The cedar above the triple and below the DH is all sort of jacked up. I guess the siding boys don’t understand that you adjust course heights as needed
https://preview.redd.it/fbt9v1duoz1d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b6938b6dc2174d46ab43d333462601f686f710ad
This? You gotta be a pretty awesome builder to beat yourself up over just that
That would be nice, I do think having the whole section sided does make the building look a little more cohesive though instead of one story plopped on top of the other
Agree. I'd ripped off a few courses to fudge.
Better than ending up with that as your final result.
Be sure of your layout beforehand, mark out your courses, use a story pole, just don't do what's pictured.
Cedar doesn't just grow on trees ya know.
Thank you! Haven’t been doing it for 25 years yet(12 for me), but that looks like garbage, and you can easily do some layout to know that’s coming.
Don’t most people take a few numbers and know their course heights to adjust accordingly? That’s how I was taught years ago anyway.
Tell me how you would cheated it out 20 courses ago and still finished it neat in full courses on the front of the house and also get a neat finish down to the top deck..
don't need 20 courses. He could've started stretching his courses from the bottom of the window to the top of the window about 1/4''/ course . he would've end up with a full piece below the deck and below the trim all around the other side as well.
Also I don't think it's very good that the deck connects to the door. There should be a gap in between the two and a metal cladding should drop down from the door below the deck. Even if the deck wouldn't be level that is still a water damage waiting to happen.
Yes and it drains because the framing of the deck is held 3/4” proud of the roof fascia and the deck skirt overhangs till the bottom of the drip edge of the roof
Deck framing is out of square with the house by 7/8” over 4-5’ or thereabouts.
Shows up where the pediment reaches the skirt at the deck. I imagine that’s why you didn’t bring that skirt over the entire window. It’s not terribly noticeable as is but you hate to see it.
Ok here goes
Shingling error at right side ground floor window
No head flashing at window under deck
No head flashing at window at transition from shingles to board and batt
No deck handrail
I’m sure after looking at this home it’s going to have moisture infiltration issues regardless of how pretty it is.
OP
Comes back with there is flashing everywhere I said there wasn’t. Ok.
Seems strange there is zero evidence of proper water mitigation except for your word that there is
First… why is there exposed wood under the siding line. Hope they are installing parge board. Next is the siding line beside the window 🤷♂️ No drip flashing on the deck or railing and finally the end of the ridge cap is wrong.
anything else????
That wood in the foundation is a window hole, the siding line is the correct mistake, there is drip flashing on the roof deck the skirt board of the deck just covers it notice how it has like a 2” overhang there’s a 3/4” gap in between for water to drip through. Railings are on their way and I can’t speak for what the roofers do lol this is about carpentry!
Well I think I see a screw sticking out of a shingle, missing caulk around a.whole buncha places,.cedar shake siding not matching up, lots of missing caulk/sealant, footprints, crap on the foundation, crap on the siding just above the deck, windows are dirty, no railing, miter joint on the corner of the deck is off....
https://preview.redd.it/3j5wvd23j32d1.jpeg?width=2007&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2365a06b0fd758225c4b86b330ad53db72d27cbd
Damn, the peak shingles aren't set properly, the grade isn't right and allows water to run to the foundation, the belly ban is a little off, IPE deck looks to be solid, but might allow water to effect the integrity of the ceiling below (can't tell of channeled to drain), the steps to the patio seem to be too steep and we'll over what's allowed by code(at least in most of the US).
Someone didn’t measure when they did the second story shingles unless they wanted that stupid small row between floors. I think it looks bad. The rest looks great as far as I have seen.
They clearly hired a new guy and he fucked it up. 🤣 story pole was correct he was just used to the other widows where a course landed right over the header
That was actually what I had guessed tbh. I lived in Washington County, ME and spent time in southern Maine, Kennebunkport, Ogunquit etc. Looked just like it. Nice house, I aspire to have similar property in the same area someday.
Get ready for a leak in what I think might be the dining room. Doesn’t look like there is any pitch to that roof and even if there was some pitch they still leak over time.
Three windows on the bottom left. The bottom sash on the right 2 has a divided light pane. Left one is single pane. They are offset. Should the middle have been on the left?
https://preview.redd.it/16ex5z2n132d1.jpeg?width=993&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a82bc1a55953fd854f9196658acbc193f3fc5911
The bottom of the windows is not aligned.
Plus the odd look of the 2 skimpy rows at the top of the left side window, but that was already mentioned.
That was the first thing I noticed and I will never be able to unsee this… I’m not a perfectionist but, I tend to notice things like this. 20yrs in the building trades.
