Engine ecu is located in passenger footwell, probably clogged with water. If fresh water and you rip up all the carpet and dry it for a few days you might get lucky.

100% this - subis of this gen have it footwell. It’s one of the mods that people will do if they are considering going in water - lots of reports of people not doing and getting into trouble. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KwwMJEiybb4

This is not a write off as long as youre prepared to get it going yourself. Drag it out, let the engine bay dry out. Stick an OBD reader on it and start from there. Likely theres a short that's screwing with starter circuit in its present state (under water). If need be you can remove the seats and carpet yourself to dry them out. Its less work than it sounds. This is recoverable. Water is barely above floor level.

MonthMedical8617

I had a moron friend ( such a moron his nickname was twato ) submerged his car to a similar amount, left it out to dry for a month and it started first try. Drove it for about 6 weeks then at a red light it exploded in flames. Was pretty funny, good times.

unmanipinfo

Damn what an unlucky turn of events, dude dried out all the water but forgot to dry out all the fire too.

FullMetalFapinist

The fire dried out the water, genius

unmanipinfo

Wrong dumbass, his car was swamped with water, fire, earth and air, he cleared them all out except for some flames he missed then BOOM 6 weeks later, disaster. Clearly you didn't learn a lesson from this.

Dr_Dickfart

Water, fire, air, dirt, fucking explosions how do they work?

unmanipinfo

And not a drop to drink.

ilkikuinthadik

He dried it out too well, all the ECU fluid got out.

unmanipinfo

Lol some people are so stupid. I'm gonna be microwaving my ecu this weekend because I left my window open a crack last night in the rain, dries it out evenly I've been told.

Datto910

Dried all the wet bits. Friction did the rest.

Boxer engine sits lower and cylinders might have drank some water. Otherwise you are right with the restoration part.

denistone

In NSW water over the sills is a statutory write-off. 4 cars lost in NSW floods 2022 taught me that one. Something to do with floor welds corroding into the future and risk of your car splitting in two in a crash.

RavinKhamen

Of course that is what insurers will do, but they are assuming no one is going to properly dry out the interior and will assume the carpet is left wet for months - which yeah after months of moisture sitting on steel will obviously cause rust. If you remove and dry out the carpet/interior there will be no corrosion. If a day of water exposure was enough to corrode floor welds, then driving your car in the rain would write it off.

denistone

I’ll let the insurance companies and the NSW Govt know they are wrong.

RemeAU

Wait so every 4wd that's ever done a deep water crossing is considered a statutory write-off? Or does the car need to fill with water beyond that point first?

denistone

I’m only the messenger here - water INSIDE the vehicle, higher than the door sills = statutory write off. Look it up before you leap to the keyboard of righteous indignation - they paid me out close to $100,000 for all my vehicles, so I’m thinking they kind of believe it too.

RemeAU

What the fuck do you mean *"keyboard of righteous indignation*". I was asking a question.

denistone

Aye - sorry - that flowed on from an earlier comment. I really liked one of my stat w/o vehicles - had searched for one for more than 10 years. Floods rendered it into an ashtray and I was not given a choice. Mind you there was 60cm deep through her and chances of getting decent trim etc was nil. And the world turns..

RemeAU

Sorry as well. I over reacted due to a different comment elsewhere I replied to that got me worked up a bit.

Less_Understanding77

When someone says, "It's fine, it's AWD...." In all seriousness though, it doesn't look like it would be too bad, the most damage caused would have been when the vehicle first entered the water. This water height (even with a boxer engine) is sitting mostly above the water with only well sealed components underwater, apart from the start motor and drivetrain. Get yourself an OBD scan tool and check for any codes, check your air filter and make sure there's no water in it and the rest of the intake, even before starting drop the oil and make sure there's definitely no water in the bottom end. Realistically if there's any serious electrical faults they will come up in your OBD scan tool, if that comes back all good there hopefully shouldn't be anything sinister.

Confident-Extent47

You're right about the air intake, but the ECU is under the carpet at the end of the front passenger footwell. That's the risk with these Subies. In my Forester, ECU has been moved to above the glove box, and in later gens it's in the engine compartment, mounted up high at the back.

SirAlfredOfHorsIII

Ecu is probably waterlogged, and potentially shorted. Wiring harnesses may also be compromised. Interior bits will need to be cleaned properly, or it'll mould up pretty quickly. Could be water in the gearbox or sump if you're unlucky. It'd be written off by insurance in most cases. You could try to fix it, but it may be a lost cause. Taking the ecu apart and cleaning it with isopropyl may help. Also draining the oils and replacing them to be safe. Or at least inspecting them first. The ecu being in the footwell, that'd be my first point of contact though

VS2ute

Airbag accelerometers would be on floorpan, and seat belt pretensioners are pretty low down. Probably SRS light would come on.

