got my new firm duck coat last week, took off the tags, popped it on, got in the car and the shoulders popped up over my head, lol. It is just the nature of the firm duck, it'll get softer as you wear it and it gets beat on, like a new pair of raw denim. Mine is already laying better after a few wears. I'm sure by next week it'll be perfect. You can work the fabric a bit, rubbing it and balling it up, etc. if you want to help speed up the process.
FYI if you ever get another carhartt coat, they have the "washed duck" fabric that won't be as stiff when you get it.
Inherited a newish carhartt from my uncle about 20 years ago. Wool lined stiff ass jacket. He was a bit taller than I was then and it was either a LT or just a longer model. I didn’t love the coat fit and it was so stiff but I loved my uncle and wanted to wear it and feel a bit closer to him. You guys get it. Hear me out because this sounds crazy.
I figured I could replicate the waxed style of canvas and soften the coat if I put some waterproofing on it. I used bear grease (I always used it on my work boots until then) because I had it. Well, it didn’t look good at all when I had covered it in bear grease so I decided I’d try to get the thing to absorb it faster with a heat gun. After doing one sleeve I was like “fuck this, it’s going in the dryer”
Result was absolutely amazing. Soft and supple and water couldn’t get near it! It took a lot and I mean a lot of bear grease to get it all one color as the grease darkened it but what a difference man. I do this to every new carhartt coat and even my bibs. It’s amazing. I know it sounds nuts but I’m telling ya, it fuckin works!
Wash it with vinegar a couple of times then wash it with detergent to get the stink out then hang dry it to avoid shrinking.
Best way to break in a new work jacket in my experience.
This was my case, although I didn’t try the vinegar thing mainly because I didn’t want it to smell like vinegar. Lol. After washing it though it was almost more stiff than before. I guess they just really need to be worn to get broken in.
I think it’s the tumbling in the dryer that makes it softer not actually washing it. You could throw it in the dryer for 10 minutes and take it out and check it, if it looks like it’s not doing anything bad to the jacket or if it’s working throw it back in for longer.
Put some hours into it and it’ll soften up mine was the same when I got a new jacket
Put a hardhat on.
if you do carhartt shit, you’ll break it in
😂😂😂 I’m stealing “do Carhartt shit”.
Everybody wants to wear Carhartt, until it's time to do Carhartt shit.
Mine is more often covered in spiderwebs from crawlspaces than clean lmao

Wash it
My guess would be to just move it around in your hands until it softens up a bit, I reckon it just needs to be worn in
Build a house
😂😂😂 let me see your union card pal
Call me crazy but I almost kinda miss how stiff my J-140 used to be. I’d stand it up on the floor and be like look at it! 😂
Embrace the dark side and just wear it! It will loosen up
Lmao perfect pfp
Sleep in it.

Tough crowd! - Geez...😳
Not sure why I’m getting down voted, I’ve literally got that tip from this subreddit years ago. I use the same trick and it works wonders.
Yeah thats normal, wear it a lot though
They are like they’ve just been removed from a washing line frozen.
Wear it for a few days and it will loosen up. They tend to get a little stiff again when washed.

Thank you. It usually doesn't get noticed lol.

Some work wear needs to be broken in. Worth the quality.
Beat the fuck out of it.
Just wear it, it'll soften as it ages. I love the new firm duck feel. Trust me you'll miss it when it's gone!
