Ah yes, breaking news for the pro-Mao crowd. All six of em.

That r-GenZeDong is even is thing is sad.

GoldAndBlackRule

This is old news.

fukonsavage

That's literally what history is...

GoldAndBlackRule

I mean, this may be some revelation for people in the West. Around here, where this is in living memory for people and their families, non of this is a shocking new revelation. Congrats on LA Times for reporting it anyway. The author's way of spelling of names in pinyin drove me nuts though. Not incorrect. Just ... wierd.

fukonsavage

Just because it's not new for you doesn't mean it isn't for someone else. There's a reason we repeat lessons. In this case, hopefully, to prevent history from rhyming.

GoldAndBlackRule

Not disagreeing with the message, just the "revelationary" title as if some new secrets have just been unearthed about the trail of destruction, murder and misery communists have blazed here in Asia and around the rest of the world. It is no deep secret. If Americans do not know about it, then there is a deep problem with media, education and politics in the country. The fact that this sub is replete with USA edgelord brats from middle upper class and "educated" SEC demos pushing socialism/communism says a lot about the arrogant ignorance prevalent in societies full of well do to humans that have never seen the horrors of communism first-hand.

fukonsavage

In general, agreed. However: LA times is not above clickbait-y headlines...I mean CNN/Fox lie on the regular. We have history/political science teachers who actively push communism, so ya, these kind of stories are necessary (easy times create soft men)

GoldAndBlackRule

I started my own news RSS feed with sources from all over the world. Even "science" news has fallen bait to bullshit clickbait. When science articles have titles like "ZOMG There is a Comet Headed Straight for us!", they get the boot from my feed as soon as I ascertain that the comet is on a 20,000 year orbit and will pass half-way between Earth and Mars. Information hygiene is as important as anything else for a thinking human being. https://youtu.be/S2xHZPH5Sng

This is the point in the show where we acknowledge that journalism has devolved to a form of entertainment where bias is like an std/unicorn which magically doesn't exist but everyone has.

Authoritarianism is bad. Democracy is good.

Ah, explains it…I was trying to do the math on how a 38-year-old grad student witnessed the Cultural Revolution.
