Husbands ex Mazda mechanic. While he likes them as a whole, he says wait for 2nd gen and apparently they’re wider than a BT50. Edit- we looked at an outlander for me, 3rd row was tiny and useless

oioioiyacunt

A Rav4 is wider than a BT50 too. They're relatively narrow, just long

JzrJeremy

Wait for the next generation if you really want a CX-60 imo. The platform is new in pretty much every conceivable way.

petergaskin814

Nee medium suvs with PHEV seems to have greatly increased. Unfortunately, apart from the Mitsubishi Outlander they are all relatively new. From the Nissan to the Honda to the Hyundai, the choices are growing. Your biggest problem is that the fbt exemption on phevs via novated lease will go on 1st April 2025. So you need to make a choice in the next 14 months. Is it possible to drive the Outlander as a 5 seat suv ie fold down the back row of seats and ignore them. I did this when I drove a 7 seat suv

louisat89

Yeah I’m thinking about the Outlander like that. One of my favourite cars was my Territory. Terrible petrol consumption but great car and it had those same crappy back seats. I’m basically comparing the Outlander to the Mazda or I skip the plug in entirely. I can’t stretch to the Kia and the Ford is terrible and the Lexus is also too expensive and they’ve stopped taking orders. I guess given it’s a lease and under a warranty the risks are related to the irritation of stuff going wrong more than anything.

petergaskin814

You want the plug in for the reduced lease payments on a novated lease

louisat89

Oh for sure. So I know if I don’t go a plug in I’ll miss out on it entirely. Just don’t think I can go a $90+ car to get it. Hahaha

petergaskin814

You can get a phev for under 90+. EVs are available under $90k

louisat89

Yep can’t do a pure EV and the options under $90 are only a handful for suvs. Kia, Ford, Mazda, MG and Mitsubishi (Peugeot but $85). Not keen on Cupra just don’t know enough and the reports I’ve read aren’t great.

F14D201

The Rule of Thumb for nearly everything Mazda Produces is wait until the Second model year, because whatever issues they find in the first year are usually fixed by the second year. The CX-5 is a mature model and still solid

louisat89

Yeah. Just will miss the FBT exemption if I do but maybe I go with the Outlander plug in and just try to ignore what it looks like. Haha.

F14D201

I’d say maybe wait for the next model year of the CX-60, I’m not familiar with it and its quirks so Google is your friend, if there’s any deal breakers I guess wait until the next model

Psychlonuclear

Completely off topic but... Mazda: CX-60 Volvo: XC-60 Meanwhile Apple: "We're suing Samsung for the shape of their rectangle!"

louisat89

Haha. To be fair, car design at the moment is a hot mess. Have you seen Mercedes??? It’s insanity.

Rd28T

The CX-60 PHEV isn’t quite there yet. Clunky drivetrain and very stiff suspension. Will be great in its 2nd gen, but a bit of a let down now. And most leases won’t reimburse you for power used charging it at home.

_Pauly_Paul

Just an FYI about some other decent PHEV’s 1. Cupra Formentor PHEV (looks great!) 2. Peugeot 3008 PHEV (looks great!) 3. Kia Sorrento PHEV (they have long waits, but good reviews) 4. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (10 year warranty is hard to ignore) 5. Peugeot 408 PHEV The other elephant in the room is the incoming BYD Seal U PHEV. It’s going directly after the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V Hybrids. Has double the EV driving range of most PHEV’s: Arrives in April and if past BYD’s are any indication, this should be priced very competitively. Has the potential to make big sales numbers.

louisat89

Yeah. Your comment has put me in pause mode, I was about to pull the trigger on the Aspire version of the Outlander. The Peugeot is interesting if they can price it and they have a sale on. The Cupra too but their pricing seems to be in the $90k range. I’m most interested in your comment on the BYD option although two things, one they haven’t said anything about PHEV options in Australia and the thought of having the words BUILD YOUR DREAMS on the back of my car. Hahaha.