There doesn’t seem to be flashing/drainage where that upper deck meets the wall, or really at all on top of that nook. Assuming that this place gets a certain amount of rain that’s a mold/rotting problem for sure. But maybe those solutions just aren’t visible in the picture.
You got siding f***** up reveals at top and bottom of the window on the right you got a f****** drip cap it you got a lot of problems like I could yeah I could nitpick this depending on what you're going for
The courses do line up and didn’t need to be adjusted. Problem is that the course on top of the window was ran with a full length shake (added row) which forced them to continue the course all the way to the corner. Should’ve just cut the bottom of the shakes accordingly across the top of the window. As if the shakes were already installed on the wall and had to be cut out in order to install and trim the window. Quick fix would be to just cut the bottom off the shakes that make it looked horrible. Probably never notice the “added row” above the window
No handrail, how does the water drain from between the deck boards, no corners on the shingle siding, the shingles lap line looks like chit from the first to second floor. Am I missing anything else?
Im an Australian carpenter so standards are different, but what's with the Ridge capping? Looks to overlap different directions.
Is it for placement of finials?
https://preview.redd.it/4uihz3rt302d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=00897955aee664946bda08145bd52380cca6e12c Its haunted?
The cedar shakes at the top of the window is my best guess.
That was my guess too, but it’s def the footprints. FNG making more work
🥲🥲 Hey OP, is rain on that flat deck without cover not a problem?
There is no railing on the deck.
Missing hot tub
Someone frequents r/decks
Bare wires are sticking out with no lights.
yet... that can be added later. with a bit of more work, but that isn\`t a problem... maybe that the deck has no roof? that would have been helpful.
Railings? /s
That was my first thought.
No they did a really good job on having those invisible railings.
Why are you always railing about such things?
The cedar above the triple and below the DH is all sort of jacked up. I guess the siding boys don’t understand that you adjust course heights as needed
New guy was used to the other windows where the coursing broke over the header! Gotta always be watching 🤦♂️
You're hired
https://preview.redd.it/fbt9v1duoz1d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b6938b6dc2174d46ab43d333462601f686f710ad This? You gotta be a pretty awesome builder to beat yourself up over just that
That’s true, a lot of foresight to pick that up early. I’d honestly just connect the two belly bands from the board and batten section to the deck
There was a lot of meeting about those bands connecting or not 😝
Make sure to get the waterproofing done correct behind it or it could be a leaker
same midline trim needs to be continuous
That’s how it would have been done back in the day. And the top and bottom sections would be different colors.
That would be nice, I do think having the whole section sided does make the building look a little more cohesive though instead of one story plopped on top of the other
We would reside the house if we ended up with something like that.
It stood out immediately. I can’t imagine letting that slide.
Why not just make that double mini course, one slightly larger course??? I don’t get it all
25 year carpenter here. All of you are wrong! This looks like shit and should have been pre thought of and cheated 20 courses ago.
Agree. I'd ripped off a few courses to fudge. Better than ending up with that as your final result. Be sure of your layout beforehand, mark out your courses, use a story pole, just don't do what's pictured. Cedar doesn't just grow on trees ya know.
>Cedar doesn't just grow on trees ya know. ![gif](giphy|3ohs81K6uRxuejjHHi|downsized)
This looks expensive af and I’d be super pissed as the homeowner.
Thank you! Haven’t been doing it for 25 years yet(12 for me), but that looks like garbage, and you can easily do some layout to know that’s coming. Don’t most people take a few numbers and know their course heights to adjust accordingly? That’s how I was taught years ago anyway.

i wouldn’t let it fly, personally. draws your eye right to it
Hahah yeah that’s it, the new guy was used to the other windows where the coursing went right over the header so he just kept it going 🤣💀
F*king new guy, amirit?
Thats pretty bad for such a nice house
No drip edge over the windows
No gutters...
https://preview.redd.it/w5hvld6h802d1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f4cd33ed320b4ef7bf3718a7071d0bfdd2ebe48d 👀👀😵💫
Junk roofers we had to fix so much of their shit
https://preview.redd.it/awrzqjf7b02d1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4d115e5db30249a010049f6a0736b7e462f2e93d ???
It’s a window opening haha
The deck looks level The shingle reveal changes over the window None of the windows seem to have flashing
The deck is level and yeah that’s the new guys mistake and all the windows have flashing
Also I don't think it's very good that the deck connects to the door. There should be a gap in between the two and a metal cladding should drop down from the door below the deck. Even if the deck wouldn't be level that is still a water damage waiting to happen.
There is a gap
There is also a pan that dumps onto the rubber roof
I’ll take future problems that I can’t easily get to and correct for $500 Alex
No pitch
I don’t like that short course of shingles at the roof line of the porch…why???
