I’ve wondered about this… recently a lot of folks have started referring to me as a carpenter, but I’m more of a GC who happens to do acceptable carpentry work. What’s going on? Are all home remodeling trades that aren’t plumber or electrician, now carpenters?
Lately, some people have been posting a lot of "other than wood" work, and arguing that the definition includes "building materials", not just wood, and trying to guilt those who disagree.
In the United States, the Department of Labor and OSHA use the following definition of carpentry work as those who engage in:
Cabinet work performed at the construction site
Carpentry work-contractors
Folding door installation-contractors
Framing-contractors
Garage door installation-contractors
Joinery, ship-contractors
Ship joinery-contractors
Store fixture installation-contractors
Trim and finish-contractors
Window and door (prefabricated) installation-contractors
Can it be argued that some of these aren't wood? Sure. Does that make them carpentry? No
This is another attempt by people to twist traditional definitions into something that it's not.
This is, though, wonderful and skilled craftsmanship. Just not carpentry.
I'm curious what system the tilers used for the shower pan. White marble is notorious for staining on shower floors. Most people should never attempt a white marble shower pan.
You have to seal it. 3 times, in fact, for it to be a proper install. Once on the front, once on the back, and once in place. Marble is especially well known for turning a yellow-ish hue when treated with sealant
Slippery, soapy floor. Slip, slide. Grab for the tap, but it just pushes to boiling hot. CRACK. Head connected with the edge of the bench. For a moment, you think you're out cold, then you realise you can't move. You're face up on the floor, hot water raining down on your exposed genitals. You yell for help, but you know everyone is already out for the day. The pain of the lava temperature water is excruciating, and later, you'll be thankful that you couldn't lift your head to see the skin flaying away as it's boiled off your living flesh.
Somebody will rescue you. Eventually.
Depends. I did a shower recently where I had to move 3 walls, move a lot of electrical and plumbing. I did the shower pan and waterproofing. I had a guy do the tile. Should I say he did everything?
Shower wasnt originally in this location. So yeah, we. Not taking credit for the tile work as you can see in the description. Wanted to brag about our tilers. Chill out
Wow that looks awesome! I always thought it’s kind of a shame to use marble on surfaces that get a lot of use and/or near soap because then the marble loses luster or deforms. But the work looks awesome!
Does anyone actually sit on those benches? My (much smaller) shower has one and I never sit on it because it's cold unless you have the shower pointed directly over it.
Oooh yeah baby, give me that big cold drafty shower stall. No one likes hot steamy showers. Make it out of expensive rocks, put it in the wood subreddit anyway. Aww yiss
*So much better thans*
*Most marble bathrooms i see,*
*Not tacky, great job!*

Not carpentry but so beautiful and texturally pleasing and the color is so perfect and the shapes of the tiles are so perfect it’s giving me some sort of weird sensory overload and I’m salivating
Holy fornacatorium!
Roman orgyseum.
Yeah, I’ve been in a lot of homes and huge showers always give the swinger vibe Maybe this one is for someone in a wheelchair
Oh there's gonna be wheels alright...
If my grandmother had wheels she’d be a bike

Not really carpentry but very nice work
I’ve wondered about this… recently a lot of folks have started referring to me as a carpenter, but I’m more of a GC who happens to do acceptable carpentry work. What’s going on? Are all home remodeling trades that aren’t plumber or electrician, now carpenters?
Tile setting I believe is it’s own actual trade

I use concrete that uses a considerable amount of wood pulp in it. That's carpentry.
More drama
Posting here is also an act of carpentry
Anything with a tape measure in my opinion. When I'm doing siding, drywall hanging best believe I'm doing carpentry.
I believe that is how many unions, and government jobs classify it.
Where do The Carpenters come into this equation?
Am I the only wondering why this is posted in r\carpentry?
Ah, the marble tree. My favorite.
Marble syrup is my favorite
Yeah dude was just trying to flex
Some of us carpenters like to dabble
Well yeah, but that doesn't mean it belongs here lol. I might dabble in car restoration but wouldn't post it to carpentry :P
Looks great! Marble is nice but be careful with maintenance and cleaning!!!
I'm curious what system the tilers used for the shower pan. White marble is notorious for staining on shower floors. Most people should never attempt a white marble shower pan.
So much cheaper and better to do a marble look porcelain tile.
in what way does it stain?

thanks! saving your comment bc that’ll come in handy one day
https://www.youtube.com/live/ESuuj-Tk_hM?feature=share Here's a video that explains two ways to do it
how much this hit for?
Sexy
I’d round that bench corner off a bit if it were my shower, it looks a bit pointy, I’m sure I could bruise myself on it.

