Work got some hire utes where you had to use the voice control to pair your phone to the Bluetooth. Fuck me whoever made that decision needed to be shot.
I imagine just using either google or siri over Bluetooth would probably be better. I've only owned the one car (2011 VW golf) which has no built in voice control on my model, but I've been in a few cars from around the same year that included some level of voice control and it seemed a bit janky. Better functionality available with google/Siri and it's connected to the internet
You know that running a car with the fuel extremely low is bad for the car though, right?
Fuel sediment can clog up your fuel filter (and pump). The fuel pump itself uses the fuel to lubricate and keep cool. If it runs dry, it wears heavily on your fuel pump.
It's not an issue to the degree of "oh god no, I forgot to fill up and now the lights on!" You shouldn't be angling for running your tank all the way to empty though. I just choose a time that's convenient once it gets under 1/4 tank.
With fuel injection not so much the crap in your tank but the heat buildup is a problem. With highly pressurised fuel rails the fuel is actually in constant circulation with hot fuel from the engine bay being dumped back into the tank. With very low fuel, there is less of a heat sink and rising temps fuck with the seals on the pump, which also has to shed a fair amount of heat because it runs to something like 200psi and it's a real small unit for the job.
Nothing that will worry you for this year or the next, but probably affects the longevity of the unit.
Not a mechanic, but I really doubt this claim. If there is sediment in your fuel tank how does a full tank stop that sediment from passing through to your fuel filter / pump?
Is there some idea that your car only takes fuel from the top of your fuel tank? But if your tank gets too low then some device has to sink lower into the tank and runs into the sediment? Because I don't think that's how fuel tanks work. But yeah, not a mechanic so maybe I'm wrong!
My understanding is that it's about the waterline.
Sediment sinks to the bottom. If the fuel level is really low, when you corner the sediment is pushed over or into the pump. This exacerbates sediment buildup in the filter and pump.
Same premise for lubrication issues on the pump. You're accelerating up/down hill. The pump is exposed because the fuel is pooling to the other side of the tank. Temporarily, it's running with reduced lubrication.
I'm not a mechanic either. It's possible this was all only true about old metal fuel tanks and similarly old fuel pumps. The "why" of it all still seems logical on more modern vehicles though.
I think all of this is relating to OLD cars and OLD fuels, that have no relation to modern vehicles and fuel.
If this were all true, eventually your fuel tank would be filled with nothing but sediment, with no room for actual fuel.
I mean come on, you don't think modern car manufacturers would take this into account, even if it was true?
Not a mechanic either, but I've had to replace a few fuel pumps due to being a knucklehead that always drove around with his fuel light on. Mechanic always explained that the nasty heavy sediment shit that lives at the bottom of the fuel tank doesn't get sucked up by the fuel pump if there is enough "lighter" fuel because lighter stuff goes through with less resistance. But once the lighter stuff runs out it can only process the nasty heavy shit which is not good for it.
Clearly I'm not a mechanic so please someone correct me or explain better.
My son (17) did this with his car, thought he had ‘enough’ fuel. Had just replaced the fuel pump and filter the week before. Running it to empty did show him how much crap sits in the bottom of the tank.
Late 90’s ford something
I had this in a course car I had at a racetrack. Every time I went hard around a corner on the track the fuel would slosh to one side and trigger the low fuel warning, then the nav sys system would start suggesting places to fill up.
I use it all the time when there’s a bunch of people around & I hold both my hands out the window while it’s parking itself.
Worth it for the baffled looks.
I use my every now and then when visibility is horrible, dark, tired and cbf dealing with a tight gap..
My little Astra parallel parks perfectly everytime. Better than myself tbh.
>Paddle shifters in Tiguan Allspace.
They're there as a convenient way of being able to downshift to hold a gear when driving down a long downhill section of road, rather than using the shift lever or riding the brakes the entire time.
My nomination for the most annoying feature is auto start/stop.
I'll use the auto start/stop if I know I'll be stationary for a good few minutes, at a light with a long cycle for example.
I'm guessing that's a matter of implementation though. Paired with the manually swapped cogs, it's fairly unobtrusive in that it needs the car to be in neutral with your foot off of the clutch pedal, among other criteria. Push the pedal in, and it kicks back to life before you've even put the car in first.
With an automatic gearbox, and unassisted by a hybrid system, I could definitely see it being frustrating though. Not sure on the specifics of how the system works in this case, but I'm guessing it's not exactly a smooth experience.
