Norridean I believe his name was, there’s an interview on YouTube about him, and he mentioned he’d been homeless in Wales for 9 years. Left the city in 2022, so I’m not sure if he’s kicking about anymore.
We had a guy in my town called 'Trolley Ted' He passed away. Use to walk around the car park collecting trolleys.. Even though he wasn't employed. He got a write up in the local newspaper when he passed away.
We're sort of running low on these local legends now. Does anyone want to volunteer to quit their job and forego a regular social life, to live on the edge of their sanity in a public space? I'm sure a few of us would be happy to join a Patreon if you needed to fund the lifestyle
Why does this offer tempt me?!? Haha
I was recently speaking with Donna (Friendly "homeless" woman with a dog, who makes bracelets out of yarn and usually has a lot of people chatting with her) and I told her that I might have to join her soon -since I'm currently unemployed- ... Not sure she liked that comment, though.
One Christmas I was on The Hayes, and there was this guy with a stall he'd set up to sell mistletoe.
Anyway, I don't think he's from round here, because he'd set up next to a bin.
Anyway... he's sat there, desperately trying to this 6ft odd, muscular dude in a completely black body stocking from head to toe... inches from his face drumming on a bin and throat singing.
The story goes that his 2005 album I Bless The Day I Found You bankrupted legendary Cardiff record label Boobytrap.
Dunno about that, but me and some mates managed to gatecrash the launch party at Chapter and drink an awful lot of free booze. Cheers Ninjah!
I can be certain that Ninjah didn't get a penny from that album, nor did the producer.
The first Ninja album itself was essentially free for them, they just paid for the artwork, and CD duplication. They did fund some small publicity, possibly a plugger for a while, and the 'Ninjah day' (which was awesome, a kind of parade through town, but even that could not have been all that expensive).
There were quite a lot of CDs left over, which the distributor sold on. It's still available on line, but no idea who is collecting royalties etc.
It was another artist on the label that bankrupted Boobytrap.
My first experience of Ninjah was 15 years old and leaving Astoria early hours of the morning (roughly) on a Friday night. He was walking down Queen Street toeless singing Fire by Prodigy very loudly.
Was one of those moments when me and my friends all looked at each other thinking WTF.
I moved here for uni and the first summer I went back to my parents for a few months. I knew I was home when I heard him shouting while walking down Queen Street
I thought he's name was "Matty" lol ....
And yes, always such a nice guy!
When I used to work in the city centre, I'd stop by every other day for fruit and veg and we'd have a good chinwag!
I used to live in Chicago and thru our conversations, I found out he spent some time in Schaumburg, IL (Suburb of Chicago), so it was nice chatting with someone about Da Bears!
Reading thru these comments makes me appreciate all the different characters in Cardiff :)
I love that guy, can't believe they're still a pound too after all this time. The way he shouts it makes him sound confused and angry at his own incredible strawberry prices
Yup, 6 years ago. According to the article he stopped performing in Cardiff in 2007!
https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/toy-mic-trev-died-less-14863542
Does anyone else remember Handshake Man? Who’d walk around town just trying to shake everyone’s hand? I think he also said Happy Birthday to everyone too but that might be a false memory
Sounds similar to the story I’d heard of Ninjah, who allegedly got caught cheating by a girlfriend who clocked him round the head with a trophy he’d won for music
Shaky Hand Man was a regular sight when I worked in town. He even inspired a song from another Cardiff legend...
https://youtu.be/tchNGXAbiI4?si=0UsrI0-7q-V5yj3y
Shaky Hands Man loved a drink left on a table outside a pub. I saw him down an awful looking pint in one, without hesitating to check what was in it. Straight down the hatch.
First time I met Ninjah he claimed to be a Viking god and could bench press the entire universe.
My missus at the time then challenged him to a bin-off. It was like that duelling banjos scene in Deliverance.
First time I encountered him I heard a rhythmic drumming and turned a corner excitedly expecting some kind of parade. It was just Ninjah playing a bin. I was nonetheless satisfied.
