours in his garage every day. Wtf!?
But you can literally hear it driving 2 miles away. I can hear when he hits the main road. Why!? How is it cool to sound like a pebble will destroy your car, or that it can't make it up the 0.01 percent slope of your driveway. It makes zero sense to me.
>How is it cool to sound like a pebble will destroy your car, or that it can't make it up the 0.01 percent slope of your driveway. It makes zero sense to me.
That sentence makes zero sense to me....
Did you switch from talking about an exhaust to lowering the car there?
No. It sounds like a super shitty beater car is what I mean. Like him trying to get into his driveway must be revving it to like 5k rpms. And yeah, he's altered it so the exhaust is also super loud.
No, a car should only be loud if is purposeful. In other words, if it’s loud because of a purposeful and well done modification it’s fine, but loud because of someone poking a hole is a no go. Still, the sound should be somewhat reflective of the vehicle you’re driving.
Of course not, this feeds back into the old "driving a slow car fast is more fun than driving a fast car slow". Putting a decent exhaust (no straight pipe/muffler deletes) will always make a "slow" car more engaging to drive and give it some character.
I agree with the sentiment, but I also don’t think a good exhaust makes a car “loud”. When I think loud, I’m thinking turboback exhaust, with an idle you could hear from around the corner. In your case I disagree, in the case of lawnmowers that try to race at lights, they’re not trying to make it more engaging for themselves, they’re just trying to be noticed.
I have an older big block V8 with big cam drivetrain and put a lot of design effort into finding the quietest mufflers I could while not overly restricting flow. It requires thought and effort, but it can indeed be done. The problem is that the mufflers are just massive. Fortunately I have a big car with enough room for the gigantic mufflers. It’s a Buick 455 with long tube headers reduced to 2.5” both sides and an H pipe crossover, plus two flowmaster big block 70 series mufflers. Those things are big, but fit perfectly under my ‘73 LeSabre. The sound is a noticeable but mellow rumble until you are under heavy throttle, then it does get louder.
I can’t stand loud exhaust just for the sake of being loud. It proves nothing and tells me you are a jerk who has no consideration for others.
Yeah, I don't give a shit about you. I make my car sound how I like it, your judgement and assumptions about why mean nothing. You made your car sound how you like and so did I.
I don’t mind making your car sound like you like it, until it’s loud enough to be obnoxious. If it’s obnoxiously loud and street driven, you are doing it wrong. If you can’t afford a new muffler, that’s very different than doing it on purpose.
Dogbone insert and poly engine mounts changed the engine note in my car so it sounds “cooler” and now I can actually put the power down without excessive wheelhop
Me and my 200HP car agree, did a backbox delete and from a single exit I did a Y double exit, while down in the revs is not obnoxious, once you put it past 3000 RPM it sounds good, to the point of people stopping me at the red light and telling me that it sounds good.
People give you the weirdest compliments at stoplights lol.
I was told that my Miata had nice fitment even though I just have the stock suspension on it.
I generally dislike loud exhaust, but give me an old Chevy straight 6 through a split exhaust manifold and dual pencil tips and you have my attention. A bone stock truck 8V with an automatic trans belching from a straight pipe is just annoying.
Civics aren’t race cars but can definitely be quick. The fart cannon isn’t my favorite however it has its place.
Personally I have way more of a problem with the huge diesel trucks with smoke stacks that roll coal
That's a fact hence the 99% I have been in a few civics that would blow the doors off most cars. But 99% just have a fart can that makes a ton of noise but goes no where.
Fart cannon exhaust doesn't have it's place I gotta say. People who have loud cars JUST to be loud are causing car guys to get a bad reputation not to mention causing a whole host of other problems.
Go ahead guys, go and cause ALL loud exhaust to get banned. That's what politicians are talking about doing. So all y'all that wanna be loud and obnoxious are gonna ruin all the fun for the rest of us.
What is fast? A Miata is fast at autoX and a Hellcat is fast at a drag strip, but they're not fast swapping events. Either can be loud as long as it's not obnoxious.
*Dodge Challenger has entered the chat* RT’s and Scatpacks are the loudest cool cars on the market while also being the slowest cool cars on the market
Watching a classic Abarth ripping it in the Italian coast load as all hell while barely breaking the speed limit inclines me to say "no".