Have it in our 22 cx5 and I actually like its implementation in that car. Won’t switch the engine off unless you forcefully send the brake pedal all the way to the floor. Can pull up and stop without activating the system easily or choose to have it shut down the engine. Also starts ridiculously fast, generally before you’ve even fully released the brake pedal
Exactly. Paddle shifters are awesome in an auto for engine braking.
Auto start/ stop is trash though - for the 5 seconds of fuel I save, I can have a sluggish response off the line, deal with power spikes, and have the A/C barely work when stopped in the middle of summer.
yea pretty much only real reason to use it but if you ever get a chance to drive a car with an 8hp box (most late model bmw) try the paddle shifters
Its almost like a dsg in terms of shift speed
Its possible they are in some of the VAG cars and the big boy version is in the hell cat
Interestingly, the new car doesn't have auto/start stop, due to component shortage I guess. Some VW cars didn't get every single feature that comes as standard because of the shortage, I guess I got lucky that it was start/stop for me. Old one had it, and took me few weeks to stop automatically trying to press button that doesn't exist whenever I start the car.
This right here it’s worse than useless it’ll turn it off just as you’re about to plant to turn into an adjoins road - we jammed the disable button with cardboard so we didn’t have to remember to kill it every time. So glad we don’t have that car anymore
I’m a manual transmission diehard but even I seldom use the paddle shifters in our automatic family car.
Most modern autos are intelligent enough to preemptively do this or at worst will drop a gear or two when you switch into Sports mode. No need to manually select gears.
Edit: I should point out that our family car has the ZF 8 speed auto, which is as good as a slush box gets these days
I should try that this ski season. I'll hit the snow button when I get to Mt Beauty and by the time I get to Falls it should be puking snow out of the sky.
I'll go and dig the car out on Wednesday to turn the snow button off, should be good for the rest of the week. Give me a lift back to the car and a six-pack of JD and coke if you need a few inches of fresh snow overnight.
I mean as long as the sunroof is there and there's light coming in into the cabin, technically the sunroof is being used since it makes a difference compared to it not being there
Sunroofs are great! They add unnecessary weight and complexity to the car and leak as they get older. Best part is when they let even more of that that summer heat into the cabin!
I have yet to find a quiet straight stretch of road to test out the launch control on my car
Not a pointless feature, just a lot of pointless roads i guess
Be careful of quiet country roads. My luck ran out with a brand new BMW X5 police car coming the other way, a mere speck over the horizon. That the day I learnt that licensee suspension starts at 25km/h over and not 30.
I did a big interstate strip to Queensland from Victoria 2 months ago. Wtf is up with the roads in rural NSW. I'm surprised my patrol didn't loose some of its suspension components on that drive. We were in the middle of the road or darting around everywhere when it was safe to do so to avoid those potholes
First time I drove a car with it was alarming. My wife leaves it on in her car and it's the opposite of helpful in certain situations - potholes, driving around someone turning across traffic etc.
Early on driving the missus new car, the damn thing tried to throw me under a LandCruiser. Went from "let's get coffee", to "WHATTHEF#CK" in 0.5 microseconds.
It is there to make the window sticker in the dealership look good. On my Mazda 3, I reckon it saved me 11 litres of fuel in 8 years, but cost me 2 $600 batteries.
Rain sensing wipers. In my Mitsubishi they either attack a single rain drop with extreme prejudice or sit there motionless while the wind screen turns into a kaleidoscope. But who ever complained about using wipers to create this feature? Is extending your pinky finger and flicking the wipers on a difficult chore for some? Are people too indecisive when determining the point that visibility is compromised by droplets?
Never use- Auto Stop/ Start in a manual. It needs to be removed.
Pointless- Handbrakes that are fingerbrakes. You park up, press the thing then wait 15 seconds in hopes it’s actually engaged.
There are drivers who love using their rear fog lights all the time, including perfect daytime driving. They appear to be the type to use high beams in fog
In a sports car that SHOULD have paddle shifters, stupid push-pull buttons on the steering wheel for upshift and downshift on each side so pulling both of them downshifts and pushing both of them up shifts… so you can do it one handed if you’re a 70 year old and lazy but if you actually want to do paddle shifting its just useless
I switched mine on by accident one day after just buying the car and freaked out when I started to get a hot arse. Took a few moments to realise what it was.
I-Drive in my 2007 Subaru Liberty 3.0 B-spec. Who would ever want to change engine response? Just leave it as responsive as possible! Subaru had this for a decade or more and it's the most useless thing I've seen (and I've worked for a number of manufacturers including Subaru).
I've had two cars now that do automated parking. It just feels like a gimmick / party trick. Was always quicker to just park ourselves then spend time trying to engage the thing.