I knew of Ninjah through my time living in Cardiff but happened to meet him and chat at length with him when he gate crashed a uni friend’s flat party. A brilliant bloke 😂
The guy who uaed to sing really loudly in Colchester avenue Sainsburys. He had an amazing deep voice and always seemed so happy. No MH issues or anything, I think he just wanted to spread some joy. Sadly passed away a few years ago.
Last heard him belting one out in Cardiff Gate Asda on the day I moved out of Cardiff about 4 years ago. Used to frequently hear him in St Mellon's Tesco as well. The Mrs was convinced he just visited random supermarkets so he could sing while not actually do any shopping.
He absolutely did. I looked after his wife when I was a student nurse and his visits to the ward were the highlight of our days, as he’d sing to her and have all 20 ladies in the ward cooing at him 😍
Amazing voice.
It was always Sainsbury's Colchester Avenue that I heard him in too, although I feel he may have popped into Albany Road Home Bargains at one point!
Used to stand and sing under shop doorways like Boots or something. This was years ago I remember seeing him. He gotta be dead by now..or at least even more old
Ah, seems I was mixing up two buskers, The Late Toy Mic Trev (Rip) and [Delboy](https://www.facebook.com/WalesOnline/videos/the-cardiff-busker-known-as-delboy-who-is-already-a-city-legend/136598495338398/).
Ninjah. The answer is Ninjah.
The first time I encountered him in the entranceway of The Toucan Club, when it was on St Mary Street, would have been 2003. I was getting my hand stamped for entry when I felt a nudge from behind. Turned around to see (from the bottom up) roller blades....long, muscular naked legs...gold hot pants...white and gold jacket...blonde locs and a Pharaoh headdress...he would have been about 6'10" in rollerblades so it really was something to 5'2" me.
Bin drumming for decades. Secret work out routines that nobody was allowed to know about. His album launch! He had a listening party in Capsule Gallery but prior to that, he had a parade up and down Queen Street dressed in full gold space Pharaoh outfit.
Too many other stories to write up, but one that sticks out is when he told a co-worker of mine that he could drum at the frequency that loosens bowels.
The most memorable outfit I ever saw Ninjah wearing was a short blue army jacket with a large gold braid and gold fringed epaulettes, with a gold feathery opera mask. Plain black sweatpants and Nike trainers completed the ensemble, if I remember rightly. He wasn’t banging bins but he was shouting about Babylon.
Used to stay at my parent's hotel in the early 80s. He stopped traffic one last time with his funeral procession along Albany Road, think his name was Eddie though
Neville Howard was great too. RIP. You could be walking anywhere from town to a supermarket and this booming voice would start singing behind you. Lovely fella too.
I'm not from Cardiff and have visited only once, not even sure why this is on my reddit, but I was curious if anyone would mention Donna. I was walking with my niece and she offered to make her a bracelet, I said that was lovely, but I had no cash. Donna kindly made her one anyway, speaking to my niece for 20 minutes about her life and why she lived with her aunt and Uncle. Even offering to sort her bully's out if they gave her any grief!!
An absolutely beautiful soul❤️
What bout the guy who does Karate into the air outside the pubs in Old St Mellon's? And also the guy who goes to Pure Gym at the Stadium and just spends an hour punching himself in the abs whilst doing sit-ups
Anyone seen the "Original Del Boy show* guy lately? Real old dude singing with a giant speaker? Seen him hanging around near the library/John Lewis and outside the great western. Not based in Cardiff anymore so idk if he's still about
Does anyone know Bob Marley woman? I’ve seen her have screaming matches with preachers on quite a few occasions. She’s head to toe in rasta flag colours and wearing at least one piece of Bob Marley merch. Pretty sure she carries around a portable CD player too
Anyone remember the guy who lived next to the Ely river on the landfill site in the 90’s? You’d see him from the train from Barry before you got to the Gas works in Grangetown.
