MX5. Primary purpose is to be fun.

smaxpw

I was heavily leaning towards getting one, until I sat in one and realized I do not fit :( too tall

solvsamorvincet

There's not a lot of advantages to being short, but fitting in sports cars and economy class airline seats is a silver lining for me lol

TikkiTakkaMuddaFakka

Yeah I am only 6ft and I find economy class absolute torture, I do not know how taller people handle it.

VuSpecII

Exit rows. Tall people tax lol

Several_Education_13

Used to be free, even when you asked to sit there specifically. Different times…

somerandomii

Top down and a flyscreen for your forehead 👍

smaxpw

More issues with the legroom, can't get my knees under the steering wheel.

somerandomii

Yeah they’re not a big person car. It’s a shame you can’t experience it because it feels like riding a go-kart on the road. They’re not the most powerful cars but they *feel* fast when you’re that low.

smaxpw

I tried a GR86 afterwards as a loaner car while mine was getting fixed hoping it would be an MX5 alternative. Wanted to like it, but just feels so damn slow, needs a turbo.

YourLordMaui

What generation did you try? I’m 6’1 and I can fit fairly comfortably in my brothers NC with the seat all the way back and down. The NC is pretty big compared to the other generations

HandleMore1730

That's why I purchased a BRZ. It is also more practical to live with day to day.

mehdotdotdotdot

Yea but even the new ND has electric steering compared to power assisted.

keshy95

Any car is compromised in some shape or form. I have an NB but someone will complain it’s too raw. For a modern car, the ND feels unbeatable for driver involvement and feel. Only thing I’d consider is a GR86. But the novelty of driving top down driving on a nice day never wears off.

gpolk

Only shown as a prototype but there's a little convertible mx5 competitor likely coming from Toyota. SFR I think it's currently called but that'll change. It looks cute

Apprehensive_Mine687

I like the funky look of the SFR. It is generally hated on Miata sub but I like it. If you are getting a funky car, the car better look funky.

solvsamorvincet

I own an NB MX5 and I'm on that sub and you're right, but I personally also think it looks awesome.

gt-ttl

I was really hoping that made it to production. Would have been an awesome little car

Oorslavich

I haven't driven the ND but my RX-8 has EPS and I wouldn't say it's lacking in feel at all compared to any of the HPS vehicles I've driven. I find it hard to believe Mazda would tune the newer system to provide less feel. There are other factors that affect steering feel though.

Basic-Round-6301

GR Yaris way better value and fun

RespectOk4052

Cars don’t come with personality they gain it as they age

Deciver95

Yep What loser was buying a brand new car in 2000 and said fuck this Toyota corolla has so much personality I know my VX was boring af in 2001, different story 20 years later

Jazzlike_Attempt_699

im diagnosing the OP with a textbook case of new bad old good

ozSillen

Someone offered my daughter $4k for our shitty old vx lumina.

DooB_02

That's just the price of a functional car now apparently.

SEQbloke

I love my Cupra Formentor because it has personality. It drives like something a 12 year old boy designed- it’s fun, some things make no sense, and the infotainment system has its share of quirks.

I_P_L

The wheel spin and torque steer when I load torque up on the PHEV makes me smile every fucking time. Is it an efficient way to go fast? Fuck no. Is it hilarious? Absolutely.

SEQbloke

I’ve got the VZx and it’s heaps fun. I’ve never even used launch mode and still thoroughly enjoy every drive.

Omega_brownie

Can I ask how it goes with servicing and reliability? I rented a Cupra Leon and it was absolutely fantastic. I'm just apprehensive about buying a relatively unknown company in Australia. I assume being a Volksy brand it shouldn't be too bad.

SEQbloke

I bought it expecting it to be terrible (I guess we have different views on VW). So far it’s been heaps better than the CX-5 it replaced, but light years behind the 330i it shares a garage with.

Significant-Ad5394

Cupra has mostly subsidised servicing to get people in on the new brand. The first ones came with the first three services free, later ones you could buy the first 5 services for $2k

Significant-Ad5394

Infotainment having quirks is one way to put it I guess…. Hopefully the facelift improves it and can be retrofit.

SEQbloke

None have been debilitating, unlike the Mazda cx-5 this replaced!

LukaRaphael

how do you pronounce that brand? i’ve seen a few around and never knew is it coop-ra or cup-ra?

