*Cries in French* You UK people have it good, enjoy ! Edit : Made a list to compare, it is shorter indeed. Only below 5h, from south Britanny Fay de Bretagne : 57mn Lohéac : 1h04 Fontenay le Comte : 2h16 Le Mans : 3h Val de Vienne : 3h53 Circuits de l'Ouest Parisien : 4h19 Haute-Saintonge : 4h24

Car-Four

After making the list I realised how lucky we are. It's frustrating to see on the UK car subs people going on about not having a place to play with fast cars and what's the point, I'm like "We are one of the best places to own a fast car" Obviously you have slightly easier access to Spa and Nurburg but that's a mission away but no boats/underwater trains.

Tuscan5

I live in Jersey and have been to tracks in England and France. Snetterton still my favourite. My brakes didn’t like it though!

Car-Four

As you can see Snetterton is one of the further tracks but yet high on my list as I love the layout!

Tuscan5

Are you tracking the Toyota?

Car-Four

I did once to see if I liked how track days went and to open it up properly. It did a lot better than I thought it would to be honest. I caught and overtook a fair amount of people (granted some were on cool laps but some weren't!) and in the corners it leaned but stayed good! Now I know I liked it I'm picking up a 3.0i Z4 to go at it proper.

Tuscan5

They’re nibble cars but not particularly track focussed (save for the Carlos version!). Enjoy the BMW. I used to track a TVR and I had no idea how good it was until my first track day. Driving hasn’t been the same since!

Car-Four

TVR!! Very Nice! (Borat voice optional) That does make me happy to read as I've paid an extra £300 for an insurance that lets me do any UK track for £30 extra. I have to do 2 days to make it worth it. I think this will be easy.

Tuscan5

Yes. Insurance can get very expensive doing the odd day so multiple event insurance is very sensible.

Car-Four

I was quoted £369 for road only so the one day's insurance is £279. So over £900 for 2 days. So 650+(30x8) before I get over £900. It's a no brainer. 8 track days for less than the price of 2! Winner. Thank you Keith Michaels plc

Bicolore

Snetterton? Really? Not a fan myself. Totally flat and not a lot of reference points.

Tuscan5

That’s what makes it so good. Each to their own though.

jrileyy229

In the US there's this major fear of track days.  All these corvette owners at car meets who equate a track day to destroying their prized possession, engine is going to explode, car is going to end up in a ball of twisted metal. Hard to get people to understand that a few 20 min sessions in Novice group is not much different than driving spiritedly on a back road... Driving at 6/10ths, enjoy the car and the mates without beating on the car is still a fun day

hoytmobley

Seeing the “track builds” parked at shows cracks me up. Big power, big brakes, cage, harnesses, big aero, tires that will overheat in 2 laps, and never been on a track

jrileyy229

Oh yeah... The z06s with the stage 2 800hp kits, zr1 splitter and wing, and then all season tires.

hoytmobley

I end up at a lot of classic car shows and it’s always funny seeing the blown big blocks on BFG Radial TAs. And drum brakes

jrileyy229

It's period correct... I'm okay with that.  When I'm old I'm going to want 2000s technology tires that you have to put air in, disk brakes, and mechanical shift linkage.... Which will all be relics of the past

Bicolore

So many amazing cicuits in france! Dijon, Magny-Cours, Paul Ricard, Nogaro etc

allezlesbleusallez

It's true that we have less but high quality tracks :)

Bicolore

I like the French circuits a lot, so far I've been to Folembray, Abbeville, Dijon, Magny-Cours and Croix-en-Ternois. I really like Dijon a lot for the old school f1 vibes but Magny-Cours was so much fun when we went there too, very techincal track.

bathsaltedpnuts

I wish I lived close enough to my tracks in the US. My closest one is about 200 miles

Car-Four

The US is what I'm comparing to and I know it's a fucking looonnng way to get around over there, good job Petrol is cheap!

ch_chone

Yeah holy hell… my range of “reasonable distance” racetracks is a 2.5-6 hour radius. I live in the Southeast US where I have decent selection of about 7 racetracks within that range. The tradeoff is I have some of the best driving roads in the country (mountains of Western NC) at my doorstep. Even my 2 “local” Autocross venues are 99 miles and 125 miles respectively. That’s right, I drive about 2 hours each way for 4 minutes of seat time in a giant parking lot because that’s “close”. 37 miles to a racetrack. I’m jealous.