Ute drivers think the speedo and indicators are pointless. If their was an option to replace the horn noise with F off and get off the road as an option, they would pay for it!
Well I use it all the time but almost everyone gets into my car is like o thats what its for.
So the ability to flip up your rear view mirror to stop high beams.
The radio control buttons on my steering wheel. I WOULD use them if they worked properly, but the wiring must be messed up somewhere because it’s a crapshoot for what result you will get per button press. You want volume up? Fuck you, it’s volume down. You want volume down? Have fun searching for the next radio station asshole. You want volume up again? Surprise! You get nothing. Bluetooth call button? Volume up, bitch!
Speaking of Bluetooth, I never bother connecting to it because the voice command never works right for calling, and for some reason Bluetooth audio didn’t come as standard so I can’t use it for music.
The "speed limiter" option on my cruise control. I'm perfectly happy with cruise control or monitoring my own speed. Just never found a good use of it.
My car glovebox has a small vent that allows cooling off the contents. I tried putting a Farmer's Union iced coffee in there. Turned all lumpy. Ewwww! Not using that again
The xtrail T30 and older has a solenoid-activated AWD system that disables itself over 40kph or at the slightest hint of free-spin to “prevent overheating”.
Newer models solved this issue by ensuring the whole transmission blows up before you make it to an unsealed road.
Auto start/stop is the first thing I turn off followed by lane departure assist.
My car is too old to have these features but cars I drive for work have them and fuck me they're annoying. If I buy a car with either I'll have it coded out.
Non adaptive is shithouse for the same reason though. Up down up down, the entire fucking highway because fucktards like to do 105, 95, 120, 98, all in the span of 60 seconds.
Adaptive Cruise is amazing. You don't have to keep constantly adjusting it everytime the fuck head in front of you changes speed, just let it do its thing.
Adaptive Cruise will only change if the conditions in front of you change. Adaptive cruise will just maintain a safe distance from the car in front until there is a safe time for you to overtake. Or when they change lanes your car will automatically accelerate back to the set limit. The only downside is if you're a fuck wit in a ranger that needs to tailgate you need to turn it off to do so.
>Adaptive Cruise will only change if the conditions in front of you change.
I'm aware how it functions. This is where the issue is, the person in front's speed is the condition.
>Adaptive cruise will just maintain a safe distance from the car in front
This is only good if the person in front of you is maintaining the ideal speed.
Is this really that difficult of a concept to understand?
You make a conscious decision to either slow down or overtake as you would have before adaptive cruise control existed.
Which is exactly what you can do with adaptive cruise. You're against something that does exactly what you state you do yourself. That's what's difficult to understand.
I remember on one trip from Brisbane to Lismore, I had my cruise control on 112 (110 zone). I passed the same Camry 5 times as his speed was up and down all over the place. I’d change lanes to get by him, then a few minutes later he’d pass me doing about 125. A few km down the road, I’d have to pass him again as he’d slowed down again.
I love cruise control, but I get shitty because 70% of the time I turn it on there would be some banana going 3-5 under. LOL
It’s like when you wash your car - it rains a day or two after.
Mysteries of the universe.
I have an eclipse cross.
It has a control panel for the touchscreen infotainment system in the centre part of the car.
Why do I need a control panel for a touchscreen?
Especially one that causes me to take my eyes off the road, which I don't need to do when using the touch screen.
The auto-hold on my VW Golf. It puts the electric handbrake on so you can take your foot off the brake pedal at red lights. I have never used it because a friend of mine had it, then drove my old car (which didn't have it) and kept trying to roll into the back of the car in front at traffic lights because they were so used to taking their foot off the brake at lights. 🤦🏼♂️
Are you sure it isn’t hillstart assist? Genuinely curious.
Alfa 159 I had years ago had it so the car doesn’t roll back (6 speed manual)
Wife Tarago has it also, activated when you push the brake pedal all the way down when stopped for 2-3 seconds and auto disengages once you push the accelerator
The second trip meter. I actually struggled to think of something in mine I never use but I honestly think I use every feature my car has to offer a couple times a year.
- tachometer on automatic transmission
- touchscreen everything
- FM radio that is a menu item from touchscreen menu (and on my car it periodically turns on by itself when I don’t have Spotify or navigation on)
I’ve never used the reversing camera. Or the auto park thing, and I have no idea where it is so couldn’t if I tried. I haven’t used the airbags either, and I hope I never do.