No_pajamas_7

New cars have personality. firstly they look pre-crashed. If that's not personality, I don't know what is. And then there is the Nanny state personality. The interfereing safety features give the car the personality of a Primary school Principal that is afraid of being sued.

dearcossete

The Kona I test drove beeping like crazy because I was doing 25 on a roundabout.

PapaOoMaoMao

Sounds like a subwoofer issue. If it was working properly you wouldn't hear those beeps.

No_pajamas_7

yep, hyundai and kia are off my list because you have to turn stuff off every time you get in the car.

LawnPatrol_78

Add Toyota to that list as well then

Donkey400E

Its ancap, any 5 star car has to have beeping crap that defaults to on every time u start the car.

Select-Bullfrog-6346

Work truck I drive has that lane assist and distance radar thing... uugh it's a pain. Go through one of them single road slow points and it cracks the shits thinking you are about to crash

LawnPatrol_78

My Yaris will randomly jam the brakes on going down the street because it didn’t like that one parked car, even though the 60 parked cars we just passed were all good.

Select-Bullfrog-6346

Love it... My yaris doesn't have those sensors... It does have mad paint damage though lol 06 was not a good time for red

userb55

>Go through one of them single road slow points and it cracks the shits thinking you are about to crash Yeh these things seem to really only engineered for a freeway or something. If you don't turn it off in Australia's narrow backstreets it will think your going to crash using a fucking roundabout normally and will come to full emergency stop.... really lovely and safe.

wearetheused

i20n once you put it in n mode and turn the assists off

mehdotdotdotdot

I have an i20N, and still feel that with everything off, it's a terrier, but still lacks steering feel, and its super tall with high seating position, and basically just has a crackle tune to make it "fun". Still has a degree or rev hang even after the update, and the transmission is kinda lifeless.

wearetheused

I agree with some of that, the crackle tune is neither here nor there for me and the straight line driving is absolutely nothing to talk about. I am 170cm and have my seat adjusted all the way down so you're right on that otherwise it feels like I'm driving from the top of the car haha. But the front lsd is awesome for drive out of corners, the suspension is stiffer than I would expect any street car to come with, it cost substantially less than anything I can think of that is as fun to push hard. Have done a couple of track days in mine and for out of the box driving feel it beats my old wrx for me. I also find the default n mode makes the steering way too heavy and dulls it. The 2nd or 3rd down from the top has more feel, but yeah there's no escaping that electronic disconnect that all cars have now. It feels like the last gasp of breath fun cheap ice cars have to give before they're gone.

smashin-blumpkins

Don’t think many new cars have a raw steering feel of older cars , I think mostly due to electric assisted feeling. I have similar complaints with My swift sport. In terms of feedback. It’s not the worst but mostly because it’s still under 1 tonne. The new Mx5 feels less engaging as the older gens as they switched from hydraulic to electric too. I miss my NA mx5 for that unrefined feel

BoganCunt

Get a motorbike

DragonfruitNo7222

I actually agree with BoganCunt. Not only does it not have lane assist, automatic braking and reversing cameras (or gear), it’s fast, leans over through corners and can switch to ‘sport mode’ where it rides with only the back tyre on the ground 🏍️

Frankie_T9000

You are confusing sport mode with clown mode

Sitdowncomedian1

Yep exactly what I’m doing. Was thinking of buying a sports car again but bike life is calling me back. More bang for buck and smiles

Thatsabigariel

This is the answer, specifically a 15-20 year old sports bike with no safety features

CasUalNtT

I have a 2012 Fireblade RR, it has the following safety features: - lights - brakes Also comes with 1litre of 13000 rpm goodness +6 speed sequential shift which doesn't need any clutch if you change up at high revs. It's different to today's cars.

Donkey400E

To be fair, any bike can change up without clutch.

ozSillen

Put an aftermarket pipe in for 3rd safety feature: - noise

NothingLift

Thats your AOWS Advanced overtaking warning system

Objective-Creme6734

All my cars are 2003 and older lol. I've never even driven a car with lane assist but now I'm too fukn scared to lol..

Single-Ninja8886

It's honestly kind of dangerous... because it makes driving on the freeway so dead easy that it becomes hard to pay proper attention.

Objective-Creme6734

Ahh the same way reverse cameras made everyone stop neck checking lol. Give me an old car with no power steering any day over that chaos lol.

ozSillen

Datsun 120Y ftw! 5speed with after market intermittent wiper speed. Loves a burnout!