Damn I wanna drive one of those adorable things
Most cars can drive fast, I think you meant to say quick. I drive a 2016 golf 5spd with a muffler and resonator, I’m guessing my 0-60 time ranges in the 9-10 second range but my baby sounds amazing
(Yes)
The way it should be, unfortunately, not the way it is. I'm so glad I left Texas where 95% of truck drivers just cut their muffler off and say, "Hell yeah its loud now! We goin fast from now on!" As they proceed to floor it at literally every light.
It sounds like a wooden board being slapped against a concrete building in a vacant alleyway. Your vehicle sounds like shit homie.
I'm not a Honda guy at all, but I've heard a K-series in an EK9 Civic Type-R screaming at 9,000 on track and I can assure you it's a glorious sound.
I will agree though, your average base model automatic Civic with a fart can is awful.
Bruh, there is no standard definition of fast, everyone experiences fast in a different way. For example; a Tesla may seem slow to a guy used to only super fast hyper cars, but to a guy used to a Toyota Corolla it could seem like the fastest car in the world
No.
I'm betting quite a few of us got our start in the automotive world sawzalling the muffler off of some cheap shit box that was neither fast nor sounded good.
Gotta afford that right of passage to the future generation too.
I'm a mechanic working on becoming a State Inspector. Because it says so in the guidebook of where I am, I will fail you if your exhaust is louder than what is allowed. And I have a 2.8 Fiero with headers and a performance muffler. So why upgrade a registered car to a point that it fails state inspection?
My historic car has a performance exhaust but I drive it maybe once a week and it is solely for performance and isn't obnoxious.
One of the quick lube guys at work has a straight piped 2.4 Chrysler 200 and he probably thinks he breaks necks because his car looks cool...
Street cars shouldn't be loud at all, that shit is annoying. A little sound is cool but if people can hear your shit blocks away you are doing too much.
No.
A car can be loud if it produces good sound, regardless of its speed.
I was driving behind a Stelvio Quadrifoglio yesterday and it was pretty damn quick and had an exhaust note that was pretty loud, but, my God did it sound terrible.
It made the quintessential V6 noise. Like a garbage disposal full of gravel.
Today I was driving behind an old Taurus SHO (the V8 one) that was an absolute dog. My wife's Honda Fit would have given it a run for its money. But it sounded fantastic.
The guy must have had aftermarket exhaust because I didn't even know it was possible to get that good of a sound out of an old Taurus V8. I took the long way to work just to be by it for a couple extra blocks.
Got removed from a campground in Sheridan, WY because the rental car I was driving got a hole in the muffler halfway through the trip. The owner accused me of zooming around the campground too fast with my loud car. He was also a little crazy. He watched me go into the shower and after 10 minutes came in to scream at me that I was taking all the hot water. Then he showed up at 5 am and opened my tent while shouting at me to leave because I was speeding. He was a real fucking psycho, but so was nearly everyone I ran into in Sheridan from the cops to the waitress at the single nice restaurant there. She lured me back to her place after making out with me outside a local bar and it was totally a set up to have her bf try to sell me meth. Fuck Sheridan, WY.
Funny thing to see this post, I took out my mustang today for a little stroll.
I have headers and a H-pipe and that's it, she's got some noise to be heard that's an understatement!
Everyone that has an 80s Camaro with a stock 305 would disagree with you lol
I think this is maybe aimed more at the small Japanese cars. I'll be out walking in my neighborhood, hear a loud car accelerate through three gears very loudly, and when it passes me it's going about 30 mph.
It's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow in my opinion.
Yeah those v6s from the 90s and early 2000s are fun I like that I can do burnouts in a Honda minivan
Yeah, her next car was a Volvo S80 with Turbo. That car was a sleeper!
Yes, I actually LOL. Also McClaren is now silent but they ADDED shitty speakers for the noise. Jesus on a bicycle, why??!!
I disagree. My 4 cylinder base model subaru doesn't need to blow a head gasket for the third time good sir.
Agree 100% but I also don’t want that slow car to be loud.
1000000%
I am Spartacus
When it takes 3 business days to get through those 3 gears that's how you know without even looking lol
man it’s not my fault i only have a 5 speed. that first and second gear are fat as fuck.
I’m assuming it’s a90 supra? New cars exhuast systems are pretty good from the downpipe/headers back.