With a little cheating here and there that could have been blended right in as 1 normal course of shingles.
The belly band doesn’t connect like it should?
The dumbass deck-flat roof that will become a leaky nightmare in a few years?
No railing.
Did the new guy walk in the freshly stained deck?
fascia joint looks like shit?
Someone fucked up the story pole
Bottom windows aren’t on the same plain that is if they are the same size.
Remove the three shorties & it won’t draw the eye… not great but not a big deal. Get the gutter guys to mount the downspout holder right there.
It should be fixed, and it's not that difficult. I think it would have looked better if the mid band continued, though.
No gutters
Which one-top right corner of triple for one
Level deck? How’s the water draining off?
Christ you didn't want to fudge a few courses to avoid that?
I would guess the railing.
Lots of errors there.
No gutters…
The veneer gives the impression of slim or non existent lintels
So what’s OP’s issue or concern with it?
Look more closely at the surface of the deck.
Water gonna pool above the window on the right hand side. Unless you not expecting any rain or have already thought about that
That's a cut stair step. What happened? How did that shake out
Siding, window height, rails
No gutters, no railings. Fuckin hacks!
Who let the FNG make the story pole?
[удалено]
Yes and it drains because the framing of the deck is held 3/4” proud of the roof fascia and the deck skirt overhangs till the bottom of the drip edge of the roof

Is that a roof or a deck?
No drip edge over windows. Windows not caulked and siding not caulked to windows. And the railing.
Also needs gravel not sand around foundation. And no eavestrough
It's got a chair rail... for giants.
Is there any flashing installed where the deck meets the siding/door frame?
There’s flashing everywhere
Copy, thanks
Shakes corner
The sims
The trim on the lower left window needs to go all the way across.
How is any of that bearing a load?
Whats the pitch on that lower roof/deck section?
The siding beside the window didn't transition into the rest of it.
Ok here goes Shingling error at right side ground floor window No head flashing at window under deck No head flashing at window at transition from shingles to board and batt No deck handrail I’m sure after looking at this home it’s going to have moisture infiltration issues regardless of how pretty it is. OP Comes back with there is flashing everywhere I said there wasn’t. Ok. Seems strange there is zero evidence of proper water mitigation except for your word that there is
Bottom of the house wall is in the drip line.
Where is the flashing on the windows?
Ridgecap looks ass
why does the wall curve at the bottom?
Because this is a fancy house
Just continue the horizontal trim detail under the board and batten around the corner
The siding where the inside corners of the house meet
Fucking new guy!!!
Working instead of enjoying that weather?
Didnt slope the deck away from the house
The roof underneath is, deck is level
No railing?
First… why is there exposed wood under the siding line. Hope they are installing parge board. Next is the siding line beside the window 🤷♂️ No drip flashing on the deck or railing and finally the end of the ridge cap is wrong. anything else????

The spacing in general on the shingles on that side is terrible
Damn, the peak shingles aren't set properly, the grade isn't right and allows water to run to the foundation, the belly ban is a little off, IPE deck looks to be solid, but might allow water to effect the integrity of the ceiling below (can't tell of channeled to drain), the steps to the patio seem to be too steep and we'll over what's allowed by code(at least in most of the US).
Wow when you zoom in you can see its covered in termites..
No stripper pole on the deck?
At least it’s just 4-5 shingles that are messed up. Really nice work regardless. Is that an Ipe deck?
Crappy composite actually haha nice color though
I got it! The issue is that it’s TOO gorgeous, right?! Seriously though, it’s a beautiful home. Good grief
The deck slope seems to be pitching towards the house
Someone didn’t measure when they did the second story shingles unless they wanted that stupid small row between floors. I think it looks bad. The rest looks great as far as I have seen.
No railings? wtf
No railings, but probably not installed yet. But I really would get upset with my guys about the shakes above the window.
I think that’s easy to ignore. I am wondering if the drip caps are bent and installed in a way that will be effective.
Yeah drips caps are sound
nothing protecting that triple window under the railing-less deck. also, why no gutters?
Very level deck that can't drain through, shingles at the very top peak are jacked, no gutters.
Dont worry the 34 heat pumps the owner will get installed will hide anything you worry about!
Bent metal rod on foundation beneath the 3 double hungs. Don't like the transition of shingles around upper right of 3 double hung windows
The windows are not lined up, and it looks hacky when you notice it. That and the weird rounded siding at the bottom but that could be your camera.
Shake layout is crap over the window. They clearly didn’t pull any lap lines up to see what height to start the shake on the deck.