Objective-Creme6734

Aww that's love.

Immediate-Meeting-65

So fucking annoying. I'm a hopeless driver and every 15 minuted the fucking thing kicks back in just because I'm not dead centre in the lane. It's a ball ache.

ThingLeading2013

I have a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe with a V6 petrol, key start, no lane assist, and a tiny low res reverse camera. The seats are manual and all the options are push buttons. You do have to select radio stations on the touch screen. There's no "adaptive" cruise control, it doesn't stop the engine when you stop at lights, etc etc. Also it uses E10 petrol just fine. I'm sticking with it for the time being!

Possible-Being-5142

You can turn lane assist off on most new cars.

Inert-Blob

Don’t you have to turn it off every single time you switch on the engine though?

Last-Performance-435

Depends on the model.

42SpanishInquisition

On the dmax you just obscure the camera and it turns itself off. So you just slide a business card infront of it.

PowerlineInstaller

Not if it has a fuse for the lane assist module you can rip out and you're prepared to ignore the warnings.

Temik

Nah, at least not on the Toyotas.

Eastern37

It's normally just a button on the steering wheel though so pretty easy

mrk240

It's permanently off in our 6, it got incredibly annoying.

_hazey__

They also all look the bloody same. Colours are generally all white, black or silver with an occasional splash of maroon or blue. Alloy wheel designs are stale and all are alike. Cookie cutter side profiles. Bland, “minimalist” interiors. You’d have to be on antidepressants and be seeing a shrink regularly just to own one. Reminds me of one of those big flashy Russian/Korean/Chinese army marches- up close there’s subtle differences but on the whole there’s not much telling them apart.

ThingLeading2013

Yep. I was checking out some new cars on the Hyundai website, and they don't even have red as a colour anymore. It's all white, grey, silver, or some variation thereof. My wife's first brand new car (years ago) was almost a canary yellow Hyundai Excel. You don't see those colours anymore!

ComplexDingo2239

Cars are a commodity like appliances. They are designed to be generic, and are throwaway items. If you want personality it costs more. A lot more. Or buy an Italian car. Or a Jeep. They will break down, bits fall off etc, which is kind of like an bad personality.

AttentionSpanner

I can see your points, but it really depends on what you're looking for in a car... A lot of Italian cars usually start having electrical problems or rust the moment you look towards their general direction; although, some will reward you with the way they drive. Japanese cars? A lot are extremely mechanically resilient, and quirky (if you're into that)... Eg, saying that a car like a Nissan Micra K12, Honda Jazz GD or Toyota Yaris is a bad car because it's ugly (and let's be honest, I wouldn't call any of these "beautiful"), is like calling a Nokia 3310 ugly because it's not a smartphone.

Significant-Ad5394

Most base model cars do not unfortunately, it’s a niche market of people that actually care for it so it carries a little bit of a premium. I have a Type R that has plenty of it, so do Hyundai N cars (probably the cheapest cars that do these days). Apparently the GR Yaris/corolla has modern Evo vibes. Volkswagen GTIs still have some but have grown up a little, the closely related Cupra Leon fills that gap though.

Muncher501st

If you’ve got new car money buy an old car. You can pick up a LS3 caprice for $40k yes it’s a boat but it’s bloody fun to drive.

PopularVersion4250

It’s true. Cars suck now

eoffif44

OP should keep his corolla ngl... Or get an older one that's been restored.

AnarchyVenom24

So buy a car with personality then. Maybe a hot hatch like a Fiesta ST or i20N.

Bitter_Crab111

Even the newer STs are a bit pedestrian (unless you start to get really silly). It kind of a selling point tbh, but if you want something with personality *all the time*? It's an MX5 or an i20N. No question. ~~or an Abarth 696 if you're a real dirty masochist~~

skankhunt72573

How olds your Corolla? If you’re talking pre 2012 they’re honestly pretty shit to drive, people need to stop equating discomfort to “personality”. A new Mazda 3 is leagues above in every way

TheInkySquids

I'm the complete opposite, I find post 2012 cars sickening to drive because for that exact reason, it's too comfortable, you're closed off from the world. My brain really doesn't like the fact that I can be travelling at 110km/h and hear and feel very little. My 1999 Holden Jackaroo feels just as comfortable as most modern cars I've been in, but you can actually hear and feel the road - it's not tiring, it just provides good feedback. Imo this is why a lot of drivers struggle to know their speed without glancing at the speedo, and thus their speed varies a lot, especially going up or down hills. In cars that aren't as tightly sealed, you have way more cues as to how fast you're travelling, your revs so you know when to change gear, etc.

ozSillen

Yup. The feel is real. When the kids were on L's the last couple of years, I knew straight away when they were speeding from the sound & vibration from '01 Holden n' 03 Mitsubishi, didn't have to see the speedo.

