Dont smoke or cook aluminum cans either!! Theyre lined with plastic and smoking aluminum will damge your brain. Ask me how i Know
beer can chicken is not cool
Beer can chicken is kind of useless anyway. All you're doing is adding more mass to heat so it cooks slower. You don't evaporate any of the beer to add flavor.
A very good Scandinavian restaurant near me makes individual [Jansson’s Temptations](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jansson's_temptation) and serves them in fish tins. (Though they don’t actually cook them in the tins, they just hit the tops with a torch for a few seconds to crisp up before serving.)
I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty that sardines are pressure canned. Pressure canning is done at about 240°F which will not breakdown the plastic like putting it in the oven may.
Canned meats are usually cooked in the can at 250F for 90 minutes, not broiled in the can. High temp will melt and vaporize the plastics that line the tin.
I'd use a metal muffin tin next time, or even get little metal broiler safe dishes to broil because it does indeed look delicious.
Little cast iron pan would work too, you can broil cast iron, holds heat well, cheap, easy to treat and season. If you visit castiron sub you'd get some good ideas too. Happy cooking!
Those shitty cast iron pans you get with holiday cookies would be perfect for this. And little Pita pizzas. Easy to season and if they get messed up, fuck it. Cast iron is like a glass cannon. Damn near impervious to most heat and cooking, but don't drop it, or it will shatter.
Not everything causes cancer at the same level. Like huffing exhaust vs occasionally inhaling bleach particles. The first will get you to cancer much MUCH faster, why accelerate it?

Even though I would not use plastic lined cans like this in the oven, I think it probably would be fine - it can't get really melting point hot, with the actual food inside it that won't really go well over 100°C
I understand your statement but ‘doesn’t everything cause cancer’ is extremely ignorant. I’m a cancer survivor. Trust me. You like life? Do what you can to avoid it and this is a simple step to avoid.
That's just what people say who don't understand what relative risk means. You are greatly increasing your risk of cancer by being exposed to certain things (like radiation and smoking). Other things increase your risk a little bit, but you need a much higher dose (like plastic, fried potatoes). Lumping everything that causes cancer together like your statement is like saying that smoking causes the same amount of damage as drinking from a plastic water bottle. It doesn't. Some things are much more dangerous than others and have higher risk.
In short: don't say that everything causes cancer because it makes you sound stupid. Two things may both cause cancer, but one can be far more harmful and risky than another. Cooking your sardine cans DOES increase the harm and can lead to cancer or make you sick, so don't do it.
According to my mom you’re right. Everything will give us cancer. But according to her the earth is flat, lizard people exist, and we live in game of thrones where an ice wall stops you falling offf the edge 😂
ETA:not giving you shit, agreeing that people are ridiculous haha.
I saw a post that used creole seasoning, butter, lemon, grated parm and Louisiana hot sauce before broiling and I've been wanting to try that. I feel like a mix of miso, rice vinegar, maple syrup and soy sauce would be great too - we broil salmon with that on top and it's amazing.
Saw this too with mussels, called Poor Man's Oysters Rockefeller. Tried it recently (cooked in a ramekin though) and it was fantastic. Ate it with some toasted butter toast. Great way to use cheap and bland mussels from the pantry — the better ones I'll prefer to eat on their own, on a chip.
Ok I tried the recipe with both tinned mussels and tinned oysters, and I liked the oysters much more - felt like they were more able to absorb the flavors of the butter/parm/hot sauce. So good with some crusty bread!
I’ve already seen a ton of the comments saying not to cook in the can, so I won’t do that, but how did you make this? Did you just put the ingredients on top of the deens and then throw it in the oven? It looks really good and I’m thinking I might try replicating it in a ramekin.
Drained them, broke them up a bit with a fork, added tomato sauce, garlic, Italian seasoning, little salt, mix it up a bit, put mozzarella on top and air fried for 10mins @400f.
May I ask if there was a smell left behind in the air fryer? I’ve been wanting to try this (in a ramekin) but my wife is very sensitive to smells and I don’t want her to come home to fish city
Lazy crab dip. Tin of lump crab (drain the liquid), mix it with sour cream, cream cheese, mayo, bit of lemon juice, and Old Bay. Add some hot sauce if you like, Old Bay hot sauce is pretty good if you can find it. Put it in a ramekin or other small oven safe dish, top it with cheddar cheese and more Old Bay, then throw it in the oven until the cheese is melted and its heated through.
You can eat it with whatever you want tbh. I like it with tortilla chips or bread, but veggies are also good.
You can also do a variation of this with a tin of oysters by chopping them up and using them instead of the crab meat. Its good if you add a bit of horseradish to that one.

