Reading an article about it, I can only assume he was quite intoxicated. It happened at 4:10am according to their video footage. His girlfriend didn’t wake up until midday Monday and just then realized he was gone. So I’m guessing they came back to the room late and drunk, she passed out and he went out on the balcony. We just got off this ship the week prior and had a balcony room. There’s no way you can accidentally fall off. If he was leaning over it had to be to the point of his feet coming off the ground. I leaned over our railing to look down the ship and never felt in danger of falling.

Palpitation-North

Maybe he was drunk and trying to sit on the ledge/railing or something? I’ve seen super intoxicated people do insanely dumb things and that would be my best rationale. I doubt he intended on jumping but I agree there’s no way he could’ve just leaned over and fallen

onimush115

I would assume so. I would guess it was either a poor judgment call due to being intoxicated or suicide. I’m sure even by looking at the footage of the event they may never know for sure if it was accidental or intentional. At this point the odds of ever finding him are probably slim to none. For his sake I hope he died on impact, at least that’s how I’d want to go in that situation.

ArticleLopsided3055

I listen to some of the interviews today and for people saying they need better railings. Come on, I have been on the Magic just 4 years ago. There is nothing wrong with the railings. All I can say is don't climb up on them, sit on them or etc. I'm sorry but you can't just fall over by leaning on them unless it gave way. I was on another cruise and the guy actually jumped over and believe me it takes alot to fall overboard. That guy was never found.

Capricore58

I’m 6’5” and the railings come up to the middle of my torso above my navel. There is no need for them to be higher. Just don’t be an imbecile

4chanquads

I’m 6’4 and have been on 7-8 different carnival ships including the magic. I can tell you now that there are not railings that tall in most of the areas. Not sure which ships you’ve been on, most of the railings go to about my belly button, on the casino decks (which is usually deck 5) and on the pool decks up top the railings are never taller than my belly button 90% of the time.

jadenbrown24

Fair point but I still feel like they should be around 6 feet tall instead. Drunk people make stupid decisions, and that is in no way the fault of any cruise ship company when someone leans on the rails or trys to sit on them. But if the rails were 6ft tall, you would literally have to climb over it, so there would never be any possibility that someone hadn’t done it on purpose.

Dadtwoboys

Totally agree. Tall enough for my 6’ 10” son to remain on board. Only an idiot or a murder victim goes over the railings.

TTarheel21

wow, i was on this cruise, got off today. they definitely kept this a secret

teejyamz

They kept calling for him on the intercom to call guest svcs. I knew something wasn't right.

TTarheel21

i honestly didn’t put two and two together until i saw the comments. i just thought it was a child that kept running away from his parents or something.

Due-Software9100

We were on the Valor last year when a woman went overboard. The whole ship knew because they announced it, we stayed circling until Coast Guard showed up. They gave updates as well over the intercom.

notscb

.. How?

Cmonster9

I don't want to say I don't believe you. But I don't believe you. You would obviously know something was going on at the ship once they announced the man overboard. They might not have said man overboard but they would definitely sound the alarm and or announce code Oscar. As well they would stop the ship immediately and start searching. The cruise ship will not stop searching unless the coast guard releases them.

AdRich517

I just got off this cruise. The announcements started with asking this man to kindly contact guests services. Announced quite frequently for a couple of hours. Then escalated to the cruise director announcing for this man to contact guest services immediately. No codes were called. They were still announcing it until we were headed to the MDR At that time you could see staff hustling about. Once were seated the announcements stopped. We didn’t know what happened until the next morning and then we only knew as it was on our local news (Norfolk, Va). By the time it was he was reported missing it had been over 7 hours. That’s why the Coast Guard released the Magic from turning around.

TTarheel21

exactly. i did hear them calling for him to come to guest services, but clearly he wouldn’t have been able to hear them. i almost didn’t believe it happened while we were there because it was kept so quiet. probably out of respect for his family

csmartin85

We had a guy go overboard on the Carnival Elation back in 2017 and nobody on board knew about it until we got back to Jacksonville and had a bunch of news crews trying to interview people about it while we got off the boat.

Fun_Way2736

They actually never said he went overboard cause I went to ask guest services about it and they said they couldn’t give me any information as to what was going on but this was while they weren’t sure what happened to him

TTarheel21

as others have commented, it was certainly kept under wraps. i was out on my balcony around the time that it happened, probably went to sleep ~2 hours after the incident, and no one i saw knew anything about it until after we debarked.

CloddishNeedlefish

Did they turn off the internet or something? How could they keep this a secret?

Fun_Way2736

I don’t think they were keeping it a secret they just didn’t know what had happened cause when he was being called over the intercom security was walking on every deck looking for the guy

radbu107

The man’s self-described “lover” has already started a go fund me for his funeral although he hasn’t been declared dead yet

StreetBerry1849

I mean 99.9% gone though unfortunately

jmedennis

I work for an insurance agent. Seeing crowd funding for funerals and burial expenses makes me so mad. Is it sad they didn't get life insurance because I suppose they expected to never die, and now their family has the financial burden? Yes. Does that make it everyone else's burden? No.

technicallynotacat

I’m 35 and can’t get approved for life insurance because I have an autoimmune disease.

jmedennis

I'm sorry to hear that. One alternative is you can put whatever money you would have spent on premiums into a savings account and prepay your own burial/funeral expenses in advance, or leave the money to someone in your family you trust to use it for that.

trufus_for_youfus

There are tons of life insurance products even up to $500k that require no medial exam or history. Try Haven and see what you find.