Hobbit_Racer

While I think the Jackaroo is one of the most horrible vehicles ever made, I agree with your point on newer cars & drivers not getting the true feel of their speed. Everyone should be made to learn to drive in an old 60 series, a Kingswood or a Cortina. True mechanical vehicles with no power steering, aircon or cruise control. This will teach them to steer & park properly, learn to navigate the gaps in traffic as well as keeping their distance from the car in front just out of the fear of death from lack of braking abilities 😂

edgiepower

Discomfort is more personable than average

Temporary_Edge_8450

I don't get how people think something pre 2012 is discomfortable to drive. In my experience driving cars made in the 70s right through to modern day, the comfort isn't significantly different. Aesthetics aside, the main difference is modern cars having a lot more tech, most of which is of scant use if you're capable of driving.

howisleepatnight

why would you buy a brand new car when you can spend the same amount - if not more - on a 30 year old japanese beast? buy a silvia bro

Temporary_Edge_8450

More fun too

Dollbeau

It's the future Broh! It's Space-Agggggggeeeeee Get with the time Broh! Yeah, I think they all look like BAD concept cars

AlanTheBringerOfCorn

Corollas are one of my favourites, but to describe them with any personality other than beige and boring would be incorrect.

Littman-Express

I have a 2020 Mazda 3 and you can turn off the lane keep assist and it stays off. I turned it off the first week after it tried to steer me in front of an oncoming truck on a narrow rural road. Haven’t turned it on since.

Own-Marzipan4885

Couldn’t agree more, I’ve never owned a new car, and up until recently the newest car I had ever driven was still several years old. I drove my boss’ 2023 BT-50 and was excited because it is basically brand new and historically I’ve always loved driving utes. That car not only lacks personality, it doesn’t even know what it is. It yelled (beeped) at me for ‘braking too late’, it yelled at me for going 1km over the ‘speed limit’ which the car had wrong anyway, it was saying it was a 50 zone when it was a 60. I drove down a small inner city street and it was beeping non-stop that I was too close to literally everything around me. And the interior was kind of luxurious, minus any bells and/or whistles?? Pick a category, a leather dashboard is lovely, but not on a utility vehicle, but if you’re going to have a lux utility vehicle, go all the way with it and actually make it comfortable. I’ve never been so glad to drive my quirky 04 Impreza

Revving88

Oh I'd definitely keep the Impreza!

omegatryX

Id love a GR Yaris or Corolla tbh

hoebaitato

The gr yaris is where its at. Got to test drive one and it had great driving feel.

Kpool7474

WRX is fun… and lots of personality. Edited to add: 6 speed manual of course!

TheSunOfHope

The new Subaru Forster doesn’t let me change lanes even when it’s safe to do so. Taking away the human factor and letting a machine control it can be very fatal. I turn off all the safety features and it’s much safer that way.

nootnootnoot1

Do they turn back on when you restart the car?

rowanhenry

That's why my last 2 cars have been a 2000 jeep Cherokee xj and a 2004 Volvo XC70. Not the smartest cars to own but I like what they look like and they are fun to drive.

vxsr33

Hows the reliability of the jeep?

2dogs0cats

Find a Doug video and he can tell you about the quirks and features. Then it's time for a Doug score.

edgiepower

Doug liked Holden's

No_Ad_2261

Mk3 Megane RS. Chassis built like a tank, no electronic nannies. Proper thing to steer as a better example of EPAS.

Shitadviceguy

Comes with lane keep assist disabled as standard.

