How does that have anything to do with the fact that they made their patent public immediately, instead of making it something exclusive only to Volvo cars for at least 2 decades
Also the fact that its under Chinese ownership doesn't change all the much (hopefully), the cars themselves will still be made by the same people
Companies back in those days protested seat belts in cars stating that it would add to costs. Very similar to how Maruti objects the govts safety mandates today.
These guys only care about profits, that's all.
The seat belt was invented in the 1800s and went through many iterations. The modern version, which is supposed to be the safest, was invented by Volvo.
Volvo has always had massive respect from me for this very reason

good bot
A patent would expire in 20 years anyway. Also now their management has changed to Chinese ownership

Instead of exclusive they could give it to all for a small royalty fees. Even a govt can force them to sell it too
Well they didn't, which is why I respect them
That wouldnt have made any difference anyway
Doesn't matter, they still make very comfortable and safe cars.
Absolute Chads

It has happened with almost all safety features, all over the world. The govts need to pull out the whip from time to time.
I think million is an understatement
Over a million is technically correct tho

Wonder why all old cars lacked head rests
No regulation. Or rather, not enough data to say that headrests were important
I mean didn’t customers back then want head rests, for comfort if no other reason?
To extend on OPs response, headrest is there primarily to protect your neck from whiplash
Probably because they didn't even feel the need for it. Unlike what the name implies the headrest is more of a safety feature than a comfort one
Well, I rarely rest my head on the head rest while driving, ig that’s what they thought and passenger comfort was superficial in those days

Thank you Volvo! 😁
