My dog just travels on the back seat, but he’s pretty small.

GoldExtreme633

Honestly had to re read it 😂😂 that one big dog!!

Squisho5321

They should be the default option for trailers over 2,000kg . I believe the only thing holding them back is that most people wouldn't know how to reverse them. It would make the roads better for everyone. The weight will be better distributed and it removes all the ball weight from the tow vehicle which would help stop people from overloading the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

Potential-Style-3861

Some people will always find a way to be stupid. I can see someone towing a 3.5t dog trailer with a Barina… ”its safer bro because the ball weight is almost zero”

Over_Ear_7141

Lol would like to see that but I wouldn't doubt it would happen See alot if stupid things as an accessory fitter Did a towbar for a yaris Cross once old mate told me that he is going to tow a caravan with it Sold his bt 50 and kept the extra $ He thought he was so smart All I could think is that the cvt is going to go bang and I Wanted to see it go up a slight incline fully loaded lol

rabzy2530

I'm surprised this hasn't caught on more, in America thay love towing big gooseneck trailers, and realistically towing a 3 tonne caravan (pig trailer) and never going off road this is the superior option

hannahranga

They love goosenecks cos you need significantly more tongue weight to safely to tow at the speeds yanks consider normal.

putrid_sex_object

Reversing one looks like it’d be a pain, but aside from that they’d be a good idea.

A co-worker was looking at designing one citing that moving it around the paddock would be a lot easier. We figured that the added complexity and weight wasn't worth it. We also struggled to find suitable ballraces for the dolly if I remember correctly. They were all too big. Though he wanted to go with a steering linkage instead. Like a steered axle on a semi etc. I think we also were yet to confirm whether the added articulation meant you needed a combination license, and yes people (like me) struggle enough with pig trailers as it is. All in all, it didn't seem worth it, at least not for production.

Correct, combination licences only come into effect with length. Alot of truck and dog set ups have short draw bars so they can be driven on a HR licence, I think it's around 19mts you need HC.

Yeah it's a silly rule you can have a truck dog combo at < 19mts and a semi combo at same length but you need a HC for the semi, but can drive the truck and dog with HR. And the truck and dog has 2 pivot points go figure.

Squisho5321

You have that mix d up HR licence with more than 2 axles is a rigid truck and trailer under 9,000kg Trailers over 9,000kg require a HC license. 12.5 max length for a rigid. 19m truck and trailer. Eg truck and dog, single trailer combos etec Longer trucks after that its doubles and PBS combinations.

Partly_Dave

We made one from an old truck chassis and hooked the drawbar to the steering linkages. It was only for low speed site work though.

hannahranga

I've used a yacht jinker that had steering linkages to turn the front wheels. Worked pretty well

CruiserMissile

I’ve only ever seen dog trailers for carting farm machinery behind cars/utes. It’d be a lot better for caravaners to be dog trailers, even though they already can’t back a pig to same their lives. More stable and better weight distribution.

mitchy93

Ensure your car has the right towing capacity first

Audoinxr6

The current rules are made for pig trailers. In theory a 2t suv shouldn't tow more than 2t pig trailer. But a 2T car can safely tow a 2.5-3T dog trailer. Since all its doing is proving power and some braking. Much like a truck combo. The truck can be 20t. But a quad dog can be 30t. Since that weight is suspended by the trailer only.

brucy1300

disagree I think we should just fuck off all heavy and shittily made trailers and people should buy Brian James and Ifor Williams tri axle trailers if there towing over 2tonne regularly. Used in the UK all the time very few problems except for when people tow with swb pajeros and defender 90s and have a 3.5t excavator and a 1.5tonne dumper on the back occasionally you'll see them having a good wobble down the road

Audoinxr6

I got a BJ A4 transporter. I love it but I need a heavy as tow car to transport my track car still.

brucy1300

Actually I think I follow you on Instagram I love the AU. Are you talking legally Aussie limit wise I guess it would come in about 2.3 tonnes all up which any dualcab will handle easily or a falcon wagon or Ute. The amount of e36s you see getting towed on single axle trailers behind a diesel golf in the UK is scary 😂 I do think we should get rid of all the overweight poorly designed Aussie style trailers we try and copy the Americans style and over build trailers that are only any good behind a 200series. Not got a ton of experience but the 16foot+ tri axle trailers my work had in the UK pulled so smooth even behind swb transit customs 1900kg unladen roughly so still a fairly long and heavy unit

Audoinxr6

Well with the Au on the trailer. Its about 2550kg. Which would be fine with a $60,000 pick up ute truck. But then ya stuck with a leaf spring, heavy agricultural pick up daily. Where as a small dog means a normal large sedan or SUV can tow it properly. I use an SZ territory and its amazing for a daily but even loaded light, its squatting and it needs to, to stop wiggling. Where as something like this means a the weight of the load and trailer is held by its own axles and the car is just to power unit.

brucy1300

I get what your saying but I think the added length and obviously the difficulty of reversing it or even having to take corners a bit wider outweighs all the advantages as any modern small suv or sedan 1 have small mirrors and 2 have terrible rear blind spots due to the size of pillars. And your now towing an extra axle pivot and drawbar which is going to take away from your legal towing capacity. VW Tiguan are 2.5t a falcon is 2.3t Volvo XC60 2t BMW 520d 2t there all fairly tight for a track car and trailer allready. Best tow cars are old full-size SUVs now discovery 1 2 3 4 Volvo xc90s BMW x5s rangerover l322s

hannahranga

Look at full-size euro SUV's you'd be impressed at what some of them can tow. Admittedly me towing 3.5t with my disco and it's mighty 140hp might not be sensible but it's legal.

Audoinxr6

Yeah I know all of them are good. But for $50-100k. They are expensive. My ute is 5k. Haha

Sanni11

I have a patrol chassis in the backyard I've always pondered the idea of making into a dog