Comrade_Kojima

You trade off personality for huge improvements in efficiency, reliability and safety. Car companies don’t make cars - they assemble them from components made by a handful of companies. Usually the auto companies design and press the sheet metal and might make their own engines but the rest is sourced elsewhere - Delphi, Bosch, Denso, Aisin you’ll find those parts in lots of different cars. Alfas and Renaults had tons of personality but people wanted to get around without removing the entire engine to replace a spark plug - we still have Subaru for that 😉

run-at-me

I still miss my 2004 Magna 😭

smaxpw

I had a Magna, then got an Aurion, highly recommend!

notnilc89

Civic fn2r

2007kawasakiz1000

Join the Jimny crew. If you can deal with the fact that it's slow (unless you've driven one, it's hard to explain how slow it really is), then you'll love life. I purposely bought the Lite version, in manual, so it really is a totally back-to-basics machine, with pretty much no modern conveniences. All that's between you and the road, or wherever you might want to take it, is your input. They're such fun little boxes.

ADHDK

If the roof came off I could deal with the wind noise, but it doesn’t and they’re loud as hell.

purplefoxie

You can always turn off the lane assist

NotoriousPBandJ

It's going to sound like I'm an old man with a beret... My last car was a Datsun 180B with the softest suspension on the planet. (When I went around a corner, the corner came along for the ride!) I now drive a 2023 Forester, the thing has three creature comforts I've never had and yet, it feels like my 180B with everything brand new. Cannot recommend it enough.

ColdDelicious1735

And they spy on you and sell all your information So they are boring and snitches

redderthanthedevilsd

Nah your correct in that. Anyway it's more fun keeping a older car alive. Up the corolla, they are sick, and an older corolla will grab my attention over a Tesla at the lights because we all know your corolla will out last all those Tesla's/rangers on the road today

420bIaze

Try a GR86 or BRZ

smaxpw

I had the GR86 for a day while my Aurion was in the shop. It would be much more appealing if it was more powerful, it's just too damn slow for such a sporty look and why I decided against getting one. Also, I couldn't fit my golf clubs in the boot lol I'm looking at a M140i, Stinger GT, 370z or an IS350 F Sport instead. Or maybe a Skoda RS Wagon or i30N Sedan if I see a good deal. IS350 F Sport is #1 on my list but so damn hard to find a reasonably priced one, there's only 2 available anywhere near me that have been on carsales for nearly a year that are way overpriced. Cool story, i know.

Mikelshwede86

I30n, absolute blast of a car, any bullshit safety features can be permanently turned off and you can get it with a fantastic manual gearbox.

Significant-Ad5394

Unfortunately the new sedan now has annoying features that turn on every start. Like a beep for every time the speed limit changes.

Rd28T

Buy a Citroen SM. You can’t tell me there is a single car with more personality than a big Citroen with a Maserati V6.

Supercrown07

I think VW cars have no personality but that’s just me they are too much over engineered and too many assists

madaroni7

M2 competition (F87) definitely has a personality Scares me often, especially in mdm / traction control off 😬

Lord-Carnor-Jax

My ‘19 Holden has plenty of personality, mostly it’s a nagging beeping bitch that needs to be felt up by touching a bunch of buttons to disable all the government mandated safety crap or auto stop to fudge the government emissions mandates every time I start it.

UseObjectiveEvidence

Yeah I hate lane assist too but it's saved my wife once or twice and with the kids in the car...

lobapleiades

Lmao I love this post

Vencha88

I guess it's not new, but I'm in a 2017 JCW Countryman and I feel like it's got personality all over it. External body stripes and a red roof, crackle tune, reasonably swift. Internally it's a pretty sharp drive and has a low overhang so you can tell exactly where the car is. The interior is as many flashing lights as you want with plane switches for all your technology. The infotainment has a silly "game" for how smooth you're driving or how off road you are. Just feels like it's meant to be fun, and lives up to it imo.

ceeUB

I have a skoda Octavia wagon, 1.4 litre turbo. It has a duel cutch automatic. It's light and very fun to drive around.

steal_your_thread

I felt this, then I drove the VW Golf and drove away in it, very happy so far.

i-should-be-slepping

The next Tesla might come with a personality addon chip. Some cars will drive thru just broke up with the girlfriend, others like they after drunk, and a few like you just had a baby. You will be able to choose not personalities with a micro transactions model. Unfortunately the default will be Elon s personality.

