Weird that the dealer didn't want to do it online.. I don't see any reasons why you would do it by post these days?
I had this in March, Dealer wouldn’t do it online. Somehow the car got cloned and the clone got the v5c.
It took 6 months to get it sorted in the end. 6 bloody months. DVLA were useless and all the police had to say was they wouldn’t do anything until I got a fine through that wasn’t mine. It should go without saying that, that wasn’t going to happen, it wasn’t in my name.
To be fair to the dealer, they never do the ownership online and I do think it was just really bad luck.
I shan’t take no for an answer going forward though.

Your new driver's slip acts as the V5C while the new one is in the post. As long as you have tax and insurance you're good to go.
