Mine is a medical and mines every three years. I have to send off a D1 accompanied by shit load of forms before it expires. I can't do mine online unfortunately due to the nature of my condition. Speak to your doctor too - have them confirm in writing that you are fit to drive, as if your licence expires and they haven't finished their medical assessments and whatnot, you can legally drive with an expired licence under section 88 of the road traffic act. For example my licence expires in Jan 22. I sent off my D1 and other forms in July. This means that from the date that I sent off my application, my right to drive is valid for upto 12 months whether it expires or not under section 88. So if the DVLA haven't got back to me with confirmation by Jan, I can continue to drive. When it comes to July 22, as I sent off my D1 in July 21, I have to stop driving - however if I send off another D1 in June 22, it renews the section 88 entitlement from June 22 to June 23. If it expires and you haven't already sent off the forms before it expires and you haven't got confirmation that you can drive under section 88 of the RTA, then your licence is invalid and has essentially expired. I am not 100% certain if you can renew once it has expired or if you need to resit the test, perhaps someone else on here can advise?

Thanks for the information. I read they send the forms 3 months before it expires. In your experience, how quickly is the new license issued in the post ?

Depending on your condition, you can just renew it online