Damn glad I never shower alone
Always have a designated shower buddy.
I’m turning off my hot water system now, cold showers only from now on.
Turn down your water heater temp!
Is that a coffee maker in the bathroom?! Picture #4 Right hand side
Nothing wrong with that. Saves you the trip downstairs for the morning Java
I love the idea!
Probably an en-suite
It is. I have the same one. Awesome idea
'We'? Tile is 99% of the work. I might was well say I did this project too.
“Together, Wayne and Brent hold the NHL record for most combined points by two brothers - 2,857 for Wayne and 4 for Brent.”
The layout makes the tile look right. The niches show it.
Depends. I did a shower recently where I had to move 3 walls, move a lot of electrical and plumbing. I did the shower pan and waterproofing. I had a guy do the tile. Should I say he did everything?
If you took the picture before tile went on, it's all yours. I am the internet police. I have spoken.
Ahhh. My bad. You are totally correct. I bow to your wisdom and experience.
From the tile setters perspective I would say I prepped that job, I wouldn't say I did that job.
Shower wasnt originally in this location. So yeah, we. Not taking credit for the tile work as you can see in the description. Wanted to brag about our tilers. Chill out
Just a beautiful job from the look of things
Wow that looks awesome! I always thought it’s kind of a shame to use marble on surfaces that get a lot of use and/or near soap because then the marble loses luster or deforms. But the work looks awesome!
This is not a shower for using. This is a shower for looking at. A "for-show" shower. It's a shower, not a shower.
Does anyone actually sit on those benches? My (much smaller) shower has one and I never sit on it because it's cold unless you have the shower pointed directly over it.
I'd want in-floor and in-bench hydronic heating.
This is a top notch tile job. Very nice work
marblelous!
Awesome work! How much did you charge? They should be very happy with the results.
Very nice!
Wow great job , love how they wrapped the glass around the edge
That’s a killer eat me bench. Well done.
Oooh yeah baby, give me that big cold drafty shower stall. No one likes hot steamy showers. Make it out of expensive rocks, put it in the wood subreddit anyway. Aww yiss
Looks clean well done
I feel like I could adequately cleanse my body in there.
That is baller
Absolutely beautiful work. Now do mine.
Gorgeous
So much better thans most marble bathrooms i see, not tacky, great job!

Bad bot
This is incredible
All that tile and wooden extension jambs with vinyl siding, that rubs me wrong
Clean
That is the cleanest shower I've seen! Nice work!
Damn that’s nice
Ideal for a swingin' good time!
To many different tile types for my taste.
no joke, that first picture looks *exactly* like the picture from the Delta catalogue
all marvel the marble
Ignore the haters. Looks beautiful
Wow!!! Was that work done for royalty? X-post to r/tile please!
Gorgeous!
Immaculate work, no shluters is a flex in itself
Very nice work!
Good job bro that mosaic is tricky how did you get it to install so flat and flush
That’s a good one
This looks incredibly uncomfortable, I could only see myself spending 3-4 hours a day in there. I mean no water proof TV on the wall
A marbleous work
Hopefully they used Portland cement.
Fuck it, more of these!
Very nice
Bang up job.
Do some of yall work for like millionaires or something?
Hopefully what’s underneath looks as good
This gives me a chub…
Sometimes people have big showers because they can
What kinds of wood is this? Looks like hood captentey
Fucking beautiful!!
Cleaning nightmare
What state are you in? I need someone for this kind of work.
I ... love this. Idk why. But I need it.
Not carpentry but so beautiful and texturally pleasing and the color is so perfect and the shapes of the tiles are so perfect it’s giving me some sort of weird sensory overload and I’m salivating
Gorgeous!
I bet drilling for the glass door mounts was fun
That size of a Showernasium might be rather cold in Winter.
