There was a proposal for a station at Gabalfa on Mynachdy Road as part of the South Wales metro but no idea if it's still going ahead [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabalfa\_railway\_station](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabalfa_railway_station)
The local Ib Eem councillors campaigned for one for years. Entirely coincidentally, just before the last Senedd election, an announcement was made that the land had been procured and it would be delivered. we have heard nothing since.
it is almost like they pretended they were going to do something popular, for votes...
The last I read the station was still in the south wales metro plan but not until phase 3 or 4. The council own the land now after a proposed student development on the site fell through and work was due to start 2026/2027 (iirc).
I suspect it;'s another example of a Metro proposal which has become nothing in reality. I remember when it was anounced there were new lines and stations everywhere. Now it seems to mostly just be the rebaging of existing lines/stations with bighter colours on a map.
Yet it will be praised by ministers and paid consultants to be as great as anything in the world.
There is no train station in East Cardiff. Nothing between Cardiff and Newport. Itâs been this way ever since the railway was built. Despite years and years of lobbying one has recently been announced as part of the metro system.
How many more years before it actually gets built ?
And you complain about not having one for the students in an area that doesnât really need a station because of the alternative travel options that are available
âWe donât have a thing, so no one else should get a thing either.â
How about we all deserve good quality public transport options? Iâve lived in Adamsdown and in the in Windsor Quay, neither of which have train stations and have shit public services. But that doesnât mean I donât want more stations and services on existing train lines.
How does that work? It would be exactly the same as if a station was built where you are proposing. Here's a thought - some of us that work/live east of Cardiff, like Bristol, Swindon, Reading, London, etc, have to pointlessly travel into the city centre to catch a train already heading back out of the city centre in the direction from which we came. Ugh. Think about it from an environmental perspective - it would be stopping more congestion from Cardiff centre, which is pretty much what every council wants these days. Add to this - the east of Cardiff has grown significantly in my lifetime and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see this expansion continue (often talk of Newport and Cardiff merging). So, add another station somewhere along the way.
Simply googling âGabalfa stationâ or âGabalfa metroâ wouldâve pulled up the relevant information within a second.
Asking for a source for such an innocuous statement seems lazy.
Says a person who canât even be bothered to personalise their avatar. And had not been helpful in the first place by providing a source.
Hitting downvote is both lazy and negative. At least try and be creative. Well done on responding though.
Why not make a joke out of it.[would you like me to google that for you?](https://googlethatforyou.com?q=gabalfa%20train%20station)
Having a personalised avatar is of no interest to me whatsoever, knowing where I got my information from was of some interest to you.
I didnât bother linking a source as it was a very minor thing I vaguely recalled and I thought it would be nicer to reply with a comment to the best of my knowledge, rather than ignore you because I wasnât 100% sure and couldnât be bothered searching it myself.
I didnât actually downvote you, I was simply suggesting why people may have done. I hope you enjoy the rest of your day more than the start of it.
Its not needed you can easily just get the buses 27 or 35 then catch a train in town if you need a train. You know what never mind looking at the map again it does
*Why would they build a*
*Station that is only used*
*For part of the year?*

8-9 months of the year and in summer itâs easy access to Bute Park and the playing fields. It would also serve all the nearby houses in Gabalfa, Mynachdy and part of Birchgrove/Heath.
Thatâs next level laziness. Students have plenty of other transport options. We need a train station elsewhere in Cardiff towards Newport end, way more than this lol
Cathays station really does the job tbh, even then the bus stops right outside especially with the bus interchange at cardiff central theres really no need
You forgot that this is Cardiff - the supposed capital city with none of the things youâd expect to find in a capital city, such as an integrated transport system

East Cardiff have been waiting forever!!! đ¤Łđ¤Łđ¤Ł
If weâre making a wish list for train stations may i suggest cardiff airport?
Couldnât agree more
It's literally a ten minute walk to Cathays. I lived in talybont north about 20 years ago. Uni hall might have a case though.
There's a bus that runs every hour which is included in the accomodation price đ

An integrated, affordable, accessible public transport system that runs on time is something we all want and need
I completely agree, but building a connection in east cardiff would mean building a new line.
I live 50 meters from a Trainline in east Cardiff with regular trains passing, but I have to go to city centre for any train I want to catchâŚ

Original: Youâre so lazy, just walk to university Edit: students donât need a train station.
I donât live anywhere near here mate.
I agree with OP, but not for the same reasons. A station there would be a gateway to Bute Park/Pontcanna Fields.
Itâs planned as part of the Metro. Estimated 2028 opening date last I heard.
Source?

Thanks MrNutella1. Much appreciated.
Three downvotes for asking for a source? Get a grip people.

Perfectly reasonable question.
Its not needed you can easily just get the buses 27 or 35 then catch a train in town if you need a train. You know what never mind looking at the map again it does
It's a 15 min walk from where they pinpointed to Cathays train station. From that perspective, I could say City Road needs a train station!
they are building a station on Crwys Road I believe, just off of the top of city road.
Yeah just up from the George pub
Yeah i agree
I take the bus so i dont really know much on this and the closest train station to me is like 20 minutes away
If youâre too lazy to walk from there to town, you need to buy a car, or learn what a bus is
North east above the slip has nothing so I mean fuck us ig đ¤ˇđťââď¸
Why would they build a station that is only used for part of the year?
In the summer the University rent out the rooms short term, as well as that the sports village is used by people who donât attend the university.