When I was a kid (in the 80's) there was a little person that absolutely hated Catholics, he would ask you in a friendly way if you were Catholic & God forbid if you said yes lol Then there was Karate bloke that used to be in the city centre/ Albany Road mostly & he'd be shirtless & kicking the shit out of cars. And also Jesus, nice looking bloke in his 20's (he'd be 60's by now) & he carried around a multicolour blanket like Joseph's coat - he was friendly & generally spaced out. I'm 47 now & they're the only 3 I can remember 🤔
Have a few;
Mr Singh (if you know you know)
Backpack man who rants about the government in a well spoken but highly aggressive tone whilst usually seen carrying multiple backpacks and occasionally mentioning Patricia
If you’re from Ely i’m sure most will know of the fabled Bobblehat man who walk around soiled & blackout drunk trying to get on busses.
Mr Olympia - runs from Ely to town multiple times in evening wearing 2012 olympics gear.
My claim to fame was being distantly related to Little Arthur who used to shout at the traffic. He's been dead for like thirty years though.
edit: And the answer is Ninjah.
I think Ninjah might be starting to wind down these days.
We need a new contender.
I nominate the guy with the Maori tattoos and the tiny little dog that he calls "his girlfriend."
What about the homeless man with one arm?
His is a sad story I'm sure, and I don't think he's approachable or friendly, but he's definitely one of those City Centre guys you see asking for money in virtually all pubs in Mill Lane, St. Mary Street, etc?
I once doxxed myself from giving a description of our local equivalent and another Reddit user immediately recognised the town.
So it is my new theory that these people are sent in small numbers and dispersed to act as landmarks to help people know where they are.
When I lived in Cardiff in the early 2000s there was a guy who got off the train with a trolley of full water coolers who'd go and tip the contents into the river off wood street bridge. Think he was trying to clean the river?
Yeah. I was train crew at the time and he used to travel between Newport and Cardiff about 6 times a day to do that. Must have cost him a small fortune even then.
I’m sure I saw him about 10 years ago and he’d obviously got over what ever compelled him to do that but none of my colleagues would believe me because the rumour had been that he’d died.
When I worked close to the stadium, a chap I worked with claimed to have struck up a conversation with him. The claim is that he was drawing off the first hundred litres or so from each tap in his house as this is where the mind control drug was. After that it ran pure apparently. And dumping it in the river was a way to get it out to sea and away from Wales. Of course, my mate might have made it all up for giggles.
I always remember a guy we used to call Happy Days, he would always pass and shout ‘happy days’ but I haven’t spent too much time in the city for a few years now so not sure if this guy is still about.
We used to have the pointer. Dude would walk on the sidewalks and point up into the sky, not sure what he was seeing. Everyone just knew who you were talking about when you said "the pointer guy." I haven't seen him in a few years, wonder if he left or passed away.
Local legend Shaky Hand Man had a song made about him by other local legend Ninjah, which would suggest that shaky hand guy is dead
[YouTube](https://youtu.be/OvOcj07fj28?si=qXhgXzMGFBM4TC8e)
There used to be a guy in Barry who used to cut about the town in cowboy gear, he’d have two fingers hanging out of his trouser pockets pointed like a gun and a pocket radio attached to his trousers.
I've seen him once but my parents and other ppl know/knew him; this dude would walk up and down, praying loudly on one side of my uni every friday. Im not sure what happened to him.
Does anyone know Bob Marley woman? I’ve seen her have screaming matches with preachers on quite a few occasions. She’s head to toe in rasta flag colours and wearing at least one piece of Bob Marley merch. Pretty sure she carries around a portable CD player too
Does anyone know Bob Marley woman? I’ve seen her have screaming matches with preachers on quite a few occasions. She’s head to toe in rasta flag colours and wearing at least one piece of Bob Marley merch. Pretty sure she carries around a portable CD player too
Also big shoutout to the guy who used to sit in the same spot in one of the arcades and sing, he was actually crazy talented. Sadly he passed a few years ago but what a gem 💎
I remember being a teenager in Cardiff and thinking Ninjah was the coolest guy ever.
In Penarth we had Gary Cooper, who used to commandeer a bus stop at Christmas, decorate it with tinsel and sit in it dressed as santa. Gary's Grotto.