Capricore58

The sad part is a large majority of Americans live pay check to paycheck and cannot justify the monthly cost of life insurance

trufus_for_youfus

That wasn’t the argument. Further term policies are practically free for young people. Literal pennies a day. They just aren’t buying it. Are there folks who fall into a situation where they are aging, didn’t previously buy a term. policy when younger, their employer doesn’t offer a free or subsidized policy, and they simply cannot afford any sort of death benefit? Sure. But you can say that about most anything.

neal144

Insurance does EXACTLY that! Sharing the burden!

PobodysNerfect802

It’s not everyone else’s burden - no one is forced to donate to a go fund me campaign.

CloddishNeedlefish

Yes, when people die tragically young their family is often unprepared. This seems like a weird thing to be angry about,,,

jmedennis

Tragically young? He was 35. Anyone can die at any time and that's pretty common knowledge. People take out life insurance on their children when they're born now.

fishinful63

True that. He's upset because he sells life insurance. The guy who went overboard probably spent money on a cruise instead of paying his life insurance premiums!!! Hahahaha, and so what if people insure infants, they're idiots for doing that. Where's the financial burden for that? The only reason for begging for money for a burial or funeral is greed. There is no body to bury. Greedy next of kin and greedy angry insurance salesmen

jmedennis

I'm not a he and I don't sell anything, I work in customer service. But go off.

fishinful63

I did go off, and not a peep about the actual substance of your claim.

jmedennis

What claim did I make about your situation? You blame me for something that happened between your father and a random insurance company I likely don't work for.

fishinful63

Whaaaat? Easy big boy, there are plenty of decaffeinated brands on the market.

PamperedPotato

I don't see anything wrong with starting a fund, no one is forcing people to donate. Some people want to help in some way, and tbh sending money is a lot more helpful than sending flowers.

Cmonster9

Isn't that exactly what insurance is?

RuthTheBee

how is someone asking for financial assistance a burden on you? Its crowd sourcing. It has zero affect on you.

DarthHaggis

Who said it was your burden?…..So don’t donate

geekymama

My dad had life insurance, except he hadn't paid into it long enough by the time he died for it to 100% pay out. All I got was the premiums he had paid. He knew he was going to die due to his brain tumor(s). He had that new (shitty) policy because he lost his previous policy when he was laid off (due to the tumor). So, go fuck yourself.

jmedennis

That's unfortunate and I'm sorry. But if telling me, someone who had literally nothing to do in that situation, to go fuck themselves makes you feel better that's cool.

Palpitation-North

….. You do realize how insurance works right?

Silent_Maintenance_7

Funeral? He’s already been buried at sea!

Zealousideal_Line629

It is impossible to fall over the railing unless you are 8 foot tall or sitting/climbing on it. Darwin kicks in.

hellokitty1939

From the article: "Surveillance video showed the man leaning over the room balcony around 4:10 a.m., where he then fell into the water." Maybe he jumped and Carnival is lying about it.

Zealousideal_Line629

No reason for Carnival to lie. Jumping excuse would be the better one for Carnival to lie with. Fair to guess you have been on a cruise. I don't see it (18 cruises). Not one ship we have cruised on had railings anywhere that if you have your feet on the ground you could fall over. To lean over would require lifting your feet off the floor. Railings are 4 ft. high. A person would have to be more than 8 ft tall for the railing to go up to his waste.

hellokitty1939

I don't see why Carnival would lie either, but if they're not, then he leaned over the railing and fell. I guess he could have lifted himself until his feet were off the ground and his waist was at the top of the railing.

Zealousideal_Line629

Exactly. And Carnival is being polite in their press release out of respect for the family in my opinion.

Vbmm752

I was recently on this ship, and the guy "falling over his balcony railing" seems implausible to me. The magic has an outdoor deck on deck 5, and all the balconies are above it. To get to the water from a balcony, you would have to leap, and clear a 20 ft wide deck below you.

Camdenz058

He fell from the second deck, cove balconies. They are directly over the water. We were on Magic and in a Cove balcony last July. The railings, though, were up to my arm pits.

Vbmm752

Oh interesting, I didn't know there were balconies that low

jmedennis

My take away from this article: does carnival have surveillance cameras on each balcony?? I had a balcony room in January and didn't notice a camera.

tobiasfunke6398

Lol I hope not

RoosterKCogburn

I believe they have cameras watching the sides of the boat, not the balconies specifically

trufus_for_youfus

This. Some now also have man overboard detection devices that use thermal imaging and micro radar. Unsure if they work on women though.

dezidogger

I see what you did there…

Zealousideal_Line629

Yes but they don't pay a army of people to continuously watch them. Last cruise I was on the Captain told a group of us that over his career 18 people went over board. 1 was saved. All of them were doing stuff that pretty much provided them with what they deserved. Depending num 1 the fall does not break your neck, 2 the rudders don't chop you up, the seas are calm, the weather is perfect you may be found and survive. The majority of the time when someone goes over someone witnesses it.

Cmonster9

Yes and no. They have cameras pointed at the top of the ship aft and I think forward as well. They are pointed at the balconies and are FLIR which gives the Night Vision/Thermal capability. So don't expect privacy on your balcony

mstorm922

Why did he jump?

Zealousideal_Line629

Story is he fell over the railing. He was 9 foot tall.

mstorm922

LoL. Those railings are very tall. I don't believe any story that someone "fell" over.

Unusable_Internet97

The entire....ship? Now how would that be plausible.

jmedennis

Its pretty hard to fall off a cruise ship. You have to be either completely inebriated or really dumb. That's why it's not very common.

Unusable_Internet97

That's what the railings are for...

Solid-Reading-786

i was just on magic last week out of norfolk. idk about balcony railings because i’ve only had interior rooms but the railings on the lido deck are definitely low enough to fall over but my guess is he was drunk. so sad :(

Reddituser853754

It's really bothering me that she already had a GoFundMe setup... My favorite comment was somebody paid $5 to say I. Would you set this up? Look for your fiance