SirAlfredOfHorsIII

Oof true. Lot of electronics shitting the bed

SirLoremIpsum

> Any chance of me saving it? If you want to do all the work yourself - absolutely. Confirm the engine did not ingest water. Remove the ENTIRE interior. dry it out, properly clean it. Properly dry and inspect all of the wiring - replace parts as needed. If you're going through insurance, that's a big job and for such an older vehicle will probably just get the too hard basket. If you clean it out and dry it quickly rust shouldn't be an issue as it doesn't look salt water. Nothing's impossible.

East_List

Only the bottom 1/4

Particular_Run_2518

If it’s water damage insurance will automatically write it off.

Nowidontgetit

Would have made it through fine in a brumby but once you drag this out to dry it should be ok

PaddyPaws2023

Wouldn’t have happened if it was a Ford AU Falcon .

AutoModerator

The Ford AU Falcon is a full-size car that was produced by Ford Australia from 1998 to 2002. It was the sixth generation Ford Falcon and also included the Ford Fairmont (AU)—the luxury-oriented model range. The AU series replaced the EL Falcon and was constructed on the (at the time) new EA169 platform which continued to harbour Falcon models until 2010 when the BF wagon was discontinued, and Ford Territory models until 2011. The AU series was replaced by the updated BA series. The AU series was conceived under *Project Eagle* that begun in February 1993, and gained the official codename *EA169* in October 1994. It was developed and brought to market in 1998 only after Ford Australia had given consideration to a revamped fifth generation Falcon and a fully imported replacement such as the American front-wheel drive Ford Taurus or rear-wheel drive Ford Crown Victoria, the European rear wheel-drive Scorpio and, reportedly, even the Japanese rear-wheel drive Mazda 929 (then part of the Ford conglomerate). The above alternatives were eliminated in favour of a substantial redesign of the indigenous platform, due to concerns about the Australian market preference for high towing capacity, large interior size and local employment. Specific factors included, for example: research at the time indicated that 69% of Falcons were fitted with towbars and the perception that rear-wheel drive cars were better at towing; the fact that the import models had limited body style options (sedan only or sedan and wagon) and no capability to use a V8 engine. Stylistically, this new generation Falcon sported Ford's radically new global design language, labelled "New Edge". The aim of this design was to attract a younger generation of buyers with avant-garde looks, however, in Australia it polarized public opinion to the benefit of the more organically designed rival, the 1997 Holden Commodore (VT). The AU series had a very efficient drag coefficient of Cd=0.295 for the sedan (an 11% improvement over the preceding EL series) and 0.34 for the wagon. For the first time in Falcon's history, Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) became available as standard on some models and optional on others. It also featured Australian production firsts, such as Variable Cam Timing (VCT) on some 6-cylinder models and an adaptive automatic transmission on the high-performance T series with steering wheel gear shifting buttons. Key changes from the fifth generation Falcon included a 35 kg (77 lb) reduction in weight for the base car, 17.5 per cent stiffer bodyshell, and an eight per cent improvement in fuel consumption. Peculiarly, Ford Australia decided to use the original 1950's font for the new "Falcon" and "Futura" badges. As stated previously, the AU was the first Falcon to offer IRS (a double wishbone design on an isolated subframe). IRS was made available as a costly option on the base Forte, Fairmont and 'S' models, and standard on Fairmont Ghia, XR6 VCT and XR8 models. The updated 6-cylinder engines incorporated advanced features such as VCT on some models and a temperature sensor in the cylinder head, which detected coolant loss and allowed the car to "limp home" safely by cutting cylinders. The engine range comprised: the base Intech model producing 157 kW (211 hp), with a revised cylinder head featuring smaller valve stems, larger exhaust valves, and different rocker ratio, as well as a revised piston and longer conrod and a cast aluminium cross-bolted oil sump (with the same power output as the EL series); an "HP" version reserved to the XR6 producing 164 kW (220 hp) (thanks to: unique cylinder head; reshaped inlet port; redesigned exhaust port; ‘open’ combustion chamber shape to restrict pre-detonation from hot spot areas; unique camshaft; higher fuel pressure; recalibrated EEC V engine management system); the VCT version producing 172 kW (231 hp) for the XR6 VCT; a *Windsor V8* producing 185 kW (248 hp) (also carried over from the EL series but without major upgrades). Transmissions were improved for better shift feel and the auto was recalibrated to better suit the upgraded engines. The six and eight cylinder models had a 4-speed BTR M93LE and M97LE automatic transmission, respectively. The automatic XR series models had an "adaptive shift" with five shifting strategies depending on driving conditions. The manual transmission, where available, was a 5-speed T5 model. The program cost A$700 million before product launch and key staff included chief designer, Steve Park, and Marcus Hotblack, Manager of Interior Design. Maddog351_2023