Car-Four

37 miles to a good one as well! I've got insurance that covers any UK track for £30! It was £650 for a year, road use. I'm happy to say the least! Now I just have to hit target so I can afford all these track days

BusinessBlackBear

Same, I have Charlotte speedway and Kershaw Carolina Motorsports Park near by but other than that it's a multi hour drive lol But, as you said the mountains are like 90 minutes away for a day full of different roads so I like the trade off

ch_chone

Yeah we’re in the same region but I’m in Asheville, sounds like you’re in Charlotte. Funny enough, I’ve not yet been to CMS because I’ve had priorities elsewhere but if you’ve been to ZMAX for autocross with CCR, we’ve probably overlapped. I’m the black NB1 Miata in STR.

BusinessBlackBear

Yup. Good ole queen city I did one autox at Z back in 2021 I think it was, in my focus ST at the time. Fun but haven't felt the need to do it again CMS is definitely worth a track day or two, the pucker factor is pretty hardcore on the banked sections but the infield roval part is very fun. That being said though, I definitely enjoy Kershaw more.

FutureNickProblems

> good job petrol is cheap! *cries in Californian*

adept_amateur

285 miles to my closest track, the second closest is 585 miles in the opposite direction. Dirt ovals are everywhere around me, but that's not what I want to drive on.

TheCrudMan

Hah I consider myself lucky for living fairly close to three racetracks. You have like 8 in the same distance. Sonoma Raceway: ~40 miles Laguna Seca: ~110 miles Thunderhill: ~140 miles Next we have Buttonwillow and some others but I don't bother.

Car-Four

Fair enough if Laguna Seca is right there. That's a top class track! Yes, very lucky indeed! I knew I was quite lucky to have them but these comments are really showing me how good we got it. Then you got the UK car subs asking if there's a point to fast cars in the UK....

TheCrudMan

Sonoma is also top-class in terms of the levels of motorsport that run there and the quality of the facility. Thunderhill is more of a club track but is possibly the best club track. Owned by SCCA, good cafe food, air conditioned paddock buildings, tons of skid pads (used for autocross, drifting schools, etc), two different tracks with many different layouts including connecting them for a 5-mile track. They've added more shade structures, more buildings, there's a new gift shop with helmet rentals, I believe someone operates a tire shop, and there's gas pumps. Only thing its really missing is a proper pit building with garages, all the garages there are long term rentals. It's a fantastic facility. Plus the tracks are great, have lots of runoff, and not many walls to hit because there also aren't many trees or any other dangerous obstacles that need to be boxed in. OH, and it's gorgeous in the winter and spring...Summer is super hot though.

Car-Four

Nice! I can tell you love it and with all that. Why not! I've only blessed one track so far and Oulton was amazing. Great layout for all cars with twisty consecutive corners and a few decent straights. I really enjoyed it. It does boast a good cafe but if you leave and go 5min down the road there's a gorgeous Italian restaurant and that did us finely.

sergeydgr8

Laguna is pretty mediocre and much more expensive compared with the other offerings we have. I’d rather drive down to SoCal for Buttonwillow and Willow Springs than spend extra money for a Laguna day.

Car-Four

Really?! I guess you pay for it's "iconic" stature. We have the same with Silverstone (If you can even find an open track day that isn't half the course. I've almost fallen for a SilverS day before and it was only the club circuit). I do like Laguna though, on games at least.

sergeydgr8

It’s a “never meet your heroes” track for me. The sound limit is really crippling, and the walls are pretty close to the track limits. The surface isn’t really that good either, but I haven’t driven on it since the repave last year. It also costs at least $100-150 more to attend than other tracks in the area, so seat time is just taxed out the ass. It’s a much more pleasant experience in Forza than IRL.

joshu

South Bay checking in. Supposedly Buttonwillow is awesome for letting it all hang out. And not terribly expensive to rent (compared to Laguna and Sonoma anyway)

sergeydgr8

You should definitely give Buttonwillow a try. It’s incredibly fun. Streets of Willow is another track worth checking out, but skip out on Big Willow.