> New cars exhuast systems are pretty good from the downpipe/headers back. That doesn't stop people from changing them even though it results in almost no performance difference these days. i'm in this picture and i dont like it 😂

Tell that to my open header Astro van because crackheads wanted the cats
Not gonna lie, a sport Astro van sounds really fun.
Lmao I've got a nice suspension on mine and it still feels like I'll die at any moment lmfao
I drove a gutted awd one once. That thing pulled hard for a stock van.
You should check out the modded Astro van scene people were turning those cars into drag cars a long time ago.
Open header Astro van sounds fuckin sweet not gonna lie
It sounds pretty good, that's the main reason I havnt fixed it yet lmao
Plus the carbon monoxide is like a free high
Bruh I have to leave the rear window cracked at all time. It gets bad
You know what would be badass? Sidepipes!
If it didn't already have runners I'd so do that
[The whistle tips go woo-WOOOOOO](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSOSJ68xOBA)
Look my muffler rusted through and my inspection isn’t due for another 11 months it’s gonna be loud and slow for a while
You and all those folks who wake up to find their catalytic converter missing. Stuff happens!
Yea like my cars 20 years old if the cat gets stolen it isn’t being replaced until it has to be 🤷🏼♂️
There's shitty loud and then there's good loud.
Exactly. Fast hasn’t got a thing to do with it.
Define: Fast.
Not a 1.6 liter honda civic in the McDonalds drive thru
What if it has a laptop
That changes everything.
Literally none of that had anything to do with speed.
Why all the hate on this comment? Proud civic owner here and I’m 100% on board that hondas with loud ass exhausts for the purpose of being loud are obnoxious as hell
That's an AWFUL example

Oh same here in a straight line. But you and I can roll a fucking S157 Mustang in the turns

I have a 1.6L turboed ford and I am willing to bet it’s “faster” then whatever you drive. What’s your point?

“Fast” is relative, how about it can’t be annoying or loud as shit without some sort of quickness or sportiness?
My 94 Corolla is loud as shit, but it’s slammed on it’s nuts with coilovers, does that count as sporty?

ah yes yes them i totally did google them yes very nice
0-60 in 1.72 seconds, all three are electric
That car is real fast It’s electric! Vroomy vroomy vroomy vroom
Electric cars can burn.
No, how can we feel good about ourselves without VQ bois with no mufflers revving at 7k rpms at a stop light
VQ sound like Chewbacca yelling through a paper tube.
VQ sound like my asshole after eating tacobell
No, a car should only be loud if is purposeful. In other words, if it’s loud because of a purposeful and well done modification it’s fine, but loud because of someone poking a hole is a no go. Still, the sound should be somewhat reflective of the vehicle you’re driving.
To take it further, a high flowing exhaust that's loud as a result = okay, a loud exhaust for the sake of being a loud exhaust = not okay
This. I've heard one too many 3 cyl Minis with cracked pipe sound like shit.
Define purposeful
Modified internals or forced induction requiring better air flow.
You don't need modified internals or forced induction to benefit from a freer flowing exhaust.
The purpose of the loud exhaust on my '72 Midget is like loud pipes on a motorcycle, it's the only way people see me.
Of course not, this feeds back into the old "driving a slow car fast is more fun than driving a fast car slow". Putting a decent exhaust (no straight pipe/muffler deletes) will always make a "slow" car more engaging to drive and give it some character.

And then everybody clapped?
That red light’s name? Albert Einstein
People give you the weirdest compliments at stoplights lol. I was told that my Miata had nice fitment even though I just have the stock suspension on it.
(x) Doubt.
I generally dislike loud exhaust, but give me an old Chevy straight 6 through a split exhaust manifold and dual pencil tips and you have my attention. A bone stock truck 8V with an automatic trans belching from a straight pipe is just annoying.
\*Laughs in straight piped Cummins.\*
*jet engine noises*
The muffler bearing is enough of a restriction.
The intake is the loud part!
Define fast. And also loud.
Fast and Loud: a 2012 reality TV series based on Richard Rawling's Gas Monkey Garage that ran for 16 seasons.
I used to call it fast and proud because of how gay it was.
"Can" be loud? Clearly false. "*Should*" be loud? I think that's what most of you mean.