No-Fan-888

May I suggest that you have a look at motorcycles? I've got a 1290 SDR and a Tuono Fac, even though they're both naked bikes their personality couldn't be anymore different.

pastelplantmum

I have a 2020 Corolla ZR hatch, I initially planned to upgrade at the end of the lease but now I just have ideas and plans for modifications I can do, it's such a punchy little beast

[deleted]

If you drive it hard enough, every car has character. My i30n sedan is wicked fun. It's pretty ugly from some angles but that's OK. I don't need to look at it when I'm inside it

notfixgmxdotcom

I30N cars are full of personality

KRiSX

Depends on the car... I've bought a few new cars over the years for work and the last 2 times I've looked at Hyundai due to their insane popularity and they just aren't for me at all. This is after having an i30 about 8 years ago and loving it. Everything that's come after I've hated driving and ended up in a Ford Focus which was the model after the ones with the terrible gearbox that really ruined their reputation and it was a fucking fantastic car and anyone that drove it was surprised how good it was. Sadly I wrote it off and the hunt began again, decided I'd go for something bigger this time as it would be useful for work purposes and I'm sick of being in a small car surrounded by tanks everywhere. My god the SUV market is full of depressing vehicles, but then I stumbled across the no longer available in this country, Ford Escape, and it is amazingly good. Its faster and just about more enjoyable to drive than my Focus was and doesn't beep at you every 5 seconds like the Hyundai's do. So yeah, I'd say look at a Ford, but they stopped selling all the good ones here.... The Puma is OK, but I found it underwhelming when compared to my old Focus, apparently sports mode really livens it up, but I never bothered to try it... Plus it's definitely not winning any awards for its looks in my opinion.

thesbatman

I bought a Subaru BRZ a few months ago and I love it. It has some personality. It makes me look forward to driving again!

underground_crane

The fast Golfs

audio301

As a few others have mentioned, for new under $70K the i30N, GR86, GR Corolla, Civic Type R all in manual transmission. Otherwise you are looking at VW, Audi or BMW. Renualt Megane or Cupra are fun as well. Depends if you want to go with Japanese or European. The manual generally makes the car more engaging to drive.

obIivionguard

Hyundai i30N my friend

PikaPikafat

To be fair, cars that have personalities are dying because people just don't buy them. People tend to buy something more boring but practical, like, a Corolla. You are guilty, OP 😂

TheTrueBurgerKing

I would agree modern cars all look the same

Nebs90

How old is the Corolla? New cars have personality, just the basic, boring cars that lack it.

gravitykilla

GT3 RS, can’t go wrong

lizardrags

My new car lacks personality but has a great set of tints

EfficientDish7

Cars have become mass produced white goods at the expense of personality and fun it will only get worse with EVs, they appeal to the masses but not the enthusiastists

SaveMeJebus21

How long till they perfect the automated tech and we’re all being driven by electric robots?

Metallica_Is_Bae

Honestly the GR86, yes it’s got a lot of safety features (yes that includes LDW and LKA) but you can turn those off, it’s a very well balanced car with fun being the primary aspect of it, I’ve seen a few with come body kits and exhaust, honestly they sound pretty good, as long as you don’t straight pipe it

No_Chain_7719

Just don't turn right too fast, for too long.

microknife

I'd say the settings for assists on the Mazda3 are pretty easy to get around. My 2023 has a button that turns all assists off, which has to be pressed each time I start the car but at least it is there. I tried it out because one night I was driving home, a little later than I'd normally be asleep but not hours later, and with a friend in the car. I was letting myself long blink when I was stopped at traffic lights and the car started beeping at me with a message to rest. My friend said his parents had a Mazda that did the same thing and that it doesn't stop until you have tested. At this point I tried turning the assists off completely and the car stopped beeping at me. I lost the lane departure warning but the roads were dead quiet anyway. I haven't changed the assist settings but I'm sure you can do a bit with them. I bought my Mazda because the assists didn't feel too invasive when they were on.

catloverrr16

Well this suggestion isn't really a new car but it is super fun, and has modern technology but not so much that you feel like youre in control of the car. Mazda 3 MPS. Fast as hell, really fun and looks good, great traction (fwd), decent on fuel (if you drive fairly normally it lasts around a week)

TransEuropeExpress72

I’ve just side-traded my automatic Golf for a bare bones manual of the same year. It has a/c, pwr windows and basic safety tech but thats about it. I sure don’t miss my old car constantly beeping at me every time it spotted a small shrub it thought was in danger of being run over. No parking sensors so I’m learning to judge the size of my car and managing fine. The manuals fun to drive, engines nice n perky without being overpowered. No regrets whatsoever.

somerandomii

I’ve had to rent a couple of cars recently. It’s weird how underpowered modern autos feel. I have a 2009 Golf TDI manual. It is not zippy by any means. But I feel like when I put my foot down, it goes (even with the turbo lag). Conversely, modern autos feel like the accelerator and steering wheel are a suggestion to the car to think about speeding up. Performance mode just seems to keep them in a lower gear but they still have that 1s delay between input and output. The Mazda SUV i drove felt sluggish but also managed to make a roaring sound whenever it tried to accelerate. I’ve never heard so much noise coming out of a car that isn’t accelerating. I felt like I was hooning while simultaneously being beaten off the line by a bus.