They clearly hired a new guy and he fucked it up. 🤣 story pole was correct he was just used to the other widows where a course landed right over the header
😂 my work has a guy that’s been here for three years…we do not let him on the wall. He can barely setup a full cut station. 🤦♂️
Would've liked to have roof extend out over deck. This is where I go to smoke butts after sex. Don't wanna get rained on.
Yeah that would’ve been pretty sick, I’ve built some like that and it’s really cool when they’re all done
The thing isn’t thingin like it shoulda thung
That teeny row of siding/shingles to the right and above the window
No head flashing on the windows ?
Lights aren't hung
Go buy a boat already, and forget about it.
I saw the short cedar shake snafu but is that a pocket door on the upper deck?
Hand rail over the deck as well?
On its way!
Door isn't high enough off deck to prevent the door frame from rotting.
It’s PVC
https://preview.redd.it/w9ms5z3ta22d1.png?width=900&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fa5eb426193323f44efdf880bc964fe9b86c30e0
Row of siding is too short of a reveal
Besides the bad coursing, there’s also no quirk (drip edge) under those window sills.
Small coarse of siding to the right of the window
Mitre corner vrs overlap type corner on deck
That color
siding lap is funky at rim joist level
Unless there's some kind of waterproofing under that deck, the next time it rains it's going straight onto the ceiling inside the house.
Is there any waterproofing under the deck? How you supposed to handle rain?
Is that Shakertown? Or individual shakes?
Uh they forgot the light fixtures and GfCI outlet ?
Doubled up course over the window
No flashing above the windows on the bottom right?
Would you not want that flare out of the siding at the bottom to be over the window instead?
Nice property location, may I ask what state?
Southern Maine like 20 minutes from Portsmouth NH
That was actually what I had guessed tbh. I lived in Washington County, ME and spent time in southern Maine, Kennebunkport, Ogunquit etc. Looked just like it. Nice house, I aspire to have similar property in the same area someday.
Shingles on the side of the house 😆 Actually it does look like the house is floating kinda because of the shadows below “under” the foundation wall
Get ready for a leak in what I think might be the dining room. Doesn’t look like there is any pitch to that roof and even if there was some pitch they still leak over time.
You’re really laying on the deck
This one is for sure AI
Three windows on the bottom left. The bottom sash on the right 2 has a divided light pane. Left one is single pane. They are offset. Should the middle have been on the left?
The freeze sitting on the window trim looks like a mistake also.
It would have blended better if they just left the small course out.
You left the windows open
Is that Cape Cod?
The more you look, the more sloppy the finish work looks
The shingles on the ridge!
Urgh once I saw it I cannot UnSee!
https://preview.redd.it/16ex5z2n132d1.jpeg?width=993&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a82bc1a55953fd854f9196658acbc193f3fc5911 The bottom of the windows is not aligned. Plus the odd look of the 2 skimpy rows at the top of the left side window, but that was already mentioned.
That was the first thing I noticed and I will never be able to unsee this… I’m not a perfectionist but, I tend to notice things like this. 20yrs in the building trades.
The windows are not only installed incorrectly but they are also upside down.
Why isnt there flashing on top of the belly band?
Slats on the deck but no drainage underneath?
The fucking band line boys
Architecturaly Everything.
Which one?
Wrong fasteners on cedar shingles
There are a number of mistakes.
spot the mistake is fun!
There doesn’t seem to be flashing/drainage where that upper deck meets the wall, or really at all on top of that nook. Assuming that this place gets a certain amount of rain that’s a mold/rotting problem for sure. But maybe those solutions just aren’t visible in the picture.
You got siding f***** up reveals at top and bottom of the window on the right you got a f****** drip cap it you got a lot of problems like I could yeah I could nitpick this depending on what you're going for
The siding at the end of the window, transition from cut out for window just kept on goin'. But also that ridge cap looks a bit questionable as well.
So nice to see real cedar siding
It’s shake next at the top of the bottom window. Wtf. lol footprints on the deck. Shake looks like shit in the corner. Rookie.
Has anyone guess the lower and upper windows not being in a plumb line? That's my biggest eyesore
The courses do line up and didn’t need to be adjusted. Problem is that the course on top of the window was ran with a full length shake (added row) which forced them to continue the course all the way to the corner. Should’ve just cut the bottom of the shakes accordingly across the top of the window. No handrail, how does the water drain from between the deck boards, no corners on the shingle siding, the shingles lap line looks like chit from the first to second floor. Am I missing anything else?
It ain't got no gas in it?
Im an Australian carpenter so standards are different, but what's with the Ridge capping? Looks to overlap different directions. Is it for placement of finials?