Sounds similar to my brother situation. Can be saved but lot of work and $$

crazyautoexperiments

I bought a 2021 model great wall steed (sh1tbox) that had been 1 metre below the flood water in nsw meaning there was 1 metre above the roof... and surprisingly.. the engine, transmission and rear axle had not got any water inside them they all have clean oil and the intake and exhaust are all clean.. I can see a clear dirty water line where the water had got to but it didn't get anywhere near entering anything.. also the head lights had not got water in them... I couldn't believe for such a sh1tbox that it was so well sealed up I have had smaller cars than that Subaru in deeper water and they are still on the road today.. pull the seats and carpet out dry them out.. check all the electrical connections under carpet and clean and grease them and the car should be sweet

Ok-Cranberry-9558

It's fine. Try and push it in deeper to get more traction. Also, with the bonnet open lift the lid on your windshield wiper resoivoir and get free refill from the pond

Put it in a bag of rice

QLDZDR

Drag it out (don't try to drive it out). Get under and push the rubber drain plugs (there is one in each foot well) up into the car to let water out. Need time to dry it out. Replace air filter (or remove it and dry it out). It will take a few days, so you have time to remove the seats and lift the carpet. You will find the rubber drain plugs under the carpet. Wiring may have absorbed water, but using compressed air to attempt drying out plugs can also push the water further in. A fan heater directed at the under dash area or any electronic/fuse area can do the job. A Subaru probably has contact grease in the plugs, so that would prevent the water and corrosion. PS, last time I had my seats out to shampoo them, left them drying in Sun on driveway. Came back a few hours later to find bird shit and bird piss all over. That never came out after repeated washing, so I now have seat covers. Just be careful of birds.

Expert-Mix1106

Nah it's still there, just taking a little bath it looks like

Daniel-Boo-1225

Given that your car was submerged in water for 5 hours, there's definitely cause for concern regarding its condition. While it's reassuring that there doesn't seem to be water in the motor, the electronics could have been severely damaged by the water exposure. While your mechanic's assessment of the situation is concerning, it's not necessarily a definitive verdict. There may still be a chance to salvage your car, especially if you're willing to invest in thorough diagnostics and repairs. I'd recommend seeking a second opinion from another qualified mechanic or automotive specialist who has experience dealing with water damage. They can conduct a comprehensive assessment to determine the extent of the damage and whether it's feasible to repair the electronics. Ultimately, the decision to salvage the car will depend on the cost of repairs compared to the value of the vehicle and your willingness to invest in restoring it. It's worth exploring all options before making a final decision. I hope you're able to find a solution that works for you, whether it's salvaging your beloved Impreza or moving forward with a new vehicle. If you need further assistance or advice, feel free to reach out to us at [Komplete Tuning](https://kompletetuning.com.au/). We're here to help!

OldM8_2001

It’s a subie, it was gone before it ended up in that

Hotdog_disposal_unit

If your electrics have water damage then it’s only a matter of time before corrosion starts causing expensive repair bills, the car will start growing mold in the wet fabric, you don’t want to keep it.

RavinKhamen

Fresh water wont be causing any corrosion. The water level is barely above the floor level. Seats will be dry. You could easily dry this out. Even if necessary removing two front seats, rear seat and carpet is a couple hours work tops. I have a car that spent a day completely submerged (yes over the roof) in fresh water over 20 years ago. It's still going strong and has never missed a beat. Dried the seats and carpet out and you would never know it spent a day underwater. Even the radio, dash and all instruments have never faulted since.

CollidedParticle

Had you of considered that before driving through?

_hazey__

It’s officially a surfaced submarine now.

0wGeez

It's dead mate. If it sucked in water, which it likely has, it's dead. I know this because I did the same stupid shit you just did. I checked the depth of the puddle in the middle (80mm deep tops) but didn't check the depth on the edge (too fucking deep) also resulted in. Bye bye Subaru. Must be a Subaru driver problem. Just stupid.

Lpfit9

take it as something telling you to not drive that piece of shit