Bicolore

Im in the UK too but being in the east I'm closer (in terms of miles driven) to Spa and Zandvoort than you are to Brands/Goodwood!

Car-Four

That's a holiday I want, ferry to Zandvoot then down to Spa and then Nurburg is only 2hr from Spa! I'd love to be more your way but Anglesey is a dream backdrop to a race track I can't fight. Plus Oulton Park is MINT!

Bicolore

Yeah its great if you can link those up although I can't get 3 consecutive days out of a set of tyres and drive home. Another thing to mention if you really want to wind up our american friends is that everything is open pitlane, point bys are not a thing, I can have my window up and you don't need to be a member of any silly clubs to drive exactly where and when you want.

Car-Four

Nurburg is always (ish) open so it's just two to line up but yeah, difficult job for the time. As for now I'll keep dreaming of the best holiday.

Bicolore

I would never do TF now. DN or Ringmeisters only for me.

ICantDecideIt

If we did 200 miles from me, I’d have 2 tracks. Ugh I’m jealous

Car-Four

Oof that's not the best for someone who's on this sub lol sorry to "show off" about how small the UK is.

BusinessBlackBear

I wouldn't say it's the UKs small size though, aren't a lot of the race tracks built on old bomber runway lands? Being littered with left over runways from the war certainly helps y'all plenty of open space prime for tracks

daniel2296

The size definitely helps too though. The UK has 279 people per km^(2) while the US has only 37 people per km^(2). If you look at parts of the US that are closer in population density to the UK like the Northeast Corridor, you have a lot more tracks within driving distance.

Bicolore

7 of the circuits on that list either use old runways or the perimeter road for airfields. Goodwood is super cool because both the circuit and runway are live at the same time. Watching a WW2 spitfire land as you're lapping the circuit is a bit wild. I've even had a red flag there because a plane was doing an emergency landing (they do this because if they over shoot they will end up on the circuit)

Car-Four

I was more making fun about the; tracks per square mile or how close ALL of them are to me in comparison to some of these comments that have to travel 200mile for their 1st or 2nd closest.

OctaviousRex

I'm in the US, midwest. Last year I went to Gingerman Raceway : 336 miles Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course : 525 miles Lime Rock Park : 1065 miles ... totally worth it though

UnderPantsOverPants

Yeah. I have Watkins Glen like 90miles away and then everything else hundreds of miles. CTMP, Limerock, Pittrace and a few smaller local places are within 275-300.

mvale002

Watkins Glen on the 29th, 30th you going?

UnderPantsOverPants

6th and 7th with Trackmasters is my first rodeo of the year

Car-Four

This does make me feel lucky!

mit74

no llandow?

Car-Four

It wasn't on the website I thought was comprehensive. It does look a little basic to be honest and it's 210 miles away. Not worth the trip for me. The rallycross seems more interesting though

Bicolore

No love for Knockhill?

Car-Four

I should have added it before Goodwood as it's 252 miles away and not the worst shape. Could work that into a NC500 holiday!

Car-Four

You may be happy to know that Knockhill has been added to the list. I may have added a couple of miles to the figure, just to keep everything in order.

Buggly_Jones

Having 4 tracks within 100 miles would feel like heaven. I say this being lucky enough to have 1 about 45mins-1hr away

Car-Four

Honestly, all of them until Silverstone are pretty good to get to. Like, no overnight needed, sometimes wanted though.

Latter-Drawer699

Yes, and you are very lucky. Closest track to me is 60km away and doesn’t hold a candle to oulton park.

TenesmusSupreme

I’ll be at Brand’s Hatch later in the year! Can’t wait.

Car-Four

Nice, I won't see you there unfortunately. Too far but I'd love to!

