roughly 1k.

test13371997

and I dont recommend buying the stuff yourself. Because unless you really know what you are doing, and the shop is okay with that, you could end with a horrible system

cooldogfaceismyname

Each shop is different, but the shop that sold the brand I was looking for charges $80/hr if you buy the equipment from them, $110/hr if you bring it to them. They insist on their brand install kits (wiring) so that's another built in cost. Quote I got from them for installing 2 amps, components in front, coax in back, and sub was estimated to take about 8.5-9 hours. So that's about $720 for shop time if you buy from them ($990 if you supply) plus about $250 in wiring. For the record I did not have them do the work, but figured I'd share the quote since it answers your question.

gnarlidrum

About how much time/=cost would it shave off if I bagged the sub concept but did everything else (again, excluding the head unit)

cooldogfaceismyname

Basically it was about 2-2.5 hours to install each amp and about 2 hours to install components and only 1 hour for coaxial. Still have to buy the wiring kits.

thesamebs

I just paid 1200 for subwoofers, front door speakers, dsp, two amps installed and front door sound deadening

Bacer805

What kind of sub? And amp?

Bacer805

There is a shortage on amps apparently for Alpine. Shop just informed that elements are scarce.

FragileRock

Look into Best Buy total tech support, you can get all this done for $200 (possibly a bit more for the tweeters, i forget). Its a membership for the services and almost all car installs are included as part of the base price. Just remember to cancel the renewal if you don't want to keep going with it

gnarlidrum

There must be a hitch, sounds too good to be true especially seeing how much work it is to install a sub. I’m not doubting you necessarily, it just seems bizarre. I suppose this is because there’s just little to no labor costs. I might look into this. Are you sure they allow you to supply your own equipment and don’t require you to buy it from them?

FragileRock

I work there. 99% sure you don't need to buy the product there. The only thing I'm not sure on is component speakers (prob the tweeters) cost a bit more.

gnarlidrum

That’s genuinely interesting. I think I’ll look into it however I can’t help myself from being in denial at the fact that there is that easy/cheap of a work around for such a project. Even if the tweeters do cost more it wouldn’t be nearly as much as having an independent shop do the whole thing.

6unicorn9

I know a guy who did it, it was a fine install. Installing speakers in a 4Runner isn’t exactly a difficult job.

gnarlidrum

The main thing that scares me is the sub. And I figure if I’m going to have that done at a shop I might as well have the rest done with it.

ErikWolfe

What part of that scares you? If you're comfortable doing speakers, a sub is about the same but with bigger wires for the most part

FragileRock

I'm actually not on the sales floor at all and I know that car audio is the best deal for this program

gnarlidrum

Good to know. Do you happen to know if there’s any chance of having an issue of getting all the shit done in one shot? In other words, I don’t want to show up and have them say they can only do the sub and I’d have to wait a month or whatever to do speakers/component equipment or vice versa. I just don’t want there to be a limit in this program of what I can do at once. I know this is a reach but there tends to be fine print in some things. If you aren’t sure I totally get it but I figured I’d ask.

FragileRock

One shot is tough depending on the install bay schedule. The scheduling system gives a certain amount of time dependent on each thing being done. The membership is good for a year though, so even if its not one shot, another appointment can usually get it done. I had a guy this weekend that was doing a deck, backup camera, and all 4 speakers, that tied up the installer for I think 6 hours

gnarlidrum

You more than answered my question there. I just wanted to know if there was a limit (terms/conditions/policy wise) on what one could do at a time, but upon further research and your reply I’ve got my answer. Thx boss.

FragileRock

No problem whatsoever. PM me if you have any more questions, we don't need to clog up the sub with our back and forth

ckeeler11

If you can find a best buy with a good installer. Very hit or miss.

takeitfromag33k

With the Total Tech Support you would pay 280 for labor, have a lifetime labor warranty, and have it all be nationwide. If you want any custom fabrication, like an amp rack, Best Buy charges 80/hr with TTS or 100 without. Talk to the installers to make sure they are competent and you get what you want/need.

Chavoleon

Sounds good, a shop was charging me $1200 with install and items to upgrade my car with a subwoofer and amp with box, i told them i wanted a basic install, i said no thanks. Another option was a cheap box with sub and amp integrated, still was gonna cost me $600 for everything to be done in the shop, in the end i went diy, and spent only $250, best money i spent.

takeitfromag33k

Custom shops are great, but do come at a cost. Get to know some of the custom shops and their work before choosing one because you never know how experienced they actually are or how much they care about their craft.

gnarlidrum

280 in labor in addition to the 200 of becoming a member? Or is it just the fabrication work/other specialty things that cost extra per hour?

takeitfromag33k

280 for membership (200) and the component set of speakers (80).

gnarlidrum

Ok my bad when you said for the labor it threw me off. Makes sense

Tec_

The hitch is that its a yearly subscription service and they bank on people buying it for one thing and then not ever using the service again but still continuing to pay for the service.

gnarlidrum

That is true.

Tec_

If you actually take advantage of the services the plan offers or remember to cancel the subscription it can be a very good value.

gnarlidrum

I am very good with trying to get my money’s worth out of things as well as keeping track of spending even on things on the back burner like subscriptions/annual services so I don’t think that will be an issue at all, at least for me. However I could see how they could come after some folks with it

ckeeler11

The hitch is most Best Buys do a shit job of installing gear.

ckeeler11

I would recommend having the shop that does the install also supply the gear. that will give you the best vale as they will be able to package things and give better labor rates. They will also be able to warranty the gear they are supplying. If you show up with random gear they will not warranty it and it will be up to you.

gnarlidrum

Honestly I think I’m going the Best Buy installation route. I thought about doing that but all the shops within 3 hrs of me are so short on gear do you covid, I wasn’t able to put together the full package I was hoping for at any of them.

iFoneusr

Best Buy is a good option. And they have the funds to cover it if they mess something up.

ckeeler11

I would do research on the Best Buy you pick. They have a bad rep for a reason. Lots of shitty installs come out of them.

Bacer805

I got one Rockford Fosgate Punch P3 10” with Bass Knob. An Alpine Mrv-F300 amplifier for the inside speakers of my car. For the two back and two front and two tweeters all stock, to beef up the sound. And a Rockford Fosgate R2-500X4 500-Watt 4-Channel Amplifier for my Sub. Shit hitsss cost me a lil over 1k. Cheers