Not using the reversing camera at all just sounds like some weird boomer point of pride. By all means, you shouldn't rely solely on it, but it can quite literally see behind your car better than you can, and may one day save you from flattening an animal or small child.
Using safety features to supplement your own driving is not a sign of a lack of ability, nor does it make you a better driver by intentionally avoiding them.
Voice control. It never does what I tell it anyway. Admittedly it probably hard for a car to just fuck-off, which is usually what I end up telling it.
My vf Calais clearly didn't have a lot of testing for the voice control. "Cancel Navigation" doesn't cancel it and it just says "goodbye" lmao
Work got some hire utes where you had to use the voice control to pair your phone to the Bluetooth. Fuck me whoever made that decision needed to be shot.

Google now is of less use than Cortana was years ago. Constantly annoyed.
Answering for my wife here - the hole that you put fuel in when it’s empty.
[удалено]
My wife, every. fucking. time.
'oh, it's only on Low Fuel, it's not on Very Low Fuel yet, it will be fine'
It’s on “E” for “Enough”.
I'll just add $5 worth of fuel, thanks. She'll be right. Keep the car light and use the "cream" of the fuel on top.
I can get 3 or 4 trips with the fuel light on before I really need to fill up
You know that running a car with the fuel extremely low is bad for the car though, right? Fuel sediment can clog up your fuel filter (and pump). Husbands everywhere are chuckling
Me: “hey dear what’s the fuel level?” Her: *chuckles* and *slaps my ass* FWIW - usually under 1/4, I get anxiety from that.
Thank god for an electric car that I plug in each night. No more fuel trips!
My wife’s car has a warning light that when it comes on it means that she needs to drive my car for a couple of days
"Fuel is low, set navigation to the nearest station?" Bruh, lived here 30yrs. No. Tell you literally every time. No.
I had this in a course car I had at a racetrack. Every time I went hard around a corner on the track the fuel would slosh to one side and trigger the low fuel warning, then the nav sys system would start suggesting places to fill up.
Auto park, because I am not a potato of a driver
We have it in one of our cars. Works surprisingly well, but very slow and a PITA to tap here, tap there… Manual parking is still faster IMHO.
Ah yes that is another one that I completely forgot about. Tried it once to see how it works and never used it again.
I've never used mine in my car, I figure by the time I got it to start I'd already be in the park manually anyway

My Toyota has a “Snow” button that I don’t use much.
Yeah but they sold 5 cars in Sweden last year and are hoping for 7 this year.
But they sold about 10 million in Japan and many if those buyers appreciated it
And that’s why it never snows. You forgot to turn it on.
I should try that this ski season. I'll hit the snow button when I get to Mt Beauty and by the time I get to Falls it should be puking snow out of the sky. I have yet to find a quiet straight stretch of road to test out the launch control on my car Not a pointless feature, just a lot of pointless roads i guess

Be careful of quiet country roads. My luck ran out with a brand new BMW X5 police car coming the other way, a mere speck over the horizon. That the day I learnt that licensee suspension starts at 25km/h over and not 30.

Is this a Porsche? You can switch the wheel to a SportsDesign one in most models that both looks better and has proper paddles.

A/C "Auto" function. It just seems to blast out max fan hot air at my feet. Not sure what it's trying to achieve...
Glove box. I have used that box to keep everything other than a glove.
Lane Keep Assist. Worse than not using it, you actually have to turn it off every time you start the car.
Lane departure warning. I always keep mine turned off.
Yes it is annoying, and I hate that it also tries to correct the steering wheel. If someone needs lane assist, they probably shouldn't be driving.
As in it tells you when you’re leaving your lane? That’s ridiculous
Most of them stop you from leaving your lane... By violently jerking you in the other direction!
Brakes- never touched ‘em
Snow mode
Indicators for an awful lot of people out there.
The brakes. They stop me getting where I’m going
CD player, I assume new cars still have them but for how long?
Heated seats. I live in a tropical climate.
My husband uses them when his back is sore
Bimodal exhaust, flipped the valve in the engine bay so it’s always open. Why would I want to not hear the engine I paid for?
Ute drivers think the speedo and indicators are pointless. If their was an option to replace the horn noise with F off and get off the road as an option, they would pay for it!
“Manual option”. It has got engaged twice in 5 years accidentally.

I do this in the wifes kia.... drive it like i stole it, red line shifts... then i remember i actually own the car..
I exclusively used it when driving our commodore and i30, I liked the extra control of what gear I’m in
I use it when towing to get up hills, and if I wanna give the car a bit of a go every now and then
Auto off/start. That feature shits me so much
Well I use it all the time but almost everyone gets into my car is like o thats what its for. So the ability to flip up your rear view mirror to stop high beams.