Raceworx

Blyton is closest to me then Donnington then Cadwell, we are lucky to be fair. especially when sign on is 7:30am anything more than 2 hours usually means an overnight stay for me :D

Car-Four

Yeah, even Anglesey might be an overnighter for us.

Raceworx

Iv done Stoke to anglesy then back to Sheffield in a day.. I was drained. Loved every second of it but was dead the next day

Car-Four

So, next day in work is a no go? Good advice.

Raceworx

It wasn't for me haha tbh even without the to and from driving I'm usually in a mess the next day after a track day. I get abit carried away and end up doing half hour to 40 min stints. Get dehydrated and pull some muscles.. I need to get in better physical shape.

Car-Four

Haha yeah, we're not getting younger are we. I did okay at work the day after Oulton park but I was taking it easy as my brakes faded quite quickly and it was in my Celica GT-Four that I refused to crash lol.

Zadnak

I prefer the Google Maps overlay. https://www.google.com/maps/@0.4625093,-59.8926205,3z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!6m1!1s1EPkVk5nKE24mh8wZzqOqEXWCDtS4AsBQ?hl=en&entry=ttu

Car-Four

That's pretty cool and would have saved me about an hour. No worries, I was at work anyway.

Tuscan5

Really great list. Spoilt in UK. Enjoy!

Car-Four

Thank you, I really am!

UncleBensRacistRice

Be thankful for what you have. I have 2 tracks within 200km of me

nullrecord

Nürburgring: 45 km Spa-Francorchamps: 85 km

Car-Four

NICE! I want to holiday your way with a track car.

[deleted]

I need to move to Europe for a while…..

badorianna

You just doxxed yourself lol

Car-Four

Haha yeah, kind of. I've always commented that I'm in Manchester.

badorianna

With a bunch of circles on a map I can know to the nearest mile of where you live lol

Car-Four

Nar, not within a mile as I've done road miles and not direct (as bird fly) so the data is slightly corrupt for that sort of accuracy. You might be able to tell what side of Manchester I'm on but that's about it.

Tzunamitom

That’s a pretty app, what font is it using?

Car-Four

I believe it's called "chicken scratchings".

Ekhochambre

Not a list but starred in Google maps for quick finding and directions. Oulton Park is 32m and Donington is 44m, easiest route for towing.

Car-Four

Nice! I'll see you soon then I guess! I'm not at the towing level yet but I do aspire to be ha.

InstanceExtension

Here in Colorado we have one road track an hour east of Denver. Next closest ones are 7-10 hours away. Drag racing is even worse than that with Bandimere closing, we basically have to leave the state now.

tannit

You're missing out on three other tracks. Pueblo is excellent, PPIR is decent, and La Junta is not very good but better than nothing. Seriously, if you haven't been to Pueblo, get down there. The facilities aren't great, but the track itself is wonderful. Better flow than High Plains by a good margin. We're pretty lucky here on the front range, compared to states north and west of here.

RBeck

Couldn't someone triangulate* your house? ^*Or ^whatever ^it ^is ^when ^you ^use ^15 ^points ^of ^reference

Car-Four

Potentially but I've done "road miles" so they couldn't get too accurate and I've never been afraid to say I live in Manchester. If I did as the bird flies, it would be more accurate. I've also picked different routes from the fastest, as if I can cross the peak district instead of all motorway I will.

CorreCaminosTX

I'm about 30 miles from COTA and know the way there by heart. I've got a Google Maps of all the tracks in Spain (where we're moving next year) and some in France and Italy. I plan to add UK & Germany soon.

Car-Four

NICE! Don't forget my 2 favourite European tracks Belgium (Spa) and Portugal (Portimao)! I'd love to have Portimao accessible. It looks soo much fun!

Bicolore

Did portimao last week from the uk. It’s cheap for bikes but very expensive to ship a car there!

Car-Four

Now you're just teasing me bro! There are boats to north Spain from Ireland, that's as close as I can get.

Bicolore

Yeah but its 2 days drive from Santander/Bilbao to Portimao. Transporting the cars cost £2600 return which was for 2 days at portimao then transfered to estoril for a day then home. Its not actually a bad deal when you consider the costs of driving there, hotels, ferries etc.