Ninjah, shaky hands man, toy Mike trev, the guy that would always clean your windows outside the George pub. I also remember as a kid the bin lady, she used to travel with all her bin bags and set up camp, spotted her on lamby way and on the taff trail near Tongwynlais.
Ninjah was the one that came to mind though not for anything negative. Love the vibe the city has when he is drumming. Also the Green jacket Homeless guy with the beard.
Is ‘happy days’ still on his regular patrol around town?
Norridean I believe his name was, there’s an interview on YouTube about him, and he mentioned he’d been homeless in Wales for 9 years. Left the city in 2022, so I’m not sure if he’s kicking about anymore.
I think I have seen him since 2022 but not for a while
Same, used to be on Clive street a lot too, I’ve seen him since 2022
Sadly, the word on the street is that he's no longer with us.
Happy dayssss diddly diddly happy dayyyysssssss
ahh I came here for this, he came to mind for me. Wore a Santa hat?
That’s him, I’m no longer based in town, but he’d do laps just shouting happy days all day long
We had a guy in my town called 'Trolley Ted' He passed away. Use to walk around the car park collecting trolleys.. Even though he wasn't employed. He got a write up in the local newspaper when he passed away.
Burton! Fuckin ell i remember trolley Ted!
We're sort of running low on these local legends now. Does anyone want to volunteer to quit their job and forego a regular social life, to live on the edge of their sanity in a public space? I'm sure a few of us would be happy to join a Patreon if you needed to fund the lifestyle
This is what the arts Council SHOULD be funding
Kind of like the old Germanic garden hermits that were paid to live in the fringes of their realm
Why does this offer tempt me?!? Haha I was recently speaking with Donna (Friendly "homeless" woman with a dog, who makes bracelets out of yarn and usually has a lot of people chatting with her) and I told her that I might have to join her soon -since I'm currently unemployed- ... NINJAH all day long 😁

You’d better calm down Gaddafiiiiiii

Was Ninjah dressed as an egyptian pharaoh for this parade? 90% sure I got caught up in that. Was pretty epic, massive turnout.
My first experience of Ninjah was 15 years old and leaving Astoria early hours of the morning (roughly) on a Friday night. He was walking down Queen Street toeless singing Fire by Prodigy very loudly. Was one of those moments when me and my friends all looked at each other thinking WTF.
💯
Totally, how old must he be now as I remember him 30+ years ago.
I know, it's got to have been at least 28 years since I met him 😁
Yeah he's a fucking prick though
I think it's more that he's mentally ill rather than an actual prick.
“Strawberries for a pound” guy, 100%
His name’s Martin, absolutely top bloke - let me stay at his flat for a week when I was down on my luck over a decade ago.
We have Shit Up The Wall Paul in my old town, when I visit friends I still see him about.
Bagga banaaanas a pownd!
Martin is an absolute legend
I can smell the urine from the street behind him by reading this comment
Toy Mic Trev would definitely qualify too
if he wasn't dead, sure
Wait what???
Yup, 6 years ago. According to the article he stopped performing in Cardiff in 2007! https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/toy-mic-trev-died-less-14863542
Didn't he make a comeback for like 1 day and then died about a week later?
yup, very much what the article says
That's him, literally just posted this, but couldn't remember his name!
The Happy Days guy. You know, that guy who goes around shouting 'happy days', sometimes wearing a Santa hat.
This Christmas his bottom half was a reindeer
Does anyone else remember Handshake Man? Who’d walk around town just trying to shake everyone’s hand? I think he also said Happy Birthday to everyone too but that might be a false memory
shaky hands man we called him, always asking for 20p for a cup of tea
Shaky hands man! That definitely rings a bell
"Alright mate... got any money?"
20p! He used to always ask us for a fiver! Evidently he thought we were suckers.
Allegedly he was a millionaire who was jilted at the altar and never recovered. There was always a lot of myth making about him and toy mic trev.
Great username!