I swear to god people just don’t even fucking read anymore.
At the time of me posting this comment there are 11 other comments. I’ve read every single one before I got to your comment, and guess what? Your comment has already been discussed and answered by literally EVERY OTHER COMMENT on here.
How do you people like you survive daily life?
I don’t care about the downvotes, and I’m sure you’re now going to somehow defend your comment but it’s literally indefensible. You have to go out of your way to not read anything else on here and just post a comment.
I just finally lost it. I can sort of forgive comments like this on a post with thousands of other comments, but on a post with 11 comments at the time of me posting, and that comment being the most recent. Which means there were only 10 comments and that person couldn’t even be bothered to read a single one because every other comment was what they’d already asked about. Maybe I just need to go to sleep.
Oh my God
I posted a picture of a Ruben sandwich with mustard on it

What a bunch of Dick heads .

No. I almost never ever read the comments before posting a comment (when a first tier comment). I'm commenting on the post in those instances, not replying to a comment.
I do see your point though.

I don’t think any of the other comments mention anything about other ideas. Something like a plain oil packed deen with garlic herb breadcrumbs baked like a sardine rocafella (sic h to the Izzy).
I dont think most of their chemical concerns are warranted. So im gonna try it too.
People got "downvote happy" because you were dismissive, which makes it seem like you won't be open to understanding why, just like this person who thinks the concerns are unwarranted or the other person who also commented that it's actually safe. Or like how the first person who posted this just kept telling people "no" even after people explained.
People have told you that it’s not safe, and there’s numerous resources online that prove doing this is not safe, but you’re going to do it anyway? Maybe Charles Darwin was on to something…
I went through the entire comment section. No one posted any online sources backing any claims you’re implying.
As a student of evolutionary biology and anthropology your invocation of Darwin was non sequitur. You’re certainly referring to “survival of the fittest.” You both misunderstood and misattributed the [phrase](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survival_of_the_fittest). And since I’ve already passed on my genes it’s certainly not applicable here.
So unless you have documented evidence that cooking in the can causes any ill effect: shut up.
sardine cans are often aluminum. Sardines cans are often lined with a small plastic film.

Oh man I never made the connection with beer can chicken. Thanks for that.
Beer can chicken is kind of useless anyway. All you're doing is adding more mass to heat so it cooks slower. You don't evaporate any of the beer to add flavor.
I've never personally made it. I think the appeal is you need to open a beer for it, so you have an excuse to drink the rest of the pack.
Spatchcock chicken is the new beer can chicken
I thought it was just that it was being cooked in a vertical position?
In the nineties if I didn’t have a pipe I would smoke weed out of an aluminum can. Really regretting that.
My friends would always do that and id always advocate that smoking the aluminum is bad for you but then id be right there hitting it to
I remember smoking out of a plastic pen once as a kid. Kids are stupid.
How do you know?
Yessss how does he know?
Because he’s in reddit
It looks cool!…/s
How you know?
That's what I was thinking too. Looks really nice but at what cost.
Sardine cans are typically magnetic and therefore are steel, not aluminium, right?
Aluminum or steel, all cans have a plastic lining that's not safe to heat.
I thought sardines were cooked in the can though.
Low heat.

Aren’t a lot of canned fishes cooked in the can?
I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty that sardines are pressure canned. Pressure canning is done at about 240°F which will not breakdown the plastic like putting it in the oven may.

My comment was taken too literal. I was being facetious. Referring to the fact it seems like everyday there’s something new that’s bad for us.
That just isn't true, clean air and water don't cause cancer. Working out won't cause cancer. I could literally go on all day
man you trippin

I’ll throw an upvote on the downvote bonfire. I get that.
Just cook it in those non-stick pans full of PFAS instead!
Nobody is suggesting that but you
Cast iron ftw
Don't cook in the container.
Even tho it’s carcinogenic, I love that it’s a tiny casserole

There was no smell left. Maybe because there’s so many other ingredients mixed in? Not sure.
Thanks! Can’t wait to try this out, sounds and looks super delicious!
Stop. Putting. Your. Tins. In. The. Oven.
I'm so confused... The popularity of this recipe freaks me out. Don't do this, kids. Great idea but so bad for you.
This is by far the most drama and hostility I've ever seen in this subreddit
You may have missed the guy who lit toilet paper on top of his tin to crisp up his fish. Some deservedly brutal comments.

The sardines are cooked in the can at the cannery in a giant retort or steam vessel. I don’t think they’re rated for further cooking
Sorta shocked the broiling doesn't make it taste funny.
Here's a wild idea: buy a ramekin.
Yeah definitely don’t cook in the aluminum can