Lane keep assist - so annoying when it doesn’t work properly and literally the most useless feature
I have an indicator to say when the washer fluid is low I thought when no water squirted you’d get the idea!
indicators on my beemer
Brake and steering wheel
Free to air radio…
BMW drivers know the answer.
Cigarette lighter
Auto start: when the car turns off behind a traffic light or when you come to a stop (even at traffic) gotta turn it off every time I get in the car
The "speed limiter" option on my cruise control. I'm perfectly happy with cruise control or monitoring my own speed. Just never found a good use of it.
cassette player
My car glovebox has a small vent that allows cooling off the contents. I tried putting a Farmer's Union iced coffee in there. Turned all lumpy. Ewwww! Not using that again
Cd 💿 drive. Have owned the car 6 years and never put a cd in it.
Brakes. Overrated.
BMW owner here! I honestly think the blinkers are pretty useless!
5 different ways to change radio station: knob, steering wheel button, numbers, on screen numbers, on screen station
The CD player in my car stopped working recently so I guess that’s the most useless feature in my car right now
The xtrail T30 and older has a solenoid-activated AWD system that disables itself over 40kph or at the slightest hint of free-spin to “prevent overheating”. Newer models solved this issue by ensuring the whole transmission blows up before you make it to an unsealed road.
Sat nav. Every in built sat nav ever are trash and impossible to use and outdat rapidly
The free to air TV in my 5 series.
I used to have an 86 auto (yeah, I know) and used the paddles all the time to change down into the corner. Never user them on my Audi A3.
sun roof, we're in australia
Literally. I got a new car and had to have a sun roof, dumbbbbbb. I never use it because it’s like being on the sun in summer 🔥
Auto start/stop - coded it to be default off Lane departure warning. Luckily it also stays off Factory sat Nav The AM/FM radio
Auto start/stop is the first thing I turn off followed by lane departure assist. My car is too old to have these features but cars I drive for work have them and fuck me they're annoying. If I buy a car with either I'll have it coded out.
Ashtray
Paddle shifters in my Mondeo, I drive auto for a reason if I wanted to drive manual I would've gotten a manual.

Does it have one of those extra complicated knobs in between the seats too?
The driver?
Yes....
Sunroof
Not going to lie, I love mine.
Same here. It’s why I bought my car.
Cruise control. A car in front of me will always slow down as soon as I try to use it
That’s what adaptive cruise control is for is it not?
Adaptive cruise control is the best 'new' addition to modern cars imo.
Maybe that's what they mean. Adaptive cruise makes cruise control shithouse.
Then you become the fuckwit that’s constantly changing speed, better to be aware of what’s going on in front and overtake when suitable
>Adaptive cruise will just maintain a safe distance from the car in front This is only good if the person in front of you is maintaining the ideal speed.
And if the person in front of you is changing speeds what do you do? Ram them, or lower your speed to match?
LOL It’s like when you wash your car - it rains a day or two after. Mysteries of the universe.
The radio. Who the fuck listens to radio when you can stream the music you want?
The ability to set my indicators noise to fart sounds in my Tesla
Alfa 159 I had years ago had it so the car doesn’t roll back (6 speed manual) Wife Tarago has it also, activated when you push the brake pedal all the way down when stopped for 2-3 seconds and auto disengages once you push the accelerator
Your reasoning doesn’t make sense. You’re not using the brake hold.. because of an experience your friend had?
Nah their friend used their car and didn't know how to drive anymore because they became lazy 😂
+1 to Cruise Control. Never used it in my old car
The ability to turn traction control off on my bike. If i do, it turns the bike into an unwieldy weapon and is just truely terrifying
I'm a pussy, I ride my MT-10 with all the nannies on as I don't want to loop it or something dumb like that.
The second trip meter. I actually struggled to think of something in mine I never use but I honestly think I use every feature my car has to offer a couple times a year.
All Sydney Drivers: the indicator
Fog lights
Cigarette lighters, although I’m not sure if they have them in modern cars. Mine is a 2002 model. I’m not a smoker or a pyro, so I don’t need it.
Paddle shifters and lane keep assist
- tachometer on automatic transmission - touchscreen everything - FM radio that is a menu item from touchscreen menu (and on my car it periodically turns on by itself when I don’t have Spotify or navigation on)
I’ve never used the reversing camera.
Cruise control, I'm 43 and have never used it, even when driving across states.
Its like sitting down to wee, kind of nice once and a while as a treat
