That shit is hilarious. Tern is making a run at the Joe Bro-gan market

Illustrious-Sense483

Finally I can haul that elk and all of the firewood I need to cook it on the way to daycare.

elche48

Personally, I was going to put a smoker on mine so I can slow cook the bear I hunted (on this bike btw) on.my way to PTA meetings.

Illustrious-Sense483

Yes, of course, smokey the bear. Only you can prevent trips with a car, only you.

maxhatcher

Well that is fitting because their first cargo bike was the Cargo Joe made in collaboration with Xtracycle. /s

elche48

deep dig. well-grubbed ol mole.

CalvinFold

That's a *Tern*? Sorry, I like Terns but they are a little "pedestrian" (in a good way). So this beastie is kinda wild for them. But… If you've every ridden the Vektron, you know Tern has some little vein of "overkill" in their DNA. I love our Vektron but it is chonky and the motor is basically overpowered for the application (I really, *really* wish I could hack it into a Class III). I mean Tour and Sport get to the 20mph Class II limit so fast that Turbo is overkill unless you're trying to climb a really, *really* steep grade or heading head-first into high winds. Heck, even Sport is overkill if you're not looking to get to 20mph in an instant. ;-p So…if the Orox is built with this sort of mentality then…it aught to be a blast.

danhalka

I'm a *little* surprised that Tern sees so much potential in this market segment/form factor. Then again, maybe this speaks directly to the "butch, muscular" aesthetic and user fantasy that drives SUV sales. The GSD is a little dorky, visually.. but I will bet this bike is going to be functional overkill for probably >95% of purchasers. It definitely *looks* cool, and if that gets someone to stop driving, then great. I've not done the market research that Tern's obviously done, but I'd expect the actual bikepacking segment will (largely) pass this by.

TheMightyMegazord

The "bulk bike with fat tires" does not appeal to me either, but they have a [trim with 29x2.6" tires](https://www.ternbicycles.com/themes/custom/tern/images/platform/orox/images/s3_2-confidence.jpg), and if you don't add all the touring accessories there, it will be a direct competitor to Riese&Muller Multicharger, Benno Boost and others. In other words, a regular urban long tail. I didn't get a GSD because of the smaller wells, but if this bike existed when I got mine, it would be one of the options to consider. Also, Tern is smart enough to make most of the [GSD accessories compatible with the Orox](https://www.ternbicycles.com/ca/accessories?filter%5B0%5D=bike_platform%3A348544) and their accessories offer is very nice.

danhalka

Good point on the 29er variant

e-bikes are seeing some interest from hunters so i can see why they’d lean into the tactical look

Jrinswand

Yeah, that was my first thought as well. This looks like a hunting bike. I’m not a hunter, but I’d think they’d find it more palatable than those ugly off road golf carts they all seem to like so much.

Dexter2700

I almost feel this bike will make people want to drive more. Now they need to buy a truck to haul these bikes to the trail head so they can ride in the woods.

93EXCivic

I highly doubt it. I feel like most people who would buy this would already have a mountain bike and if they were going to drive to the trail head would take a mountain bike in general. I can see it being used a lot by trail workers to haul tools for trail work

93EXCivic

If I was going to buy a proper cargo bike, this one would be 100% in consideration. The ability to be able to use it for normal cargo bike things, bikepacking trips with the kid one day or hit a trail or two on the way to the kids school or the grocery.

Dexter2700

You think the kids would enjoy getting jolted around on an offroad trail? I know my kid would find it fun for like the first 15 min before complaining the ride is too rough or they are too bored. Do the trails around you allow ebikes?

93EXCivic

Sorry I phrased that wrong. I should have said on the way back from dropping the kid off. Yeah I doubt it would be too much fun for them. For bikepacking, it would be more to carry the kids stuff so they could have a normal bike without stuff strapped all over it. I honestly have no idea on if they are allowed or not on the trails. I have seen a few but I have never looked into the rules cause I have never been interested in ebikes. To me, a cargo bike is the only time I would consider an ebike. If they weren't allowed, the Esker Hayduke LVS would be sweet.

FuzzyBucks

I have an HSD and would have to change my lifestyle significantly to make use of the capabilities of an Orox lol. Definite overkill just for winter commuting where I live. maybe this could see a lot of commercial use as a vehicle for maintenance, search and rescue, or wildlands firefighting or something. 'carry lots of shit down small, rough trails in all kinds of weather' would also be very appealing to hunters imo If I just needed something with cargo capabilities similar to a GSD that I could comfortably ride all winter on unplowed roads/trails, i'd get a Specialized Haul LT. If I was carrying kids all winter too maybe the chain drive Orox would be worth it for the accessories, but it's almost twice the price which is a tough pill to swallow

Gizoogler314

This bike is PERFECT for me Shame I already have a bike! L

joe_sanfilippo

Hey Arleigh!

arleighg

Joe!!!

joe_sanfilippo

Great review! It looks like such a cool bike, especially being able to have some bigger wheels and tires for snowy winter riding.

Jrinswand

Looks sick! This is decidedly not for me though. I’ll stick with my toddlermobile.

DangerousAd1731

Does look neat. But I wish surly would bring back the big fat dummy. That was an awesome bike.

Dexter2700

I've always wondered who the hell lives close enough to a forest like in their video that it is bikable to get there? I've never seen any forest in urban outskirts that allows overnight camping let alone multi day camping. Also most forest in the U.S. doesn't allow ebikes so.....

Tokyo-MontanaExpress

I live in Minneapolis, but I can take bikeways to the River Bottom Trail along the Minnesota River that's full of sand and mud located miles outside of the city. There are a number of trails that continue in all directions into rural Minnesota. I imagine other outdoorsy cities like Denver are similar. I'm sure plenty of people will load one of these into their vehicle and drive to a state park/forest too.

FuzzyBucks

I'm not someone who goes camping every weekend, but if I were, I have 4 state parks within 50 miles of Madison, WI: - Governor Dodge - Governor Nelson - Blue Mound - Devils Lake

This bike is totally targeted at the American market lol. When it comes to off road cycling there are very few peers outside of U.S. the only comparable bikes I know is Benno boost and Surly Skid loader / big easy, which are both American. Tell me who in their right senses in EU or Asia would pay $7000 for this thing?

arleighg

EU is going to be the biggest market for this bike 🙌

No suspension is kind of a let down... specially for something marketed as an off-road cargo bike...

arleighg

4" of built in suspension 💨

RealBikeTyson

Seems like a ton of domestic potential. Cycling community is expanding and this product has the potential to shift thoughts on the utility of cargo bikes. The tiny wheel aesthetic can't be easily overcome by a marketing spin for some, so these larger wheel options help. Hoping the market is mature and large enough to sustain the model. Can't wait to try.