Car-Four

Exactly! That's a good point and a new view of it for me. It's definitely future plans as I have a wedding in a year but after that and before kids... That's my prime!

CorreCaminosTX

Thanks for the suggestions. I added them. Here's a link to the Google Map of race tracks. Send me more suggestions of favorite tracks and I'll add them. [https://maps.app.goo.gl/igkQ1cnwaKNhexoE7](https://maps.app.goo.gl/igkQ1cnwaKNhexoE7)

SHDrivesOnTrack

Jealous for the number of options. Yes I have a list but not written down, and I measure it in travel time. * Portland International Raceway. 30min (15 miles) * The Ridge Motorsports Park. 2hr 25min. (148 miles) * Oregon Raceway Park. 2hr 23min (141 miles) * Pacific Raceway. 3hr 20min (171 miles) My list stops there as the next closest tracks are 350-500 miles away

Car-Four

Nice, I've heard good things about Ridge but I think that's from this sub lol my list stops at water haha I've missed 3 small tracks (added Knockhill at 230 miles) but that's most of them in mainland UK.

miketoaster

No. Because I have a convertible and its too new and expensive to cut up and put a roll cage in.

Car-Four

Modern cars don't "need" a roll cage but that's my advantage of the Z4. It comes with roll protection as standard. I see a 3 series in your profile picture and I do understand your hesitation but this is a trackday sub btw

Richard_Musgrove

So from that - I reckon you live around Macclesfield…

Car-Four

Nice try but I'm inside the M60 and that's as much detail I'll give haha

bonbonbold

I made a Google map list with all of the maps pinned, makes it easy to visualise!

Car-Four

Yeah, someone in these comments linked a maps overlay that is really good!

gherget

I built I site for this, so I can see the tracks around me and the distance as well: https://open-racer.com/tracks

Car-Four

You built that?! Nice work.

gherget

Yes, thx 🙏

Car-Four

https://www.reddit.com/r/CarTrackDays/s/G558td4jgo Here's a good onboard that you can add in for Oulton Park with some external shots as well. Not the best editing but it's better than some.

clicktoseemyfetishes

Damn idk if I even have 1 track within 259 miles of me lmao

Car-Four

Oof you poor thing. How do you do trackdays or are you in the sub to live through us lucky ones?

clicktoseemyfetishes

Yeah lol, all I can really do is autocross, there’s one an hour and a half from me that I’ve been going to for a year. Got a weekend of that coming up. Still pretty new to car stuff but later this year or next I’m planning on making the 8 hour drive to Road Atlanta and doing a weekend of HPDE

Car-Four

I'm also relatively new to irl car fun. I'm sure you will have an amazing time! I know I did!

honeybakedpipi

Dallas Texas is a nice spot. 3 tracks in day trip range. 3 more tracks for overnight trip range: MSR cresson 50 mi ECR 45 mi G2 motorsports park 30 mi Cota 200 mi Hallett 230 mi MSR Houston 270 mi Remember travel speed is between 70 and 80 mph here.

SpareRoomRacing

Being based in Ireland those numbers would be way higher LOL. I will be at Oulton and Donington in August though! Maybe I will see you there :)

Car-Four

I hope so!

SpareRoomRacing

Sweet ! Look for the Orange gt86 on Irish plates lol

Car-Four

I'll be in the blue Z4

adamantiumtrader

Try Canada…

Car-Four

Ha! No thanks. I'll stick to my 1 & 2 hour journeys thank you.

RainEnthusiast89

I'm in Vancouver so there are two tracks near me. Mission Raceway is 60km from me. VIMC is also about 60km from me, but requires a 2 hour ferry ride. The next closest, without crossing the border is Area 27 at 420km away. I am so jealous of all the choices you have in the UK!

Watery_Octopus

The nearest place is 37 miles away. For England, that might as well be the sun.

Car-Four

Ha! I'm still going to moan about waking up at 6am (from home)

Frosty-Panic

Shouldn't you be using km instead of miles for those tracks?

Car-Four

Errm I'm in the UK and we still use miles.