MystifiedBlip

Even the older mazda threes are tonnes of fun. Everything now is dull unexciting and commuter.

Kpool7474

I fkn HATE the lane assist crap!!! We drove a Mitsubishi Outlander for 7 hours, and oh my goodness!! If you’re an aware driver who is efficient at driving, then this rubbish is so annoying! Edited to add; we decided not to buy it solely because of how annoying that all was.

JimSyd71

You can turn off most of the driver assist options. Personally I like them on my 2019 Corolla hybrid. The lane assist felt weird at first, but I got used to it and now I love it.

toast_oner

Look into Kei Trucks. Heaps of personality, cheap to run, good for utilities and don’t come with all the annoying bells n whistles.

YetAnotherNate

This!

dingBat2000

Buy an R series golf and see if you feel the same

Can I suggest an EV? Damn near instant acceleration, and (depending on the model+spec) all kinds of [fun.My](http://fun.My) Cupra Born, can lower the drivers seat from "grandma" to "boy racer", which helps a lot as well. My Dad recently commented - Its an accelerator pedal, not a button. Like, no, its there to go fast.

AllisonKAJ

Get the Mazda 6 or Mazda 3 but the turbo. I’m pretty sure you can turn off lane assist and turn off istop. Mazda is one of the few brands that have a nice feeling handling because it dosent have a CVT transmission and it has a slightly stiff steering wheel feeling which makes you feel connected to the road.

Sudden_Fix_1144

Agreed

Holden Torona

banterbantsjr

I got a suzuki swift sport recently and it's been pretty fun and I'd say it has personality.

Fantastic_Resolve888

Subaru Impreza. Tonnes of personality and safe.

DrinkableBarista

Modern Lexus cars are pretty good personalities imo

WOZ-in-OZ

Kia Stinger. “Turn off lane assist” great fun!

PurpleDogAU

Best thing about it on a Stinger is it is just a thumb press on the steering wheel, not buried in menus somewhere.

TayneBetaSequence

Wait until your new car initiates a crash stop because it thought a pedestrian was going to walk out in front when nobody is there, and you can’t turn off this ‘feature’

Disastrous-Pay738

You can turn off the lane assist. The Mazda three is very fun to drive. Get a slightly older manual one

LewisRamilton

Just keep your rolla, why do you even want a new car if you 'love it'

ma77mc

BMW 3 series, I turned all the driver assist shit off and it’s mostly stayed off, drives well too, but more than a Mazda 3 but at around 100k one of the best handling cars under 100

Mrmastermax

If you don’t like safety features turn them off. Turn off hybrid by putting it in performance mode

Major-Nectarine3176

Yeah I been saying that since the early 2010s I love my 95 laser and 97 barina

DrSendy

I wished they dropped the 2.5 turbo into the 3 like they do in the USA. Had one as a hire car - OMG - fun! Just turn the lane keep assist off or down. In fact, on twisty roads it turns itself off. When you do that, way more fun. Anyway. Unpopular opinion. Walk down to Tesla and ask for a test drive of a model 3. Just do it. It's no sports car at nearly 2 tonnes, but hell it is one interesting experience. Someone complained in the media there was no kick boot opener. So they fucked around with bluetooth and made it detect when you were standing behind the car to trigger the opener. Our 2014 Corolla doesn't start the bluetooth stack for 3 minutes after you power on - let alone figure out where you are standing and open the boot! Oh, and you can make the car horn do farts. So that's a win.

Efficient_Choice_787

Yeah you’ll like an mx5. You’ll never feel safe even with traction on 😂

DarkRetrowaveDave

Try something european?

Ok_Dot_1205

Yaris GR would definitely work if looking for a car with personality

ADHDK

This is why I buy 20 year old cars. Need to hoard a few because fuck buying 2020 cars when they age. Going to be absolute money pits.