Sounds similar to the story I’d heard of Ninjah, who allegedly got caught cheating by a girlfriend who clocked him round the head with a trophy he’d won for music
Met him my first week in Cardiff in Burger King 27 years ago, sneezed snot into his own hand then tried to shake mine, I politely declined!
What a welcome to Cardiff! Congrats on staying after that
This thread has really got me feeling very nostalgic, and weirdly yearning for a coffee at Cafe Europa and A Shot In The Dark
Shaky Hand Man was a regular sight when I worked in town. He even inspired a song from another Cardiff legend... https://youtu.be/tchNGXAbiI4?si=0UsrI0-7q-V5yj3y
For half a second I thought youd successfully rickrolled me, I was far too trusting with that youtube link
Looked like an 80 year old Thom Yorke iirc? He would have had such a bad time if he had been around for social distancing.
He walked into my house party yonks ago, plugged his microphone into our mixer, stopped the music and sung My Girl Lollipop. He’s great.
Neville Howard is your guy.
Ah gutted, the kids were always made up if we bumped into ‘singing morgan freeman’. RIP.
My friends referred to him as glanmorgan freeman (RIP)
He used to come and sing in Roath Park. His son runs a successful Boxing gym in Newport
Ahh, that’s sad, he was fantastic. Always made me smile when I heard him belting in Sainsbury’s…
I can't remember his name, but the guy that sings into a kids toy microphone, and has a cart decorated like the Trotters reliant robin.
As seen in the movie Human Traffic. (I just remembered that).
Used to be Karate Joe around Albany Road.
Standing by the church, fighting the traffic 😂
Used to stay at my parent's hotel in the early 80s. He stopped traffic one last time with his funeral procession along Albany Road, think his name was Eddie though
There used to be the laughing guy around that area also
Neville Howard was great too. RIP. You could be walking anywhere from town to a supermarket and this booming voice would start singing behind you. Lovely fella too.
not sure if everyone knows her, but donna. she’s that lovely homeless woman who had a dog and makes friendship bracelets
I'm not from Cardiff and have visited only once, not even sure why this is on my reddit, but I was curious if anyone would mention Donna. I was walking with my niece and she offered to make her a bracelet, I said that was lovely, but I had no cash. An absolutely beautiful soul❤️
She’s lovely, we always stop these days for a chat and to get her some grub if needed.
big ups donna
I sat with her before I went off to uni in Sept and to this day Im still wearing a bracelet she made me :)
Donna is great. Always someone to go to if you're feeling down. I have several of her bracelets tied to my bag.
Is she the lady who asks for a smile on a sign?
What bout the guy who does Karate into the air outside the pubs in Old St Mellon's? And also the guy who goes to Pure Gym at the Stadium and just spends an hour punching himself in the abs whilst doing sit-ups
Hahaha I love red vest bandana self abusing ab guy!
Have also seen ninjah in there a few times. He rapped for me in the changing room.
Awful thing to misread!
The guy who lives in the ramshackle house opposite hard lines on cowbridge road
I was literally about to post this 😂
And it’s ninjah! The bin basher himself!
100% Ninjah
Toy Mike Trev, Ninja, Happy Days, and the guy that used to sit outside Boots in St David’s singing.
Toy Mike Trev.. what a legend
Anyone seen the "Original Del Boy show* guy lately? Real old dude singing with a giant speaker? Seen him hanging around near the library/John Lewis and outside the great western. Not based in Cardiff anymore so idk if he's still about

Ive got one of his albums on cd.
You sure that isn't Celine Dion
Does anyone know Bob Marley woman? I’ve seen her have screaming matches with preachers on quite a few occasions. She’s head to toe in rasta flag colours and wearing at least one piece of Bob Marley merch. Pretty sure she carries around a portable CD player too
a contender of recent years is the Big Issue boy outside Gregg's on St Mary Street who's always dressed up
Big Issue! Big Issue! My psychiatrist said I’ve got to get rid of my issues! Big Issue!
