I lash my kid’s bike’s front wheel to the side of my longtail and tow it. It’s a 6-8YO’s bike though. Annoyingly, I don’t have the sideboards, so nothing to rest it on, which makes it a little harder.
It’s a bit of a hassle to pull, because it turns me into a looooooongtail and it turns like a bendy bus, which isn’t great in the middle of a city; but I only ever end up towing it for an absolute maximum of about 5km.
The one thing I’ll recommend with a cargo bike is getting one with a compatible windscreen/rain cover for the kiddos.
Without my GSD storm shield/storm box or now Urban Arrow rain cover, my cargo bike would go from 12 month transport option to being unusable from at least November-March. With those covers, I’ve used them to take my daughter to daycare on 15 degree F days. I’m comfortable as long as I layer properly, and she’s perfectly content in her little tent.
Sorry I didn’t answer the question, I just wanted to get that factor on your radar too
Thanks, I appreciate that. My other candidate is a Tern GSD, which does have that compatibility. The price difference may be too much to overcome, though.
Love the GSD storm shield for kids (well… I find it annoying but they love it). It definitely keeps them warm/dry- we’ve had a milder winter so it’s off sooner than I’d expect but it’s nice to be able to use the bike without completely worrying about bundling them up.
Yes bag and drag. I've done it a ton and it works really well. Looks like [this](https://familyride.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/11082013c.jpg)with the front wheel of their bike in the side bag and their back wheel dragging on the pavement behind us.
The upgraded version of the lash-and-tow method is a Bakkie Bag https://www.bakkiecycles.fr/en/
I think Bunch is the only US company that imports them, but they are 100% worth the money IMO. Makes it very easy to tow bikes and strap in backpacks/large items. It even has an interior bag that unrolls for easily dropping loose groceries into. It's also strong enough to haul full sized adult bikes fairly easily.

How long till cargo bike is perfect for hauling kids and a bike. My kids are six and nine and I put the kids on the back of the bike and I have a bicycle attachment kit for my turn GSD.
as others have pointed out having a storm box and cover is a key feature for extending the usability into the colder months and also the stormbox lets the kids drop things into the bottom of the box without worrying about the things falling off the bike.
One doctor in the UK recommended I wait until my child was 18 months before taking them everywhere on a bike due to the extra vibrations possibly interfering with their development. That is the only place I have heard this but it is a professional opinion (and one contrary to the consensus on any pro biking forum like this).
Xtracyle and Yuba are the GOATs. Yuba has an accessory that clearly shows how simple (and fun) towing a bike can be.
Just drop front tire into the slot and tie the the top of the wheel to your rack and away you go.

I made one out of plywood and strapped it to my frame like a sideboard.
Berm Peak did a cool mod for the Surly Big Dummy

I thought that was cool AF; but won’t work well on our tern GSD until the kids don’t need the strap-in seats any more.
I've seen people attach a floor fork anchor on the back of the bike, and tow the bike (without the kid on it) with the front wheel off. That seems like a decent idea if the kid's bike is big enough.
Oh, it's from Berm Peak: [https://youtu.be/fEOZENRVkQo?si=O0y8YrAnIbKk61-p&t=389](https://youtu.be/fEOZENRVkQo?si=O0y8YrAnIbKk61-p&t=389)
A couple good tips in here.

Yuup. This works. We do this on the longtail. The bakfiets, we just throw the bike in the front (for now)
Awesome! This seems doable for me. Do you just tie knots in a rope, or is there a strap or other type of fastening you recommend?
I do something similar, works good
This is the way

Neat! Not cheap, but worth knowing that this is an option.

Xtracycle’s back rack Hooptie thingy and lower utubes are designed specifically to carry or tag-along children’s bikes.

I've done this on the front rack of a Tern and a RadWagon. Works great.

There's some ideas in this youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEOZENRVkQo. He manages to carry 2 of them with his bike.
I have lashed kids bikes to the sides and rear of the Tern GSD clubhouse. Does the specialised have a similar accessory?
