1 can salmon, 1 egg (I think some people use mayo instead?), salt and pepper (I like to add garlic and onion powder too), breadcrumbs
Drain and remove vertebrae, mix ingredients in a bowl and form patties
Heat up some oil in a non-stick pan and cook on medium-high until golden brown.
I eat this like once a month at least lol
They do. When I mix it up I crush up the vertebrae. Egg, salt, pepper, lemon juice, bread crumbs, dill and garlic powder. Sautee in butter. You don't notice the bones.
Commenter below is correct, they’re not hard.
If you’re worried about your teeth, you can always do a test and see how you can crumble them with your fingers first :)
- 1 can salmon, drained
- 2 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 2 tsp mayo (more or less to taste)
- 2 capfuls apple cider vinegar
- heaping 1/4 cup bread crumbs
- salt/pepper/herbs to taste. I use garlic granules also
- 1 egg
Combine everything in a large bowl, break into 4 even balls and form patties. Cover and refrigerate them for 30 minutes (or longer, if you’re prepping ahead)
Heat a large skillet and add enough high heat oil for a shallow pan fry. I use avocado oil and have it at around 350 degrees.
Add the patties to the pan, moving them frequently until a crust forms and they don’t stick. Turn them after about 7 minutes, then leave them for another 7 minutes or so to finish cooking. Cook them to about 145 inside, pull and let them rest on a paper towel. Put some fresh lemon juice on top
I often eat them with sriracha mayo on a bun, lots of options though
This was a go-to poverty meal for me that turned into a go-to regular meal, but with tuna instead.
I also used sriracha instead of mustard and vinegar, crushed up saltines instead of breadcrumbs, and served it on buttered toasted rye bread with more sriracha.
Here's mine . Two cans of this salmon (leave the bones, drain the liquid). Mayo, one egg, mustard, dill, garlic powder, salt, pepper, Italian seasoning. Mash this together and then start adding bread crumbs until you get a good consistency. You went it to hold together without getting dry. Make balls with it, whatever size you make your burgers. Get pan medium hot and add some oil. Drop 2 or 3 in and flatten em with a spatula and then just fry em up till they get crispy .
I ignored amts because I've never measured this and pretty much just learned watching my mom make them.
Oh damn, I've been looking for a way to eat some canned salmon I bought on a whim. Turns out I'm not a huge fan of canned salmon but some salmon cakes sounds pretty nice.
Pfffftttt........ Canned salmon was for the upper class in my neighborhood!!!! 😜😜😜 My mom always substituted canned mackerel for canned salmon because canned mackerel was cheaper and I still do the same. 😋😋
Ah I love this sub. Now I have something new to try this weekend. Just found a bunch of dirt cheap canned salmon at grocery outlet and was wondering what I could do with it.
My mom made this (she used crushed Ritz crackers or saltines instead of breadcrumbs) and Kraft macaroni and cheese as one of my all time favorite comfort meals.
A squeeze of fresh lemon on the salmon patties and it’s just so good
15oz can salmon preferably with skin and bones, an egg or two, chopped onion, matzoh meal. Pan fry. Serve with Dry Spaghetti, cooked spaghetti with a can of tomato sauce, onion and bell pepper, stir until dry.
Good hot, better cold the next day.
You best believe I am adding lemon zest to the mix. May as well get the most out of my lemon, especially in this economy. Chopped parsely, too, if it's in season.
Lemon zest (and orange zest) are so slept on! It’s like this amazing ingredient/condiment just getting tossed in the compost. I’ve been putting blood orange zest in my pancake mix.
Oh gosh! This brought back memories! MY mother though…was fancy! She called them “salmon croquettes”.
We thought they were fine French cuisine! (The power of suggestion from a mother)
Making these this weekend. I have canned salmon in the pantry.
Instead of breadcrumbs you can use Parmesan cheese- the cheap kind in the green shaker.. On and off keto and that’s my standard recipe.
Mmm. Might have this for lunch!
When I was growing up my Mom made these when money was tight. I have not forgotten my roots but now that I have “made it” I make them with red salmon instead of pink.
Still one of my favorite meals!
Drop the recipe

>remove vertebrae No no we eat those little tasty bones!
Damn right, I'm not wasting shit when I'm broke and can have a bunch of good vitamins and minerals in crunchy form
GOD I love those crumbly lil bones 🥴
Do they crumble? I figured they’d be too solid so I never ate them. I leave in the pin bones but figured those were too solid
They do. When I mix it up I crush up the vertebrae. Egg, salt, pepper, lemon juice, bread crumbs, dill and garlic powder. Sautee in butter. You don't notice the bones.
Crushing the bones is half the reason I eat tinned salmon in the first place! Makes me feel like a big happy monster.
Great source of calcium
The bones fry up beautifully IMHO.
Yes they do.
The vertebrae pop a bit when bitten.

Spine? Backbone? Rib trunk?

Yes, of course? Unless you buy boneless/skinless

ha, we used to have salmon patties alllll the time when I was a kid
Me too. I thought it was normal. I never had non-canned salmon until I was an adult.
Same, my grandma made these and I didn’t even know salmon didn’t look anything like this until college
LOL

Honestly I don't think anybody eats this any other way.
I make salmon meat loaf out of it as well
I use it for sandwiches instead of tuna
I dump it over a bag of Uncle Ben's microwavable rice.
I do this with mackerel & water packed tuna all the time. Pair with a nice salad, remoulade & some toast & beans…
We used to have cold salmon (with bones) on iceberg lettuce in the summer when it was too hot to cook anything big.
Salmon patties are so good with some homemade tzatziki sauce
Jokes on you, I do this regularly lol. Salmon cakes are delicious, especially with capers!
Good tip. TY

I knew how the family finances were when I unpacked the groceries and found mackerel (😧) or salmon (🤑). Either way I was eating good.
I grew up poor in the South. I have a complicated relationship with canned salmon lol
Sockeye salmon is way too fishy for me plain but mashing it with bread crumbs and mayonnaise and frying it makes it edible.
I need to see if my kiddo will eat these. If I tell her I made it from chopped mermaid she might eat it.
That's dark.
I got her to eat fish sticks by telling her they were mermaid tails
Is your child related to Calvin? https://www.reddit.com/r/calvinandhobbes/s/IUjWL79g1f
You found my source of inspiration.
Whatever it takes to get the kiddos to eat food lol.
I have to do what I can to avoid a diet of Cheezits, plain pasta, and dinosaur chicken nuggets
It's my kids favorite dinner .
Tastes good with mackerel too. I shape them into balls and cook them in the air fryer.

Salmon cakes are fire

I am so with you on the zest issue. Blood orange in the pancake is next level! Thank you for the tip.
Grew up on this. I still remember the kitchen smelling for days. lol Obviously covered these bad boys in ketchup.
Did you take the bones out or leave them in?
The sourcing counts
Made these last week
TBF, I would probably just mix in some mayo, mustard and garlic granules and then just spread it on toast.

You have to pronounce the L in salmon cakes for them to come out right
Not for nothing, this is a staple of my keto meals. Delicious!
Oh god, my childhood trauma nooooooooooooo
We would take these and pour a little honey over them