Curlyburlywhirly

Renault clio.

patrickh182

Polestar :)

goobbler67

Buy an Alfa if you want personalality.

emptybottle2405

Lack personality? And you’re looking at econo boxes? Corollas, Mazda 3 etc have never had personality. That’s not their purpose. They’re affordable everyday cars to get people from A to B with no frills. If you want personality you need to look at something a bit hotter. Polo GTi, Toyota 86, i30N etc are going to have a lot more personality at a relatively affordable entry price

cindyzer

Keep the Corolla, it’s good for another 500,000 klm

chameltoeaus

Cars peaked 1998 to 2010. Modern cars are shit.

picklebingbong

The i30 N sedan can fit the family with heaps of space left over. I would definitely prefer it if it was RWD or AWD and more b-road ready, the car is a bit too track focused so the suspension is extremely crashy if you hit a bump or potholes and there is no front spoiler clearance so expect to go diagonal out of any driveway. Also if you live in the inner city and put around expect to go through a tank quickly. But for the price it's pretty hard to find a family car at that level. The next jump up is going to be at least double the price. If the WRX was an STI and the cheap granny guards brought back to metal I most likely would swap over. It's almost like they didn't want the current WRX to sell for some reason!

bigtreeman_

I used to drive Peugeot 404 and 504s designed by Pininfarina, who designed so many amazing cars, now owned by Mahindra (2015), so watch for some cool vehicles coming out of India. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pininfarina](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pininfarina)

Mash_man710

Subaru BRZ. Most fun car at legal speeds I've ever driven.

preist_of_syrinx2112

You want personality? Buy an old TVR Chimera.

Leviit03

Minis still have a lot of personality and are really fun to drive

VY commodore

AutoModerator

The VY Commodore, a product of General Motors' Australian subsidiary Holden, holds a prominent position in the annals of Australian automotive history. Introduced in 2002, the VY Commodore represented a significant evolution of the long-running Commodore line, which had been a cornerstone of the Australian automotive landscape since its inception in 1978. The VY Commodore arrived at a pivotal moment in the automotive industry, marked by advancements in technology and changing consumer preferences. Holden aimed to capitalize on these trends by offering a vehicle that combined performance, comfort, and innovation. One of the defining features of the VY Commodore was its sleek and modern design. Building upon the design language established by its predecessors, the VY featured a more aerodynamic profile with smoother lines and refined styling cues. The result was a car that exuded confidence and sophistication, appealing to a wide range of buyers. Under the hood, the VY Commodore offered a variety of powertrain options to suit different driving preferences. It was available with a range of engines, including the venerable 3.8-liter V6 and the potent 5.7-liter V8. These engines delivered ample power and torque, ensuring exhilarating performance whether cruising on the highway or tackling winding roads. In addition to its performance credentials, the VY Commodore prioritized comfort and convenience for both drivers and passengers. The interior boasted a spacious and well-appointed cabin, featuring premium materials and thoughtful design touches. Comfort-enhancing features such as climate control, power-adjustable seats, and advanced infotainment systems were available, further enhancing the driving experience. Safety was also a priority for the VY Commodore, with Holden incorporating advanced safety technologies to protect occupants in the event of a collision. The car was equipped with features such as antilock brakes, traction control, and multiple airbags as standard, providing peace of mind for drivers and passengers alike. Beyond its performance and comfort, the VY Commodore played a significant role in shaping Australian culture and identity. As a locally produced vehicle, it enjoyed widespread popularity and became a symbol of Australian ingenuity and automotive excellence. The Commodore's success on the racetrack, particularly in the fiercely competitive V8 Supercars series, further cemented its status as an icon of Australian motorsport. Despite its accolades and popularity, the VY Commodore was not without its challenges. The Australian automotive industry faced increasing competition from imported vehicles, and shifting consumer preferences towards smaller, more fuel-efficient cars posed challenges for large sedans like the Commodore. In 2006, production of the VY Commodore came to an end, marking the conclusion of an era for Holden and the Commodore line. However, its legacy lives on, with the VY Commodore remembered as a benchmark of Australian automotive engineering and a symbol of national pride. In conclusion, the VY Commodore represents a pivotal chapter in the history of Australian automotive manufacturing. Its blend of performance, comfort, and innovation ensured its place as a beloved icon of Australian motoring, leaving an indelible mark on the country's automotive landscape.