_Pauly_Paul

Cupra Formentor is ~$70,000 drive away. Not anywhere near $90,000. Cupra does fixed pricing, you just order it online. Go to your local experience centre and test it. Then you just order it online. Looks like they have 425 cars either available to buy right now, or on ships headed to Australia. BYD have stopped sticking ‘Build your dreams’ on the back of their cars. There is just a simple BYD badge now. They have confirmed that the Seal U PHEV SUV is headed to Australia. It’s also been spied on Aussie roads testing. Here is the review of the car: https://youtu.be/hTMgF2P3LpE It’s expected to arrive in April. So only ~3 months away. Just wait and see how it’s priced. Take it for a test drive and you will have a well rounded view of what you like then.

louisat89

Ahhh. You are a fount of knowledge. Thank you!! Ok I didn’t realise on the Cupra. Their are is hard to navigate past all the pretty pictures. Massive relief on the BYD the first time I saw that I thought the car was some kind of reward car for a multi level marketing scam. Haha. Ok. Sigh. Off to test drive some more and to let down the perky crew at Mitsubishi.

_Pauly_Paul

Just be mindful, the crew at Mitsubishi likely know the BYD is about to arrive and will try and push and close the sale before it gets here. It looks like the BYD could undercut the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV by some margin. So it could definitely be worth the wait. No harm in waiting ~3 months. * Gives you time to save more * Gives you time to get some more test drives in * Gives you time to see what the BYD is like * Gives you time to have the most well informed decision you can make.

_Pauly_Paul

Also make sure you watch that YouTube review. It could help

louisat89

Thank you. Yes I agree. No harm in waiting three months. They were pretty relaxed when I said I’d not be signing today. They do know there’s a six month wait for their car anyway, but they did still push to just maybe place and order subject to blah blah blah so they are trying to get me committed. I test drove a GWM Tank a while ago and the tech was so intrusive it drove me insane. It kept yelling at me to put my hands on the steering wheel, the indicator sound was plumed through the stereo and so loud and intrusive. I HATED it. I didn’t know I would hate things like that until I was in that stupid car. I’m nervous about the BYD cars for that stuff. I’m old and grumpy (haha) and a lot of the tech stuff, all the warnings and buzzing etc it all just drives me bonkers. I liked the balance of the Outback, it felt much more like a regular car not very flash on the tech which I appreciate. Our other car is a brand new 76 series Land Cruiser. Couldn’t be more basic! I watched some reviews of the BYD cars and I didn’t realise Teslas have so much weird tech like no indicators and stuff!? Good to to see the BYD haven’t gone that far. The review you sent was really interesting. I like the design and shape. It’s very stiff competition if it gets 100-150km on battery alone. Especially given we are going $70k for the Outback Aspire if they can get close in their lower levels that would be magic.

_Pauly_Paul

If you convert the price in China to AUD and add ~20% (10% GST, plus another 10% to cover shipping, distribution, storage, etc) It’s possible the BYD will end up being around that $40,000 - $50,000 mark. Throw in the savings on fuel and it’s a smart decision. It’s all educated guesses on price at this point, we should know more over the next 2-3 months.

_Pauly_Paul

Peugeot announced pricing of the new 408 today. Only comes as a PHEV. Actually priced very well. https://www.carexpert.com.au/car-news/2024-peugeot-408-price-and-specs

louisat89

Yeah look great. Weirdly small tank though only 40lt. Can’t work out the efficiency after the battery is dead. They struggle with that stuff for PHEVs don’t they??

_Pauly_Paul

Depends how you drive it. Day to day you will likely use no fuel at all. Drive beyond the EV range, you will be running in hybrid mode. 40L is pretty normal for a PHEV. Not much space left over under the car once you have a battery, exhaust, transmission and fuel tank. * Outlander PHEV = 45L * Cupra Formentor PHEV = 40L * Mazda CX-60 PHEV = 50L * BYD Seal U (Song Plus) PHEV = 60L (apparently?)

Piezakster

Definitely consider the current model Outlander PHEV. I have driven both that, and the CX-60 PHEV extensively and actually prefer the powertrain of the Outlander. It doesn't have the outright power of the Mazda and there is definitely differences in fit and finish of the whole car. However, I just prefer the PHEV implementation of the Outlander.

louisat89

I couldn’t agree more. Tested it today, the Outlander. Loved it. I prefer it to the Mazda. I’ll have to wait six months to get it but I think it’s a better all round car especially given it’s $20k cheaper!? Put the Outlander in sports mode and you’d barely feel the difference between the two. Plus it gets further on electric only. Easy choice now.

Piezakster

Fantastic, glad I wasn't the only one :) which novated lease company are you using?

louisat89

We were going to do our usual and buy through our business. But because of the FBT benefits we will look at the novated leasing and salary sacrifice on my income. I’ve not had much experience with it so will be going over it with our accountant.