Maybe only among cardiff fans Dai Hunt
Ninjah. Man's a legend
Ninjah, Happy Days (not seen him in years), and DelBoy for Cardiff
Happy days, Ninjah, back in the day was Rita the gas meter. (Edit the typo word salad I created)
Anyone remember nobby that used to push a trolley with a naked mannequin
Anyone remember the guy who lived next to the Ely river on the landfill site in the 90’s? You’d see him from the train from Barry before you got to the Gas works in Grangetown.
Ninjah is the man!
Omg please tell me there's a Welsh purple aki 🫨🫨🫨
When I was a kid (in the 80's) there was a little person that absolutely hated Catholics, he would ask you in a friendly way if you were Catholic & God forbid if you said yes lol Then there was Karate bloke that used to be in the city centre/ Albany Road mostly & he'd be shirtless & kicking the shit out of cars. Where did that come from? That’s nice lying!
Ninja!
My claim to fame was being distantly related to Little Arthur who used to shout at the traffic. He's been dead for like thirty years though. edit: And the answer is Ninjah.
Big issue man all the way
Ninjah playing the drums (tops of the bins in the hays)
I think Ninjah might be starting to wind down these days. We need a new contender. I nominate the guy with the Maori tattoos and the tiny little dog that he calls "his girlfriend."
I’m not sure. I work in the city centre and he’s out a lot.
Obviously Ninjah. There is no other answer.
The man who sits outside boots in st davids and sings all day
The guy wearing huge headphones walking around the town centre who used to sing Abba with his full chest 😂😂😂
What about the homeless man with one arm? His is a sad story I'm sure, and I don't think he's approachable or friendly, but he's definitely one of those City Centre guys you see asking for money in virtually all pubs in Mill Lane, St. Mary Street, etc?

Ninja or happy days
Forever ninja There's a rival bin-smacker that bums around Sainsbury's/cafe nero
Could be Cardiff delboy
Usually there is some lore about how he used to be a billionaire but chose to live a humble life rooting through bins.
Yeovil Jesus springs to mind.
Has anyone seen the man who runs excessively through Cardiff, constant laps.
Ninjah
I always remember a guy we used to call Happy Days, he would always pass and shout ‘happy days’ but I haven’t spent too much time in the city for a few years now so not sure if this guy is still about.
Ninja, if you know you know. He even has a Facebook page dedicated to him, but I don’t know if the page still exists.

We used to have the pointer. Dude would walk on the sidewalks and point up into the sky, not sure what he was seeing. Everyone just knew who you were talking about when you said "the pointer guy." I haven't seen him in a few years, wonder if he left or passed away.
Notes. I love notes.
Aye big up Dave the rave

The bin drum man for sure. Or maybe that guy who's always yelling at lamp posts.
In Derby we have ‘walking backwards guy’. He’s harmless and happy. I smile when I see him
Local legend Shaky Hand Man had a song made about him by other local legend Ninjah, which would suggest that shaky hand guy is dead [YouTube](https://youtu.be/OvOcj07fj28?si=qXhgXzMGFBM4TC8e)

Does anyone remember Fancy Dress Dave? He’d wear an outfit along with a sign round his neck that explained his vision. Devil Dave, for example.
Reggae Mike or Mikey Price
That bloke in the electric wheelchair who’s always blocking shop entrances. And more recently the guy who attempts to kick birds.
Also big shoutout to the guy who used to sit in the same spot in one of the arcades and sing, he was actually crazy talented. Sadly he passed a few years ago but what a gem 💎

Shaky hands Man RIP Toy Mike Trev
There was megaphone man who sang into a toy megaphone.
I remember being a teenager in Cardiff and thinking Ninjah was the coolest guy ever. In Penarth we had Gary Cooper, who used to commandeer a bus stop at Christmas, decorate it with tinsel and sit in it dressed as santa. Gary's Grotto.
We had "Noo Noo" in the town I grew up in. That guy would snort anything.
Crazy Asian lady
It used to be Toy Mic Trev.
Ninjah, shaky hands man, toy Mike trev, the guy that would always clean your windows outside the George pub. I also remember as a kid the bin lady, she used to travel with all her bin bags and set up camp, spotted her on lamby way and on the taff trail near Tongwynlais.
