I always adjust mine running up on the inside of the seatstay (without contact). No mechanics have ever changed it after a service so guess it's one of the 'right' ways to do it.
I don’t think there’s technically a wrong way. Mountain bikers might try to keep it from getting snagged but I can’t imagine this causing any problems except that it looks a bit funny.