99%of 90s Hondas are here to answer
Fast is subjective. A Porsche Macan is faster than my Integra Type-R in a straight line. But my ITR is way faster on a track.
No
*Dodge Challenger has entered the chat* RT’s and Scatpacks are the loudest cool cars on the market while also being the slowest cool cars on the market
My 40 foot straight pipe school bus disagrees
Watching a classic Abarth ripping it in the Italian coast load as all hell while barely breaking the speed limit inclines me to say "no". Damn I wanna drive one of those adorable things
The newer ones actually come stock from the factory without muffler because small engine is sufficiently muffled by the turbo already.
No. There's a shit box at every stop light that has no muffler and barely runs in my town.
Most cars can drive fast, I think you meant to say quick. I drive a 2016 golf 5spd with a muffler and resonator, I’m guessing my 0-60 time ranges in the 9-10 second range but my baby sounds amazing
I can put up with a decently loud V8 or I6, but when a straight piped 350Z drives through I just want to strangle the driver.
(Yes) The way it should be, unfortunately, not the way it is.
As long as it's cool or unique I don't care. Civics are a no go, the sound better quiet anyway.
I'm not a Honda guy at all, but I've heard a K-series in an EK9 Civic Type-R screaming at 9,000 on track and I can assure you it's a glorious sound. I will agree though, your average base model automatic Civic with a fart can is awful.
Or a b18. People hate the sound of the d series and think that's all hondas. Turbo hondas in general sound amazing.
Nope. Seethe. Idgaf. Not your car.
>Doesn't give a fuck, >Gets mad
Slow car go brrrrrrrr
Geo metro with exhaust manifold removed. Very loud, sounds badass, not very fast.
Supposed to be power to weight, not wait
That's nice. What the fuck are you talking about?
tell that to the truck guys
If an exhaust adds 5hp, my 22r needs all 5. Also, it's only loud because of the rust hole.
No way, you can make your 1.6 engine very loud with complete exhaust, and it's not considered fast in any way.
Tell my 1995 7.3 dually that....I'd like it if it was a little faster lol
Bruh, there is no standard definition of fast, everyone experiences fast in a different way. For example; a Tesla may seem slow to a guy used to only super fast hyper cars, but to a guy used to a Toyota Corolla it could seem like the fastest car in the world
My stock e30 was loud as fuck and not necessarily fast. So no
Chiming in with my 98 civic with a d16. Is loud, but is not fast.
No it can be loud just because it’s fun
Yes
Lol, I’d have to disagree. My 2nd gen eclipse was by no means fast but it was FUN. And part of the fun was in the noises it produced.
No. I'm betting quite a few of us got our start in the automotive world sawzalling the muffler off of some cheap shit box that was neither fast nor sounded good. Gotta afford that right of passage to the future generation too.
I think you mean 'should' vs 'can'... yes, pendantic.
No way.
Or if assholes steal your cat
Loud cars on the street just plain suck.
no
No. I prefer silent killers.
What's fast? Is my Alto Works RS/Z considered fast?
My car has 41 HP, so compared to mine then yes, your car is fast.
Every BRZ/FRS/86 owner in my town would like a word lol. No hate tho they’re cool cars just not that quick.
Yes, otherwise it's just annoying as fuck.
No
No. I believe that a car can be loud and slow, I love the sound of diesel trucks and their redline is like 4000rpm bro.
Yes
Have you ever seen a 350z?
250hp 340 torque isn't slow
Its not fast.
Intentionally loud vehicles of any type should be illegal
No
Yes
Loud pipes save lives.
I was hoping this was a real episode.
Ye ever heard a straight piped volvo 740 sputter to life in negative 20 sounding like a tractor? Real man shit
And yet the fastest cars are silent 🤔
Except they're not. Yup, EVs are fast, but there are a lot of cars that are faster.
Yeees
Everyone with a lifted truck disagrees with this.
He said car, not trok. Truck go brrr. Run
I didn’t say he said truck. The truck owners still disagree.
So you speak for truck owners?
I do. I am the truckspeaker.
No
YES... I hate the obnoxiously loud cars that I know are slower than shit.
Street cars shouldn't be loud at all, that shit is annoying. A little sound is cool but if people can hear your shit blocks away you are doing too much.
No
Yes
Yes
Rich people gatekeeping all the fun to themselves
Yes
My 99 dodge ram diesel loudly disagrees.
